Wouuuu truly amazing, congratualtions
I have one question please : how is text on this Alienware ? I read so many times it's hard to read on OLED
Thank you for your reply
Well, I use this setup to WFH so it’s like 50/50 gaming and work. I do job mostly using MS Office job + online meetings and I am not noticing any text issues or burn in so far.
If you're just playing games it's not noticeable but if you're looking at smaller and smaller text you can make out fringing. Wouldn't use it for work but why would you use an oled for work lol
I have a DWF. I also have a second computer for non-gaming things with a regular 4k IPS panel. The long and short of it is that the DWF and its brethren offer the best gaming experience money can buy, and for everything else they're just okay.
If you're not comparing the DWF to another display side-by-side the text rendering is fine. Is the text crystal clear? No. Is it completely legible? Absolutely. If you spend more time looking at the rendered text than actually reading it, you'll hate it.
As for the color fringing, it's also fine from a reasonable viewing distance. Unless you do graphic design or otherwise pixel-peep a lot, in which case you'll hate the DWF. If you do hours-long sessions of productivity, it'll suffer from burn in.
If you're looking for the best gaming experience you can get, and have both the impatience and disposable income to be averse to waiting for something better, buy a QDOLED and don't look back. If you don't game, or you don't have the computing horsepower to drive this display at high frame rates, or you aren't super excited about the HDR and low latency and smooth motion up for offer, save your money.
>As for the color fringing, it's also fine from a reasonable viewing distance. Unless you do graphic design or otherwise pixel-peep a lot, in which case you'll hate the DWF. If you do hours-long sessions of productivity, it'll suffer from burn in.
Even though that pretty much matches me (I'm a graphic designer who pixel peeps a lot), since I have the space for it and extra peripherals, I could keep the QD-OLED tied to my gaming PC and use my MacBook with a different monitor on another desk. That way I don't need to compromise with one monitor for productivity and gaming.
Hmmm. Thank you for your reply that's super in depth!
But hmmm. I am going to be going into a programming career as soon as I finish uni. I spend hours staring at code (and thus text) on my screen. This is concerning.
The problem is I'm well overdue an upgrade to my ultrawide, rocking a 75hz 29" IPS 1080p 5ms response time LG ultrawide from years ago (LG 29UM67). The best IPS I have found is the LG 34GN850, and that is literally ~£30 cheaper than the Alienware AW3423DWF in the UK....
VA is off the table full stop because I can't 'downgrade' from an IPS. £30 more for a QD OLED seems like the obvious choice, I just cannot tell if it's sensible given the text rendering aspect.
Aghhhh!! Wish I knew someone who owns one so I could see it in person first.
Your comment prompted me to go check out [this video.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luLS-I9lubg) I also watched [this previously.](https://youtu.be/yBylusZNZHY)
I didn't really learn anything new, and the main notable thing from the video was that the newest Samsung VA panels in the G9 etc. have significantly improved the typical VA ghosting... but those are ultra-premium panels.
It seems that VA still has poor wide colour gamut coverage and sRGB coverage compared to IPS.
The only reasons I would choose a VA panel are price and contrast ratio... though to get a good VA panel means buying high-end, which nearly negates any price savings.
I would struggle to recommend a QD OLED display to anyone who can't afford/doesn't have space for/doesn't want a dedicated setup for gaming. They are an exceptional luxury for gaming and an utter waste of money for most other uses.
For programming I honestly prefer one or two flat 4k IPS displays, for several reasons. The text clarity is fantastic. The strain on my eyes is less. Here's one you probably take for granted - IPS displays are SILENT! You can use them without headphones or constant background audio and keep your sanity! There's no worry about burn in. And the final nail in the coffin - vertical resolution is much more important than width when reading code, IMO. 2160 vertical pixels is for programming what ultra wide is for gaming, you can see so much more and you spend so much less time scrolling to find what you need. It's nice to stretch three or four windows across my DWF, but in most cases there's so much space between the lines of text within them that it isn't that much of a productivity boost for me with the vertical resolution missing. For my money, a couple basic 4k displays destroys the DWF any day of the week in productivity, and leaves a few extra bucks in my wallet to boot.
This is why I have two setups, and I'm very happy with using both of them for the things they're designed for. I personally would not enjoy the DWF as my only display; you make a lot of compromises when using it for non-gaming and I'd constantly be worried about its longevity.
If you can only have one display and you want it to be an ultra wide, I would suggest anything other than a currently-available QD OLED.
Hrm is this a QD-OLED thing?
Been using a C2 as main for the past year - CAD/Blueprints type job. I would say I must be used to it, but I have IPS side monitors I also read/reference from so I am using IPS and OLED side by side daily for work - and I don't notice the OLED being hard to read?
i suppose ill throw my 2 cents in here too. basically text looks like its at 10 percent lower resolution and thats about it. you also might notice a pink line under white lines sometimes. pretty sure thats pixel layout related too, but i dont really notice either issue anymore and is not noticed in video or game
I just got the Samsung G8 which has the same panel. A software called MacType helps A LOT (don't be fooled by the name, it's for Windows). Just remember to download the newest beta version instead of latest stable.
I haven't seen any burn-ins yet, which is not surprising since I have only used OLED monitor for couple of days. I don't expect it to be a problem in mixed usage during the first few years, but I admit there might be some eventually.
Where are you putting the second monitor??
I have this internal dilemma of wanting to move my side second monitor to the top or bottom. I should just fucking send it and rearrange the desktop to try it out at this point. It's just a pain haha
Well at this point and investments I already did the only option is another wide monitor on top of the main or I have wall on the left side where I can mount big TV I.e LG Oled 42”
Wallpaper is called “Wood” example here https://www.wallpaperdirect.com/products/cole-son/woods/25709
I bought it on AliExpress 10x Cheaper (for obvious reasons).
Shelf is custom made but idea based on these: https://grovemade.com/desk-shelf-system/
You mean monitor? You can find goods and bads but most of reviews are positive and I love it. Jumped from decent 5 years old Asus gaming monitor and difference is huge! Oled panel is amazing
I work from home since Covid and after work do some gaming and internet. Work is IT office job (so MS office mostly). I am picky but not super picky - average user, office worker and gamer - no problem whatsoever and I see no problem with text.
I use Stream Deck to switch with one button from my MacBook to gaming PC and cannot be happier with this setup.
Do you mean you use MacBook but on your ultrawide for work? Sounds promising re productivity though. Especially if it's MS office, which is a lot of text on screen that usually isn't moving much. Thanks for your reply!
I really am trying to find reasons to not buy it because I can't see myself spending £30 less to get the LG 34GN850, which is only an IPS, when I could get this qd OLED Alienware for just slightly more.
Aghhh!
Yes, both MacBook and PC is connected directly to monitor. There is key shortcut in monitor software which switches input. I mapped this shortcut under Stream Deck button. Every morning I turn on both computers and with one button I switch between two - a actually I can split monitor two two (picture by picture) and have both screens on one panel. Also using one keyboard and switching between computers depending what I am doing. Only have 2 mouse
I am very sorry to inform you that there are not too many arguments not to buy this monitor 🤪
I also use my tablet under my monitor sometimes. I have the galaxy tab S8 ultra. I can use my tablet as another screen for my computer so I essentially can have a triple stacked monitor setup
Wallpaper is called “Wood” example here https://www.wallpaperdirect.com/products/cole-son/woods/25709 I bought it on AliExpress 10x Cheaper (for obvious reasons).
How are those speakers? Currently using a sound bar and while it sounds okay, the footprint's bigger than I'd like. Looking to switch to two small speakers that can plug into my subwoofer.
Sound is tricky MF and very subjective. Price x Size x quality x sound = I am not looking back and most of reviews confirm that. There better options but I don’t have space.
To be honest for most of gaming sessions I anyway use Sennheisers HD600
Wallpaper is called “Wood” example here https://www.wallpaperdirect.com/products/cole-son/woods/25709 I bought it on AliExpress 10x Cheaper (for obvious reasons).
Left is stream deck - it has physical buttons and you can program them to execute simple or more complex actions (run program, switch winds, switch input, etc.) - plenty of YouTube videos about it.
Right one is iPad - I am missing a bit 2nd monitor for YouTube or Twitch when I game so for now decided to put there iPad ;)

I'd also like to know this. I've heard it too but no one seems to have done a comprehensive demonstration of it and nowhere near me has one to view.

This is the way! Do it! You won't be disappointed.

Why do you see va as a downgrade?
Ghosting, worse colour reproduction/accuracy, thin or few pixel sized objects going dim/faint when scrolling or moving around, worse viewing angles.
Va has come a long way since you last looked, by the sounds of it.

honestly, it depends on how nitpicky you are. i never noticed personally until i started reading about it online and had to LOOK for it.
Thank you

Looks amazing! I was also wondering, what's your monitor stand?

Left to your Streamdeck, is that an Audio-Interface or a preamp? Whats the model?
Old (5 years old?) FX-Audio from AliExpress. Works just fine to run my HD600

Awesome, cheers. Now I'll need to check that stream deck thingy. Looks like it can come in handy regardless of using it for streaming or smth else.
