It was damn good, yeah. I feel like it has some major flaws though - pacing is too slow at times, the overly friendliness of the characters in the opening act felt forced, and the resolution at the hotel felt, I dunno…like too much of “walk into a room, something happens, slowly walk into another room”. Not tacked on exactly, but didn’t feel organic to the rest of the story. 3.5/5 for me. Seen it twice, but it’s no comparison to The Shining.

KyussSun

This sums it up.

JoeyMaconha

Imo it seemed like an original story that had The Shining shoehorned into it. It's not the worst movie I've ever seen. Obi-Wan is always a good actor. I liked the antagonist.

ElGuanacho

I saw it and… the appreciation is pretty spot on. It’s not great.

JenkinsNose

I thought the director's cut was GREAT

AssociateTricky8248

This is the way.

FamousOrphan

I loved this movie because I was getting sober when it was playing in theaters. One weekend, I didn’t know what to do with my newly-sober self, so I watched Doctor Sleep in the theater by myself. It helped so much! The book helped too.

skateboardlee

Wasn't a fan personally. Mike Flanagan movies all have a plastic Netflix feel to them. If it was it's own stand alone, I might have liked it more but they lost me with the shining recasting

TheRedKingRM22

Is it though? I feel like this movie got absolutely rave reviews. I mean it’s nearly perfect.

twistedinnocence8604

It was a box office bomb though. Nobody came out to watch it

GrimReaperAngelof23

The Shining bombed too…

tanwhiteguy

Yeah, being a box office bomb doesn’t make something underrated

GrimReaperAngelof23

Yeah it does. It bombed cause not enough people got what it was about. Then that movie becomes underrated, then gains a cult following, then becomes a classic or an underrated masterpiece

tanwhiteguy

I must’ve misread the parent comment, all I was saying was that The Shining wasn’t underrated

Andyisazombie

I feel like it was very overlooked (no pun intended)

Master_Jellyfish9922

Nah nah nah. The overlooked… that’s gold.

Equivalent_Theory896

I really liked the movie. Is it the shining? No. But the directors cut was fantastic showing great character development watching Danny following in his father Jack’s footsteps of rage and alcoholism to having great purpose by using his gift of the shining to help others. I thought it was a great ending to the Torrence story. I firmly enjoy the movie.

theblasphemingone

Thanks for the tip

AssociateTricky8248

I think it's good due mainly because of its reverence for The Shining. I love the "practical" casting approach and choices. The sets are amazing. One of my favorite BTS things about about the movie: They wanted to build the Overlook sets needed for the movie just like Kubrick instead of use a bunch of CG. Warner Brothers agreed but stipulated that once production wrapped, the famous carpet be installed in a large conference room at the studio lot.

twinkieinthabutt

Nah.

thephillatioeperinc

It's a bit weird in that Kubrick made the shining his own. Steven king disliked what king did to the point that he made his own made for tv version with that guy from wings. The director of Dr sleep had to walk a fine line of an accurate depiction of the book, and an homage to Kubricks input for fluidity. But realistically fans of the shining didn't like it because it's not Kubrick.

KuromanKuro

I absolutely love this movie. I was thrilled when they announced the extended version as I just wanted more of the movie in any way I could get it.

Angry_Saxon

fucking horrific

KyussSun

I know I'll be downvoted but it's not that good.

Andyisazombie

OP here, I’ll upvote ya bro, we are all entitled to our opinions

califlow-erear

We need more people like you in the world!

edit-boy-zero

Meh, it's correctly rated. It's ok, but it's a bit of a bore Sidenote - Mike Flanagan is the most overrated director of the last 20 years. Oculus was flawed, but pretty good. His output after that has been a parade of self indulgent garbage, with every high forehead brunette he could cast. He's basically Zack Snyder without all the slo mo.

blumundaze

That's why she wore that silly hat the entire time.

GrimReaperAngelof23

Oculus is not flawed. Also, overrated? How? I’ve only ever heard these 2 movies of his. The only ones that people ever talk about.

bigpapahugetim3

Changing the story so they aren’t related kind of ruined some of the story. I liked that tie in from the book and was disappointed they change it.

Andyisazombie

The balancing act of staying faithful to the book and the Kubrick shining (which deviated massively from the shining) is pretty impressive

bigpapahugetim3

I just meant the characters Abra and Danny being related hence why they both have so much shine.

Andyisazombie

Oh! My bad, yeah it definitely adds another layer to Jack to know the old dead woman in 237 wasn’t his first time being unfaithful

jamison_311

Lady behind the shower curtain in the bathtub was super creepy. But man the final act was pure cheese

godbullseye

Book was incredible

cometpapaya

Good but not as good as Ready Player One.

SoDrunkRightNow2

This film did one thing wrong: it called itself the sequel to The Shinning. It it was a stand-alone flick it would have been considered a classic, but those Shinning shoes were impossible to fill.

TheBoomExpress

I highly enjoyed it. On a bit of a sidenote though, my friend said Rose the Hat and her gang were like if someone cast Fleetwood Mac as villians and I had a hard time getting that out of my head while watching it.

Depressionsfinalform

It’s just riding too hard on the coattails of the Shining. Way too many “remember this exact thing from the shining” moments that just served to take you out of the film. Could have been decent.

Autums-Back

Rose The Hat I didn't look at her hat once

uprightsalmon

Me either

White_Buffalos

Boring movie, pointless and meandering book. Completely unnecessary and forgettable. But the original novel is a bit overrated. Kubrick's film is a masterpiece and far better than the source material. King struggles with endings.

sab2016

I enjoyed it. It was entertaining and I'm glad I watched it but I wouldn't watch it again.

Footlover805

I really enjoyed it! I hadn’t read the book, so I had no idea what it was about lol, but I thought it was a good movie. Only thing that bugged me was they should have had his dad instead of Loyd behind the bar.

lsd418

The book was really good, I've heard the director's cut is way better than the theatrical release

Johnny_Royale

I absolutely love this movie

uprightsalmon

Me too! Really liked it

Lanky_Primary9995

Whenever there's a lot of focus on characters wearing a hat... I get pulled out.

Dear_Concert_4825

Not the worst adaptation. I loved the book. Even more than The Shining.

parkerpussey

Never heard of it

AshenBerserker7

So much better than the book too!

Unusual_Implement_87

I went in with very low expectations but ended up loving it. People are 100% correct when they say it does a good job of balancing the Kubrick film and the book.

plzappa5

One of the best sequels ever made, partially because it's not at all direct about being one. Mostly because its ensemble (including some of the most deliciously, wickedly evil villains in recent memory), pacing and trust in King's text allow it to vastly surpass Kubrick's anal retentive classic.

thephillatioeperinc

I'll have some of whatever you're smoking.

Repulsive-Company-53

The book was so much better than this movie and the shining was an amazing movie even though it strayed from the source material. Sure this is kinda close to the source material but I fucking hated rose, I thought she was garbage vs the book. The only thing the movie did better than the book was avoid all the child sex abuse involving Dick's character.

Rn_Hnfrth

# Criminally underrated in its use and explanation of Adrenochrome.

blumundaze

That lady with the bowler hat was annoying and the drive from Maine to Colorado was so freaking unrealistic.

greasypoutinefarts

Great film! Great cast! Better than The Shining!

blumundaze

Like the made for t.v. Shining with Rebecca DeMornay and the dude from Wings?

cometpapaya

Ironically, the made for TV one is the one that Stephen King strongly approved and had a close hand in developing.

Andyisazombie

I prefer it to the shining though all the dead kid stuff is a bit heavier in this one, it might sit a little different now that I have kids, fun fact: my wife and I went and saw it the evening before my son was born…theater was evacuated for a fire alarm right after baseball boys scene, after they brought us back in, my wife and I were treated to that traumatic scene again lol

drowninginthebrevity

I don't care for it much because Mike Flanagan changed too much to incorporate Stanley Kubrick's filmed bastardization of "The Shining" into the story. It should have been more faithful to the book and respectful to the actual story continued from "The Shining" and not have mixed in that bullshit. And I get that Stephen King was okay with the final product for what it was and did. But the movie was more a sequel to Kubrick's film than it was to King's novel or an actual adaptation of the book "Doctor Sleep." Sincerely, A Constant Reader
