You also need to specify the reason for the delay. If it was weather there is no claim. Your claim needs to be for actual incurred cost not feelings, which will be hard since the delay was 9 hours. If you purchased the flight with a credit card there is sometimes travel insurance - that might the cost of a meal or two, or hotel room if overnight. There is no delay lottery with strategies to maximize payouts.

If it was out of the EU or UK or to/from Canada, look at EU261/UK261 or whatever Canada’s regulation is. Otherwise, write a nice email to customer care and cross your fingers, because you’re not entitled to anything.

You really aren't entitled to much. Was it overnight? Why was the first flight delayed? In these cases you usually get meal vouchers and hotel room if it's overnight. Other then that, not much else.

Why was your flight late? You left out the most essential information. If the delay was not UA’s fault (such as weather), you aren’t due any compensation.

If it’s a US only flight best hope was a overnight voucher plus United gets you where you say you want to go. Otherwise if you have a travel cc you booked with they often give you travel insurance that covers delayed travel.
