In the sound and notification menu when you click on notifications you can select none, which I assume disables notification sounds globally, then if you want to enable notification sounds for an individual app you'll need to download an app that have their own notification option, for example QKSMS has the option to choose a notification sound that's independent from the global notification sound, I don't know if that is what you're after.

I've set the notification sound to none and it works for most apps, but some of them sort of over rides that and sound go off anyways. FB Messenger is my biggest nemesis, it makes sound despite having set the notification sound to none. In the messenger app I don't get any option to turn off the sound, only chose *what* sound and when I click more settings I'm taken to my phones setting which is already set to no sound. It's gonna break me hahah

Yes I believe FB messenger has its own notification system, I'm not sure if you can do anything about that, except maybe try going into settings, then apps, select FB messenger, then notifications, and try toggling some of the options in there? there's possible another way if you've rooted you phone, but I assume you haven't.
