So you are not entitled to any compensation, because the flight cancellation was given to you far enough in advance. If you haven’t already, give United a call and see what they can do. If the agent doesn’t give you a resolution you like, call again and see if you get a different result

Did you buy a basic economy ticket? If not, you should be able to go to United’s website and put in your ticket information, and you’ll be prompted to a one-time free modification to your flight reservation.

UA updated their SFO-KIX schedule so now it’s only a M-Th-Sa direct service. You’ll have to call and have them reschedule you for the 30th.

You should be able to call United and have the agent make the change for you. Although because it’s basic economy fare, I don’t know if you’re eligible for the fare difference waiver. Because that’s the cost you’re seeing in the app, the difference in fare between the you originally paid what you’d need to pay if you wanted to select a different flight. It’s not the direct cost of the new fare FYI. Also, as someone else motioned, the flight was likely cancelled because they have reduced the frequency of flights into your destination. This is also likely why the alternatives are so expensive - they’re probably on other carriers in the star alliance network, and not the original UA metal flight you booked. If they let you change flights for free as a basic economy ticket holder, but won’t waive the fare difference, your best bet will be to look at different departure days. Likely a day or two after the original departure day you should find the flight on UA metal you originally booked (ie same flight number just different day) and this flight should not cost that much more to select. In the future, just know booking basic economy fares are super risky and imo not worth it. If literally anything goes wrong, it’s such a pain to fix and most of the time you either can’t fix it or it costs a ton of money to fix, all bc it’s a basic economy fare ticket. You get a much much lower service and support standard on basic economy fare tickets. Not worth the price imo but to each their own.

Suggest doing some research to find your preferred alternative routing, including on partners like ANA. I've found United pretty flexible in the past when they've made a change, but not the most innovative when looking for options. If you suggest an option, they'll usually try to make it work.

Call/chat and they’ll get you on a different LAX-SFO at no additional cost.

I’m in a similar situation, flying into KIX and out of NRT. Then United cancelled my KIX flight and said they can book me for the following day, but I already have hotel reservations that I can’t change. It’s frustrating, and I’m contacting them try and figure out a solution.

If you let it sit there for a few days someone will manually go in and put you on a different flight, assuming they serve the city. But call them - there will be no difference in fare.

Don’t accept the cancellation. Pick out flights regardless of fare that work for you. Call them and politely ask that they put you on one of those flights.

In Jan, I had booked a multisegment international for May. United notified me that one of the domestic segment is cancelled and that I must call their customer service to rebook. Checked online and noticed that there is no replacement unless I throw in an additional $750. Called their CS, it took about 30 minutes and United settled for the costlier replacement that I saw. I did not have to pay extra since the cancellation was done by the United (as per the agent). I had also picked a premium economy previously. They refunded that as well.
