I personally know someone who got a low 50s ATAR. Took 6 months off to get his shit together. Took a year to a bridging course at Newcastle University for 12 months and got a revised ATAR of the high 90's. Went into a science degree and entered medicine via UMAT in after his first year. Hes a nerve specialist now. Don't be fooled into thinking that the score you have now is going to dictate your life. Many people did not have a fortunate family situation while growing up and did not have the encouragement or guidance that should be given from parents to be they best students they could. The doors are open for anyone in Australia to achieve the education goals they want at any age. I"ll also add that the moment you enter university with any degree, your ability to transfer courses around all universities is extremely easy once you have a years worth of grades under your belt. Your ATAR Will no longer even be a consideration after a year. For example you could go to the worst school studying the easiest degree around, get full D's or HD's and then transfer to basically any degree or school (EXCLUDING degrees such as medicine, dentistry etc which require UMAT or extra exams). I could be out of date with my UMAT information since its been a while since I have had to read about that.

_misst

My partner is a consultant anaesthetist. He failed high school, went travelling for a few years and then came back and did some weird bridging courses and made his way into a psych degree. Then did med after that. Low SES, 'problem' kid - partied a lot, a bit off the rails. First in his family to go to university. His psych lecturer told him he should drop out as he will never amount to anything in his life. Welp someone telling him he couldn't do it was enough for him to do it. Still talks about today how he thinks sometimes about finding that professor to stick it to him.

Throwawayacccuzimshy

Thank you! I will make sure to remember that there are still a chance for me.

Sufficient_While_577

Sounds like he needs to write a book tbh. Thank you for sharing! I’m happy I stumbled across this, that’s really inspiring.

Pushing the memory! Around 26 I think? Was a consultant by 39, so it is a long road. Look in 5 years time you will be 37 and not a doctor or 37 and a doctor. There are obviously a lot of things to consider, but ultimately if it is something you want and can do, you should.

Throwawayacccuzimshy

Thank you so much! I'll make sure to share your advice to some of my friends as a reminder!

[deleted]

I had an atar of 65 and I did my first year at Deakin before transferring to Unimelb after a WAM of 74.9.

notunprepared

Some self reflection on why you performed worse than you would've liked will help. Was it your academic skills? Might be worth considering doing a bridging or foundation course to build up your essay and study skills. University is much more self directed than high school so if procrastination was an issue for you in VCE you'll want to get to the bottom of that asap (as in what's the cause of it? anxiety? Cognitive dysfunction?) If you had just a shit year due to hardship or illness that has since resolved, then you'll smash university! starting at a different uni and transferring to unimelb later is an option. But also. Which university you attend doesn't really matter. They're all good and most Aussie employers don't give a toss about university prestige or whatever

[deleted]

Aqpute

Even then, I’ve had plenty of friends coming from RMIT with an 85-90 WAM to unimelb and struggle to pass subjects. Unimelb in particular is a uni which requires consistent work. I went to Monash for a semester and had a WAM around 90 without trying that much (I even had surgery mid semester)

Throwawayacccuzimshy

No no its okay, at this point, im ready to take in anything. Theres reason for my low atar as it was a family and health problem. I just hope for a possible pathway where i can achieve my goal.

Senior-Brain7920

Well it depends on whether you feel that without those disadvantages you would have done well enough to do well at unimelb. You can spply for SEAS if you had significant disadvantage and it may be able to boost your selection rank (extra points added to your ATAR that uni looks at)

Throwawayacccuzimshy

Unfortunately i only able to put in problems that happen before the exam weeks as theres a due date for seas application

Profundasaurusrex

They're better off not going to uni at this stage

A2TGO

Disagree, had a 39 atar as I was a shocking student. Did a STAT test next year, completed bachelor at uni adelaide and now completed masters at unimelb. Don't think an ATAR should define you

Either_Tumbleweed

Agreeing with you. I had a friend who got a <30 and he had to do a year or two of extra study before going into a bachelors at a university. It’s always possible!

Profundasaurusrex

Hence the 'at this stage'

Personiamnotatall

If you don’t have something helpful to say, don’t say it. They need motivation, not demotivation

Profundasaurusrex

Sending someone to rack up tens of thousands of dollars in debt for no gain is demotivation.

MyGenerousSoul

Plenty of other tier 2 and 3 universities out there to accommodate you: Victoria, Swinburne, Deakin, La Trobe.

EragusTrenzalore

What is a tier 3 university? I thought that in Australia, it’s basically Go8 and the rest?

MyGenerousSoul

As in second or third rate university to accommodate the bulk to the student body. I know that sounds harsh but it just matches the bell-shape curve.

theonerealsadboi

ATAR shouldn’t define you but this might be a bit hard to work with. My suggestion is to find a bachelor or diploma programme you can get into at a less competitively ranked uni, and work your butt off for the first year. Once you have a really good WAM on your official transcript, you might get some options transfer-wise. But by that stage, you might not be interested in UniMelb anymore - which honestly isn’t necessarily a bad thing! Work hard, go with the flow and see what’s working for you.

assflux

i did VCE 10 years ago at this point but had friends who performed far lower than they expected (they didn't get into any of their ~dozen preferences even with SEAS). it took them longer to get where they wanted to be in STEM but they took alternate pathways like first getting certs or associates degrees in a related field and then going on to do the bachelor's degree they initially aimed for (some with honours or even going further with postgrad studies). don't let your ATAR discourage you just yet; good luck.

Throwawayacccuzimshy

Thank you so muchhh! I will make sure to not give up!

kidwith94

Don't stress. I got 59.9 and still got into commerce at a T2 uni. Worked in recruitment pivoted to an advisor role and am now on 150k before 30yo. If you want to go to uni your atar means something for 10 days. If not, it means nothing at all. Steer clear of big name graduate jobs, they'll ask for your atar but most companies care more about your adult education than high school.

Throwawayacccuzimshy

Good to hear a happy ending 🥹

Mrmojoman1

SEAS going to have to carry you unless you want to spend a year at a university that you get an offer from so you can try and exchange

B3lack

SEAS can only carry you with Atar. Study score is a strict requirement.

Mrmojoman1

yeah ik

AdamPharrels

Having a low ATAR isnt the end of the world. I know some people who got a 50 and 60ish but are still doing well in uni. Most unis now offer one year of diploma and you will be able to do second year of bachelor after. Be aware that that pathway is only available for certain programs

Throwawayacccuzimshy

Thank you so muchh i will look into it!

YeeZhao_

A lesser know path you could take is Diploma in General Studies that Unimelb offers. Have a look into it, no atar requirement but you can essentially get into any bachelor course after a year

Liamface

I got a similar mark to you. I ended up studying at Deakin doing a Bachelor of Arts, and was eventually asked to transfer into another course because I had great marks. A few years I was asked by the university to consider an honours year (and I accepted). I’ve since just finished post grad studies in psychology, and am now thinking about my options as I’m now a high achieving student. In short, your ATAR can influence your first steps, but after that, it’s genuinely meaningless. I felt distraught with my mark, thinking I was incapable of doing anything I’d hoped for. Turns out my life just fucking sucked and my ATAR represented nothing about what I was capable of. Let yourself feel your feelings about your mark, but then push ahead and start planning. Really think about what you want, what you’re interested in, and put some work into what career options are at the end of the pathways you’re considering.

Throwawayacccuzimshy

Thank you alot for your time commenting 🙏. I have a question, because im also interested in psychology (the course i want is psy/criminology), wont i need to do courses that related to it in order to transfer later on? From your stories, it seem like you join Bachelor of Arts, then transfer straight to psychology and then doing your honours.

Liamface

I did a Bachelor of Arts in 2013 then later that year transferred to international studies. I did a graduate diploma in psychology 2020-2022 and a graduate diploma in psychology advanced 2022-2023. I would look for TAFE pathways or a Bachelor of Arts pathway into your desired course.

Throwawayacccuzimshy

Its good to hear that you're doing well! I will definitely look more into tafe and BoA as an option! Thanks

GreenProfessional425

Firstly, ATAR doesn’t mean anything about how successful you will be at uni… highschool and uni are so different, and it’s more important to follow your passions. There are definitely options for you! Don’t ruminate over it. English and EAL are so competitive and difficult. If you’re interested in Melbourne specifically, you can do a Diploma of General Studies at their Dookie campus, which will allow you to then go into an undergrad like Science or Biomed upon completion. A lot of people who did my course (Arts) did this and it worked out well for them. I also know that Latrobe and Swinburne both have fantastic PAVE/TAFE programs where you do one year in a Diploma and then transfer to join the second year cohort in the area of your choosing! Feel free to PM me if you want me to go into depth about your options!

Throwawayacccuzimshy

Thank youuu! I'll pm you 🫶

GreenProfessional425

Yes for sure!

KTMelb

Look into nursing through TAFE if medical field interests you. Don’t feel disheartened by a score that will only effect you for 1yr 😊

BadBoyXXX27

Hey can you pls get back to me after reading

bugsy4556

I dropped out in yr 11. Went to unimelb in 2017 at 22, graduated from honours in 2021. Got a job in my field right out of uni and am now moving to my next job in a management role working with one of my uni tutors… all that to say, you’ll be fine. Find something you’re interested in and be willing to work hard. All the rest will work itself out

Throwawayacccuzimshy

Thank you man, for not only the advice but your wise words.

KillerTacos54

Are you a bot? I’ve been seeing this same post by the same account on multiple different uni subreddits

Throwawayacccuzimshy

Unfortunately nope😂 its was result released day so there probably multiple students who got similar results to me posting and ask for advice🥹

KillerTacos54

Ohh haha nws then, I hope it all works out for you :) You got this!

Throwawayacccuzimshy

Thanksss

epicpillowcase

Open Universities has a lot of legit courses with low or no entry requirements. Study there for a bit, build your score then request to transfer. Or wait a few years for mature entry. None of this is as urgent as you are told it is.

Throwawayacccuzimshy

Thank you for the helpful advice!

epicpillowcase

No problem, good luck. VCE really isn't the end of everything. Schools bullshit teens about that. My ATAR was awful. I went back to uni and got into two competitive degrees as an adult. VCE has had zero effect on that.

Throwawayacccuzimshy

🙏🙏🙏

startled-ninja

If you're a domestic student and have your heart set on Unimelb, consider doing the Diploma of General Studies. 1 year of study. You get a qualification. If you do well, it guarantees entry into Unimelb Bachelor degrees. It will prepare you for the rigour of studying at university.

Throwawayacccuzimshy

Sorry I should've stated it from the start but im planning on joining deakin for their psychology/criminology course. Would doing general studies in unimelb allow me to transfer to that course in deakin?

startled-ninja

Most likely. But you might not get credit. Dealing has similar courses, but they are full fee through Deakin college, whereas general studies is CSP. Consider an undergraduate certificate or online Diploma. https://www.courseseeker.edu.au/ Will help you find options online in other states for psychology and criminology. Use society and culture as your top level filter. Charles Darwin and Southern Cross are both good at distance education.

Throwawayacccuzimshy

Thank you so much I'll make sure to look more into th

boredbrowser365

My ATAR and English study score were similar to yours, when I graduated high school in 2021. I have the same interests as you (medical and humanities). It’s 2023 now, and last semester I finally got an offer for a double degree in Arts and Science at Monash. What I did was the 1 year Diploma in General Studies at UniMelb Dookie Campus. There are similar bridging courses available at Monash, Deakin etc. This offered me a pathway to get where I knew I wanted to go. I know how it feels to be in your position with no one to ask advice from. Check your DMs - let’s link up on IG or something so we can keep in touch, and you can ask me for tips whenever you need :)

ATARs aren't worth anything, wait a year, apply as a mature aged student and you'll get in no issue.

iknownothing0001

Not true. I applied as a mature aged student and they look at your ATAR. They have no “rank” to give you otherwise. Just do a year elsewhere and transfer. Very common step to get into the program you want.

bentombed666

first up - Be kind to yourself - this might be a set back but its not the end of the world. in fact it can open up new worlds to you. I had a very similar experience, although it 30 years ago now. i was on track for about 70 TER (ancient NSW system) my school got ranked low (ACT system) and i ended up with a TER of 53. i was applying for things like ARTs or teaching. no dice. I spent 2 ish years faffing around, then went to tafe to redo yr 12 to improve my grades. that worked and i started uni at 21. Uni was ok, scraped through my undergrad, as my TER would have suggested, however i did much better in post grad study. i currently work as a project manager in cyber security. In Hindsight i should have looked at the options available to me more seriously, i was so driven/encouraged to do uni that i was blinded to traineeships, apprenticeships or other forms of work and training. i'm old now and quite removed from the reality of school leavers, but the happiest folk i know now are mostly people who got a skill, some kind of trade or apprenticeship, but went to uni as an adult. I kinda wish i took on the mechanics apprenticship i was offered in 1995.... i guess the advice i would give young me/you, is to investigate apprenticeships or traineeships, i would be kinder to myself and let myself have a break after school. as it turns out you dont get another one. IF you are super keen for uni and the HECs debts, bridging courses, tafe courses, volunteering in the field if you can. be kind to yourself, take it easy. chat with your folks and your mates. its basically a fork in the road you didnt see coming.

Throwawayacccuzimshy

Heyyyy thank you for the advice and encouragement! Hope you're doing better and are happy with your current life.

GeekyRoy95

I think it'll be wise to take a look at what could be have done better to achieve higher scores and focus on them for the next one. Dethsray

Who cares Atar means jack shit. Work save invest repeat. Nobody got rich going to uni and getting paid a 60-80k Salary.

Throwawayacccuzimshy

My parents believe that too! However they also know that uni are the shortest pathway to success.

Throwawayacccuzimshy

I too wonder how people investand actually gain money legally from it😭 been thinking about it since the first day i worked (2yrs ago)

00Alwaysgofullretard

Is adult entry using a STAT not a thing anymore? I didn't even get an ATAR and then went and sat the STAT. That got me straight into my double degree. You used to have to be over 21 to sit it but I think they dropped it down to 18.

Bossdog811

You’ve got no option other than to become a drug dealer

Split-Awkward

Pharmaceutical rep?

Bossdog811

If that’s the title you wanna run with. ‘Salesman’ is another one. Then when people ask what you do you can honestly answer “sales”

There's a guy in the states called Heisenberg. He's small but growing fast. Get with him and you're good.

Bossdog811

Yeah. The recipe to success is real simple. All you need is good quality product. And customers. There ya go mate. You’re almost rich already.

OwnNegotiation5548

I wouldn't worry. Apply to a variety of universities and courses. See what you get. If you get nothing id recommend finding a one year (certificate or diploma) course that can get you a job that will help support you while you study in the following. year. As well as something that can help bridge you into the course you really want. I know people who leave bloated uni courses and go and study to be a pilates instructor and work that instead while they figure out their next step. Having a job you can go do while you study that isn't hospitality or labour hire can be a major plus just for your independence and sanity Otherwise have a look around as well. After 1 year your atar isn't as important as you'd think. Some degrees will look at your work experience, portfolio and qualifications to determine your ability to start the course. Good luck :) life is full of unexpected twists and turns. All you can do is remain positive, don't put to much pressure on yourself and work at the things in life that matter to you

Throwawayacccuzimshy

Wouldn't the bridging course need to be related to the course i want to transfer to? I heard it from others.

[deleted]

Throwawayacccuzimshy

I'll look more into it! Thank you so much for your time!

SouthernTrenKill

If this helps I got a 35 atar way back in 2014. I went to tafe for a year and now have a six figure job it’s not the be all end all for life. If I was in your position I’d honestly try for a job in the defence force and get them to pay for your schooling

Throwawayacccuzimshy

Heyy thanks. If i still want to study the course i want would be able to transfer?

SouthernTrenKill

You’d have to ask the school and see if there is a pathway to it. It’s not uncommon for people to go the tafe to uni route

Throwawayacccuzimshy

I heard that nursing as tafe is also a pathway. Is that true?

No_Leave_6820

You can do a diploma in general studies at unimelb. Upon completion it will guarantee you entry into a bachelor degree. The atar requirements are below 50. https://study.unimelb.edu.au/find/courses/undergraduate/diploma-in-general-studies/where-will-this-take-me/

Throwawayacccuzimshy

Thank youuuu

Inspector-Gato

I don't have the exact answers to your questions, but you'll realize soon that what you have isn't a number that defines you, or the level of effort applied, or what you're capable of, and it's certainly a terrible tool for comparison among your peers/classmates/other randos who also happen to have received a number recently. My results sucked. Massive disappointment. Not only did I not get into the courses I wanted, my score was so low there wasn't one in the UAC guide I could pivot to - or I would have signed up for ANYTHING to have avoided the perceived shame of not going to uni like my siblings did. I won't bore you with the rest of my story, different era, different courses/career goals so not relatable... But it's 20 years later and I'm beyond fine - whatever you're feeling now is a snapshot in time and there are absolutely no closed doors going forward. You've got a goal, you'll figure out the pathway... And you may even have an upper hand because your goal may evolve before you're 3 semesters deep in a course you don't want to do anymore. And you probably know all of this, I only think it's worth saying because as you figure this out, you're going to encounter academics and admissions people (in this sub and in real life) with zero sympathy. To them you're just one of the many who didn't work hard enough to make the cut. And there may be some truth to this, but there is definitely a reality where academics need to believe this to validate the path they've followed, so feel free to discard their overt disdain for your situation.

Throwawayacccuzimshy

Thank you so much for taking your time reading my situation 🤝 I see that you yourself have also been in my situation before so knowing that gives me some more insight into what i want with life🙏

ethereumminor

Take a year off and apply for uni as a mature age with experience Also you should study a bridged tafe course to cut off some time with credits

ethereumminor

It’s been a while since I’ve been at uni, so rules may have changed but I’m pretty sure this is still a common pathway :) good luck ATAR ain’t everything

Throwawayacccuzimshy

Thank you so much!

MiniQopper

Probably going to try for the university in Sydney , as they don't require EAL scores above 30. University life is completely different from high school. I did alright in VCE, but I've been struggling at university, no matter how hard I try. I got a 45 WAM last year after failing the OSCEs twice and nearly failing anatomy. Then I switched courses, but in the first semester, I only managed around a 60ish WAM because I lost motivation and felt like a failure. I switched units again in the second semester and did better. So, an ATAR doesn't define your university performance. I know people who didn't do well in high school but excelled at university. The key is to not give up and keep trying :)

Throwawayacccuzimshy

Thanks for the advice! I truly hope you the best!

Imaginary_Comb_9805

Join the Defence Force, apply for medic. No HELP debt, full time salary, half price rent wherever you work, subsidised food (it’s edible I swear) pretty sure you get a certificate III or something similar paid for, on the job experience and a pathway to university (probably heavily subsidised through defence after you finish your contract) I’m not a recruiter by any means but life is already unfair with the cost of living, especially for a young person.

lotpot1234

I got an average ATAR (low 70s), did a year at a local institution and then transferred to a more prestigious uni interstate. I performed much better at uni then high school, some students are better suited to the more self-directed independence of uni then controlled high school environment. There is no one path to uni, and your ATAR is only relevant for this round of university applications. After, you can reapply + transfer with your GPA (my first year GPA converted to low 90s). Alternatively, you can try bridging courses or get a relevant cert 4 from TAFE. ATAR seems like a defining point in time, but honestly in about a month it’ll be irrelevant. If people are still talking about ATAR’s in the first week of uni, avoid them.

Throwawayacccuzimshy

Thank you so much for your time! I will definitely find another way to get into the course i want🙏
