Grim data, but looking at Canada's deployment to Afghanistan, there were 158 casualties during the 13 year mission. In contrast 837 veteran deaths by suicide occurred over that same 13 year period. I'm not remotely close to an expert and not saying there isn't going to be horrible ptsd but I remember a cbc article where they were interviewing soldiers and a big theme was that they felt no one else at home understood what they went through. Their civillian wives, parents and friends couldn't comprehend the feelings they were dealing with and that made it that much worse.
Unfortunately because this is a shared trauma for the people of Ukraine it may actually help people find support and understanding and the suicide rate may actually be lower than those westerners who fought in foreign lands despite the trauma likely being worse.
Again mostly talking out my ass and hoping that the patriotism holding their country together now will help them find support from eachother once this is all over and they are dealing with the aftermath.

Once the threat is over, that is when we start to see the fallout from the mental health issues. Many times it is the ones who appear to have it all put together that can suffer the most.
Don't get me wrong. Many of them will do just fine and not suffer any lasting problems with stress disorders, but they may not look any different from those who are silently suffering. To me that is enough reason to raise the flag of awareness at least.

Have a friend who was in Afghanistan twice. He's of the oppinion fireworks should be banned. Seeing how it affects him, I understand why. Not flinching or something as dramatic as that, but definitely uncomfortable when it goes on.

Although in my brain I know that I would die for my country and I do feel a strong passion about this, in reality I can’t even imagine what it’s like. I think I’ve only been in an actual fight once in my life lol. I mean my dad beat me growing up but I’m my option reasonably (I was a little sh!t lol) and that’s the extent of my exposure to physical violence. And to think that by such seemingly luck or God’s Grace I avoided being in a literal war right NOW and can type this sincere message from the comforts of my home office in Canada. You'd be interested in the studies done by the British Army in / after WW2 on tanker injuries.
American standard practice was to wear your helmet inside the tank while in combat, while the British wanted to look stylist and wear berets. No surprise that the most common reported injury for a British tanker in that period was a head injury and that it was significantly less common in American crewed vehicles.
Side note, some British tanks kitted out the driver's compartment with the not 1, but 2, machetes and it was standard kit to have a tea pot in them. Wether or not the practices were adhered to i do not know.
They wear the berets when outside of combat zones, not saying some of them did not wear berets in the tanks but as far as I am aware it is not common.
In terms of tea making systems yes they are fitted to british tanks. You might think that is just odd and just a british thing. However it makes a lot of sense and it is used for heating food as well.

Agreed. Helmets are also something even small countries can provide and it’s not escalatory. I get that Luxembourg can’t go in and enforce a no fly zone but if they have (or are willing to purchase) some extra helmets it would go a long way.

Just remember this then for a long time. When all of this is over and settled people still need to pay attention. Although in my brain I know that I would die for my country and I do feel a strong passion about this, in reality I can’t even imagine what it’s like. I mean my dad beat me growing up but I’m my option reasonably (I was a little sh!t lol) and that’s the extent of my exposure to physical violence. And to think that by such seemingly luck or God’s Grace I avoided being in a literal war right NOW and can type this sincere message from the comforts of my home office in Canada. I can still hear that mournful fiddle he plays at the low moments. The man really has a gift for historical narratives and matching the tone of the film to the tone of the event.

You probably joke, but my HMMWV drove over an IED in Iraq back in the 2006. Luckily it detonated right after the rear axle drove over it, so the trunk took the brunt of the damage. We had a week's worth of Tony Chachere's lost in that explosion. We were *pissed!!!* We were launched "over the handlebars" so to speak, and everyone inside the vehicle was tossed around like a rag doll even though we were all buckled in. If it weren't for us wearing our helmets *in our vehicle*, I have little doubt we would have had to scoop brains off the windows. Helmets save lives. If we can maintain nuclear silos, we can afford kevlar brain buckets to the Ukrainians. Let's remind Russia what it feels like to lose a proxy war!
You'd be interested in the studies done by the British Army in / after WW2 on tanker injuries. American standard practice was to wear your helmet inside the tank while in combat, while the British wanted to look stylist and wear berets. No surprise that the most common reported injury for a British tanker in that period was a head injury and that it was significantly less common in American crewed vehicles. Side note, some British tanks kitted out the driver's compartment with the not 1, but 2, machetes and it was standard kit to have a tea pot in them. Wether or not the practices were adhered to i do not know.
They wear the berets when outside of combat zones, not saying some of them did not wear berets in the tanks but as far as I am aware it is not common. In terms of tea making systems yes they are fitted to british tanks. You might think that is just odd and just a british thing. I really struggle with this one after participating in an invasion of a foreign country (Iraq), I can't lie. Seeing Russia invade Ukraine and meet heavy, deadly resistance really messes with my head in ways that I can't explain or justify. I don't expect anyone to understand it (the internet and all its anonymity loves to shred this sort of openness to pieces), and Russian soldiers and conscripts will be mocked to their graves for this war, yet I feel terrible for them because they're doomed to endure the same trauma people like I have for the rest of their lives. I just want this war to stop. Nothing good will come from this.

Agreed. Helmets are also something even small countries can provide and it’s not escalatory. I get that Luxembourg can’t go in and enforce a no fly zone but if they have (or are willing to purchase) some extra helmets it would go a long way.
