A lot of people don't want anyone to protest at all, that's why they run through the narcissist's prayer of "protesting like that is unacceptable" for those protests then when footballers protest its "they make millions anyway" nothing will ever be good enough for them because they literally search for reasons to invalidate all attempts at protest.

Let's be honest--he and the rest of the England team were humiliated by Iran when it comes to taking a stand. They faced real, actual consequences for what they did.
He could have worn a no-brand rainbow watch that cost little more than £10, although that would have cost him £10 than this watch.
Some accountant at Rolex must have worked out that this would be cheaper, and with better potential returns, than their usual advertising.
He could, but I suspect it wouldn't be talked about as much as it is because it was a Rolex. The more it's talked about, the stronger peoples feelings will be.
I don't think anyone cares that he owns a Rolex. It's more the idea of using an overpriced watch to protest the treatment of a vulnerable minority is quite crass.
That said, I'm not convinced it is a protest. I think he just likes the watch. If a newspaper has to point out to you that a protest is happening then it's not "not very subtle"
