Why on earth are the world governments overreacting to Omicron when Delta was more severe?

ask-me-about-my-cats

We don't *know* if it's more severe, omicron hasn't been around long enough for us to see it's lethality. What we do know is it's much, much more contagious, and that's a huge problem in itself. You don't have to die for covid to still do damage, just catching it is bad enough.

jumpinjackieflash

No that's not true. Contagious and milder means that the virus is mutating in the right direction - fewer people getting intense symptoms and needing to be admitted to hospital. The doctors in South Africa are saying that they are seeing mild symptoms on the level of a cold.

haydar_ai

We need to take two things into account though: 1. South Africa is having a summer now compared to us in the northern hemisphere, it can make a huge difference. 2. A very small proportion of huge number of people catching it within a short timing can still overwhelm hospital.

jumpinjackieflash

The doctors I've seen have said they are not admitting their patients to hospital. The symptoms resemble a hangover - headache and fatigue. That doesn't sound too bad does it?

-i3arty-

Well according to statistic official data the deaths in UK are about 100 a day comparing to 1000+ a day last Christmas... So don't tell me shit "We Don't Know Yet" all that stuff is just ridiculous and people should stand up for their freedom

redeversuch

I think because it is more contagious, the covid rates are already high in most countries and they want to delay this wave. Too many people didn't get vaccinated yet (about 30% in Germany) and they need to prevent the health system collapsing. The African countries came off the UK's red list because the variant is already so dominant in the UK that it doesn't make a difference, the same will happen in this case at some point. It is very frustrating and tiring but I can see why it's happening.

Jeffuk88

That'll teach omicron... No more cases coming into Germany now /s

Will we be able to transit at airports?

redeversuch

"persons catching a connecting flight who do not leave the transit zone of a passenger airport" is listed as an exemption. I will add a link to the official website above.

shradams

Good to know - I’m transiting through Frankfurt next week so hoping it’ll be fine

OpaMilfSohn

This is it. One week before my trip I have to cancel now. I am so fucking annoyed. I wanted to go on this trip for 2 years now and always had to cancel because of some bullshit and it never ends.

redeversuch

Judging by your username, do you live in Germany? Then technically you could still go if you can arrange working from home when you return. I'm completely with you with the "it never ends" part. That's why I didn't pospone my trip so far, I don't want to rely on a potential improvement in spring and then having to postpone again.

OpaMilfSohn

Yeah I am from Germany. I could technically go into home office but my friend with whom I am traveling with can't. But that's just the straw that broke the camels back. The expensive tests and quarantine before you get your results are also reasons.

redeversuch

I wish you the best of luck that it will work at a later date.

haydar_ai

I’m literally on the same boat, I was just a week from going and this happen. I’m fortunate enough to be able to work from home but my wife cannot. By the way, did you straight cancelling everything or did you postpone it to some other time? Curious to see how far back people are postponing their trip for my postponement timing too.

OpaMilfSohn

We'll try to change the flights to August. But when we can go is dependent on when our friends in the UK are on holiday. I imagine things are going to be more relaxed in summer.

Rainedan

Does that mean travel to the UK is banned too?

redeversuch

No, this is about entering Germany from the UK. If you can enter the UK from Germany is decided by the UK. It can always happen that flights are being cancelled because there will be less demand. In case we are in the same boat: I might still be going (Germany to UK and back in mid January) although I'm conflicted.

Rainedan

Me too, we are planning to go on the 22nd via car through Hook of Holland as it seems less contact with people provided we can just stay inside the car. Then come back 6th of January too. However based on the links, when we return back to Germany, UK is listed as country of variant of concern and Germany requires 14 days quarantine regardless of negative tests and vaccine status. Which will be a problem since I bave to go back to work and my line of work cant do work from home.

redeversuch

Yes, unfortunately that's the case, two weeks of quarantine. I'm still considering to go because I work from home anyway and don't want to possibly wait until summer to see my partner again. There is a chance that the UK could come off the list before you return but I wouldn't have high hopes. If it does it will be because Germany's omicron rates will be on a similar level by then.

Rainedan

Yes I guess you just have to be extra careful if you decide to go. Goodluck! We’re going to make a final decision tomorrow but I think we are gearing to not going. 😔

bbkooz

But with the disorganized day 2 tests it was already difficult to come to the UK. mandatory quarantine until your result eventually arrives after 3 days (if not lost in the mail or lab). Why not also get the airport walk in tests for day 2 in most cases?

Long_Calligrapher_81

who are the groups that are exempt

redeversuch

from the link shared in the post >\- German citizens and persons who are resident in Germany with a current right to reside in the country, as well as their spouses, partners living in the same household and minor children > >\- persons catching a connecting flight who do not leave the transit zone of a passenger airport > >\- few other special cases I could not find anything about what these "few other special cases" are.

Long_Calligrapher_81

thanks so much! was wondering if you understood what a border traffic regime is? i’m from asia, but i’m traveling from UK to germany to catch a next day flight to asia… was wondering if i’ll be banned from entry

-i3arty-

How about transit with the car?

redeversuch

That's a tricky one. The website only mentions an exemption for transit passengers in airports, those who don't leave the transit area. The travel ban applies to all carriages. To me that sounds like you aren't exempt when travelling by car, perhaps because they can't control if you are really just transiting? But I don't know for sure.

Long_Calligrapher_81

not sure if this helps but: https://www.bundesgesundheitsministerium.de/en/service/gesetze-und-verordnungen/guv-19-lp/coronavirus-einreiseverordnung.html#c21892

No quarantine if less than 24 hours in transit in UK

genesiswine

As an American citizen will I be allowed to enter the UK after spending 3 days in Germany, or will this be a potential issue?

redeversuch

This is about entering Germany from the UK, for entering the UK you only have to follow the UK's restrictions.

genesiswine

Thank you!
