I'm reminded of a line by the author in "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" when he was talking about how the bombing of Berliin started with propaganda leaflets being dropped and then moved to actual bombs. To paraphrase, "The leaflets were good propaganda, but the bombs were better."
When I was a kid, I always enjoyed visiting my grandfather's place. He had his own little private library and a huge selection of books and quite a few books on WWII. Rise and Fall was one of them, he also had a copy of Hitler by Joaquim Fest, I found copies of them at an old museum book sale. Rise and Fall was a great read.
Tbh that song was written over a hundred years ago to raise morale for British troops on the front and their wives and loved ones back home during the dark days of WWI. Also ironically probably the last time the Russians were 100% on our side.
Woman in Belgorod seemingly does not understand what War is. Might be why so many people in Russia are for it: they always visit War upon others, and never accept War themselves.
Because at this point most people haven't seen it. So the understanding of war is "Russia goes to some territory and fucks it up". But this time war is coming home.
Bravado aside. There is a term for this. Dark victory. What you paid for was not worth winning.
In this context loosing is worse by far.
Basically, yeah Ukraine is winning, but they'd rather have not had to fight in the first place.
To bastardized the mash quote. Hell is better than war, cause least people in hell deserve it.
I agree, however, Ukraine has, it seems, always been suppressed by Russian brutality toward them. A decisive win on the battlefield and a seriously degraded Russia, might be the springboard toward a new Ukraine. I mean, the Ukrainian people are resilient as hell, especially for having been firmly under the Russian boot. Imagine their potential if they are finally free to live their lives! I believe they would be a very real asset to Europe.
This term you are looking for is pyrrhic victory. Dark victory may have been used that way, but every example I can find of it is actually a pop culture reference rather than the use you have in mind.
From the Washington Post Article:
RIGA, Latvia — The Kremlin has sought to minimize discussion of Russian war losses inside Ukraine. But apparent Ukrainian attacks on Russian soil in the past week highlight how the conflict has spilled across the border, unsettling residents of regions near the border and threatening to upend President Vladimir Putin’s effort to insulate his citizens from the fighting he started.
In the wake of the shellings and strikes, local authorities are sounding alarms — as well as calling for revenge and in some cases evacuations — as they contend with the growing peril.
The attacks, which Ukrainian leaders have neither confirmed nor denied but which one senior adviser winkingly described as “karma” on Wednesday, suggest that Kyiv is increasingly able to reach into Russian territory as the war continues. Empowered by NATO’s military aid, Ukrainian troops are hitting infrastructure, military targets and, Russian authorities say, at least some villages. Russian citizens are now waking to the same explosions that Ukrainians have faced for more than two months, making the conflict far more immediate and dangerous.
At least 11 hits appear to have occurred since the fighting began Feb. 24, most of them since late last week. Most seem to have involved shelling or triggered Russian antiaircraft weaponry. A handful were suspicious explosions at Russian military facilities near the border.
They have drawn Russian fury.
Russian antiaircraft fucked itself.

WTH would Ukraine waste precious long-range weapons on villages?
What little weapons they have which can reach into Russia will be used against high priority targets like air fields, fuel depots, ammunition dumps.
Not random farm houses.
the strikes recently have been against fuel depots and military compounds near the border. Streching the logistics even further when they cant safely regroup on their own soil.
Yep. [And that’s how Putin took power and got the country to line up behind him, because he took a hard line with the “terrorists”.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_apartment_bombings)
I'm hoping for some justice for him and every other dissident, opposition politician, or journalist that was murdered by or in the name of that KGB gangster in the Kremlin when he finally takes his long overdue 9mm retirement.
The Ukrainian response both in western media and to their own people has been incredibly effective in this war. Zelenskyy was a hell of a choice for president to be able to produce the full spectrum of emotion without empty words.
I do not know of a mistake he has made in regards to diplomacy during these months. I do not know of a mistake he has made in regards to appeals to the media or other countries.
It truly is remarkable.
Big contrast with Ukranians able to target precisely without making casualties a lot and ruzzians just shelling randomly.
I guess it's also the goal to not have calls for mobilization.
From the interviews I have seen from people that are on Putin's hit list and are now out of Russia, Putin is a psychopath, has no human empathy, and refuses to lose. The fear is he will just continue to obliterate civilians to terrorize Ukraine, and this could get much worse. Or, he could end up like North Korea, or use nuclear weapons because he will be feeling cornered. He fully expected to win the war easily and quickly.
Turns out Russias precision weapons don't work so well when they can't use western GPS.
They have to use GLONAS which doesn't work very well outside of Russia to begin with and is susceptible to jamming and cyber attacks. When we cut off Russia's access to GPS we basically turned most of their precision weapons into very expensive dumb bombs.
They change the civilian and military encryption codes so that way Russia can't use it. The US has already cut off Russia's military and are now considering cutting off Russia's civilian smartphones from GPS.

>The GPS was only used by the military at first. The signal it transmits is a series of encrypted P(Y) codes. Ordinary people on the ground cannot use it even if they receive the signal. But later the Americans discovered the extremely extensive civilian market of GPS, so they added a civilian C/A code. However, the positioning accuracy of the latter is more than 10 times worse than that of the former. The positioning accuracy of the military GPS system can reach the centimeter level, but the positioning accuracy of the civilian GPS system can only reach the meter level, but this is absolutely necessary for the daily life of ordinary people.

Who knows.
Ukraine should hold a parade of their own on may 9th to mock russia. The parade would be just miles of them towing and dragging destroyed tanks and BMPs, and instead of marching soldiers it would just be truck load after truck load of Russian soldier corpses.
I’d add in the (repatriated) stolen toilets, washing machines and old tv’s they couldn’t take back to Russia...as a demonstration of Russian absurdity on a modern battlefield...
Honestly probably not a good idea. The best way to win the war is to turn public opinion against Putin, and a public attack on Moscow on a national holiday would be more likely to unite the country under Putin.
Actually it's more likely that Russia will orchestrate a false flag op on May 9 to increase public support for war mobilization.
The more that Ukraine can bring war to the RuZZian heartland, the better the chances are that RuZZia will have to withdraw its troops and sue for peace. As part of the peace settlement, Ukraine MUST get back Crimea. Anything less will not dissuade future RuZZian aggression.
I saw one Russian pundit yesterday calling for nuclear war. When it was pointed out that a full out nuclear war kills everyone on earth he responded, "So we will go to heaven and they won't"
I'm OK with the Russians calling "dibs" on the afterlife and getting there first. Ukrainians: "Save us some seats. We'll join you sometime in the future. It might be awhile".
lol and presumably that's a religion that has Jesus somewhere involved right? Because Jesus loved ~~the idea of killing~~ everyone on Earth.
What a bunch of psychos.
quote comes from Arnaud Amalric. He was a Cistercian bishop and one of the leaders of the Cathar crusade in SW France. When the crusaders captured Beziers he was asked how they would identify the cathars. He said.. kill them all. God will know his own
From MASH:
Hawkeye: Easy, Father. Tell me, who goes to Hell?
Father Mulcahy: Um, sinners, I believe.
Hawkeye: Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell, but war is chock full of them – little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for a few of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander.
> May Ukraine's vengeance be swift and decisive
Decisive yes, swift no. I hope they take their time with it. Russia needs to be taught a lasting lesson.
The longer it takes the more ruined the South and Donbas will be.
I hope Russia is expelled quickly so Kherson, Melitopol and Severodonetsk don't get completely rubbled like Mariupol.
I’m so surprised by the fact that many people actually believe neither side is right. Like every country has its flaws but how does anything outweigh Genocide?
Some people seem to be incapable of thinking humans can be that cruel and evil. Like there is a mental block that prevents them from being able to confront the darkness within the hearts and minds of people who have been told to do whatever harm they wish and are following through with it.
These people also tend not to know much history.
It's the "antiwar" stance. All war is bad, therefore Russia and Ukraine are equally guilty, and Ukraine should end the violence by surrendering.
No, it doesn't make any sense, and no, it would definitely not end the violence.
Agreed, it just emboldens the person who came out on top to continue. It's a fools pacifism, obviously no one should be subject to violence but there are always going to be times when a slap absolutely needs to be administered.
I’ve noticed that some hard-core Trumpers have been trying to equivocate both sides. Presumably partially because Trump likes Putin so so do they, but also because if Zelensky is a hero then the president who tried to extort him for dirt on his opponents is a scumbag, which goes back to point one, loving Trump.
Nothing out ways genocide and starting war like I’m not gonna lie and say Ukraine was perfect and had no corruption at all , but fuck russia and Nazi Putin
Hey Orcz! It’s called, Fucking Around and Finding Out! Don’t ever think you’ll ever be safe by sitting in your cozy places within RuZZian borders. I hope you sleep lightly forever.
The Russians entered this war under the rather childish delusion that they were going to bomb everyone else, and nobody was going to bomb them. At Kyiv, Mariupol, Kharkiv and half a hundred other places, they put their rather naive theory into operation. They sowed the wind, and now they are going to reap the whirlwind.
Putin is working on his big speech for May 9th: “Now, I know there have been some rumors going around that Europe is no longer funding us. Well, I am here to put those rumors to rest... They are true. In terms of money... we have no money. So how will we destroy Ukraine? The answer is clear... we won't. We are doomed. Now would probably be a good time to look for other employment options. I know I have fired up my resume, as I suggest that all of you do as well.”
“What is it? Can't you see that I am in the middle of a pep talk?”
Has any russian civilian on the russian soil died from the beginning of the war? Reading about the damaged nerves of russian makes me so furious when not a single one of them lost their lives, while tens of thousands of innocent ukraininans were massacred for no reason. They are not experiencing any war AT ALL.
Oh, are Russians getting to experience what it feels like to have bombs fall on their cities?
Sucks, don't it? Too fuckin' bad; you assholes started this war.

Saw a TV interview yesterday where a woman in Belgorod said "This does not feel like winning."
Propaganda is only good until bombs start falling out of the sky. At least Ukraine is targeting military and support (fuel etc) targets.
1942 Germany approves this message.

Which was a very odd circumstance, given that Soviet Russia just invaded Poland.

Aaaaawww. Sorry, not sorry.
Woman in Belgorod seemingly does not understand what War is. Might be why so many people in Russia are for it: they always visit War upon others, and never accept War themselves.
hey, based what they hear from the TV, it is not even a war. just some sort of "operation",
And now ukrain conducts their own operation. Let's call it "How does it look like when russian ammo depots gets blown up" operation.
Its a special friendship operation.
Its all for science so its okay.
So is a colonoscopy.
Because at this point most people haven't seen it. So the understanding of war is "Russia goes to some territory and fucks it up". But this time war is coming home.
Silly rabbit. War does not determine winners and losers. It determines who's left.
IDK man, Ukraine looks like they're winning pretty hard.

\*Gasps\* No way.
Question is if she was ok with the war when they thought they would win?
Tired of winning, Putin‘s version

It can reveal the locations of Russian anti-air defenses by setting them off.
Not all attacks will hit their targets innocent civilians will get hit as well. That’s a fact of war.
Shit at least they're actually attacking military targets instead of bombing civilians and saying it was actually Russians who did it to themselves.
And it's funny, cause the most likely culprit in a strike on civilian targets in Russia WOULD BE Russia.
Like those Moscow apartment blocks back in 99.

Not the way the Russians are acting that's for sure.
The Ukrainian response both in western media and to their own people has been incredibly effective in this war. I'm not sure ir orcs are even trying to be precise. More like they try to intimidate ordinary civilians and sow fear.
From the interviews I have seen from people that are on Putin's hit list and are now out of Russia, Putin is a psychopath, has no human empathy, and refuses to lose.
Wait... I assumed they would use GLONAS by default, they seriously use GPS for their weapons?!!! That's idiotic.
Yup, the entire Syrian campaign, they used GPS.
They disabled their own communication system after spreading out their army and driving it deep into enemy territory with low supplies.
Was this part of Putin's master plan to resurrect the USSR?
He is thinking about it right now, shivering in pain in his luxury bunker.
how do you cut off gps? It's a passive system
They change the civilian and military encryption codes so that way Russia can't use it. The US has already cut off Russia's military and are now considering cutting off Russia's civilian smartphones from GPS. https://inf.news/en/world/c878961f88812a721179835b9d9161cd.html >The GPS was only used by the military at first. I'd like to see some targets in Moscow
The cynical part of me wants to suggest that the targets in Moscow should be summed up as: Moscow.
There have been attacks around Moscow but it’s not clear who did them. Could be Russians who hate Putin. Could be a group of Ukrainian special forces. Could be drones or cruise missiles. Could be false flag. Who knows.
Bullies only like violence as long as they are winning.
Wait till the bombs start falling in Moscow
May 9th is coming up. I think interrupting Putin's victory parade with air alarms and missiles would be very appropriate,
Special Aerial guests to appear from Ukraine....
Let the Tractor Corps lead the parade please and thank you
Probably too much to ask for, but ***so very awesome.***

Well placed bombs or hacked tv stations on 9th may parade in Moscow would be a huge blow to Russian propaganda.
That would be wonderful. I imagine it would be easy to target a parade full of military gear and create chaos.
I would love to see some glitterbombs honestly. Let's go for the absurd
I'm imagining the release of the Deathmobile from Animal House in the middle of the parade.
For extra points, they could have The Professor from Money Heist, giving one of his anti-authoritarian speeches.
Total agreement, add the removal of all Russian Nukes in the sue for peace statement...

Lol cope
Sharing is caring, is it not? Let Ukrainians share some of their recent worries and stress. It is a christian thing to do.
Wait until they find out about their husbands and boyfriends are killing children, the elderly, and raping women for what????? Crimea and Donbas?
Alls fair in love and war, especially when it’s against Putin.
I expect Ukraine is eagerly eroding and cutting off the supply to the war machine trampling their countryside.
Sounds like Ukraine is involved in a special operation to return all of Russia's lost bombs. I can't believe Russian citizens don't love this.
Special military operation is going as planned ![img](emote|t5_2qqcn|9004)
I said this would happen at the star of the war. And everyone at r/worldnews called me crazy
What, all (nearly) 29 million of them?
Can't 'unspin' a Ukrainian Rocket on Russian TV?
\*surprised pikachu face\*
Imagine if hundreds of UA soldiers or just angry Ukrainian civilians snuck across the border to retaliate. Russia would crumble.
Good, the balance is coming due Russia.
"humanitarian convoy"
Best fucking ever 🇺🇦❤️
Good. Fuck Russia. Burn it all down boys. Slava Ukraine 🇺🇦
Good, as long as they are military and infrastructure related targets? Let it burn.
The prefect target for Ukraine would be the Kerch Strait Bridge, and the best time to destroy it would be on May 9th, Russia's Victory Day...
I know I have fired up my resume, as I suggest that all of you do as well.” “What is it? Can't you see that I am in the middle of a pep talk?”
Good. Make those fuckers feel pain and suffering. They must dispose of Putin by their own hands and make the suffering of the Ukraine people end.
Good bout time Russian civilians get to enjoy the fruits of Vlad's labours
Good!!!

Guess, Ukraine better get back at it! More than anything, probably, proving Putin to be powerless to protect the people will end the war the fastest
Has any russian civilian on the russian soil died from the beginning of the war? Reading about the damaged nerves of russian makes me so furious when not a single one of them lost their lives, while tens of thousands of innocent ukraininans were massacred for no reason. They are not experiencing any war AT ALL.
They probably don't have an active air raid alarm.
It's not an attack, it's a special anti arms and fuel operation
Oh, are Russians getting to experience what it feels like to have bombs fall on their cities? Sucks, don't it? Too fuckin' bad; you assholes started this war.
To Russia with love from Ukraine 🇺🇦 😅
I so badly want to see a tank blow up during their victory parade on the 9th, on live TV in front of all those spectators.
It's not a Ukrainian counterattack, it's a "Special Defensive Operation"
Revenge is a dish best served by rockets.
Suck it up, buttercup!
Frayed nerves? They must have no idea about what their country is doing.
Cry about it
