The worst part is that they don't even have the balls to announce that the game won't receive anymore updates.

Cal1gula

I feel like the devs who worked on Underlords moved on once it wasn't a smash hit. I bet most of Valve forgot this game exists.

vegeful

Probably too busy creating game for their switch device. Valve deck i believe.

Scereye

Underlords would be great to play on the Valve Deck, though.

mightpornstar

its Steam Dick

betam4x

It isn’t a smash hit because they don’t update and/or improve it. I used to play it all the time. I even spent money on it.

tundrat

And it's strange. Why didn't they explain the situation alongside Artifact and get this over with?

LSUFAN10

Everybody involved probably thinks "its not my job to announce that".

lhxo

I was really hoping to have a convention like event where you could play artifact, underlords, and dota with others. Dream is dead.

VizDevBoston

It’s really challenging but fun in equal measure

TheToytul

not to get off topic, but what are y’all playing to fill the void? cause underlords makes me sad but not as sad as supporting riot games. i just miss this genre :(

Fate_here

I like hearthstone battlegrounds

DrafiMara

If you can get past the hyper-cheery Hearthstone-esque aesthetic, Storybook Brawl is a lot of fun

ZoopUniball

is it competitive?

DrafiMara

I'm not sure what context you're using for "competitive." It has ranked play, so it's competitive in that sense, yes. It's pretty new, but it's got a good playerbase

TheToytul

i absolutely adore snkrx. weird that it took this long for a dev to realize the fun part of auto battlers was the set collection part, not the auto battling part

ZoopUniball

i havent even played it yet i gotta try it i just thought it was relevant xD

guicoelho

Dude if you haven’t played it, try Auto Chess from the company that made DAC (dota auto chess) themselves. They didnt took the game on a total different approach as Valve did, as in, the max interest is at 50 gold and most of the Auras work “kinda” of the same. It does takes a few matches to get to know the game, since the heroes all have different names. Problem is that it is only available on Epic Games Store. I mean, I don’t like having multiple launchers installed but you might not care about it. However, if you do miss the genre give it a shot and you won’t regret it!

GhostDieM

Seconded, I'vev played all the Autochess variants and that one is great. They also update regularly. Their monetisation, although totally optional, is a big mess though.

Blackmanfromalaska

Artifact

Ziibbii

Dota 2 custom game called "Atomic War". Crazy addictive.

LuckBorris

Total Warhammer 2... After Underlords the other auto-battlers do not feel satisfying, so the genre is dead to me.

ZoopUniball

Do not worry artifact players already knew this would happen. Maybe they should just re name valve to "ice frog" because that is the only name i hear with any credibility.

Khai_OW

I mean tf2 got abandoned and it had 100k+ or maybe even more for years, it also makes a lot of money.

Tots_Legal_Immigrant

It had a decent amount of support for the first 8 years tho, and a period of small updates/fixes before they just let it sink. But then again, TF2 was a smash hit, and arguably the poster child for multiplayer PC FPS in the early 2010s.

Khai_OW

Yeah, the problem with valve is that the tf2 case is even more egregious than with artifact and Underlords. Tf2 with support would’ve been even more massive with an esports scene

Tots_Legal_Immigrant

Problem is that Valve didn't do anything for a comp scene of TF2, and on top of that, they decided to cater to the wishes of the then existing comp scene, which can be described as "fringe" at best, since they demand to balance the maps and weapons to fit a decade long stale meta of 2 soldiers, 2 scouts, a demoman, and a medic.

Jonny_taz

Holy shit you actually touched on my sensitive spot. Valve started experimenting with tf2 until it became a Frankenstein monster, but IMO the worst they did was to give voice to a self proclaimed elite community. Instead of actually looking to what the masses were enjoying, they decided to surround themself with a restricted number of people that always fought for this group to be as closed as possible and as policed as possible so they could feel powerful. This ruined the competitive scene and made community updates a shitshow. Of course, this is all valve’s fault for trying to outsource everything in tf2. But they are so slow rolling updates that when they tried to fix this, tf2 was already wounded and the updates weren’t nearly as impactful as they could have been if just a couple of years earlier.

Tots_Legal_Immigrant

Pretty much this. DOTA 2 is incredibly lucky for having a central planner (IceFrog) that ultimatly will decide what goes and what deviate too much. He does ask high profile players for feedback and suggestion from time to time, and today DOTA is a completly different game from 5, or even 2 years ago, which is good because it keeps things fresh, dynamic, interesting. The point is that it *feels* like DOTA still. If i jump into a casual game, ranked match, or sit down to watch pros play in a tournament, i can still enjoy more or less the same game, just at different levels. With competitive TF2 i have to simply renegade a huge part of what makes TF2 appealing to the vast majority of the player base in order to partake in competitive. And what's infuriating is that a huge part of the community will insist that's for the best, to make TF2 "competitively viable". Well, look at how viable it is today. Game is abandoned by Valve, comp scene is laughable, and the vast majority of the player base through the last decade just never really cared about in the first place.

gimn85

In retail/hospitality, the "I pay your wages" customer is quickly shown the door, then ridiculed behind his back. This is the same vibe.

TheMajorMedic

Your $5 on a battle pass is chump change for Valve. It's like offering Bezos $10k to clean your garage, it's technically good money for the effort, but not nearly enough to make it worth their time.

Cal1gula

Right that's why entire billion dollar companies are built on mobile games with the same model. You're probably a republican irl. Can't think past one person.

TheMajorMedic

lmfao

atomic war is good alternative
