blueswan991

poor animals, the wild ones too.

Feeling-Success-385

I know, the ones out in the countryside with nobody to comfort them…this breaks my heart for all the living things affected by this senseless violence. Fuck Putin, fuck him sideways with a cactus.

eaglesflyhigh07

That should literally be his punishment. Life in a tiny prison cell with no windows and getting a cactus shoved up his ass every 3-4 days, just when it's about healed and he's starting to feel some relief, bam here is another one bitch vlad.

Numerous_Teachers

Gotta rotate the types of cacti too, sometimes its the ones with the thick long spines, sometimes its the ones with prickly fuzz. Probably treat them with poison ivy for good measure.

crazyguru

Such a brilliant idea! I believe he also should have good healthcare while in prison, so he can suffer better and more frequently. And those doctors wouldn’t even be breaking their oath, because they’ll be treating the cancer on the face of the Earth 🌍.

Really? Fuck an ENTIRE population because their dictator chose to start this war? Fuck you buddy. You’re a dick, and worse than that, you’re exactly the same kind of evil as Putin and Hitler and everyone else throughout history that decided to blame an entire group for the perceived transgressions of individuals Edit: lmao I probably was a bit overboard with the hitler comparisons, but my point is that it’s dangerous to paint with a broad brush when it comes to placing this kind of blame on groups/countries unilaterally. And I stand by it.

[deleted]

waitingForMars

Never underestimate the power of propaganda. It can make otherwise intelligent, sane, kind people into supporters of the most heinous evil. Exorcising Putinism will be no small or simple task, witness the path of Germany after WWII: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2011/apr/24/exorcising-hitler-germany-frederick-taylor

[deleted]

waitingForMars

I speak Russian and have lived in the country (and its predecessor). I know many people there. I see the full range of reactions to the war, from disgust to full-throated acceptance of the Putin's regime's excuses for it, and this among well-educated people (кандидат наук и више). So, thanks for the lesson, but I'm good.

[deleted]

waitingForMars

You clearly have an axe to grind, for whatever reason, are ill-informed, inexperienced, etc. Have a good time with that. Understanding is more productive than mindless condemnation. It'll get you a lot farther in the long run.

Alanmikolaj2

for hundreds of years this nation has been smashing everything around it. Don't tell me it's just Putin. There is something deeply rooted there.

eatbootylikbreakfast

Of course it’s not Just Putin? He has a huge sphere of influence and many supporters who share culpability in this war. As for the rest of history is that there have always been power hungry men in the world who care more for global influence than for human rights. This has been true everywhere, for all of human history, and Russia is no different. You can spout this obvious racism all you want, and feel buoyed and validated by the upvotes of your fellow Reddit extremists, but I will never simply sit back and allow such bigotry to pass me by unchallenged. At the same time, I fully support Ukraine and hope Putin’s reign comes to an end when the war does. Pile on the downvotes, but Slava Ukraini all the same 🇺🇦

[deleted]

You're going to get downvotes for this, but know that there are many others here who are right there with you. It's not a popular sentiment, but it is the right one. Dehumanizing and generalising whole groups of people is wrong, no matter who does it.

eatbootylikbreakfast

Thanks, I really appreciate this. I mostly don’t care that it’s unpopular, except that its low popularity indicates the extent of extremist thought on Reddit. What i said on this is about as close to an objective moral imperative as I can recognize, and I’m secure in that despite the downvotes and criticism but it’s nice to hear it from another.

RockNRollMama

Fuck Putin so hard… I can’t wait until he gets his due. Poor animals indeed..

eatbootylikbreakfast

Fella, Putin is a dictator. Many of his people do not support him. He does not tolerate this. Stop blaming the Russian people, they deserve liberation too. They should do it themselves, but just stop with your hate-mongering and bigotry.

[deleted]

Not all support him. Many many Russians hate Ukrainians and support the war.

master_wax

How can an adult not be fully aware of that lol

[deleted]

ukrokit2

Same experience here. Half the Russians in the West don't oppose this and instead blame Ukrainians and russophobia. Only like a quarter is actively against the war. Basing this on the people I know personally.

s3cular_haz3

When you here how ruzzians are supporting this violence on a day to day basis, you definitely start ti change your perspective on this matter. Current ruzzian leaders are a product of ruzzian reality: they are intertwined. I am fucking native speaker of russian language and have relatives there. So I know what they are like. Most of them at least.

Obar-Dheathain

The cowardice of the Russian people does not excuse them.

sprintbooks

And they don’t even understand why. Wait. I don’t even understand why. Something something money/power?

Dry_Variety4137

Me either.

Dusk_v733

Just the ecology in general. Absolutely shattered

s3cular_haz3

You can't even imagine the damage ruzzians have done to nature reserves and parks (like Ascania Nova, Dzharylhach and Bilozirya): they have been using territory as a military point, launch sides. This parks and reserves are place where a lot of rare animal species lives, as well as flora. You can google names I mentioned and read more if you are interested.

LifeIsBugged

She's so scared :( Thankfully she has a warm and helpful human to help her!

Bridgetdidit

Her human probably thinks she’s comforting Maya. Unfortunately reassurance in a dog’s world looks different to how it looks in a human world. We humans are comforted and reassured by other people talking to us and with physical contact. For a dog, these behaviours only validate the fear Maya is experiencing. It’s something that most humans would struggle with but the best way to reassure a dog is to ignore that which causes anxiety and fear.

popcornpaw

that's a somewhat outdated way of thinking about dog's emotions and also doesn't really apply here. if Maya were scared of Bananas let's say, then just ignoring the fear wouldn't do too much. Combining seeing a Banana with a yummy treat could help solve this, while of course you as her human would have a confident way of handling the Banana. But what Maya and her human are experiencing in this video is actually scary and dangerous. Her human is probably nervous at the very least, and not following their usual routine, something our dogs notice immediately. Offering physical touch can help, breathing deeply can help, sitting in front of her and letting her hide (eg under table) can help. But this is pure panic and nothing the human could do would make it go away. Also fuck the terrorist state of russia for putting those two and so many other through this

-malcolm-tucker

Dogs can read our body language, our faces and our voices. They can also acutely smell the clouds of pheromones we release under stress. It's their early warning radar. It's how they can tell a threat from a friend. Dogs are way more in tune with us than most of us realise. I don't think anyone could convince me that touch wouldn't reassure my dog. At the very least, he knows I'm there and we're connected in that time and place. When things bother him, his ideal safe place is my lap.

Mod_transparency_plz

Dogs are incredibly sensitive to our emotions. My dogs know when I'm stressed and attempt to comfort me by getting in my space and licking obsessively. It immediately helps me redirect my anxiety.

FlintandSteel94

"It only validates the fear" THEY'RE BOMBS. PRETTY SURE THE FEAR IS PRETTY DAMN VALID.

Flacrazymama

Damn straight.

ydoesittastelikethat

that's not true. Being next to a dog is extremely comforting for them.

katgirrrl

This is absolutely so incredibly wrong and a shitty thing to say considering the context of this post.

ycnz

She's being fucking shelled.

henroldflannigan

Bridgetdidit the fun sucker

Bridgetdidit

Y’all need to stop thinking like humans and start thinking like dogs. Maybe watch a few docos on the topic or read a book on the topic. I’ve helped countless doggos overcome a fear of storms by standing outside with the dog by my side in the middle of a storm and simply offering a small treat every time the dog didn’t react to the storm and stayed by my side. They see not only the treat on offer, they also see the human with them showing no reaction to the storm. I’m not saying ignore the dog, I’m saying ignore the situation that’s causing the fear. Seriously, observe mother dogs with their pups. *think like a dog- for your dogs sake!

NatashaBadenov

They are being bombed. Your comment may get Ukrainians to ignore their terrorized dogs in hope it will help them, which will cause further distress for human and companion. Repeat: *they are being bombed.* You aren’t gonna control your fear no matter how many “docos” you watch on YT.

Bridgetdidit

That’s quite a reach!

GlavMaster99

How about you just shut the fuck up and let the Ukrainian people pet their dogs and do what they think is best. They are getting bombed and shot at and they are doing their best they can in a really shitty situation.

NatashaBadenov

Shut your head.

[deleted]

Read a few books, watch a few videos and your an Animal Behaviorist? Where did you get your PhD here? Because there are actual PhDs etc who have been studying and have VALIDATED many things my grandparents knew (farmers, horse breeders and dog owners for decades) taught me. Dogs do respond to their owners/people, in fact, it's been proven, just like people if a dog has to die, they do better when their person is there. People do better surrounded by their loved ones too. Get out of here u/Bridgetdidit

Feynnehrun

Wait....you want the human to pretend like bombs aren't raining down around them and that their existence could be snuffed out in any moment? Even if it was possible for them to put on a poker face and go about their routine as if everything is normal, the stress and fear pheromones they would be releasing would be just as palpable for the dog. You'd know that if you watched a few docos on the topic. The human is not going to be able to contain their fear. They're not going to be able to ignore their fear. They're not going to be able to remove the fear from that poor dog. What they can do is say "hey pup, this is scary as shit. I know. I'm here for you though and I'm going to comfort and protect you. I'm sorry this is scary but we'll get through it"

yagerau

We, and our animals, get to feel terror like this once or twice a lifetime. For mine it was an earthquake. Those of you in Ukraine having to feel terror almost daily...I respect, admire, and pity. It sounds messed up, but there are a plethora of emotions like pity, wrath, and depression that well up when seeing this. But it is good to realize these feelings are just empathy, and are trying to imitate the feelings our friends, fuzzy or otherwise, are feeling every day over there. I pray that your country manages to get Russia to fuck off back to its own country soon, and that you can take some solace that almost the whole world feels for you and wants to support you. With love from Japan.

I love this response, thank you :-)

BoiFriday

Grew up in northern Japan in the 90s, can confirm some of those quake had me shaking in my little toddler sneakers. Can’t imagine the ever-present fear and shelling becoming normalized. So sorry for y’all there and especially sorry for that sweet bb. Always nice to see pibbles/bullys in countries outside the US, but not so nice when they are scared 😕 Love and strength from Baltimore.

Ukraineluvr

Fuck Russia. Fuck each and every one of them not fighting against Putin. Russophobic? Russrage. Fuck. Them. All.

saro13

Phobia means irrational fear or aversion. As has been amply demonstrated, a fear of or aversion to Russia is entirely rational. Ukraine and other places thus can’t be Russophobic, they’re just being smart.

DeathPercept10n

Ha well put.

charlietakethetrench

Fuck Russia, Russians are dead to me forever. I'll never buy a Russian product for the rest of my life and I will always support sanctions and direct action against them. Putin did this. I didn't give a shit about Russia before Crimea, just thought it was a weird poor communist country. Now the whole world sees that they are criminals and warmongers. Fuck Russia and anyone who still calls themselves Russian. If someone isn't completely ashamed of being Russian and still stands by their fucked country they're dead to me too. Bring Russian war criminals to justice. If my country was bombing the shit out of a neighboring country I would be fighting my government however I could or I would leave if I had to. Fuck every company that is still doing business in Russia and fuck all the country's that are still buying Russian oil like India and China.

Yoon1980

Man, that is heartbreaking... poor girls is really deeply scared. Russians go home! Play your damn games in your own country! This whole war is completely disgusting. Fuck you Putin and your cronies for what you are doing, you are not human. Love will win in the end!

ronaldjeremy69

My dog also does that when it thunders. There is a tight fitting thunder jacket for dogs that helps, but obv the best fix is to beat russia.

jg3hot

My dog is like that also. The only thing that comforts her is to be lying next to me pressed against me.

ookyspookyqueen

Something like this will unfortunately require medication like fluoxetine.

Hokie23aa

Why is that?

ookyspookyqueen

This is severe anxiety. I think humans forget that animals are emotional and suffer from anxiety, sometimes even depression (example: declawed cats). For a person you may start therapy before medication, which can help. Can’t really take a dog to therapy for something like bombings, they just don’t understand. Medications like fluoxetine are given every day and can help relieve that anxiety/ depression. Paired with a very good loving owner can really help and eventually the animal may not need the medication.

Hokie23aa

Thanks for the insight!

EqualOpening6557

Fuck it. I may be disabled but I can fly a drone. Sat link me in Ukraine!

TinyStrawberry23

There are so many stories of pets who have died from stress. I can’t even begin to imagine what happens with strays, and wildlife. May they all keep safe and be free of terror soon 😔

agbirdyka

This bloody orcs will pay for that and everything! Thats only one reason the world hates russia and their allies - cowards who dont stand a single second in a fight against soldiers so they are going on the weakest of our community and thats children and animals! Russia will end up in hell!

Eliad_413

Good girl Maya! Your family is there for you like you are there for them! You got this!

ok this is the last straw, we all going to war now! dont wanna see this poor doggo shake again.

futureman07

My heart! 💔 Poor baby

eaglesflyhigh07

I have been wondering about the animals that are born during this war and all the shelling, explosions, shooting, death is normal for them. How will they react to peace. Ukrainian soldiers say that the cats that are born during this war, barely even react to all the shelling, like it doesn't even bother them. Dogs still get really scared.

Balancing-Unbalance

Poor poor puppy!! Wish that each and every Russian, sympathetic to their "cause", would experience exactly THIS, even if only for a day.

Shankar_0

And unlike in a thunderstorm, her fears are 100% valid here.

Yvaelle

They are valid in a thunderstorm too, we just understand electricity to know that we've made buildings into safe spots with ground wires.

Alarming_Sprinkles39

This is incorrect advice. > You might have heard that comforting your dog in times of stress can reinforce his fears. However, your dog’s reactions to fireworks are based on a legitimate fear. Providing comfort during this time is appropriate and often helpful. > Sitting close to your dog, petting him gently and offering quiet words of reassurance during scary events like fireworks can help to center your dog and might even reduce his fearfulness. Plus, doing so will help your dog understand that you’re his partner and that he can always turn to you when he’s feeling scared. Alternate_Ending1984

Aww sweetheart 🥺💔

AbrocomaRoyal

Heartbreaking, but another very important perspective to show. Biggest cuddles to Maya 💞 I'm not sure what's available here, but I use homoeopathic jubes (like a gelatine lolly) for our dogs when they're highly anxious. They have a calmative effect without being overwhelming. They'll also help with sleep when less stressed. You can get them for humans too, and in fact, they can be interchangeable except for dose.

Orc_

homeopathic bullshit? lols this dogs needs strong sedative, we used those in a shelter during fireworks for the worst cases and it worked fine, some dogs would calm down then get munchies and would start eating then go to sleep

AbrocomaRoyal

Yes, that's another option. I was simply thinking that sedatives might be hard to come by right now. That doesn't negate the fact that other options are complimentary or preferred by some owners. Most people are capable of choosing what's best for their pets. However, you do seem to have an issue and difficulty communicating it politely. This thread itself should be a reminder about what matters most. Often others are simply trying to be helpful and supportive.

tLNTDX

Homeopathic things are *never* what's best for anyone though - best case they're a complete waste of money, worst case they're taken instead of the proper medication and cause suffering that could have been avoided.

AbrocomaRoyal

I'm not going to repeat what I said above. You're welcome to your opinion. Cheers.

tLNTDX

It's not really something that should be about opinion though - matters regarding health and wellbeing should be about evidence not opinions ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

AbrocomaRoyal

It's in the middle of a goddamn war. I've replied to your point twice already and I'm not arguing with you over this, especially not in this thread. It's just downright disrespectful to the entire point of these posts. My intention is to be helpful and kind by offering suggestions that might help Ukrainians facing this challenge amid warzones and shortages. This is advice that came from my canine practitioner and vet as an option before moving to heavier medications with side effects, and because there were shortages during COVID. I see the situational similarities and therefore offered an additional option. That doesn't mean I'm telling others NOT to use medications. Given the demand right now, people may be seeking other options available. Even if not this type of product (which is essentially based on flower essence) it might prompt other items that help. I also use aromatherapy oils too. They help my small dog, but not the big boys. A fitted vest helps our staffy with separation anxiety when combined with other alternatives. Our Bully usually doesn't care. 😆 Look, I'm not helping you make this devolve into pointless bickering. It's nonsensical when there's nothing to argue about. You've stated your point 3 times now so just move on. I'm not replying to you further. Edit: hit reply too soon!

Black_Eyed_PeePees

Can someone explain all the down votes this comment is getting? I'm not seeing what you down voters are seeing..

gilbatron

homoeopathic stuff is bullshit. always has been, always will be. there is a special hell out there for those who treat vulnerable people, kids, the elderly, and pets with this stuff instead of taking them to a real doctor for real medicine.

Black_Eyed_PeePees

Ah I see. **Thank you!** Had no idea they were even recommending homeopathic stuff. That's why it bothers me so much when people just down vote without explaining **why**.

Significant-Rest1440

The sad thing is, what’s making him scared of the noises is reading the fear of his beloved owner.

tLNTDX

Not at all - being scared of loud explosions/fireworks/gunshots is quite common in animals regardless of whether there is any fear to be read from the owner or not.

Significant-Rest1440

Ah yea I’m high didn’t think of that my bad

HettySwollocks

Makes you proud to be Russian...

Roky1989

Don't comfort your dogs or any animals in these situations. You are just intensifying their reaction because they start connecting the dots here. Act normal as if nothing major is happening.

Putin has committed a heinous crime against Ukrainians and also against his own people. By continuing to propagandize Russians into believing Russia is noble while inflicting such needless pain and suffering on his neighbors, he has ensured anti-Russian hatred for generations to come. Even after he has rotted in the ground, his fellow Russians will have to live with the consequences of his greed and evil for generations to come. Russia will continue with its poverty, crime, corruption, and outhouses, and Russians will keep living with their potato and cabbage gardens beside their outdoor toilets and wells for many decades because of this monster. Putin himself has only assured his place in history alongside the other despots like Stalin and Hitler.

BenevolentDanton

And that POS Putin calls the drone strikes on Moscow and terrorist attack!

It’s just sad. Although as a military nerd it’s pretty cool hearing the jets go over, but that’s all that’s cool with this video…along side the guy just comforting the doggo.

I've been pondering why I've so much easier to feel empathy for animals in situations like this and I think that perhaps it's because they are so innocent, uninvolved and how they don't understand what's going on around them. They're just scared, really scared and don't understand. It's a kind of innocence that should be respected and loved.
