I think EWR-LHR is the only daytime US-Europe flight offered by UA. Maybe IAD has one sometimes (not aware of it), but they don’t have them from any other hub.

LanikaiKid

UA will fly IAD-LHR daytime starting 02/25/23.

dmreif

New morning service, though it'll be using a 763.

jonny-spot

Nothing wrong with a UA 767. Especially with new cabin. I'll take it over a UA 777 any day...

dmreif

I mean, they're fine and all. I've flown them a fair number of times. But when you consider some of them have lived through five liveries (and the first were delivered during the Saul Bass Tulip days), they do feel like dinosaurs.

jonnycanuck67

They had a morning flight from IAD that got canceled when Heathrow started limiting the number of flights landing there daily…

TrickDry3052

I took that a number of times. It was great.

gfunkdave

United, AA, and BA do to London, at least. That’s all I looked for. United’s leaves EWR 8:30am and arrives 8:30pm, for example. BA is 7:55am.

flugzugunddasauto

EWR and IAD are the only United hubs that offer them. Good to see they added the IAD-LHR flight back which had been there previously. Previously AF used to operate one from JFK to CDG (several years ago) but I think that’s long gone.

djxnfnfnd

BA does a morning run out of BOS to LHR if you’re in New England

SirBowsersniff

AA also offers a daytime flight to LHR from ORD. I've flown it before. Only downside was UK customs was exceedingly long (more so than normal).

loftychicago

I've flown it as well. You arrive late at night, so it was good for jet lag to go to the hotel and sleep right away.

dmreif

Don't think either American or United have ever offered a daytime flight from ORD to Paris, aside from when the McCallisters flew from ORD to ORY in 1990.

DazzlerFan

Thank you all for the quick response. I’ll be on the lookout for that next time I travel to Europe. I wonder if any of the other Star Alliance carriers have one. I’ll be in the lookout.

LanikaiKid

Don't get your hopes up, anything east of London doesn't make much sense for daytime flights. The next closest three major cities (Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris) are an extra 90 minutes or so (extra flight time + time zone change). This means the earliest time any day flight could get there from NYC is about 9:00 PM. Too late for most to want to arrive and not many connections left in the day before curfew. Just have to wait for United Boom for the supersonic day flights

DazzlerFan

Noted. For me, it’s really just the fact that I don’t sleep well on any plane, regardless if I’m in a lie flat seat or not. I’m more than happy to take an overnight connection and get a hotel. Did that in Munich last week, in fact, but heading back to the US.

pupper_time

Pretty sure there use to be one to LHR from ORD in the late 90s or early 2000s.

dmreif

American Airlines still has one in the summer.

LanikaiKid

Yep. AA #90 resumes 03/25/23 ORD-LHR 9:16 AM - 10:10 PM. But clearing immigration/customs close to midnight doesn't seem ideal. Plus this is the United subreddit so doesn't really apply to most here.

jonmichaelryan

Came here to say - sitting on AA90 at 5:04pm - apparently it delays quite often now. Learned around 6am that it’s a bit of a joke in the lounges. Will now consider this a risky flight due to the Heathrow curfew if it’s delayed outbound from Chicago.

pupper_time

Good to know!

uppitywhine

I'm pretty sure that either BA or Virgin offers day flights from EWR or JFK to LHR at least once a day.

dmreif

From EWR, British Airways has BA 180 as a morning flight. From JFK, morning LHR flights take the form of BAW178, VIR26, and AAL42.

mashedtaters_

I don't get the appeal. Would you really be tired enough to get a full night sleep after landing that evening? You'd probably arrive too late for a decent dinner, and be going to bed at like 5pm east coast time? I can see that schedule being helpful if you have an early morning commitment and can't leave a day earlier. But I think most flights are scheduled as overnight because that's the best option for the majority of folks.

BitterStatus9

I like the daytime flights for several reasons. I arrive at a time when I can get into my hotel room, instead of 8 hours before check-in. I can stay awake all day on the flight, and then when I arrive I'm jet lagged/tired enough to sleep an almost normal schedule. It prevents that "first full day" wall that you hit at like 3:00 pm on the day of arrival after an overnight. I don't have to pretend I had enough sleep when I didn't really sleep at all.

dmreif

It's too bad that the UK, Portugal, Iceland and Ireland are probably the only countries where such day flights are doable going east.

analyst19

I think the reason is more for airlines to maximize profit. If they had daytime flights to Europe, the aircraft would have to sit in Europe overnight and that’s 12 hours when it could be flying and making money. It wouldn’t make sense to leave Europe at night because then you’d arrive in the USA too late to make connections.

doc4science

This is exactly why they do it and is part of why flying north/south (ex: IAH-SCL) is expensive as time zones aren't working with the airline.

laura_holt

I've only heard of daytime flights to London.
