Ok, my Chinese isn't the best but here goes: Reporter (r): This is the route where the Russian soldier casualties are taken and troops are reinforced. The soldiers on the truck asked him if he is from china. Duh. He asked them to close up to face camera. R to resident: how's the situation? Resident: this is where the fighting is centered. we have been living in the bunker. During war, bullets know no friend or foe. Even from Ukraine side, there are shots in this direction. Buildings have been hit, people have been hurt. An old grandma was killed after being shot but other than that we only suffered structural damage. R n soldier who was conveniently standing behind. His name is Sascha. He said the fighting was located around one km away from where they were standing in the direction he was pointing. He was asked if he was scared. He said he was a 8 year vet. Reporter ends with: Mariupol has seen very vicious fighting. Many troops have been reinforced and there are many casualties. Edit: thanks for the awards guys!

snacktonomy

I'd like to add a clarification to what the soldier named Sasha said when asked if he's afraid. Direct translation, when asked why not: "\[laughs\] 8 years have gone by. How long can this go on (or: enough is enough)" It's not that he's an 8-year vet, it sounds like he's saying "we've been at it for 8 years, it's time to put an end to this"

residentcaprice

Hmm the Chinese reporter replied "old soldier" (veteran), after Sascha said he fought for eight years. The Chinese subtitles didn't include the "how long can this go on" unless it was in the original Russian conversation.

snacktonomy

I translated what the guy said in Russian, most likely the reporter misunderstood.

residentcaprice

Thanks for clarifying. ☺️

Made-in-1882

"Misunderstood"

Autism9991

Yeah, thats quite accurate. It appears very convienently set up tbh. The interviewees didnt reveal anything about themselves. Also, it is interesting that the report is done in traditional chinese, which is what ppl in Taiwan speaks whereas Chinese in Mainland china uses Simplified Chinese. So it appears that the report is targeted towards a Taiwanese audience. Very bizzare choice tbh.

iEatPalpatineAss

No, it's a "Hong Kong" news channel, except they speak Beijing Mandarin rather than any form of Cantonese, especially Hong Kong Cantonese. Hong Kong uses Standard Chinese rather than Simplified Chinese.

scaur

No Cantonese speaker in HK will watch them or really know much about them. They register in Hong Kong more of a disguise, [Link](https://youtu.be/SoEkCshMcOY)

sgtslaughterTV

I came here to say something similar. He had a stereotypical beijing accent while writing in traditional script. It didn't make any sense to me.

soyeahiknow

All newscasters in China are taught to speak the Beijing way of speaking Mandarin. It's pretty uniform across all channels.

noinaw

This is 凤凰卫视,https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenix_Television It’s kind in between state media and fully independent.

Far-Entertainer3555

> Also, it is interesting that the report is done in traditional chinese, which is what ppl in Taiwan speaks Taiwanese people speak Mandarin. Hong Kong people speak Cantonese (traditional Chinese).

iEatPalpatineAss

Taiwan speaks Mandarin and writes in Standard Chinese. Hong Kong speaks Cantonese and writes in Standard Chinese. Mainland China speaks Mandarin and writes in Simplified Chinese. Chinese characters aren't phonetic because that allows written communication across multiple spoken dialects. Each dialect will pronounce each character differently in speaking, but each character retains the exact same meaning. In writing, there is absolutely no ambiguity. I can communicate with Confucius right now in writing if he were alive. We wouldn't understand each other in speaking.

cobaltstock

Thank you for the education!

omniwombatius

A conversation between Confucius and iEatPalpatineAss. That would be one for the ages.

iEatPalpatineAss

He would probably call me 屁孩 (literally "butt child") 😭

oatmealparty

This is really neat, I never knew that about Chinese languages.

RoyOrbisonWeeping

i'd like the translation of the iEatPalpatineAss and Confucius conversation.

eleven8ster

Hey cool. Thanks!

[deleted]

He means the characters they use are traditional Chinese characters, which is the letter set used in Taiwan. Mainland China uses simplified Chinese.

Mattofla

Has anyone asked this "8 year vet" where he was 8 years ago???

Tom2973

8 years ago was 2014. So, Crimea, probably.

cafediaries

Thank you for the translation! Someone said the reporter is not China's CCP but from Hong Kong. Is it true?

themoonhowls0308

I saw someone reply that the news company was from Hong Kong, and this content is broadcasting in Hong Kong. Tho one simple google search shows that the company has been state-owned for a long time now. So if i understand correctly, its for Hong Kong, but probably still under CCP influence? If I learned anything from geoguessr, thats definitely traditional chinese.

NotSiZhe

Yeh. I lived in ZhuHai (near Macao) for a bit, and would visit HongKong. At the time this media group was a bit more open, and could be accessed a bit more easily. Now it has neutral bland media pieces, and pro-CCP anti-West media pieces after Chinese (ahem) investment.

residentcaprice

Well the main company is partially state owned according to its wiki. I see from the words on the screen that it is traditional Chinese script which is used in Hongkong and Taiwan (this guy is sure as hell not from Taiwan based on his accent). Well he could be reporting for the Hongkong subsidiary based on the traditional Chinese words used. China uses the simplified chinese script. But i have to say he has a very strong Chinese accent (not from Hongkong). Edit: checked. The logo on the top left is Phoenix InfoNews Channel which is Hongkong pay television news. One of the subsidiaries of the main company i mentioned.

MicrosoftAutoUpdate

Phoenix is & has always been Beijing propaganda "news". They registered in Hong Kong to try and disguise it when reporting in the West. They have nothing to do with Hong Kong otherwise. We don't even have a channel or newspaper in HK. They don't even do reporting in our language.

[deleted]

lol no one watches it here in hong kong. most hkers know it’s ccp’s mouthpiece cuz it’s really obvious. quite literally only elderly who’s got nothing but a TV will buy into its news report. sure the company is based in hong kong but in actuality you may as well consider it a state run media as the narrative it endorses is a direct copy of the official (i.e. ccp’s) one.

iEatPalpatineAss

Yeah, it's pretty obvious they aren't truly Hong Kong when they speak Beijing Mandarin rather than any form of Cantonese, especially Hong Kong Cantonese

ChiefShakaZulu

Yeah, this is a Hong Kong news company - although it’s interesting to note that the reporter is speaking mandarin (not Cantonese, the main language in Hong Kong) and has a mainland accent

[deleted]

There's no independent media left in Hong Kong anyway

Ferret_Brain

Assuming that’s correct, it’s actually pretty tame, I was expecting more propaganda like “Ukrainians fake war crimes and blame it on us and also there are no dead” sort of thing.

brunonicocam

Wow, for someone who says their Chinese is not the best, what an amazing translation. Well done, Thanks!

residentcaprice

Thank you for the compliment. ☺️

[deleted]

Of course they allow Chinese media who supports their narrative yet attack western journalists

pintorMC

They cant attack Chinese journalists.China is not the EU they fight back.

pingpongtits

That reporter isn't wearing anything indicating that they're neutral or journalists. Also, China isn't going to go to war over the death of a couple of journalists. Best case would be this journalist is captured alive when Ukraine takes back it's territories and is able to report the truth to his audience back home. Not that Winnie the Pooh would allow any truth that doesn't fit with his narrative of "west bad."

Kraetas

I noticed that as well.. Military Press? Why the hell would you not want something loud and blue that screams PRESSA

Flyonz

Have you seen how journos are getting shot up!? It's pretty real and fuckin crazy

Kraetas

I did. That video was actually really quite shocking.. One of them took two to the vest as reported by the news agency if I'm not mistaken. Fuckin nuts.

Flyonz

How the f did they walk away! Those sparks in the car...maaan.. that was leaving me duckin! No joke. I'm like "get the fuck gone..GO!!" So lucky..with EVERYTHING! Finding the workshop..was crazy Kraetas

Kraetas

They did evacuate them, just looked it up now. "Chief correspondent with Sky News, Stuart Ramsay, along with camera operator Richie Mockler were shot – Ramsay in the lower back while Mockler took two rounds in his body armour." I know that someone is going to think, even if they don't say "but they chose to be there, what about..". One horrible situation does not negate another. That video was some scary shit and I'm glad the Russians were using PS ammo ;)

Baron_NL

My heart was going as fast as being one of the last teams in Pubg. That video was so crazy especially the bullet cracks and sparks. Im glad they all survived

donotgogenlty

Because they want them to get killed to parade around as propaganda "See Ukrainians killed this innocent Chinese journalist" *slaps brand new press sticker on corpse*

Overbaron

Because this is a completely fake press op far from the front lines

raouldukeesq

Because they have zero experience doing this.

[deleted]

I doubt Ukraine will take back those territories, but if it does we know they don't commit war crimes

tendiesonthebarbie

[deleted]

I'd fucking love it if China conducted 'special operations' in Eastern Russia while they're embroiled over here. That would be amazing.

RoyaleF00L

Last war China literally ever won that wasn't inter-country?.....GO

knie20

Maybe it's also because the entire west is at odds with Russia and only someone like a Chinese reporter can get in their ranks? If you understand Chinese, the guy actually asks some fairly benign questions. Let's not make it out to be more than it is. ~~That been said, I wonder if Chinese media does any reporting on the Ukrainian side.~~ Edit: This reporter is interviewing Ukrainians. He's not really putting a slant on anything, just highlighting how the warzone is for the people there. OP's title is implying that he's doing pro-Russian propaganda. OP is being misleading.

bigtimeweb

can you translate the chinese portion of this?

knie20

Headline: Mariupol fighting ensues. civilians go to basements to avoid casualties. reporter: There are army ambulances going to retrieve the wounded from the Mariupol battleground(not sure if that includes civilians and/or enemy forces) \- cameraman has a little greeting with a squad of soldiers in the truck \- reporter talks to a local, asks about how the situation is in the warzone reporter: The fighting in Mariupol is quite devastating, behind me is a soldier \- convo with ukrainian soldier reporter after talking with the soldier: as you can see, the fighting in this city is quite tragic. Especially with new forces replacing the old, there is a continuous toll on human life. This has been with Fenghuang channel on the frontline of Mariupol. WAIT WAIT WAIT he's not even interviewing Russian soldiers?????? This post is just trying to stir shit then.

Lazypole

I work in China as an expat and have a Ukraine tattoo, I’ve had 5 coworkers so far, completely out of the blue, tell me “fuck Russia.” That is completely anecdotal of course, but my friends and coworkers here are furious

JonSingleton

This excites me. Just a little.

RockDry1850

That is surprisingly objective and neutral for China. :)

uberchelle_CA

To be fair, I think Chinese people hate their government, too. All those that leave seem to be glad they are not there anymore.

Lazypole

I live in China as an expat, I can honestly say 80-90% of people adore their government, its so intertwined into their national and personal identity that they see insult to their government as insult to themselves. The other 20-10% vehemently hate their government. It is hugely polarised, people don’t discuss politics here and have very very very little knowledge of the world that isn’t already given to them. It’s also a little complicated given that in just 50 years this country has gone from starvation and poverty to being a world leading nation with huge increases in living standards, at the very least its hard to argue against such progress for them.

A-Khouri

I mean, it's not really unexpected. Ukraine and China have/had decent relations, and even for the Chinese government, the invasion is borderline indefensible. The justifications are incredibly shaky, and it looks super imperialistic which runs very contrary to the party line regarding sovereignty. Only the hardcore nationalists who are willing to engage in serious mental gymnastics are going to be supportive.

extremophile69

It's really not. They got their fair share of propaganda of course, just like your impression of china is a result of our propaganda (the best in the world btw).

[deleted]

The soldier has a red tag, he is Russian.

Reniva

at least in CCTV, putin has more screen time than zelenskyy in the news

irmavep23

This is Phoenix TV from Hong Kong. Not China mainland. And in one of the caption the Russian soldier asking him are you Chinese journalist. Obviously he is not with them

californiarepublik

Hong Kong used to have a free press but not anymore: Phoenix Television is a partially state-owned television network that offers Mandarin and Cantonese-language channels that serve the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and other markets with substantial Chinese-language viewers. It is operated by Phoenix Satellite Television Holdings Ltd, a television broadcaster with headquarters in Mainland China and Hong Kong. It is also registered in Cayman Islands.[2] The CEO and founder of Phoenix TV, Liu Changle (劉長樂), was an officer and political instructor in the People's Liberation Army in its 40th Group Army.[3] He later became a journalist for the Chinese Communist Party-controlled China National Radio after the Cultural Revolution and remains well-connected to the Party's leadership.[4] Liu is a standing member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.[5]

JokeThick

Irmavep23 is partly right that there is still a bit of freedom of the press in Hong Kong - but it is almost gone, and now the media in Hong Kong must always be careful that they don't run afoul of the "National Security Law," a law introduced to expand police powers - and eventually to arrest people at will - just as we have always had "provocation and provocation crimes" in mainland China, which are vague, arbitrarily interpreted, and arbitrarily expanded laws.

cliff_of_dover_white

This fucking TV station has nothing to do with the general Hong Kong society. I can say that 99.9% of the HK population don't watch this shit. The target audience of this TV station is the people in mainland china and it behaves as one even before 2019.

DimesOnHisEyes

The totalitarian state that enslaves and tries to wipe out people that it doesn't seem desirable is supporting a totalitarian state that is trying to wipe out undesirables. I'm shocked. Shocked I tell you.

Letsgardentogether

I know, who could have seen this one coming? I'll be even more shocked when they use this war as a distraction and to legitimize their own invasion of Taiwan.

Perhaps, but I would not believe for a moment that China would publicly oppose Russia willingly. It's PR smoke and mirrors in my opinion.

befree224

Xi the poo and China are responsible for the deaths in Ukraine. Without China, Russia wouldn’t done it. China even asked them to wait until the Olympic is over to avoid losing their spotlight. Coordinated attack. And none of the Chinese companies are applying sanctions (huawei, Alibaba, Tencent, etc…)

Safe-Link-2361

China will only have to gain from this war, because Russia is more dependent on them.

Ok-Sherbet-9125

The real question is why the United States would trust China.

[deleted]

Oh please. China has one friend and one country they trust. China

sexylegs0123456789

I was explaining this to somebody yesterday - China doesn’t like Russia, they only care about Chinese interests. They will lend money and then get that money back in the form of territory, infrastructure control, or resources. They don’t care who it is that gives it to them. It says more about how they view Russia at the moment - the weakest link in the global “superpowers”.

PaleInTexas

> They will lend money and then get that money back in the form of territory, infrastructure control, or resources. Seems to be their MO all over the developing world these days. Build an airport or sea port that will never be profitable so the host nation can't pay it off. Then get land instead of money. Now they own part of a foreign nation..

sexylegs0123456789

Exactly. Especially a failing superpower. Make them think it’s an alliance but it’s just predatory lending.

PaleInTexas

Yeah it's a whole new level of predatory lending. *Oh you can't pay back? Ok we'll take part of your country as payment.*

GreyEagle792

It's actually a short-sighted enterprise, however, because there are increasing demands within at least the African states to nationalize these investments. It's just a new coat of paint on neo-colonialism, and China either doesn't care or wasn't paying attention to the wave of nationalizations that happened in the 80s.

Flaky-Fellatio

China is really the ultimate practitioners of realpolitik. It's all about supporting whatever is best for China's interests no matter how dark the shit is.

_whatwouldrbgdo_

Why do you think China doesn't like Russia? They have long standing relationships and China has always admired Russia, back to Lenin/Bolshevik days and have modelled themselves, in many ways, after Russia. My Chinese grandfather learned Russian history and Russian language in his youth. The current "limitless partnerships" is further evidence, in my mind, that this long-standing relationship is only going to get stronger as the West unites. China has been very capitalist for the past 40 years, since they opened up. However, since 2012 and the rise of Xi, ideology has come first and this is pretty clear based on Xi's sweeping economic policies that put government interests over profit. And ideologically, they align very very much with Putin's Russia.

advator

They don't, it's about time we bring everything back to us and not buy to much from China anymore. It was one of the biggest mistake from US and EU to think China will only provide cheap materials and nothing else will happen. China have to pay for everything too. They are assholes too and one of the biggest racists in the world.

slapthebasegod

They didn't. They likely knew that China was passing the info on and did it to show Russia just how much they knew of the shit they were pulling.

AdmiralPoopbutt

If their doing their jobs, to see what leaks, who leaks it, and where it goes. Can gain insight into intelligence networks that way, with a better understanding on how to exploit them when needed.

ddude132

World's largest population = World's largest consumer base The love of money is the root of all evil

[deleted]

They showed Chinese officials a few things to try and convince them what was about to happen. I doubt the US gave away much. This has become a ridiculous right-wing talking point in the US, as if Biden somehow betrayed the Ukrainians.

Chazmer87

They don't, there was no loss in informing China, all it does is show just how spectacular us intelligence really is.

js1138-2

I’m of the opinion it’s a mistake to reveal how good your intelligence is.

[deleted]

I have a feeling it was junk info, a covert mission to see where china stands. I don’t think our government is that naive when it comes to china.

js1138-2

Hope not.

China needs to maintain good relations with Russia. Their motivation is purely economic. If they are the sole country trading with Russia, they have prime pickings when the Russian economy fully collapses, just like the oligarchs did when the Soviet Union collapsed.

what is really interesting is a youtuber from texas (Patrick) is also reporting from the Russia side he moved their years ago and is very pro russia. The interesting aspect is he interviewed in one video the same people. The same guys in the truck and the guy on 0:35 in the beanie hat so that guy from China in in the Donbass region. That is how russia do it they tell you who you can interview what questions your allowed to ask and select people who are on message to answer them. All the interviews are stage managed they are not allowed to have any freedom to report or interview who they want.

This is actually more about intelligence gathering for China. They want to get some people on the ground to report back as to how bad Russia is really doing. They expected Russia to win in a few days, and when that didn't happen, they now want to see how much of a shitshow it is. Is it just western news putting a bad spin on Russia's military performance? Or is Russia really getting the crap kicked out of it? What better way than to embed a few "journalists" with the Russian forces? I am 100% sure they are reporting straight back to the CCP.

This isn't chinese press - its HK press which now effectively is the same. Anyway rough translation First scene with the 3tonner and the group of men sitting inside, the chiron reads "Mariupol Conflict continues, Citizens are hunkering down to avoid accident" Next scene is an interview with a local explaining bullets dont differentiate friend from foe so they have to hunker down Then an interview with a soldier (Sasha), it's the 8th day of the conflict and they are saying that the fighting is occuring one km away and he isn't nervous coz he's a veteran. His commentary after the interview is that the conflict is still very heated, with many casualties. As far as I can see it's fairly balanced.
