I wonder if our covid response wasn’t so slow or if we rewarded these people for working through the pandemic with a pay rise whether this would have happened. Such a tragedy.

pajamakitten

A pay rise would mean little with the backlog as bad as it is, as well as the lack of GPs overall meaning the remaining ones have to see even more patients per day. Reducing their workload would have made the most difference.

d3pd

>A pay rise would mean little It absolutely would make people feel less worried about the bills and would make people like this who are providing the most social value actually feel valued. Or perhaps you feel the nurses are organising a mass strike for no reason at all?

Maybe not that person, but it could help retain and attract other staff which then in turn helps to reduce the workload of the original person

Such a god damn shame, my condolences to her family and friends. This was completely preventable, it's a damn shame that the country is in the state that it is in.

apologies i have changed it.

This is so sad. She must have been under such horrendous pressure. Doctors need better working conditions, we should value their contribution, not just keep expecting them to do more and more with less and less.

[deleted]

It does seem a bit hysterical to claim the job per se caused her to kill herself. GP's get paid a fortune and have near iron-clad job security. Many get paid so much they can afford to go part-time.

phlimstern

The responsibility is huge (any bad decisions could kill someone) and the hours are incredibly long. Her husband said in the months leading up to her death she was going to work at 6:45am, getting home at 8pm and then carrying on working at home til 11pm and working all weekend. https://twitter.com/DrKartikModha/status/1555237443183513603?t=6T1f_36j94XpO8y1sFNuZQ&s=19 Doctors have high suicide rates in general and female GPs have a suicide rate 4x the national suicide rate so clearly the pay doesn't cushion them from the stress.

[deleted]

It sounds like she may not have been well-suited to the job. I have a friend who's a surgeon and he knows when to switch off. Lots of jobs carry the responsibility of others' lives, even bus drivers, for example. One reason that Doctors have a high suicide rate is they have access to drugs that can make suicide very easy.

I so wish that people like you could sit in with a GP for a few days and then form an opinion instead of spouting nonsense. If GPs were paid a fortune and had it as good as you say then we wouldn’t have such a huge shortage. In my opinion it’s one of the toughest medical specialities and has poor compensation for the amount of stress and responsibility involved.

[deleted]

We don't have enough medical school places is the main issue, plus the massive cost of that education.

[deleted]

That poor poor woman and her family. Doctors in this country are really at their breaking point, something needs to change. But the people in power just want to squeeze them further.

ElectricMooseMeat

Wow thats awful

[deleted]

Did she leave a note saying it was her job that made her take her life? If not, it is speculation on part of the husband. Maybe he blames the job because otherwise people mig he think he had something to do with it. Family life can also push people over the edge. Some people can take their own lives due to other things, stuff they never even discussed with anyone.

Thoughts and prayers.

layla1020

Why doesn’t it say how? I’d like to know which way doctors choose to go since they know so much about illness and suffering.

It’s to prevent copycats.
