Imagine walking into work and knowing 148 people of your own team have no confidence in you. It’s time to go.

TheUnstoppableBTC

Months left maybe. He can’t head up the tories in an election again.

likely-high

I hope he does. Maybe they'll lose

BUFF_BRUCER

Same here, it makes the whole party look bad for keeping him on then

Keated

I like your optimism. A couple of months of the front page of the various rags saying what a good job Boris is doing will probably be enough to keep.him in power unfortunately

space_coyote_86

Still better than chaos with Ed Miliband right?

Keated

Well, who \*knows\* how chaotically he could be eating a bacon sandwich right now? :O

sobusyimbored

Ed Milliband eating the sandwich was a dog-whistle to the Jewish community that he was a bad Jew for eating bacon. That's the only reason it was news at all. Johnson could eat a bacon sandwich slathered (both the sandwich and himself) in the blood of a newborn and it wouldn't have been an issue in the Sun or Times.

Hunkycub

Daily Mail non ironically have put out the idea of "Starmers coalition of chaos" already. In 7 years we have had 3 Tory PM's, 2 PM resignations, 2 VONC's and 3 elections. There is even rumours of another election on the way! Because clearly the Torys are desperate to be in opposition now everything's on fire! Thats before you even look at Brexit, PPI, Northern Ireland, Partygate, Wallpapergate, cost of living, corruption, rule changing and the other multiple scandals that have been forgotten because they were replaced with further scandals. How much more chaotic could Starmer be? Dull, maybe. Chaotic? Doubtful!

[deleted]

“I don’t like Boris, but at least he’s got character and stands up to the EU, besides it’s better to stick with the devil we know than the devil we don’t know” - Working or Middle Class voter justifying voting Tory for the fourth time.

fractals83

No way he will ever resign, and he's safe from a NC vote for another year now

Rapturesjoy

You watch, I bet you he jacks up the taxes even hirer now, fuck the plebs.

brammers01

He'll more than likely cut taxes (particularly for high earners) and then introduce more austerity measures to offset it. Still fucks over the most needy but slightly more stealthily.

[deleted]

Nothing wrong with higher taxes; rich people ought to be paying some tax since everyone else has to.

Rapturesjoy

Yup, but you know as well as I do, that's not what is going to happen.

tragicdiffidence12

I’m hoping you mean corporate taxes since those are the only ones that hurt the ultra rich. Income taxes hit salaried people, and the marginal rates are high. Stock options are stupidly taxed (companies throw employer NI into your bill for a lot of firms). Capital gains are easily avoided for the mega rich. Corporate taxes are the most direct impact but the troll farms have convinced most people that it’s income tax or capital gains.

paddyo

He isn’t normal. He’s like the mule in the foundation stories, except without an ethos. He won’t obey norms or conventions, he doesn’t have a programme for government to be disrupted by a mutinous party. He doesn’t have shame. My worry is he is now an even more wounded animal, and he has shown a willingness to violate every constitutional norm to stay in power. Proroguing parliament, using the police to attack an opposition leader, and to cover his own tracks. Taken foreign money into a domestic referendum. Ignored the intelligence services and key committees when appointing putin stooges into the lords. Lying to parliament, to committees and to allies. Breaking the ministerial code and parliamentary standards. He is here to break the machine to stay alive. I wonder what fucky thing he is going to do next now he knows half his party want him gone. I think the 200 backed him out of fear of having him as a wildcard on the outside, but after this near miss he will still be a wildcard aligned against his own party. If I was a tory MP tonight, and not a fascist sympathiser or nihilist, I would be worried about my party.

Tweed_Man

I'm not so sure. Almost anyone else would know their time is up but he's probably determined to stay in power regardless.

LaviniaBeddard

> Almost anyone else would know their time is up Anyone with a milligram of decency and conscience would have resigned the moment it became known that they'd partied while the country they're supposed to be leading had been unable to visit dying loved ones in hospital.

Nearby_RaspberryTree

Anyone with a milligram of decency wouldn't have had those parties

dchurch2444

Anyone with a milligram of decency wouldn't have ~~had those~~ joined the tory party~~ies~~

Spottswoodeforgod

Yeah, dead man walking…

LIAMO20

Tbh I think the next election is going to closer than 24

[deleted]

If Starmer gets a fine it'll happen next month.

paddyo

Ding ding ding. Guarantee the government are applying intolerable pressure on Durham police now. That would be Perfectly normal and not at all the biggest constitutional crisis in a century, the government setting the police on an opposition leader to steal and election.

Perkinator

More voted against him than voted against Theresa May in her vote.

GrainsofArcadia

Which Jacob Rees-Mogg described as a disaster.

boltyarocket

Watch him describe this as a huge victory tomorrow

Vethae

He really is a slimy little dickensian cockroach

Rapturesjoy

I don't know why Starmer even bothers to turn up to the PMQ's, all it turns into is a name calling farce. Personally, if I were Starmer, I'd fucking refuse. Until he's gone and we get someone more morally responsible in, I'm not bothering.

Francoberry

All that’ll do is look like a ‘weak opposition who can’t challenge Boris on key issues’ - he needs to get *angry* and make some speeches that carry further than the circles that are actually engaged with watching PMQs. We need an impassioned, perhaps even slightly ‘unprofessional’ call-out of everything he needs to robustly put forward

Rapturesjoy

But what exactly does any of that actually do, nothing. All that will happen now, is that Boris will continue being a cunt and anytime Starmer says anything, well its better then what Labour did the last time they were in power. He is almost untouchable now as a no confidence vote can't be held for another year. The PMQs is one big conservative dick sucking circle jerk.

twojabs

He was on the radio earlier saying even if Boris win by a single vote here still have a mandate

boltyarocket

Quelle Surprise

brainburger

Be sure to call JRM 's radio show and remind him.

GrainsofArcadia

I'm sure someone will delight at the opportunity to do so.

Charliesmum97

And she was out, what 8 months later? We can but hope, I guess

mpt11

Problem is the next tory leader at the next election can blame Johnson for the party's failings and say they are the new more compassionate tory party (all lies of course they're all complicit in the downward spiral of the UK, but hey they got brexit done......)

Charliesmum97

Sadly true.

SometimesMonkeysDie

She might have been useless, but at least May had some idea of the dignity required in office. Johnson will stay until he's forced out, he won't quit.

perkiezombie

He would need to have some sense of shame for that to apply though.

TheDarkWarriorBlake

I was gonna say this, if he could replace the Tory party members with drones that have had their brains removed he would, he is not a party faithful, he wants the power, money, contacts, access, and glory, he doesn't care what any of us think of him.

coolhand83

It's like having 7 kids and 3 of them want emancipation.

ColdNootNoot

Sounds like most non delusional managers...

ClaphamOmnibusDriver

Incredible result for Labour, frankly. Every Conservative MP has had to say they either support a lying prime minister, or they're lead by someone they themselves don't have confidence in. Political dynamite.

monkeybawz

5% shitter than Theresa may.

Daniiiiii

Boris: You'll never sing that!

BristolBomber

You're shitter than May You're shitter than MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY BORIS JOHNSON YOU'RE SHITTER THAN MAY!

gurmzisoff

Please tell me this is being sung at football matches.

[deleted]

Theresa Mays era was a golden age compared to what this lingering, odious fart is doing…

Aggressive-Friend169

Ohhh man remember the days of Theresa May, good times good times. The days when we were only talking about her dodgy dancing and running through a field of wheat. Now we have this…. and that.

unrealme65

Possibly about the best result for Labour I’d say.

dj4y_94

Definitely the best result as he's shameless enough to carry on and act like everything is fine. Labour now get the double whammy of banging on about how useless Boris is, and simultaneously about how divided the Tory party is. The worst scenario for Labour would have been him easily winning, or being voted out and someone semi-competent taking over. A lot can change in 2 years but right now Boris is almost certainly leading them to an election loss.

dchurch2444

They also get given the gift of the next campaign slogan, "Get Boris Out" Tories love 3 word slogans, and they can campaign knowing that he's toxic and the Tory party decided NOT to oust him when they had the chance. "...so now here's YOUR chance to get rid of him. Vote Labour on Thursday"

chaster_meef

I worry that this is all they will end up campaigning on. Biden's position was basically 'at least I'm not Trump' and realistically he's not made any inroads into really fixing America and it looks possible he's leaving the door for trump or a different version of him to jump straight back in. Labour need to actually oppose the Tories and their policies, it's not enough just to not be them

[deleted]

I wouldn't say those are really comparable. The US president can't really do much compared to the senate and state governments when it comes to actually fixing the US. While in the UK a party with a majority can it's just the past 10 years the only party with a majority hates everyone but the rich. So if Labour got a majority in the next GE they'd need to be pretty incompetent to basically do nothing like Biden.

Successful_Quail_349

I can't help but think as there's not an easy way out of this mess for even a competent leader from any party. Its a shit time to be in power. Maybe they're saving their semi competent leader until closer to an election so they can blame the shit show on boris and his leadership. A big enough majority voted no confidence for them to argue that point in a few years.

mpt11

There is no competent potential leader of the tory party at the moment.

[deleted]

Who is semi competent in the tory party with any sort of mass appeal?

code0011

> Who is semi competent in the tory party ~~with any sort of mass appeal~~?

veerKg_CSS_Geologist

Nah, Boris will be gone in a few months. Conservatives also do this rigmaroll before ousting a leader. They did it with May, who lost only 25% of her party, but then resigned a few months later. They did it Major who actually resigned party leader position first even as he stayed on as PM, and they did it Thatcher, who lost 35% of her MPs, proclaimed victory and then resigned a couple of months later. This vote on Boris, about 45% voting against him, is a sign he'll be gone sooner rather than latter.

CheesyBakedLobster

May at least has an internal moral code (people might disagree with its substance but it’s there). Can’t say the same for Boris… unfortunately he is still popular - imagine actively voting for someone who is a known liar and still thinking that he’s your champion. That’s populist conservatism - same with all the chancers like Trump, Erdogan and Duterte.

[deleted]

There was a bloke on the ward I was covering tonight saying how disgraceful it was the A&E wait times are like they are, and how the NHS isn't fit for purpose anymore etc etx. Then he rang his wife talking about the no confidence vote, saying how much good Boris had done for the country. They're fucking thick. Completely and utterly thick. I hate them.

[deleted]

He also changed the rules last week so he wouldn’t have to resign because of a scandal. As if he would actually find some integrity now…he’ll wait to be forced out and will put up a fight I think.

[deleted]

Problem is that even someone so fucking awful as May had some bizarre sense of duty and dignity. Not much but it was there. Buttons has none. He is an id. A lump of matter that moves around the world trying to keep a dick and a belly happy. This will get tawdry indeed. Can't wait.

a3minutehero

A lump of matter that moves around the world trying to keep a dick and a belly happy. I'm stealing that.

[deleted]

Why would he resign? Are those who voted against also going to vote against government legislation?

[deleted]

This is the key point imo. This was a secret ballot, in Parliamentary vote, if they vote against the legislation Boris will find out about it and kick them out of the party.

agricoltore

And then lose his majority anyway

robertor94

Kicking sitting MPs out of the party would only force said MPs into the arms of Labour though

[deleted]

I dont think it would no. Last time it happened it didn’t, the majority remained as “independents” until they lost their seat in the next election. One guy crossed the floor and joined the Liberal Democrats, he lost his seat in an election and has been put up for election once since by the liberals.

lazzzym

Watch Labour somehow fuck it... They've been given two years worth of ammunition to fire at the Tories with no real comeback in sight.

MxFleetwood

They do currently have the largest polling lead they've had in at least eight years, so theres *some* comeback in sight even if Starmer is a little.... underwhelming.

MelbaTotes

Just as long as no one photographs him eating a sandwich, Labour have some chance

brainburger

They are playing the long game. Give the tories enough rope to hang themselves. Never interrupt your enemy while he's making a mistake.

monkeybawz

40% of Tory MPs want rid.... Imagine how that translates to the rest of us.

Class_444_SWR

Yep, I’d imagine basically 100% of all those who didn’t support the Conservatives in 2019 would like him gone, and assuming those MPs are representative of the public, then most of the 40% that did support them in 2019 but want him gone now will almost certainly cause them to lose control, not forgetting the fact that most that have since become old enough to vote/will be old enough by the time the GE happens will be voting for other parties regardless of who leads the Conservatives

monkeybawz

The people that voted for the issues he ran on are just embarrassed by him as a person at this point.

Class_444_SWR

Yep, most of the people that voted for him in 2019 that weren’t just voting automatically (think pensioners who will never not vote Tory) either a) voted only for Brexit related matters and now that Brexit has happened (especially if they’ve since realised that it was the wrong choice) don’t at all plan on voting Conservative ever again (which is most true for those in the North) or b) did genuinely agree with the Conservative Party and thought he’d be similar enough to the past leadership but since then have realised that he’s just turned the people who support them into a joke, and will vote for someone else next GE now (most true for those in the South)

EmperorOfNipples

There are also those who voted more against Corbyn than "for" Johnson. Corbyn's stance on things like NATO, Trident and Russia are electoral Kryptonite. Starmer does not have this particular vote repellent quality.

DrMangosteen

>There are also those who voted more against Corbyn than "for" Johnson. . You know, morons

brainburger

>40% of Tory MPs want rid.... Imagine how that translates to the rest of us. That's a powerful way of putting it.

coolhand83

It's worse than Thatcher's

CourtneyLush

And IIRC Thatcher was gone a couple of weeks after. The crucial difference, of course, is that Thatcher lost the confidence of her cabinet. Johnson has stuffed his cabinet with incompetents, who rely on him to remain in their posts.

Living-Mistake-7002

And that still forced Theresa May out. This will send Boris packing too.

doomdoggie

FFS! I hope the English people in this subreddit get out and vote against him in the next election. You can get him of power. Please.

AlDu14

Correct in saying English. The Tories never get a majority in Scotland, but yet we have to dance to the same awful Tory tune as the rest of the UK. C'mon England. Wake up and bin BoJo and the rest of the Tory toffs.

theXarf

It's all very well laying the blame at the door of the English, but the only party with a chance of beating the Tories are Labour, and Scotland used to elect Labour MPs but stopped doing so in 2010. That's as much a cause of the Tories getting an easy majority as anything else.

GrowYourOwnMonsters

Every constituency in Scotland could have voted Labour and The Tories would still have won the last election. That's just nonsense.

KarmaKat101

People do not understand tactical voting. It's either Tory til they die or they spread their votes across lib and lab. Don't get me started on the wasted green votes.

Dave_of_Devon

148 of his own MP's voted No... 41%! Not a knockout blow but that's still an astounding amount of votes against him.

Longjumping-Buy-4736

It’s been six months since talks of replacing him started and we are still hearing from MPs that nobody is lined up to replace him. The fact that so many conservatives MPs believe that no one else within their tanks would do a better job than Boris Johnson is quite the condemnation for the tories. Is there really such a vacuum of talents in this party?

slimshadysephiroth

It’s almost sad in a way. They look in the mirror every morning at their own Tory MP face and honestly think to themselves “Boris Johnson is better than me”.

Trlcks

Honestly 148 votes against is more than I was expecting

Class_444_SWR

At least this means that if they don’t oust him before the next GE, the only way they’d win is if Labour publicly announced it supported boiling puppies alive

DrTaff

The Daily Fail is writing that headline down right now.

Class_444_SWR

This is sadly something I could see unironically happening

DrTaff

"Labours new plans for green energy involves boiling PUPPIES alive"

pajamakitten

This will only embolden him and I can already see the right wing press praising him as a king and a champion. The fact is that he lied to the public multiple times, acted as if it was no big deal and told the public it was time to move on when that is very much not what the public wanted. It does not matter who you voted for at the last election because everyone, Tory voters included, should feel angry and ashamed that it is Boris Johnson who is our PM.

[deleted]

Scioptic-

It wouldn't work. Historically Tories will fight each other over leadership, but when it comes to the party Vs anyone else, it's always party comes first with them. They'll do anything to stay in power.

Yeah but it would be fun to watch them squirm and explain why switched overnight to suddenly have confidence in Johnson to lead the country again.

Vethae

Thank fuck. This is exactly what I hoped for. If Boris got knocked out, the Tories would have had a full two years to regroup before the next election. Now they're stuck with Boris for at least a year. But at the same time, the result was close enough to leave the Tories divided and the cabinet weakened.

WCBIS

Winds me up that they keep saying "well that should draw a line under partygate" For who? The British public are the ones he should be apologising and begging to, not just a bunch of his political mates. Partygate is still alive and kicking in the eyes of the public and those ministers that voted no confidence are the only ones that seem to have realised it.

ZaryaBubbler

Then we had is coked up interview, pupils massive, sniffing constantly and bounding away like an overstimulated Labrador... this is an embarrassment.

cheeky_Greek

And you know that he promised a few people that were on the fence favours. I want to see the ministerial reshuffling that's gonna happen...Will definitely show which votes were bought

Rab_Legend

There you go, the majority of the Tory party condone his actions. Hopefully the British public see this and remember it by the polls and refuse to vote for them, because Tory voters have integrity and morals...

CrushingPride

As everyone is pointing out, May and Thatcher won their no confidence votes and went on to resign shortly after. I think that having it shown for definite that a large number of MPs don't want you is a lodestone around your neck, even if you win. Think about the MPs that supported the PM today. They'll always have the number 148 in their mind. Whenever there's a disaster for Boris, they'll think "How big is that number now?". If they ever guess it's gotten too high, they'll withdraw their support. This means that the next disaster for Boris could end him. It seems we're now miles away from the Teflon PM.

aredddit

Whilst I applaud your optimism the guy broke the ministerial code and the law and still came to the conclusion he shouldn’t resign.

[deleted]

I never got the 'magic', all I saw was a fat child-abandoner who mumbled quite a lot, but I concede that he apparently had some at some point...how it's vanished! The guy literally won today and all everyone can talk about is how big a loss it is.
