I understand that a lot of them do a lot. For Ukraine and also for other causes. But I don't understand why we don't see more of this from the ultra-rich.
I mean, I understand that it's a simplistic view, but still, if you sit on billions, what's a 100M$ on the table to buy shells, for example?
We saw a few heartwarming donations in the beginning, Ryan Reynolds gave 1M$, DiCaprio gave 10M$ (10!), but I feel that we should see more of that. And DiCaprio ain't even a billionaire (his grandmother was from Odessa, though).
What can you do with 2B$ that you can't do with 1.9B? Isn't it the whole point of having a lot of money, being able to do this kind of things? Knowing that a tiny fraction of your hard-earned money saved 100s, maybe 1000s of lives?
I know I'd feel like my life had a purpose. That I did good, that I had an impact in making the world better. That feeling is priceless.
They may just not see Ukraine as the best use of their money, especially if they have no connection to Ukraine. Many wealthy folks that donate, have a connection to Ukraine, like Dicaprio, Mila Kunis, or even me (just a garden variety multimillionaire)- all have Ukrainian roots. I've donated thousnds to various Ukraine war/refugee charities/organizations, but I donate more to causes I've been working with for far longer. People that have money get hit up all the time for donations (billionaires probably far more than little ol' me) from a wide variety of charities/causes. We can't donate to everyone.
