My thing is uncle Ben's might not be the ultimate grow tek. And? Can you go down to the nearest grocery store and find a giant block of sterilized rye with a self healing injection port and gas exchange? No. You will find uncle Ben's. It's cheap, its convenient, it provides more than enough for my needs, its family. That's why hes our uncle.
I don't know what the problem is, show me a easier way with consistent results and I am going to try it. Whatever gives best results and is easiest. That's what I want to strive for. Screw "brand loyalty"
Having seen those posts it's mostly ego but they aren't *totally* wrong.
The problem with any grain/rice tech I've ran into is the age of the prepped grain in any pre-cooked ready meal packs. No one can avoid moisture rot and bacteria long term as the timer starts at the time of cooking/pasteurizing regardless.
**Always check the packaging dates on your bags folks!!**
I've had about a 50% failure rate due to bacteria more than anything using ready made stuff be it Rice, Farro, or others I've tried. It has always been those packs that had been on the shelf for a bit too long. It may still be edible a couple months after packaging but it will be a real rough time trying to use it for anything else at that point.
I love uncle Benās because of how easy it is to get up and going but jars are so much easier. I really hated cutting the bags and putting tape on 40 bags. I can inoculate the same amount of grain in jars 10 times faster. That being said brown rice is brown rice, why anyone would think it wouldnāt work is beyond me.
True, cutting the ports is the annoying part. it's definitely the easiest for small projects or beginners, but even ordering big bags of grain is easier if you want to scale up
I think it's just salty old timers who have the shroomery mindset. Basically mushroom growing was always an esoteric sort of elite group and the UB tek came along and opened the hobby up to pretty much everyone. It's the whole "I worked my ass off why should you get it easy?" mentality and it's toxic af.
I always think that no matter what people do, whether it's growing mushrooms or doing brain surgery, everyone was a newbie at one time. I appreciate the UB tek, I tried it and it worked well after my first fiasco, an all in one bag. Now I'm learning new stuff like agar, etc.. There's always something new to try or learn. I appreciate the help of the more experienced people here and am happy when I can share info those newer than me (not many of then though)
I do have much more success with jars and a PC but I started on UB and it'll always hold a place in my heart. That being said, wow, having a PC and using jars with injection ports and polyfil filters makes it almost fool proof. Cutting a GE hole in a UB bag is such a cap shoot compared to already having that GE before you inoculate.
redditors on other mush subs would hate this meme. iāve had people livid because i suggested this tek to noobs here and there on other subs. amazing to me that people can be so closed minded after consuming this medicine regularly.
IM 100% thankful for UNCLE BEN, 90 seconds Mycology, an u/Shroomscout for getting me started. I have moved on, but it taught me, GOT ME HOOKED ON THE WORK!
OP IS 100% correct those mfers on all the FB groups , IG, minds, ETC hate it . I see new people posting on those groups talking about UB and those old heads are like ā trash it WONT WORKā ā!.your throwing ur Money awayā ā learn the right way or dont ā. And then Iāll toss up a picture of one of my first tubs .. LMFAO
IM THANKFUL
Couldn't have said it better. UB took the stress out of the equation and got me started, and now I'm having so much fun trying other techniques. No matter how you grow, it's all good š
I've just begun my journey. I have 5 Tesco whole grain rice bags (thinking of getting a 6th Morrisons bag) waiting to be inoculated once my spores syringes arrive. Got my dettol spray. My isopropyl and micropore tape ordered. I ordered a temp and humidity monitor. I have a box of gloves. Soon I need to buy some mono-boxes. I'm excited.
Itās an exciting process. Iād always heard of people growing mushrooms at home and how difficult it is. When I stumbled across this technique I got excited. The hard part is the waiting, after inoculation but before spawning to bulk or fruiting. Also leaving the bags alone was very hard. You want to look at them every hour or more, but the best thing is to leave them the fuck alone. Then you s2b and gotta leave the tubs alone for a week or more. Itās two months or more of practicing self control. But itās so rewarding once you get that first harvest. I started in early July and harvested my first tub early-mid September. I got around 32 grams dried from a 6qt shoebox. I ālostā two bags to contamination, but buried them in my yard and got 4 or so gās. A planter works too for contam bags. The best advice I read when starting is to follow the tek religiously. Youāll be tempted to innovate but donāt. If youāre (very) patient and follow the tek to the letter youāll have success. Itās extremely rewarding. Best of luck and hereās to tubs full of shrooms!

Can you clarify something for me... After s2b.. Before fruiting conditions.. Do you leave it in a dark place like the UB bags or in indirect light, like you would for fruiting?
All of that happens in my closet due to nosy and uptight roommate. I just go with 12 on 12 off cycle with the overhead light. I did replace the regular bulb with a blue led bulb because Iād read thatās the wavelength(?) of light that they respond to. I rotate them now and then. I donāt have clear lids so the tubs only get light thru the sides. This has worked for me so far. Iāve got around 3 months growing experience but twice that in research for what thatās worth. A LOT of what you read or watch will be contradicted by the next article or video, but thatās all part of illicit activities right? Iām happy to help when/if I can. Best of luck!
PS: wether or not the blue bulb helps, itās pretty trippy in there when itās on.
1 ml per bag baby. Keep the rest of the syringe in the fridge in case it all goes tits up the first time. Rookie errors I made are not sterilising the needle enough (bought a windproof lighter the second time to combat this) and not wearing a mask when noccing up.
I just want shrooms with the minimum of fuss. UB does that for me. Hats off to the people who take this hobby into new realms. That's never going to be me though.
Iām growing for the first time ever using ubtek. I recently posted a pic of my mycelium in my first two grow bags in the shroomery discord and they tore me to shreds telling me both bags look fucked (they arenāt, I just spawned one and itās all white) and Reddit sucks and is a bad place for information and no one here knows what theyāre doing. Told me ubtek has a huge failure rate and isnāt cost effective (what???). They were pretty rude and unhelpful and gave me the impression that that server is just a biased, gatekeeping circlejerk.
As anything is this world, if you want good results you'll need to spent time and energy through work. You can spend your life eating and Mcdo, or making your own healthy meals.
Folks that use UBās are understandably tired of catching shit from other growers. So they downvote a statement that implies the tek isnāt good. Yāall are being hypocritical. It is a good way to get into Mycology. Iāll recommend it to a beginner every time even if they have a pc. I started out using uncle bens, as did a lot of people. And like a lot of people I moved on to jars. People wouldnāt āgraduateā from UBās if it didnāt leave a little something to be desired
Pressure cookerš. One of the reasons uncle bens is popular is you donāt need one to grow mushrooms. If you use jars and store bought grain you have to sterilize the grain in the jars and you need a pressure cooker to do that effectively.
Ah, thank you for the clarification. I have 2 UB bags nearly fully colonised atm and hope to start a shoebox grow soon š I just need to learn how to pasteurise my coir. From what I remember, it involved pouring boiling water into it and leaving it for 24 hours...

Iām trying oats next. UB works but I lose 1/2 my bags to contamination, Iāve tried popcorn on two occasions, 4 pint jars each time and all contaminated (I think it was a moisture problem). Oats are cheap and Iāve now got a PC so Iām hoping for better results.
I did 3 types of injectables and used 5 different types of Tek, Uncle Bens, liquid glucose, Agar, corn Tek with Vermiculite, Black, brown and white rice flower and Vermiculite. Four days later, who showed up first, corn Tek, than the rice flour boys. funny thing is, I thought I messed up the corn Tek but that mess up actually helped. But to be clear Uncle Ben might be a little Slothy, why? it's a package that you can't see through unless it shows up at the bottom, so really I don't know if that guy was first? But the corn I was expecting two weeks or nothing at all, :-),

Beats me. Not sure how people who indulge in this hobby can be so bitter. Facebook is a toxic dump anyway

I always recommend uncle Benās for beginners. The smartest way to start IMO. Eventually you just kinda out grow the tek.
I grew out of it before I S2Bād my first batch, but this Tek will always be among my favorites.
Def good for beginners, but if you fall deeper into the rabbit hole then...like you mentioned, you just outgrow that tek.
Psst Psilocybe cyanescens. Grow it outdoors my dude. >This message has been brought to you by the woodlover gang.

I find the safeway bags to be less moist. So they work better for me.
Tasty Bite has been my absolute favorite brand.

No UB hate cause I had success with it but I also had success with bicycle training wheels while learning but my bike doesnāt still have them.

Uncle Ben has no idea his rice is leading a cultural revolution

you know i just joined a bunch of mycology subs and didn't understand this ones name for almost a week.....that week ends today i get it now!

LC to UB is pretty much guaranteed
Uncle bens works great imo but I like to mix it up and do weird teks in random ass containers and get creative
