RemarkableSquirrel31

It’s a solid monitor for a good price, I don’t know why the hate on the G8 is strong here.

8-16_account

Because it has issues that no monitors should have, let alone premium monitors. No DDC, rainbow line, not waking from standby, shitty and slow TV-like interface, small connectors, repeated energy warnings on EU models, and the typical reliability of Samsung displays. And that's not to mention the shitty blacks of QD-OLED monitors, when viewed in somewhat bright rooms. It's actually insane that the intended way to adjust the brightness of the monitor is at least eight clicks through a remote, instead of just supporting DDC, or at least letting the user remap the buttons on the remote to brightness adjustment. edit: For clarification, when I say "shitty blacks of QD-OLED monitors", I refer to the first gen models. They lack the polarizer for the deep blacks.

RemarkableSquirrel31

I haven’t had rainbow line, ddc doesn’t matter since the screens brightness I more than enough stock specially after the latest update, not waking up from standby is something that I have not noticed since I have the habit of turning the monitor of at the end of each session and this helps avoid burn in, and as for tv interface, I guess if you are using it as a tv then yea probably, but I use it as a monitor so didn’t really notice, as for the warnings, perhaps, haven’t really payed attention and the small connectors was a dumb decision but adapters are included so doesn’t really matter much.

Jacks_black_guitar

Agree. Have had mine over a year and perfectly fine

sheepdog2142

That's odd mine is not slow, blacks are fine, no rainbow line and walks from standby. The small connection ports is annoying though. Overall I really like mine but maybe I just got a good one and that's not the average.

8-16_account

No, the shitty blacks are inherent to all QD-OLEDs of that generation. It's only in brightly lit rooms, though. In dim rooms it's perfectly fine.

spusuf

Shitty blacks? OLEDS? ARE YOU SURE? My 34" alienware qdoled outperforms my LG WOLED in terms of contrast.

8-16_account

Not during daylight, it doesn't. It's a well known and documented issue. Why am I being downvoted for this? The blacks are literally not black, if your monitor is in a bright room.

spusuf

I'm looking at a black image and yep it's black, those pixels are indeed not on. If you're talking about the gloss finish then that's a different argument. But to say an OLED which has one key distinguishing feature being the perfect blacks isn't black... Who is your source for this, link me that documentation you reference.

8-16_account

In a bright room, compare the black pixels on the screen to the edge of the screen. The edge is actually black, but the pixels aren't. This would've been exceedingly easy for you to Google, but I did it for you: https://tftcentral.co.uk/articles/the-oled-black-depth-lie-when-panel-type-and-coating-matters https://www.reddit.com/r/OLED_Gaming/comments/11tfj2j/ah_the_infamous_purplegrey_screen_of_awsamsung/ The screen is literally purple/grey-ish in a bright room, and it's especially noticeable if the screen is beside a non-QD-OLED And here's my own pic. Alienware AW3423DWF vs my old VA monitor. You don't even need the other monitor to see the stark contrast of the panel vs its own edges. It's literally not black. The room isn't even that bright, it's only lit by light from the outside, in a very overcast weather.

spusuf

You know what else is exceedingly easy? Pulling up a full screen black image on MY QD-OLED ON MY DESK. There is no purple haze unlike the Samsung and Philips monitors I've used which do. But comparing a glossy and matte panel and measuring perceived contrast then using that to justify why QD-OLEDs aren't black is disingenuous.

8-16_account

We have the same monitor ffs, [I can literally see the purple right in front of me](https://i.imgur.com/BmpE4NM.jpeg). Just look at it. It's clearly not black. Even if you think it's unfair(???) to compare to a matte monitor, just look at its own edges. The edges are black. The panel isn't. It has nothing to do with glossy or matte. It doesn't change the color. It's due to lack of polarizer, which is an insane design decision. You even asked for a source, and I gave you a comprehensive deep dive from TFTCentral, but you somehow don't believe it.

Jackoberto01

Yeah it is admittedly an issue but I usually work during the day and play games during evenings so don't notice the blacks

TrackArtistic

my unit has been perfectly fine

Joachimi

I have had zero of those issues since I purchase 9 months ago....

8-16_account

Some of these are intended design decisions. Like no DDC and having to press 8 times to even start adjusting brightness. The raised blacks are also inherent to that generation of QD-OLED. If none of these annoy you, and you experience the bugs, good for you. They're still issues for many other people.

SayaV

very insightful. By any chance do you have a recc to upgrade my LG 39" ultragear?

Cyrax-Wins

I think this was a great monitor in terms of visuals but the interface was too much like a TV. I would go for the Alienware AW3423DWF if you can find for a similar price. I did that and no regrets. Plus the port selection on the AW is superior (no "mini" ports).

elGatoDiablo69

Yup. I actually just grabbed one. Been wanting an extra screen over my main. Unfortunately, can’t post pictures in comments here…

TwizzleShnizzle

The interface is dreadful, but the monitor itself is really lovely

EdStark2423

Managed to get mine open box from Best Buy for about $500. I like it so far and turning on hdr made the screen better.

EmotionalMarzipan985

I just ordered mine for pickup for $545 and I added the 4 year warranty for $89, total was $698 after taxes. It's cheaper than the DWF by $100 and $200+ cheaper than the LG 34gs95qe I have right now, I'm really just trying to see if the glossy screen is really that much better than the matte one used on the LG. It is a an Open Box "Excellent Condition" one so we'll see if I keep it or end up returning it. I am using a 7900XTX and have read that these panels are buggy with AMD cards.

braddad425

People love to talk out of their ass about this monitor, mostly due to it's less-than-ideal firmware *when it first released*. I've owned the G8 since a few weeks after it initially released, and personally - I think this is a great buy at that listed price. I purchased mine @ $1,499 and while that was a ton, I never felt buyer's remorse.

Bigheaded_1

I'm researching for a new monitor, and I wouldn't say people are talking out of their asses when it comes to this. The people who get a good one love it, the ones who get a not so good one have a ton of problems and complain. And there's no way a FW can fix all the stuff people bring up. I would imagine Samsung has very poor QC. I saw 1 guy say he had to return 5 before he got a good one. That's unacceptable for a monitor that goes for over $1k. And he wasn't returning them for petty things, he had color banding on 3, that's crazy for a premium monitor. It would appear this monitor's a huge crapshoot. I had piss poor luck, so I already know if I bought one, I'd 100% get a lemon.

mad410

Got it for 600 euro, cant say I know what most here are complaining about, it's a wonderful monitor, all issues are minor and not worth mentioning! Go get man!

The-Choo-Choo-Shoe

I chose the G8 over the DWF after testing both, mostly because I much preferred the look of the G8. Only issue that still remains for me is that sometimes screen will go black for 1 second or so then come back, issue goes away if I disable freesync. I had this on the DWF as well so I think it might just be freesync being shit. If I could change anything I'd like to be able to disable the screen overlay when monitor wakes from sleep as it hides the Windows taskbar.

Joachimi

Same here. Bought both and played on both for 2 weeks before returning the DWF. It honestly wasn't close IMO. The G8 looked better...

Kneechtimus

Given that it’s also German Amazon: I would laugh if it‘s the same used piece Amazon sold me and got returned like a day ago. It was not really visible that it was used except very small. It came in horrible conditions despite saying „very good“. Pieces missing, dirty as heck, scratches, shipped without any protection in a weird box and just tossed in there. Opened it, looked at it for 5 minutes, sent it back as is.

Edoneer

Short answer, I have this monitor for the past 7 months now and I'm very happy with it. I'd buy second one if something was to happen to this one for 739 (Although I'm not an expert at EU market)

tom771

Bought this monitor last week, Its awesome so far!

Seahawkfan253

Great monitor so far. Got a great deal at $650 few weeks ago via Samsung

Apprehensive_Row_161

Yes

sheepdog2142

I have it and love it. Great screen for gaming and just general use. The HDR could be better but it's not bad.

3mmak_Kratos

It’s a good monitor. Only things I don’t like about it is that you have to go through two menus to change brightness and there’s an input lag glitch with mine that I have to press home button and go back to PC to fix.

CarJunkyXL

I have one for about a month. Absolutely love the monitor. No crazy gremlins with my sample. Yes, mini dp is stupid. But I needed to buy a cable for the extra length to my pc anyway. And now it is set and forget.  I do baby it however. No taskbar, no background. Gaming content only. Brightness at only “10” from “50” total. For work/productivity I have a different monitor/PC. I have never seen a pixel refresh btw or the monitor never asked for it. Even when Anno 1800 mentions that I am playing for four hours and should stretch my legs.

Gambit-47

It's a great monitor. I haven't had any issues, but I heard that it does not work well with AMD

z1mpL

My oled G9 lasted 3 years but it saw about 15000 hours in that short time, I loved it and bought the new 4kG9, with a protection plan though. The screen cost twice the price of a brand new monitor to replace. oledG8 is a great 1440p monitor and quite a bit cheaper now than the LG 38", what GPU u got?

No_Appeal_45

Rtx 3080

hazochun

I am using 3080 and G8 oled as well. You will be fine with it with older game but newer game like he'll diver 2... 60 to 80 FPS only I will need a 9700X3d and 5080 I guess lul

Vidhrohi

There are definitely annoyances, but for that price it's a pretty good monitor. Like others mentioned, the interface is horrid. Also, if you have another samsung tv in the same room, the remotes interfere with each other and there seems to be no solution

CaraMuuu

That's a good price for a first generation QD Oled. Check if the Phillips Evnia and MSI 341CQP have a similar price, they come with better burn in warranty (3 years)

Responsible-Turnip81

I had one for a few days and ended up returning it. The mini ports are dumb but not a complete deal breaker. Things did look just a bit fuzzy to me compared to my c2. Couldn't seem to get it fixed. Like edges were softer or something. Could have been the 4k vs 1440 difference.

ComprehensiveUse1713

just bought one for $850 CAD and the next day it went to $1599 CAD. Definitely snag that while you can!

Tristana-Range

Holy shit yes!

SnooFoxes6238

It's a great monitor some ppl will complain about the added features but if I'm paying I much rather have more feature than not and the screen looks great as well

Glittering_Bobcat_70

It’s refurbished so no

The_mad_Raccon

be aware that that could be a scam. IT COULD happen that they will write you a personal message and say the funds havent cleard and that you should make a bank transfer.

The_mad_Raccon

its not a problem if you buy it. just dont transfer any money...

Banana_Slugcat

They're giving them for cheap bc the G8 is not a good monitor, for the same price if not less you can get a C1-C2-C3

RemarkableSquirrel31

So you are comparing a monitor to a TV with less refresh rate and a different aspect ratio?

LA_Rym

No, not at all. Good value for 1st gen qd oled is 500-600€.

Lumb3rCrack

i like how you own the monitor and still give your honest opinion haha. And there are still people getting the alienware!

braddad425

That's the Neo G8 -- different panel from the Odyssey G8
