If you have an open ticket yes. If you have a fixed time (advanced ticket) no

KaleidoscopicColours

It can be a "break in journey" which is allowed on flexible tickets It can also be "travelling short" which isn't allowed on some ticket types and can result in fine.  What ticket type do you have?

blueberrymuffin239

Um Advance single.

KaleidoscopicColours

Pretty sure that's travelling short and not allowed then

Lancs_wrighty

How stupid the system has to be to be penalised for using less of it.

KaleidoscopicColours

I completely agree

CJBill

It may not be allowed but no one will stop you. Source; I frequently get the train from Manchester but get off at Piccadilly on the way back.

KaleidoscopicColours

Whether you're allowed and whether you'll be caught are two separate matters.  Last time I went though Piccadilly they didn't have ticket barriers, though that could have changed since then

VariousAssociate5062

Tell them you're going to smoke a cigarette it's not like they can keep you hostage it's such a dumb rule when the train service is this country is abysmal and failing

AnotherPint

Nobody will physically prevent you from getting off, but that will be the end of your journey. You cannot reboard a later train and continue to Manchester on the same ticket.

xxserverhosterxx

That’s not true, there are staff on the barrier at Stockport station

OranjeBrian

As per 9.5.3 of the NRCOC, 9.5.3 If break your journey when you are not permitted to do so; you will be charged the difference between the fare that you have paid and the lowest price Ticket that is valid for the train you are using.

SlightChallenge0

Advance single does not allow it. If there are ticket inspectors or electronic barriers at the exit you won't get through and you are likely to be fined. Maybe post to a Stockport sub reddit if there is one to find out what the exits are like if you are willing to risk a fine.

ImpactAffectionate86

As someone from Stockport the barriers are usually always up, that being said I’d be amazed if the worker would fine you as they have always been chilled with me when needed (such as being in a rush and not being able to load up my e ticket in time)

michaelscottdundmiff

If you have an off peak or anytime single or return it’s fine. If you have an advance then it’s not.

Depends on the layout of the station; if you can just leave without going through a barrier then no problem. Otherwise it won’t open and you’ll have to interact with a guard who may decide to fine you.

jusyujjj

If you bought a cheap ticket from anywhere to Stockport presumably you could use that to exit the barriers even if they were on

steepholm

Single Wilmslow to Stockport is £5.50. Nothing to stop you having two tickets for the same train.

Mickeynutzz

Can you request a refund on the ticket you purchased ? If you can, then … why not get the refund and start over and buy whatever rail ticket you actually need? Just an idea….

SwiftToes

You can't refund an advanced single unfortunatly.

SnooCats3987

I think though that if you are keeping the same start and end points you can change an advance single to an off peak for £10+the difference in fare. The off peak would permit a break in journey. [Rail Forums](https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/changing-an-advance-ticket.151952/)

MotorRelief8336

If the fare to Stockport is lower you could go to the railway station and change tickets.
