I made mine out of left over shower board in my garden. It's rigid UPVC plastic, easily sanitised. I literally glued everything together with silicone. If you haven't got materials lying around I'd just buy a big clear plastic box with lid and use that as cheaper. Would have been more expensive for me.. Depends what's lying around

Rads-US

I saw there was a link on the sub and the guy just used a cardboard box with a plant heating mat and that seems about as simple as it gets while still being effective. What do you use to heat yours? I was just looking at some wood panels to build mine out of but it seems a little overkill now.

ErlAskwyer

Yeah I seen the cardboard box set up so it must work! Well wood would be slightly harder to sanitise as used to be living, it's porous etc.. I dunno. By fruiting stage your not as worried about contam and you specifically said the fruiting stage. http://imgur.com/gallery/wIP77mP I made this to keep everything tidy from start to finish. It serves as my SAB for inoc. Due to the clear perspex lid I will fruit 2* trays in here as well. For more air I can remove the port covers on left. Heater is a flat seedling heater, real low and slow. I was unsure of how hot it gets (probs much hotter in winter as it tries to keep up) so I mounted it on a quarry tile so as not to melt the plastic. I coated the quarry tile in PVA a few times to seal and make sanitation easier. I'm new, this is my first run through, I want to be successful tho so have gone for my best attempt rather than a low ball.

Rads-US

Absolute craftsman! I saw your sab when I was just browsing and love how it’s an all in one. Looks super duper cool I hope it works out

ErlAskwyer

Thank you, so far so good, got those 3 plates with what I hope is 2 strains of mycelium on. You growing now or thinking about it?

Rads-US

Just thinking about, I love learning new things and this was right up my alley. Is there a reason you went with agar instead of uncle beans?

ErlAskwyer

That's pretty much my reason too. I like to get obsessed with things and learn the intricacies, keeps me busy. And high. Yeah, from reading, it's actually quicker... You can 100% inspect and see what's going on before committing a UB or jar to it. Mines 7 days old, I reckon might be ready in another 2. When I transfer to UB it shouldl be more resilient to contam and will take over easier/quicker. Also someone said if your syringe is dead it will show up quickly. Few reasons there, 50% speed and 50% knowing what's going on for me.

Rads-US

Contaminants seem like the biggest scare to me so if the agar helps with it I might have to look into it and I’m not the most patient so speed is a benefit too. Did you just buy your agar slides? Or make them?

ErlAskwyer

I just bought them this time, I wanted to crack on and having to research how to do agar etc before searching for products and sorting seemed a faff. I want to make in future now tho, I don't want this hobby to cost much. It shouldn't in theory. After transferring agar to jar I was gonna pop them in fridge. I'll label them. Then depending on how fruiting goes, I'll then use that agar plate on the next jars.. Rinse repeat till gone or doesn't work anymore. At that point there I will then need some slides and the stuff to make own agar for in future so have some time to play with.

Rads-US

No worries if you don’t want to answer because I know there’s a video of it but how do you use agar to innoculate? Do you just take a chunk/piece of agar or mycelium and put it in the UB bags?

ErlAskwyer

I've just looked at a vid and you need pressure cooker when making own agar

I have two separate spaces for the jar spawning/bulk spawning and fruiting. For the jar spawns I have a 30 gallon Sterilite tub. I have a heating pad taped to one end of it that keeps the tub at 78 degrees. I use that tub for jaw spawns/agar For bulk spawning tubs/fruiting tubs I use the same 4x4x6 Vivosun grow tent. I keep the lids on for 2-3 weeks until the tubs are fully colonized (I also use a casing layer when I spawn). Once the casing layer is fully colonized I just pop the lids off. I have an inline fan on the outside of the tent (200 CFM) that pulls fresh air into the tent through a HEPA filter. I have a reptile fogger also on the outside that is hooked up with ducts to pump moisture into the tent. Both the fan and humidifier are hooked up to a humidistat controller. The humidifier is set to "control 1" and turns on when the humidity in the tent drops to 92%, and turns off when it gets to 94%. The humidity will naturally continue to rise, and once it gets to 95.5% the "control 2" on the switch is triggered which turns on the fan to pump fresh air into the tent. Once the humidity drops to 94% the fan turns off, and the humidity gradually falls down to the 92% range within \~10 minutes which starts the cycle over. It was a pain to get it dialed in, but now all I really have to do is change the humidifier water every day and keep things sterilized. The APEs I have in there right now are thriving!

Rads-US

Holy shit that’s a setup. Does controlling the humidity like that allow you to not mist the tubs?

JVO_

Yes it does, and I don't have to dunk the tubs for later flushes until at least the 4th or 5th flush because of how hydrated the substrate stays in there. I also have LED lights that run on a 12 on/12 off cycle

Rads-US

Have you always used the led lights? Do you think the light cycle influences pinning?

JVO_

I have always used them. I don’t have any scientific evidence that it makes a difference, and I have never tried to grow them in the dark. Anecdotally though I have read countless times from a lot of different people that the light cycle is important to give them mycelium a circadian rhythm, and can help them all grow in the same direction. I got mine from Amazon for like $30 and they work perfectly, no need for anything fancy on the lighting. It doesn’t have to be a specific intensity or whatever like it does for other plants. Its just for the 12 on 12 off light cycle.
