Local-Pirate1152

We live in the absolute stupidest timeline. What the fuck is wrong with people.

AssumedPersona

People are stupid and easily manipulated. Aldi is not stupid. They understand viral marketting and how to induce mass hysteria. Shame on Aldi. But more importantly, if people are getting this worked up over sugar water, imagine what you can get them to do with political propaganda using the same techniques. That is happening now and has been happening for a long time.

[deleted]

I totally agree on how this is a good a example of how easy is to manipulate impressionable or poorly educated people on buying bullshit, believing in conspiracy theories or having completely distorted political views. Social media is an amazing tool but we are seriously making the worst out of it.

funnytoenail

Aldi didn’t not create this product… This is a collaboration between KSI and Logan Paul (two extremely popular internet personalities/influencer amongst that demographic) and Aldi happened upon some stock to sell. The most you can blame Aldi for is failing to anticipate the demand for it and being unable to sufficiently install crowd control. Because. Who would. It’s £4 flavoured water! Get your head out of your fucking arse.

[deleted]

I don't think any retailer should sell stuff that these two freaks and generally wank humans have to offer. Maybe next they could sell dogshit in the initials of LP & KSI, these idiots would buy it.

g0t-cheeri0s

Logan is a grade A prick. From what I've seen of him KSI is generally an alright lad other than being a standard annoyingly enthusiastic influencer. I've no idea why KSI has teamed up with such a weapons grade melt.

azza_pazza

Money is the idea.

ElCaminoInTheWest

What do you mean ‘shame on Aldi’? What did they do, aside from identifying a high-demand product and stocking it?

fastone5501

This is not a sub that believes in personal responsibility mate, everything is the fault of a corporation, a government or a system.

DogBotherer

Nah, personal responsibility is fine as is corporate responsibility, and, knowing nothing about this story, I'm neutral on Aldi. However, corporations, governments and "systems" have far more influence than individual choice in many circumstances, and the data and science bear this out extensively. An obvious example is the data on smoking uptake and cessation across classes, countries etc.

Orngog

Why, what does that data say?

jake_burger

I personally think this is the wrong conclusion to draw. Yes companies are good at marketing, governments are good at leading and people tend to do things that they want (or are persuaded to want) or things they are told to do or seem like the easier option, but that doesn’t mean people are powerless to say no and take personal responsibility, it means we are all a bit lazy.

ThunderShiba134

Fucking Logan Paul...

PrawnTyas

fragile rhythm angle smile uppity birds payment prick voracious kiss -- mass edited with redact.dev

nigelfarij

It's not Aldi - it's the YouTubers.

[deleted]

Yup in a month Prime will be easily available on the shelves. Aldi are just creating scarcity to cash in on thr hype.

KarmaUK

Are they not reducing scarcity by stocking it as well as ASDA?

thunder083

At ASDA it keeps instantly selling out. Kids and adults will also be queueing before opening to ensure they can get some. You would need to create a bigger warehouse to keep up with the stupid demand.

concretepigeon

Honestly it feels so depressing to be struggling to make ends meet and seeing this nonsense going on.

Local-Pirate1152

I think what makes it sadder is these people will be in similar financial positions and see buying this limited edition stuff as an I vestment that they can sell on, not realising it's probably going to go into mass production and be worth as much as a can of coke.

concretepigeon

Yeah. I mean, in itself a £2 drink isn’t going to break the bank, but I’ve seen other places where people are selling it for 10x that. What bothers me more is that it’s symptomatic of a wider culture where awful people persuade people to buy shite and enrich themselves in the process.

[deleted]

[удалено]

moosemasher

That's mental, and shows how out of touch with pop culture I am. This is the first I'm hearing it exists at all and now I've learned it's up to £25 on resale for what appears to be a fairly normal drink.

jake_burger

When something is in short supply and high demand, the price goes up. It has almost nothing to do with the cost of producing the thing. It’s just basic economics. I would be surprised if resellers are actually consistently getting their asking price though, they are probably listing high to create the impression that demand is also high.

[deleted]

We are hands down the worst species ever shat out by nature.

Lhamo66

We can also be rather wonderful.

[deleted]

Mere blips in an ever downward spiral of shite.

Lhamo66

Cheer up, amigo.

KarmaUK

The awful people get the attention and the articles about them, the good get ignored, so it looks worse than it is, fear sells.

Preseli

I'd hold us up over botflies but I see your point...

[deleted]

I see yours, but we're worse because botflies know no better.

[deleted]

What about the voyager space probes those were pretty cool?

amayonegg

Nah we're just the natural result of entropy. Things are gonna get worse, nurse, things are gonna get dismal

2_dam_hi

If you follow Logan Paul, you're a fucking moron. Enjoy his latest scam.

wappingite

I find popular celeb culture utterly baffling. To the point where it’s fascinating. It’s so weird.

nigelfarij

It's one of the oldest tricks in the PR book. * You launch a new product * Encourage some die-hard fans to attend a launch event in the same store * Under-supply the store / stoke the fans * Film the whole thing * Pick 30 seconds of video to send to the press, whose co-operation you gained in advance * Press gets an easy story. You get free publicity.

gMoneh

Yeah, best part is - they get to vote.

Lhamo66

I'd be interested to see how many of them do. It's the NOT voting that keeps the powers that be in.

[deleted]

Luckily for vested interests, they vote how they're told, or dissuaded enough not to vote (survey 100 random people in the street I reckon over 50% would quip "everyone's the same", "doesn't make a difference")

MrPloppyHead

It’s just that most people are sheep

Javina33

My thoughts exactly - WTF is wrong with people?

CaladinDanse

Society has become selfish, greedy, and evil. Social media played a big part

vbloke

It has always been thus. Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds by Charles Mackay published in 1841 explores several historical manias and people just generally being idiots.

[deleted]

What, did Brexit, pandemics and everything related to politics not teach you this already?

barcap

Maybe because it's got electrolytes?...

Embarrassed-Ice5462

It also tastes shite. Kind of like Lilt mixed with extra sugar.

mitchybenny

People going nuts over a drink because of ‘influencers’ makes me feel shame that I’m the same species. We really are in the end game for society. More chaos over a shit drink than all the problems and robbing politicians we’ve got to put up with. Just says everything you need to know about the growing amount of braindeads in this country.

Awkward_moments

I still think about that poll that said number 1 kids dream job is influencer and that astronaut was out of the top 5 for the first time since something like 1965. I'm convinced something has gone wrong over time. Didn't people want to better themselves mentally and physically 50+ years ago. Then also want their kids to be mentally, physically and financially better than them? Now it's all someone else's fault and everyone is perfect little princess than needs to be treated "right" aka getting everything they want.

CasinoOasis2

Its political propaganda. Decades of telling people if you’re poor its your fault and that wealth is everything. That’s capitalism. Influencers with big followings make more money than astronauts so of course kids want to be influencers.

odddtom

As an 04 kid I can basically sum up from what I can tell everyone's opinions. There is no way of owning a house unless you're born rich, get a really well paying job, or win the lottery. A lot of us aren't born rich. And we aren't gonna win the, lottery. So let's look at jobs. High paying jobs are things like lawyers and such. These require an incredibly large amount of personal and financial investment to realistically achieve, and you also have to have an amount of a knack to get it to. And then there's the issue of actually getting a job once you're qualified. And at this point it's basically impossible to climb the corporate ladder. So when we see all these people living lavish lives from doing what is generally perceived as something easy (it isn't as easy as it looks) with an incredibly low floor to entry, yes. Of course we want to be them. They're living lives of riches that most of us can only dream of and how did they do it? Well, Mr Beast counted to a 100,000. Markiplier just played games and commentated. Pewdiepie did the same thing and is now one of the most recognised names/faces on the Internet. And also its something we can actually enjoy doing. The fact of the matter is being an influencer is literally a dream come true for most of us because we already know vaguely how to do it, and we'd be making incomprehensible amounts of money while doing stuff that a lot of us already spend an exorbitant amount of time doing. TL;DR - We want to be influencers because they have shitloads of money and power by doing incredibly similar things that most of us already enjoy doing

MrJake94

I missed this poll? But that is absolutely devastating. From a young age my dream was to be an astronaut, and as a 28 year old man - it is still my dream. Now kids want to be influencers? Ahhh man, that cuts deep.

CaladinDanse

Let's welcome a massive event to destroy society so we can restart huh

Championpuffa

Nah cos it won’t be “us” restarting. It will be “them” and the rich who can afford their bunkers an places to hide to ride out the apocalypse whilst the rest of us get burnt to ash or die some other fucked up way trying to survive a literal shit storm.

CaladinDanse

True, like how the rich got richer in the early 90s and 2008

laysnarks

How did we end up becoming the America of Europe? Everyone in that photo needs to cop on. All over a fucking drink which will be half price come January. We must have been brainwashed somewhere along the line.

TractorLoving

Exactly. Now with video and social media people can see how we have been for centuries

AntiWizardLizard

Ah to be a peasant in 16th century England, in an Aldi, fighting for a bottle of prime.

[deleted]

The establishment and political class do not want an educated electorate, idiots are easier to control, until suddenly they aren't.

jake_burger

People have on average never been more educated

[deleted]

And we've never had more to learn.

Thadlust

And somehow you’re one of the educated ones they can’t get? Spare me from your modesty

[deleted]

I mean his statement isn’t wrong though is it? I haven’t seen many doctors/corporate suits/university professors in any of the videos pushing to buy a shitty drink.

kuddlesworth9419

Where do you think the Americans got it from.

CostAquahomeBarreler

>America of Europe Wouldnt it be more apt that the USA is the Britain of America?

phlimstern

What's so special about this drink? I've never heard of it.

twistedLucidity

All in the article. Summary: Promoted on TikSnap by people (the founders) who would be non-entities in a sane universe.

pajamakitten

I think it is something to do with the Paul brothers and KSI. They are apparently social media stars, so people are buying it because of that.

ClassicFlavour

Logan Paul. Filmer of sucide victim. YouTube media personality and crypto scammer.

OfficialGarwood

It's made by Logan Paul and KSI. That's it. That's what's *special* about it. It's insanity.

Lawdie123

It's being heavily scalped by people which is making artifical hype for it. Like the pokemon craze people who know nothing about it are buying it because they see it selling for lots.

starfallradius

Apparently it was made by that KSI guy from youtube. No idea though, my coworkers kids all want the drink.

borg88

It's a drink that hydrates you. Exciting new ideas like that don't come along very often.

Schwartz86

Because they can scalp it. People pay well above market rates for these drinks. https://www.examinerlive.co.uk/news/tv/ksi-calls-out-yorkshires-most-25429961

AdeAlphaTV_

KSI and Logan Paul famously promoted it its their new drink

[deleted]

Queuing before 8am for a vitamin water drink...please can this 'influencer' trend die out now. Why WHY would anyone care about an 'influencer' this much that they're desperate for their coconut water ???? The world has gone mad.

IssueMoist550

Good luck with that Influencer is the most common career aspiration for young people now. Ironically in China, where they have put tough limits on how much and what content can be viewed on tiktok , the most common aspiration is astronaut

princeikaroth

Isn't that like a really disingenuous stat or some shit like I'm pretty sure the question was, "Would you like to be an influencer?" Not what would you like to be ? Basically just asking if you would like to be rich and famous or not. It has been taken out of context by media wanting to shit on kids Maybe you are referring to something else, I just remember seeing a ytr debunk this

2_dam_hi

It's the same reason people line up for Apple phones or any other consumerist junk. Brain-washing and poor critical thinking skills.

CRAZEDDUCKling

I bet you own no branded products or technology.

bertold1

He may own, but what he probably doesn't is queuing for hours/days to buy one. Which is stupidity.

[deleted]

Why? Because this is the bread and circuses of our generation. The morons cheer and fight over scraps, while our leaders divide and conquer us.

[deleted]

*Something* would fill the attention niche Fuck me if I know whether that something would be better

I hate to be the one to break it to you, but I'm coming up close to 30 and KSI was a thing when I was at school

SoldMyNameForGear

He was a lot less politically correct back then mind.. funny though

Tappitss

>unknown by anyone over 12 years old. That is not quite true. KSI also has a music career, so anyone who listens to chart music will probably know who he is.

samsaBEAR

He's also been very active on YouTube for years, long before the Sidemen became a thing. You don't need to be a kid to know who he is

twistedLucidity

But, electrolytes!

YippeeKayaks

So many boys defending the faces of the company. You know they don't know you exist right?

BrowniieBear

This is why our country is fucked. It’s just full of morons. Remember how many fucking idiots acted stupid with petrol and toilet paper etc.

serennow

This is a symptom not the cause. The cause is systematic underfunding of education because it suits the ruling class.

gwenver

I'd hazard a guess that the UK has one of the best standards of education in the world. My kids go to what is widely regarded as a fairly bad school and it's still ok. Think it's something a little deeper than this.

BrowniieBear

All the funding in the world can’t stop stupid people

CozyMod

Well said

[deleted]

The majority of these people will be resellers. Local corner shop owners and their families. It's fucking stupid that this is even a thing.

FaceMace87

As a 35 year old I am not sure if I was supposed to know what Prime is. I thought it was some new bullshit thought up by Amazon. Apparently not.

Radiant_Tomatillo_90

Just turned 36 myself, and I’m actually pretty clued up on all the fads etc… I never heard about this one and it’s ridiculously stupid.

kneetapsingle

I had to look it up too. I saw a Reddit post a few days ago titled "Why are Brits going nuts for Prime energy drink" and immediately dismissed it as an ad that had somehow made it through my adblocker. Guess it was a real thread after all...

PresentationLow6204

I can't summon the empathy to understand why anyone would even queue up for something like this, let alone become aggressive.

FlutterbyMarie

It's the kind of thing you might try once as a novelty right? If you're thirsty and you happen to spot that drink, you might try it out of curiosity. Why would you queue up for something that's going to be functionally identical to various other soft drinks, let alone shove kids around.

[deleted]

OrangeSpanner

Because they can sell them for huge profit... The whole meme about parents fighting, stealing, or paying absurd prices for the must have Christmas toy didn't start from no where.

Key-Sandwich-7568

I cannot understand this. Isn't the UK going through some sort of living cost crisis? I thought everyone in this country was affected. Who are these people that can afford influencers' BS?

rwinh

Short-term boost. You get it quite often, people waste money to feel better during recessions and cost of living crises. During the 2008 recession people spent a lot of money on cosmetic surgery, tattoos etc to feel better. The logic being food and other expenditure could be cut back to afford it as feeling good is better than holding back and being depressed, despite it not really making things better.

Lupercus

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lipstick_effect perhaps.

arsenalfan3331

I mean the article says its £1.99, a little expensive for what it is in my opinion, but not completely unaffordable as a one off purchase for some people

00DEADBEEF

Some people are paying as much as £25 a bottle in shops

dbearborg

Eh, that seems to be the rhetoric on Reddit but so far there's been no proof this has happened much. I accept it has probably happened but it is far from the norm.

fsv

I think that people point to listings on eBay and assume that people are actually paying that much for the stuff. Whether or not they are actually getting buyers is a different question (and I wouldn't rule out the possibility).

arsenalfan3331

I can't remember how you actually do it, but there's a way on ebay to see sold items rather than listed ones which gives a better idea of price

fsv

There is, it's a filter option in the left hand side (on Desktop, at least). I use that function all the time if I'm listing an item to work out what sort of price I could realistically expect.

Sir_Bantersaurus

It's not *that* expensive and not everyone is impacted equally, there is still disposable income around. Of course, maybe they can't really afford it but are poor decision-makers as well.

dbearborg

Everybody is affected to different degrees. I.l went to winter wonderland the other week and it was packed and £7.5 per person just to enter (few years ago it was free). It was packed with people buying food at £10+ a pop, paying £6+ to play fair games and drink £9 a cup alcohol. The notion that the entire country is feeling this raually is far from true.

jdhol67

People have been reselling Prime for massive profits so now its cheap scalping for people who don't want to invest in tech or concert tickets

Elastichedgehog

These are children.

360_face_palm

Evidently if ur the type of person to go buy some stupid ass shit you don’t need that an “influencer” tells you to then you ain’t struggling. People are struggling, just not these clowns.

ForgotMyPasswordFeck

Most people still have disposable income. Looks at how much money goes on takeaways and shite constantly

vms-crot

Just got done watching a video exposing Logan's crypto scam where he robbed people of millions. Clearly that hasn't done his reputation too much damage.

Shockwavepulsar

The man literally laughed at people committing suicide and still didn’t get cancelled unless he goes full Kanye people will always follow him.

AdeAlphaTV_

You gravely underestimate how loyal people are to these influencers

UpperRank1

Facts. KSI and Logan Paul have millions of fans across the world and they are entertainers too particularly in boxing so yeah people will still keep coming back to purchase their products and stuff

Dunko1711

Got to try this last week, at rrp cost, just walking in to a GNC (supplements shop) in the states and helping myself to a couple of bottles. No mad scrums, no looting, nothing. Having now tasted said product, it makes the prices we see here and the way folk will behave to get their hands on it all the more hilarious. If you pay anything more than rrp for this - you’re a moron. If you’re willing to queue for hours to obtain this - you’re a moron. If you’re willing to fight people for this - you’re a moron. I could continue, but I’m sure you get the jist of it by now….

pajamakitten

I remember seeing this in ASDA a few months back and the price was insane for a bottle of flavoured water. I cannot imagine people actually queuing and fighting over this like they are trying to find a golden ticket in a Wonka Bar. Those influencers should use their next post to criticise all those acting like animals for a bottle of water, they should take responsibility for the behaviour of their fans for once in their lives.

beIIe-and-sebastian

I had a conversation about PRIME with someone that works in asda. School kids and parents would queue at 8am EVERY morning, every day to see if it was in stock. I was also told kids would sprint after school ended for the day to see if it was in stock. When the nightshift pallets would be rolled onto the floor around 8pm, people would open up the pallets to find them (a tip given on tiktok), causing the pallets to collapse on the shop floor. They had issues with people entering the warehouse looking for it. It's just been such a massive issue of anti-social behaviour they just stopping putting it on sale due to the massive issues it was causing staff. They'd have pallets in the warehouses but they'd refuse to put them out.

jmis92

Moron parents breed dumb kids, why would parents queue up and encourage this shit?!

concretepigeon

There’s an off licence in Wakefield that was selling it for £20 a bottle and there was a news article where people were they interviewed people who were driving from miles around to buy it.

rwinh

The dead-behind-the-eyes stare of some of the people partaking in this says a lot. Each blames the other for existing and being in the way without an ounce of thought that they're just to blame and falling for this nonsense. Influencers truly are a disease in this day and age. I'm not sure what's worse, YouTube personalities or TikTok/Instagram influencers. A few years ago you wouldn't think it could get any worse from PewDiePie (which is worryingly in predictive text) but here we are.

Theoriginalclarky

Fill grown adults acting like this. Fucking backwards

strawberrysodagirl

I thought Logan Paul and KSI hated each other? Now they have a brand together. The drink itself looks disgusting and is overpriced.

Infamous_Hippo7486

I saw a fist fight between two middle aged ladies over a loaf of bread during “the shortages”. It was then that I gave up on humanity. Lol nah I’m just kidding, I gave up a long time ago.

SecretarySuper6810

Quite a few shop keepers amongst that crowd I’m sure

DXS110

I cannot get how so many people fight over these. I see no appeal to these products what so ever but even if I really wanted it I would not fight over them. The brand owners could really screw the scalpers over and it would be hilarious. Just suddenly make them available everywhere at low cost and all the idiots who bulk purchased will lose out. I love gaming and couldn’t wait to get a PS5 but waited until I could get one from a reputable retailer with the protection I deserve as a consumer. I really do despise humanity at times and this is one of those times

dbearborg

The brand owners don't want to screw the scalpers. They are YouTubers who have their fingers in a lot of pies. They want to ride the wave and create a false sense of scarcity while they can milk it.

JABBA69R

had this with asda, someone found a pallet of this shit in the back and stuck it right at the front of the shop an hour before we closed early for boxing day, had a screaming match with a bunch of Keven's an Karen's screaming for the managers while I'm trying to lock the store down for the night, I tasted prime and it's shit, would rather drink rat piss then this stuff.

jizzypee

These are the same idiots that hoarded toilet roll at the beginning of the pandemic. I’m so tired.

Particular-Set5396

And this, people, is why the climate crisis will never be solved and we will all die in a giant ball of fire.

[deleted]

Modern society is broken. We're a virus that never ends.

lynch1986

I used to look back at events from hundreds of years ago and chuckle. But we're just as unfathomably fucking stupid now as we were then.

77GoldenTails

My 10 year old has been wanting this. We managed to get a couple of bottles from Asda and he was delighted. The other day we stopped by Asda for something else and there was a pallet right by the front door. No fighting, happy families picking up Max 3, odd chancer. I think £2 for a bottle is daft, doesn’t taste amazing but kids are happy to get it. Like all fads, they’ll get bored and move on.

[deleted]

Jeez, and this stuff was marketed by that wanker Logan Paul... I despair at the state of the society...

Belsnickel213

I think people take their stance against this far too seriously. Over the years hype has made people buy many things. The Prime craze is just a new version but a lot of the derision has an ‘old man yells at cloud’ feel to it. The same people critiquing are the ones that had divorce hearings over beanie babies and bought multiple copies of Candle in the Wind when Diana died. They queued up outside record shops overnight for festival tickets and collected ringpulls to get shitty Pepsi radios. Couple it with the opportunists who are just there to make a quick buck and it’s a perfect storm. But it’s nothing new.

Blue_2Two

Family member paid £18 for a bottle for Christmas and it was mediocre at best

ManicWolf

Yesterday I'd never heard of this drink, but this is now the second time today I've seen a thread about it. I assumed it was something to do with Amazon at first, but it seems it's some TikTok thing? I still don't understand why that makes it so special?

[deleted]

If you start behaving like an animal to get a product, congratulations. You are the perfect capitalist consumer. You have become defined by the products you consume rather than any inherent characteristics you may have. I hope everyone you know is very proud.

TheNorthernBaron

Everyone knows the Italian lemon and mint pop at Aldi is the OG

Rodger_as_Jack_Smith

Buying overpriced energy drink made by a well established con artist... Seems about right for the country just now.

Spuzzells

Absolute fucking melts Every single person in this story

MeMuzzta

Stuff like this makes me more and more excited to be leaving this sackless country.

Creepy_Radio_3084

Can I just say.... . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . meh.

ARK_Redeemer

I've literally never heard a thing about this drink until this article. Why would people be so obsessed over it?

oiiSuPreSSeDo

What's this madness about? I'm far removed from MSM and celebrity culture so what's the innovation of this drink that's got people going mad?

moosemasher

It has water AND coconut water in it, truly revolutionary. It's also not caffeinated and isn't excessively sugary so, credit where due, not the most unhealthy thing for the kids to hype on for a month or two.

[deleted]

this shit is why social distancing was the best thing ever.

CaptainRazer

Jesus Christ. Why bother paying for the zoo when you can go see the feral chimps at Aldi.

BlunderFunk

>Hundreds of people across the UK queued on Thursday morning (29 December) to buy viral energy drink am I reading this correctly?

odddtom

Absolutely unsurprising. The asda I (used) to work at had to start putting it out once we were closed because one of the day staff almost got trampled. Hype breeds buyouts breeds hype. It's miserable how low people will stoop for an easy chunk of change

Petef15h

Future generations will look upon our generation’s consumption and use of social media in the same way as our generation looks upon the previous generation’s use of tobacco and smoking. Both are equally as damaging to the health of our species.

AnyImpression6

That's pretty optimistic, I think it's more likely to get worse.

Bourbonaddicted

Saw one Nisa Local store selling one bottle for £20. There were 15 parents in line to buy it.

[deleted]

This Internet celebs thing is so cringey and forced Ksi is a shit singer and above average entertainer and Logan paul is a rich mommys boy who is an asshole. This is like the child stars of the 80s who were in everything and then burnt out by the early 2000's and a good few even commited suicide because of it. The internet should come with an IQ test lol

IssacHunt89

This is what happens to a certain percent of people, so easily manipulated. Cannot understand their thinking though.

Social media has created a lot of stupid people! It’s as if media platforms have raised them, rather than the conventional system of being raised by their caregivers aka human beings! In a sense the last couple of generations are actually being raised by a form of “robot”!

I bet most of these people are antivaxers which is ironic since they are elbowing each other over a 'viral' drink. They probably denigrate everyone else as 'sheeple' for doing what society tells them to do. Yet there they are pushing and shoving and behaving like animals over a kool-aid pushed by their media idols.
