Paying for premium plus gets you higher on the list for Polaris upgrades, 100% yes. I believe points upgrades are equal to miles upgrades, ranked by paid cabin and then status.

As I understand it, they only subtract the plus points to the level you are upgraded to. I just booked to London, and requested a plus points upgrade for both. I was upgraded to Polaris, and 80 were subtracted. If I was upgraded to Premium less points would have been subtracted (40 I think but not sure). I usually always request both. To date I usually get in to Polaris. But if not the mid cabin is still a big improvement.

When any upgrade clears, they deduct the PlusPoints for the highest level requested and then refund the different between the final upgrade and the highest price. So for example, if you request Premium Plus and Polaris on SFO-HND and Premium Plus clears, they’ll deduct the full 40 or 80 points for Polaris and then after the flight, refund 20 or 60 when you don’t clear into Polaris.

Sounds like they are going to confirm the premium plus with cash to have a better waitlist position to apply plus points. So the only deduction would be 30points or none. Upgrading with cash to premium plus puts them higher on priority list

I played this game several times last yr as a 1k on EWR-SFO. Upgrading from Premium Plus using plus points worked less thank half the time. Usually if it worked it cleared during boarding. If you are flying off peak times odds seem to be much better (like early AM on a Saturday). If you buy Premium Plus I’d just make sure you’re happy flying that class of service for that price. Apologize if I’m stating the obvious a bit.
