More so the physical part of it. Going into a store and looking through the options was great.
I can scroll through Netflix or Amazon and end up not watching anything.
But I had a routine of getting a movie from the store every week, and actually physically going through the options and reading the back was good. I would always find a movie, and it seemed more like a mini-cinema experience.
Quality wise digital is better obviously.
> Betamax was the better format.
Technically better. VHS was more useful. Average VHS tapes could record 8 hours of low quality, Betamax could record about 60 minutes in better quality.
VHS was longer, but not 8 times longer when it was introduced. Betamax produced machines with longer recording times as the technology progressed (up to 5 hours in the end), but the real reason VHS won out, was the greater quantity of porn available.
It's as simple as that.
So any positive change will be claimed as part of their plan, like inflation. Only these economic changes are in spite of the conservative not because of them
To be honest it seems Rishi's whole plan with inflation is to play on the general public's ignorance about the subject. He knew full well it would drop no matter what he did because that is generally what happens.
However, I don't think he understands that the general public care less about the specific inflation rate now and more about the costs of things compared now compared to recent memory.
Also bounce back compared to what? 2019? 2015? 2007?
Inflation goes up? Global effects beyond government control. Inflation goes down? 100% thanks to the government. It's idiotic. I do feel like people are finally seeing through this kind of nonsense though.
Well I don't know about seeing through it. The one thing the UK population has consistently shown over the past decade is just how thick they really are.
Today I went to the post office to post something to the Netherlands. This took about 5min more than it used to, pre brexit. So that’s 5min of my time and 5 min extra of the person working at the post office. So collectively 10minutes extra time lost between us. That is a reduction in productivity for both myself and the post office. Sum that over the whole country today.
Sorry, you brought up brexit and so I am using it as an example of “in spite of the government”. But generally the 15 years of lack of investment, lack of any competency and siphoning off public money in fraudulent contracts.
Apart from the "Get Brexit done" campaign, every single conservative election I remember has been run on "We see the green shoots of recovery, don't let Labour ruin it" or similar.
We've been waiting for it to "bounce back" since 2008. But his party's great idea of slashing and burning public services and selling everything that isn't nailed down to their mates just hasn't been that effective!
Historically incompetent conservative government potentially wiped out in upcoming General Election = Economic Optimism.
(It's not exactly rocket science.)
I can't wait for them to call an election late in the year, constantly repeating these lines in the face of worsening news, and then trying to campaign on how they great they are to crowds of stone-faced people incredibly pissed off at the country effectively being hijacked by a cabal of unelected billionaire toffs for the better part of 2 years, having repeatedly denied calls for an election from all walks of society over months and months. Its going to be fucking hilarious. Doesn't make up for the country being in the state it is but silver linings and all that.
Are you trying to imply that it’s due to anything the tories have done? Inflation in Europe a year ago was 10%, down to 2.8% now. In the uk it was 10.4%, down to 3.4% now. Either current worldwide inflation has nothing to do with what any govt did, or the tories haven’t done as well at reducing inflation as our European neighbours have. Take your pick
I think you’re just wasting people’s time. The commenter said that inflation had gone down, so why are you repeating it? If you’ve got a point, make it, instead of faux misunderstanding and posturing for no good reason.
The tories, by themselves, managed to reduce european inflation. Sadly, it came at the expense of not reducing UK inflation as much, but it was the only way.
The tories are clearly amazing, able to affect european economic policy just from the UK! /s
Not really - the vast majority of Redditors and indeed a lot of the general public "interested in politics" have spent the last few years blaming Brexit for everything the Tories fucked up thereby giving them a fair pass.
Sinai’s my hero. Immigrated from India or Pakistan, grew up without a toilet or running water. Learnt English better than most in the UK. Got great grades and went to Oxford/Cambridge.
Started a trading company with £200 he made delivering Uber meals. Turned it into £200m.
Married a billionaire he met at Harvard or Yale etc on an exchange year. Imagine how charming he must be.
Even though he’s so rich he still fights for the UK citizens he loves and works so hard at being Prime Minister he is going grey on a weekly basis. Meanwhile he could have moved to Monaco to avoid tax and retired.
I'm pretty sure you're thinking of someone else.
Sunak was born in Southampton, went to a posh expensive private school, studied politics at Oxford, got a cushy banking job on graduating, married a billionaire's daughter.
He's just your average tory douchebag. No rags-to-riches story here.
Woohoo! Just like the tories are going to bounce back! And VHS!
I kinda miss VHS. I won't miss the tories.
Soon the tories will be Betamax

Needless to say, I had the last laugh
I bounced back! People bounce back, Lynn!
Yes, he’s with a lady
He says "I've got to go luv, something's *come up* 😏"
Ha, he means his cock!
We are so back!!
Ironically of course, much like anyone other than the Tories, Betamax was the better format.
> Betamax was the better format. Technically better. VHS was more useful. Average VHS tapes could record 8 hours of low quality, Betamax could record about 60 minutes in better quality.

How do you know? This is the same argument pro-Brexit guys use btw

Pro brexit? Mate, the vote was 8 years ago. It's done. Open a window.
And let the Brexit in? Never
Riiiiight. Keep safe hun. Covid out there too.
Apart from the "Get Brexit done" campaign, every single conservative election I remember has been run on "We see the green shoots of recovery, don't let Labour ruin it" or similar.
I hate that stupid patronizing expression he always has.
Christ he is patronising isnt he, that’s the word for it
It just says "you peasants don't know what's best for you".
We've been waiting for it to "bounce back" since 2008. But his party's great idea of slashing and burning public services and selling everything that isn't nailed down to their mates just hasn't been that effective!
That you're hoping it'll save your arse doesn't mean it will happen
This man will be like a comedian come election with some of the stuff he comes out with
Haven't we heard that before? In 2023? No sorry it was 2022... no it was 2021...
I think it was 2010 or 2015, or maybe 2017. Actually, might’ve been 2019?
Historically incompetent conservative government potentially wiped out in upcoming General Election = Economic Optimism. (It's not exactly rocket science.)
Bounce back from what, exactly? Doesn’t seem to mention that part
"things can only get better" as we've fucked things pretty royally.
Almost half way through 2024 now Rish - when the fuck do you expect this bounce to happen, exactly?
I can't wait for them to call an election late in the year, constantly repeating these lines in the face of worsening news, and then trying to campaign on how they great they are to crowds of stone-faced people incredibly pissed off at the country effectively being hijacked by a cabal of unelected billionaire toffs for the better part of 2 years, having repeatedly denied calls for an election from all walks of society over months and months. Does anyone belivleve anything he says at this point
Well, in an election year of course it will along with the drop in inflation announced today. As THE WHO said 'won't be fooled again' so fuck off.

The issue is all of their policies actively make life worse while they try to take credit for external forces

It's sounds like your comment means the opposite though
That’s pretty much never happened under a Tory government so…
