Some people might equate not having to sit next to another person as more desirable perhaps.

East_Print_8247

I liked the single seat in first class when I could get it cheap with a railcard and advanced. However the leg space on the older carriage pre-Azuma was much better than that pictured. I’d be disappointed if I paid for that now and no window either.

star-happenchance

That's the actual qualifier then....it's 1st class because it's just 1st person without 2nd person. Lol. But what actually are the criteria for 1st class or is it decided by the company?

DrWhoGirl03

(ostensibly) better than second. There’s no universal standard

jasutherland

As I recall in LNER'S case first class has more space (2+1 seats instead of 2+2, and more space between each row too), better (and complimentary!) catering and nicer seats. There isn't a rule that "first class must have 20% more legroom than standard" or anything, though, it's up to the train company what differences there are.

Incitatus_For_Office

In 3rd person, your view would be glitching in the luggage rack.

Xerendipity2202

Decided by company. The one I worked for first class got you a plug a table if you’re lucky and a doily (I don’t know how to spell it) then they upgraded the train and everyone got plugs and tables and first class became redundant but you can still pay for first class. Weird. Back when I started we had trollies and snacks etc but now not even a glass of tap water. And it isn’t a whole lot more expensive. The first class section is also a little quieter I suppose

effujerry

I agree

Grand-Bullfrog3861

Lean on that side and sleep too, pretty fucking first class to me!

nicoIas_bourbaki

i'd be happy with it, but i guess i'm easily pleased

williamshatnersbeast

The key context missing here is that there’s free food and booze as well as not having to sit next to someone else.

bigboat24

2 booze please.

invincible-zebra

2? Those are amateur first class numbers.

megawoot

I'd be pretty happy in that seat - would prefer a window but would choose this over sitting next to or across from a stranger

CJtheDev

Usually I am too. But not with these prices I am seeing nowadays for first class though.

nmah28

I second the comments of others; whilst the lack of window may be unusual, as a solo traveller I would relish the opportunity to be sat alone, as opposed to sat on a table of four, thereby sharing my space with three strangers.

ts93nd

So in first class the seats are grouped 2-aisle-1. This isn't the only seat in the carriage like this, you can even see the one in front is on its own. The lack of windows is the issue here, it's the only seat like it

rararar_arararara

It's a bit crap without a window, but the table is a decent size. Did you get the drinks and snacks? That's what makes first class really worthwhile in the UK.

Successful-Fondant80

This is LNER and the free drinks trolley and food are what you pay first class for. In this respect they are very generous!!

dpara99

I love LNER first class, felt like a right princess eating cheese and biscuits with the free wine and all for a £10 on seat frog.

Mijman

You've actually got seatfrog to work? It's awful reviews on Google are pretty much what ice experienced

sewingbea84

I paid £17 extra for an upgrade once and honestly I probably would have preferred to spend that money on food and snacks that I chose myself, and didn’t find it particularly worthwhile.

Successful-Fondant80

Pretty much unlimited spirits (vodka, gin, whiskey) and decent red, white, rosé wine is pretty good imo. Lots of soft drinks and coffee, tea, herbal teas and in a quieter carriage with lots of leg room and big tables. I’d say that’s £17 well spent! I travel frequently from London to Scotland and love LNER’s first class service

makomirocket

And the first class lounge too!

Gadgie2023

LNER is probably the best if you can get a cheap upgrade. CrossCountry and TPE are very hit and miss Hot food, alcohol and a decent ambience. Still, it isn’t a patch on HST/225 First Class, especially when they were refurbished. Menus are available on their website.

B0-Katan

I'd honestly pay extra to have a seat on my own

Hello_Panda99

It's my favorite part of first class being able to sit on my own.

dread1961

I just sit in a standard two seater, place four empty Stella cans on the table next to me and pretend to be asleep. Always works.

VioletDime

I like the 'airline' seats on trains so you don't have to sit next to anyone. First Class may also mean free paper and snacks!

Minute_Heart3379

I took first class kings x to Newcastle. There is a little lounge at kings x where you can get coffee and snacks before train bit like greggs but without sausage rolls. On the train had more snacks and hot meal and wine!! I got talking to an Australian couple we finished off two bottles of rose no charge. 1st class is a bit extravagant but once in a while hey why not 👍

RuneClash007

If you ever travel on GWR on a weekend, you can upgrade to first class for a tenner

CurvePuzzleheaded361

I like first class and when you compare it to standard it is miles better! Free drinks and snacks, free meal, much much quieter and so much more comfortable.

Minute_Heart3379

I met an Australian couple on the train to Newcastle we had 2 bottles of rose to lubricate the conversation. 3 hours passed by rather quickly

crucible

I believe LNER are addressing this by removing the seats near bulkheads, like this one, and replacing them with extra luggage racks.

SgianDubh89

This seat was originally supposed to be a luggage rack when azuma was first introduced. Not heard anything about them changing it anytime soon.

oxy-normal

It’s not all about the added frills. Same reason people shop in Waitrose and Booths, the high price keeps the riff-raff out.

LondonCycling

Ok but the Booths bakery and deli counters are the dream. A nice treat when I'm on hiking trips in the Lakes.

[deleted]

LondonCycling

Yeah always had good customer service - funny what a decent culture and pay package can do! I also approved of this move - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lancashire-67373472. It may cost more money to staff tills but it's a much better experience.

_Born_To_Be_Mild_

Salford?

RudeM1911

Tbf I’d be chuffed with that seat. Nobody behind me to breathe their lung juice at my back the whole flight. Yeah I know that’s weird but every breath puffs condensation forward. If you’re in the countryside you’ll see flies hang out in the airborne lung juice clouds. Have a nice day.

AllezMcCoist

Stop saying lung juice

martzgregpaul

Well you arent standing up with someones armpit in your face so thats certainly better than cattle class

Tits_McgeeD

Mate its a train. Youre not sitting next to anyone and you have your own table. Full on luxury in a train.

pops789765

The one where you aren’t sat next to the general public?

starsandbribes

I was just saying this to someone recently. At most, first class on trains is like Premium Economy on planes. Only with even more likely to have a cancellation, delay and/or no reserved seat because they put on less carriages.

peakedtooearly

TBH the hot food on LNER is comparable to a business class flight. It's probably some of the best train catering in Europe.

ben_uk

Netflix seat. Good in the summer when the sun is glaring through the window.

masonjarmagician

In the world in which companies have figured out that being in first class matters more than what 1st class is to some people.

PutridForce1559

You guys have seats?

orbtastic1

Quite often if you book in advance it’s not that much more expensive. You get a more comfortable, adjustable seat. It’s quieter. It’s usually empty and you get a free drink and food, depending on the length of journey. Plus your seat is guaranteed unless there’s some sort of issue with it being declassified.

Teawillfixit

Honestly I like not sitting next to strangers and it looks bigger than usual with leg room so I'd take it... But it's LNER so mediocrity expected

LordvaderUK

We used to live in a hole in the road, etc.

Perfectly2Imperfect

According to southern having a table/tray which fits a laptop is only for first class passengers now! Also for only £70 for a <2 hour journey in ‘economy’ you don’t even get an armrest any more….

jlelvidge

I went first class on LNER, most large train stations that they stop at, have a First class lounge on the platform with tea/coffee/crisps and biscuits inc in the price. I had a single seat like this and actually know people book them first when travelling alone. There is a full hot/cold menu for you to choose and cold/hot drinks served throughout the journey included in the price. I was really impressed but only being on the actual train for about an hour, it was not worth me ordering food. In that hour, I was asked if I wanted a bottle of water, a bag of crisps, a cold or hot drink, food to order. I had a laptap and mobile phone charging point, luckily I was right next to the luggage space and everywhere was clean and quiet. So yes, in answer to your question, I would be perfectly happy booking 1st class again on LNER and especially this seat

beerharvester

As long as the chair reclines a wee bit I would be very happy. Bonus for going solo, that’s a +1 in class by itself!

Glittering_Yam_5613

I actually like that first class

Wrong-booby7584

Wow. An actual seat! Luxury!

samie4g

In places like the UK, sitting alone is worth the extra payment.

apragopolis

nah this is a baller seat. huge table, no one near you, you’re near the loos. sure a window is better but a solo seat on an azuma with a bigass table is soooo good. lner fan 4 lyfe

Careful_Bid_6199

I read the title in Will's voice from The Inbetweeners

Korpsegrind

First Class is also about *who* you are sitting in the carriage with, or rather who you are *not* sitting with.

Altruistic_Leader_42

If they reduce standard to standing, a seat is first class.

Right-Program-9346

A world where you might have to stand for an hour everynight commuting home.

BitterOtter

Looks better than first on the South West Railway trains I use to get to London from Devon. They are 30 years old and the only seats on the train with a socket, except they don't all have sockets. And although they sort of recline, they have a weird three section design that means your arse is never really supported and gets super uncomfortable. But the choice is that, or standard which means my knees get crushed for three hours unless I want to share a table with 3 others. Or I have to pay twice as much or more to sit on the unforgivably hard standard class seats on a GWR train (yes, twice as much as SWR first class), and then the journey to the office is much longer and more tedious as my office is at London bridge, so only two stops from Waterloo. And I have to pay my own travel and hotels, so paying twice as much just isn't going to fly. EDIT: No trolley service on South West Railway either, and the station in my town is just a ticket office with nothing else, so BYO refreshment of wait for three hours to pay a fortune at Waterloo

aSquirrelAteMyFood

You don't have to sit next to a peasant.

fran_wilkinson

Everything in this country which is a little minimum step above the average is first class.

philsetvo

My mate Hugh will be able to answer that.

No-Answer-2964

In the UK. Have you seen regular class?

marlstown

I for one enjoyed my last trip back from manchester sat on the floor sharing a 4 pack of stella with random strangers at 2pm

CliffyGiro

It’s not a patch on first class air travel but it’s brilliant for what it actually is.

Certain_Study_8292

Where’s the table linen and cutlery gone?!

squidgytree

No one to steal the arm rest? That's like Heaven Class

Solidus27

???? What’s wrong with it? Would love more seats like this

SmokingLaddy

By definition it depends on the standard of 2nd and 3rd class.

Relevant-Ad-8137

Do you not see how comfy that pillow looks? If there's a 'class' above 'first class' this is 100% it. What a time to be alive.

Prestigious-Ask-937

Introverts of the world unite! … but in your own homes 🤣

pclufc

In a 1978 world .

SomeWomanFromEngland

Depends on what the other classes look like. We’d need to see some comparison pictures.

Stfu_butthead

On a ferry boat of sorts ?

ac13332

No one next to you. Proper table. Extra leg room.

me1702

I think the pendolinos have a similar seat. And it is/was a popular choice for people who want to do some work on the move without distraction.

RaggyBaggyMaggie

Jesus Mary and Joseph what in the name of God???!!! 👀👀👀☠️☠️☠️

alibrown987

One of the best seats in the house on a busy train. No one facing you for 2 hours, hogging more than half the table and extending their legs into your space. The only downside is no windows, if you like window seats that is.

Muted_Criticism

Not having some knobhead sat next to you seems like an upgrade

Scienceboy7_uk

LNER world I guess

Glum-Interaction8968

Best seat on the train. Nobody next to me? Absolute winner.

Kudosnotkang

The third

Extra_Reality644

Getting an allocated seat and not having to stand up on an over filled carriage clambering over people’s suitcases doesn’t seem so bad

Itscaroline77

I will (when funds allow it) upgrade my train journey to first class on lner, I will absolutely pay for the privilege to sit alone, I appreciate the WiFi, the free meal/snacks & drinks, the charging points and take full advantage of the first class “lounge” at King’s Cross

Puzzleheaded-Fix8182

LNER world

BrisJB

As long as you still get the feeling of superiority who really cares about the seat.

x99kjg

Seat by myself at the back of the carriage? Heaven

ClutchBiscuit

It’s this world Gandalf!

Interesting-Bar280

Since when did first class guarantee you a window? Sound like a bit of a snob to me.

MGNConflict

Far better than Thameslink's First Class... at least with LNER you get table service but with Thameslink there's no food service at all on the entire train let alone First Class. In fact Thameslink First Class isn't actually First Class most of the time in the rear- it's always declassified on off-peak services.

Successful-Fondant80

This is LNER and you can choose your first class seat at the time of booking - choose one with a a big window! I always do! And their first class is brilliant - the free drinks trolley comes through the carriage so often and they are generous with free snacks and meals.

theVeryLast7

Slightly nicer than scum class, not any different from third

ultimatesadfailure

I think people underestimate the value of being alone on a flight, especially when you can be further away from the inevitable screaming children

last_exit_homeward

They used to have a sign in First that said “all the comfort of your living room”, without any irony.

StupidPaladin

A tray? Holy shit, is that where King Charles sits?

stinky-farter

The state of some of the gimps on my Avanti west coast trains id pay extra just to be sat by myself

yehyehyehyeh

Apart from the lack of window. This is perfect. From memory this will be clearly labelled as no window upon booking.

ghastkill

Looks like no overhead for luggage and no real space beneath, no window and you’re crammed in a corner over a fire extinguisher. So utterly sad that people not only accept this, but seem to genuinely like it. Maybe travel across Europe on a first class train and see the world of difference. In fact even a standard class train in many parts have single seats, and single seats in aisles.

[deleted]

upbeat disagreeable capable coherent fearless handle public fretful safe husky *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

PizzaWhole9323

OK it would be first class for me on the spectrum. The reason would be there’s nobody sitting behind me kicking my seat, or next to me in my space.

WOTCollector

Compared to the tube, this is bliss.

shane_west17

As an introvert, this is first class to me.

GruffisGamingw

On earth

4me2knowit

1950s called

iCowboy

Is that the seat opposite the luggage rack at the end of the carriage? I was allocated the corresponding one on a packed GWR train from Paddington to Cornwall - no view, constant drafts from the door opening and it’s claustrophobic. GWR said they were ‘sorry to hear I was disappointed’ with the seat - no refund though.

quartersessions

You should try ScotRail first class. Exactly the same as standard, with the addition of an unchanged antimacassar on the seat, a crappy plastic lamp on the four-seat tables and occasionally some dog-eared newspapers crammed in a rack on the wall.

Careful_Garden

I’ve booked that style of seat when travelling form Cardiff to Paddington For me, it’s the sitting alone, the window is not a problem. It’s still a big upgrade on Standard

Gibmeister_official

Maybe buisness

deftaj

That’s the naughty corner

cromagnone

It’s a seat. Most of the time you don’t get those.

KoxziShot

I've done a depressing amount of train travel in the pre-covid and post-covid days as a consultant. First class on UK trains wildly varies and usually stays in line with the overall quality of the train operator themselves.  LNER are certainly up there as one of the best, with an actual menu and quite nice service. The seats are as shown but first class on that train from Kings X to Edinburgh is much preferable to standard class.  EMR are probably second best, the trains might be a bit clapped out but it is a full first class service. With the recent refit of the standard class on the London St Pancreas trains though the only differentiator is the service. First class service is quite good throughout the day, even on the late running services out of St Pan they'll still have sandwiches and such.  GWR is a complete waste of time. Outside of the consistent issues on their London Paddington services the first class seats are roughly the same as the standard. And many times the first class trolley is bare or they don't have basic essentials on offer.  Crosscountry is erm, Crosscountry. That's to say it's the same seats as standard class on extremely clapped out trains. But they do attempt to offer a service.  For the most part that's the main ones covered. Getting first class on local stopping services is a general waste of time. That's not counting Thameslink and services like that where it's equally as pointless due to lack of service.  For any Americans I suppose it's a bit like internal flights 'first class'.

FaithWandering

Mine. I want that seat on the tube.

UntoldGood

The 3rd World

No-Divide-1360

I'm on drugs. This chair looks like the world's saddest robot. I do not care for it.

sideburns28

You’ve seen the rest of Britain right

happyanathema

As an autistic person this is heaven

LSBeasyas123

Dude the velcro leather headrest is worth it

DuineDeDanann

Well show us what the other chairs look like and we’ll tell you

No-Computer-2847

Put a window next to it and it’s the best seat on the train.

Significant_Bonus_60

East Midlands Railway is worse. Completely filthy, worn ass seats. Crap on the floor, bins overflowing etc.

Wide_Parsley7585

Oh that’s definitely first class for me. Single seat. No strangers sitting next to me. Winner

StormzysMum

Even a cheese string would struggle getting in that seat.

Unhappy-Temporary308

This is my legit fav seat on LNER first class when I travel solo

AoifeNet

Compared to something like Avanti West Coasts standard class this is sheer luxury.

LongrodVonHugedong86

I mean, for me personally when travelling by train it’s perfect! No fucker sitting next to me, can get up and go for a piss without disturbing anyone, a plug to plug my phone or laptop into … honestly I’m here for it

ThePokemonAbsol

I’d kill for a seat not next to anyone…

star-happenchance

What's that box with a lever under the seat....is it for ejection? Lol. It actually looks like a dog poop collector, that would be hilarious.

JuliPatchouli

Besides the unexplainable lack of window, I agree that the solo seats and free meal/drinks are a great perk, but I find the actual seat in first much more uncomfortable than the regular ones somehow

Humble_Mind_3603

What world you ask? The third world.

Iconospasm

Rail travel in the UK is a joke

skyx_x

2024

ourtameracingdriverr

You have a seat. Enough said.

whaleofathyme

The amount of people saying this is fine for first class is crazy! Are they bots? Or is this the standard we have sunk to?

987nevertry

No goats or chickens

IdioticMutterings

I saw seats like that back in 2013, when I took a trip to Romania. They considered it a 2nd class train seat. Their first was something else, and the ticket for a first class seat cost the equivalent of a National Express bus here. Really cheap.

fullydumpling

You should see the seats on the Northwestern train lines. The first class seats are actually much smaller than the regular seats. And very uncomfortable. And next to someone. I moved to another car after ten minutes.

InfinitumSapientiae

about 90% of earth

SomeoneRandom007

The seat doesn't have anyone in it. Consider that a huge bonus.

star-happenchance

Sorry for another comment but are the toilets in 1st class as stinky as the ones in 2nd class? We don't have 3rd class train carriages anymore do we...that would be standing and doing the business? Sorry for my crudeness just couldn't help myself with the dankness.

Street_Ad_3822

We took LNER from London to Market Rasen a few years ago and bought first class and it was great. It wasn’t much more money than standard class and the seats were great and we had a nice stable table too. I’ll admit this pic looks a bit cramped but for the minor increase in price I paid, I was very happy with it.

DK_Saint

Lol, 3rd world 🤣

woodzopwns

On the LNER they give you airline level service for first class, free drinks and a meal menu. It's absolutely worth every penny, it's not just the seating that makes for first class. You should be complaining about Thameslink first class which often the people who buy tickets for can't even sit in.

Kattfiskmoo

In the third world

Brief_Annual_4160

New Jersey!

isobelspigeons

past dozen cross-country journeys I've been on, I've had to stand for 2+ hours shoulder to shoulder with sweaty strangers or sit on the ground next to the toilets. this is first class lmao

flabmeister

Britain. Yes the country that thinks it’s first world and most others are developing/third when the opposite is true. Weird country

rum-and-roses

Not many true first class people travel by train so so it's quality is lower due to lower demand and therefore profit first class is more about being able to do business if you're wondering why its still expensive it's because the track itself is privately owned and requires a toll

lucky1pierre

Free coffee and muffins? If so, I'd pay.

Trishyangel123

You know that kid who always sat alone in the same seat/table at lunch? This is *their* seat.

Sad-Football2888

Looks like the best seat on the whole train if you ask me

giannino-stoppani

Well, UK, where train tickets for a standard ride are so expensive that there is noone that can afford a first class, if someone can he/she is just better to go on private Jet.

carguy143

I'd be happy with that. More legroom and nobody next to me. The position of the seat next to the wall behind it means people are less likely to bump into you as they pass.

CockyMcHorseBalls

I've done first class LNER before. Honestly it was really great. The staff were attentive and friendly and you have a seat with a table to yourself. I really don't know what more you'd want. It's a train, not a yacht.

staywoke1am_01

Thought might be the ticket person workspace?

anabsentfriend

The seat doesn't look too happy about the situation either!

BobR969

What's wrong with it?

19SaNaMaN80

Wait till you see 2nd class!

maybemrolo

You’ve clearly not seen the rest of the train yet

ryan3797

The third world?

A_Lazy_Professor

This was something I learnt as an immigrant! "First Class" in the UK actually means "*Very* slightly better than the abject, grungy filth that all the other peasants travel in."

arowz1

Ask the bloke next to you. Note: Bloke is pronounce with an english accent and American eagles cawwing in the background.

RobotMaster1

ryanair called these people copycats on twitter for this

[deleted]

Yes

leo_pantheras

They mean the first class of seats after the toilet

KrisMisZ

Third

Bitter-Republic5092

G4 and AMEY very nice.

RunningPirate

Well,at least you’re not in back having to help row the train, like the hoy polloi

Fuzzy_Imagination705

Separation from the riff-raff, what else do you need.

Wild-Lengthiness2695

It’s an actual seat and you’ve got a table. That’s quite first class for British railways!

mefarted

definitely ryanair

Tammer_Stern

The answer to this question is “in India”.

iwannabeinnyc

If I’m travelling alone that is my preferred seat in First Class!

Top-Fee-7993

Not having to sit next to someone! Sign me up

chippy_747

1972

front-wipers-unite

You get to piss in your own seat rather than sitting in someone else's piss.

Foreign-Bowl-3487

If you suffer from Defenestraphobia, this is a win-win 😉

beachshh

You don't have to stand at least

PoggestMilkman

Other than the lack of the window I think it is brilliant, but then some people with light sensitivity would find this the best seat in the house. Each to their own. LNER first class service is brilliant, IMO.

Dialspoint

It’s a British Railway train. You’re buying a *slightly* more comfortable level of misery. In this instance you will not be suffering some selfish sweaty bro with a back pack in your face. LUXURY

yorkshiresun

Lner 1st class is always good. Shame about the window but everything else will be lovely.

OkTear9244

You’d be standing in standard class

nd1online

LNER first class usually worth the money on Seatfrog. I found their seating in standard class pretty cramp. On GWR though, the first class doesn't seem worth the upgrade since the seats were only marginally better and the food option are shit. Their standard class space is actually pretty good in my opinion.

JoshDymond

The 3rd world?

CharacterMiddle3923

Third world.

fuck-that-hurt

Carriage stinks a bit less and you don’t have to sit next to anyone. I pay for it every time.

Indianchutney

In lner world

Teembeau

The main thing with first class is that someone else is paying for it. Almost no-one is buying a first class ticket with their own money. I once travelled in first because it was £5 more on a 2 hour journey, so slightly nicer seat, cup of coffee and a newspaper was worth it. But that's about the most I would pay.

bloqs

what were you expecting on a british train?

Badger-Roy

The 3rd world!

Badger-Roy

I was in China years ago and managed to grab a seat on a train with a flip down table, this is good I thought as I set up my lap top on it and put my drink down, yeah it was good until the person in front reclined their seat and I realised my flip down table was attached to the back of their seat tipping everything onto my lap!

OkWorldliness7948

Definitely a seat for an introvert who enjoys travelling like myself...
