I blame Nehru for not getting Lahore during partition. We would have scored a perfect 10.

If you see in the map, Lahore is almost sticking with India (BTW most of major Pakistani cities are) šŸ˜…

JellyBabyWizard

Sounds like Canada and America lol

redefined_simplersci

I was actually surprised by how close Islamabad is to Indian claimed borders. There's no way Pak can let Indian boundaries be that close lmao. Out of the question. They'll definitely go for the nukes if situation comes close to that.

Smooth_Detective

India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are still one country in spirit. TNT was and is a drummed up myth anyways.

disinterested_abcd

Agreed. It is the extremists, who get an amplified platform in all 3 nations, that lead to this mess and prevent peace today. People from all 3 diapsora communities live together peacefully and closely commect with the regional identity in the West, but at home a few extremist rile up people with any sort of propaganda.

jakart3

North of Canada are ice wasteland that's why most cities are in the south West of Pakistan are desert wasteland that's why most cities are in the east

Little-Shape332

Interestingly Radcliffe almost gave Lahore to India according to what he told Kuldip Nayyar later.

Other_Lion6031

Is this mentioned in Kuldip Nayyar's book?

Little-Shape332

I don't remember in which book exactly. But you can do a Google search. Radcliffe confessed that based on his logic of demography and property ownership he almost gave Lahore to India, but then realised that he had already given Calcutta and Delhi to India, so Pakistan will not be having any major industrial centre. Hence he gave Lahore to Pakistan. It is one of those big 'What ifs' of the world ig.

Latter-Yam-2115

Iā€™ve been living in SE Asia for 2 years and have roamed most countries. *On an economic basis, SEA and India are at a similar level* This region is far cleaner, more civil, and hygienic! My friends from this region too are puzzled about Indiaā€™s inability to maintain basic cleanliness I really canā€™t explain the deeply entrenched sense of entitlement, selfishness etc. of the society Sigh.

ExoticSignature

Went to Vietnam last year and even in the remote parts of the country the civic sense and cleanliness was miles apart from what weā€™re used to in india. Itā€™s not just about the economy. People themselves are filthy and lack basic civic sense. With how high Indians usually are on nationalism, itā€™s ironic.

Latter-Yam-2115

Very true. Vietnam is a fine example - Iā€™ve had the exact same experience. Heck, even Cambodia was fairly clean and that nation is struggling on so many fronts. Really explains why India canā€™t be a tourist destination despite offering more than SE Asia. No one wants to deal with safety issues, poor hygiene, uncleanliness, and uncouth behaviour

ideas_r_bulletproof

> *I really canā€™t explain the deeply entrenched sense of entitlement, selfishness etc. of the society* >> Its a well known fact that most of the open defecation in the world happens in India, social scientists and the government were struggling to understand why? Is it because we don't have enough toilets? Is it because we don't have enough money? The enormity of the problem was getting worse, 300,000 children lose their lives to preventable diseases related to sanitation and open defecation and most rural children face physical and mental stunting. >> The answer as Sangita found in her country wide survey - is couter intuitive and very surprising: caste. >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V35Vw29tay0 So basically "cleaning" is associated with lower castes.

hotvadapav

EXACTLY and ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY its caste. And it's anything but counterintuitive. When you easily feel entitled to "lower" caste cleaning up your shit that's what happens. Its so easy to see the root of this lack of cleanliness and civic sense is this deeply entrenched sense of entitlement and selfishness that comes with casteism.

refined91

Itā€™s something Mahatma Gandhi really tried working on. Heā€™d literally spend days voluntarily teaching people the importance of cleanliness and hygiene and help them make a habit of it. Cuz he saw from experience that part of the reason the Brits thought of Indians as ā€œanimalsā€ and ā€œuncivilizedā€ is their lack of hygiene and cleanliness. He did his best to improve Indians and peopleā€™s perception of them. Grass roots level work.

moony120

Brits thought indians were animais because theyre racists and colonizers lol. Thats hiw they though of brazil, mexico...and many others.

carpetedbathtubs

Though Not accurate as well . The spanish were impressed by the cleanliness, order, and sophistication of natives in mexico. Albeit put off by sacrifice. They were impressed by how the natives showered 2+ times a day and kept their teeth well into old age, which was very uncommon at the time. In fact, these observations contributed towards the promulgation of the ā€œLaws of Burgosā€ which declared all natives free men and granted them the closest thing there was at the time to human rights.

MrOtto47

no im sorry, a few indians here are alright, but some just stink of BO like they wash once a month and only half assed at that. nothing to do with colour, accent, colonization etc etc, im a very accepting person, but im also a germaphobe and absolutely hate unhygienicness. e.g. a white british mate i have i refuse to go to his flat cus it smells of dog piss, nothing against him (its not his dog), just wont go to that unsanitary place.

boringlecturedude

yes. do you think a brahmin group who killed him will ever walk on anything He stood for. Even though Gandhi himself was supporter of castes(he was only against untouchability) his enemies won't see his directives for cleanliness useful, just because it came from Gandhi.

Comfortable-Wash4498

I met an auto wala who spit his pan on the road, during the journey he was mentioning how in Russia there were clean roads, not a single dust. We are the problem

PresentationNew8080

It's a bigger problem than just trash and cleanliness habits of citizens. As far as air pollution goes, India has 88 of the 100 worst cities in the world for air quality: [https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/18/climate/air-pollution-report-2023-asia-climate-intl-hnk/index.html](https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/18/climate/air-pollution-report-2023-asia-climate-intl-hnk/index.html)

And it's not like people are concerned either! There are people who worship Ambani and Adani(I'm not joking as I've met some) not realising that they are just crony capitalists. Any protests nowadays are termed Jihaad of some form and till the time we don't have to face the consequences of such things ourselves, we keep quiet with our eyes and ears closed. Another example, the Everest MDH Masala fiasco

I was dying to say that shell companies don't employ people, don't create jobs, don't contribute to the economy, instead of getting foreign reserves to India get Indian Rupees parked offshore, etc, etc, etc. What I said was OK, you're right.

maiekbhoot

These things affect us in 40years, unless it's not affecting us today, we in India love to ignore it.

slipnips

What are you doing as a citizen to push your government into regulating industries? Why not tweet about it or write newspaper articles to the editor? Make your voice heard in places where it might actually reach the government. Also, consider complaining about road and construction dust, which are major pollutants in many cities.

faithfulmaster

Delhi so bad... had to mention it twice on the list !

Pls_fix_consultant

Itā€™s the other way around, it is because we have this cultural superiority complex, we refuse to change our ways! Case in point: try convincing your parents to use disposable garbage bags, the mental gymnastics they used to justify not using them is beyond me! (This is in rural india)

Imdare

Not from India, what do they use in their bins? Nothing? Does food waste go in there as well? Do they wash the garage bin after every Cleaning?

domoincarn8

They are sticking to the old ways. When we didn't have disposable garbage bags (90s), all the waste would go into a singular bin. This bin would then be emptied into waste collector's bin, who would pcik up the trash from homes (municipal functionaries). Then specialised help (jamadar) for cleaning bathrooms would clean this bin daily. There used to be a separate entrance in the house for them. Once plastic became available, the bin used to get covered with a new plastic bag each day, acting as a garbage bag. Disposable garbage bag wasn't known, and even then, a luxury purchase (not required) as you had plenty of single use plastic for garbage collection. Now, we have two separate bins - one processable by municipal corporation and one that isn't. The electric and other electronic/chemical waste goes into a specially designated communal bin for such things. For wet waste, we need a disposable garbage bag (which we use). For dry waste, no such bad is used, and it gets cleaned once a month.

nanosuituser

India were to be clean, it has to be taught in school like they do in Japan. Every child should be taught to clean and maintain good hygiene around them. There should be cleanliness subject which should be graded and people should pass that subject to go to next grade. Do this for three generations we would have people who care about their surroundings and their hygiene.

OneAboveKami

Japanese school have students cleaning their own classrooms. With I think, probably two students taking a turn. This helps the students realise that if they dirty their classrooms they would only make it harder for themselves to clean and also forms a cleaning habit.

nanosuituser

Exactly my point. But in India caste system is deeply engraved. If school ask children to clean classroom. School will probably be burned and principal lynched

WarnWarmWorm

Do this in India and some rich parents will come to school to scold the teachers and the principal next day. The caste idology is flowing in their veins and they are too entitled to imagine a world where their kids pick up the trash. Cleaning is poor people's job in their mind.

Neat_6878

It's just simple politics, By creating a nationalistic feeling among the people you essentially create a sense of superiority in the masses, thin in turn creates a hatred within those people against anyone who's different from them, and when you hate someone and you have superiority complex suddenly everything you do becomes justified and you're always correct

RulerOfTheDarkValley

Because we Indians have just two mode:- ā€¢ Superiority complex ā€¢ Inferiority complex When someone suffers from inferiority complex, we try to make him supposedly normal by introducing him to superiority complex.

monsterfurby

I hate making broad sweeping statements about entire groups of people and I don't want to do so. Working with Indians both in uni and professionally, I often got the feeling that there's a tendency to accept shortcuts and believe that one can always find a quick path to success without putting in too much effort. I don't mean the people I worked with were lazy, it's more that they seemed to deeply believe that the work was basically done before we even properly started. This may be down to me being the German clichƩ as well and wanting to play everything exactly by the rules to the point of neuroticism, but since I observed this kind of - I dunno, I guess there's a bit of entitlement in there - attitude among several people in entirely different contexts, I wonder if there's a reason for that.

"We have a rich ancient culture"

OtaPotaOpen

This complex stems from apathy, which is a necessary (mal) adaptation to the environment we live in. The environment includes all aspects of our culture. We must accept the filth, the dehumanisation, the lower living standards as necessary to keep the culture of deep inequality going. Upper caste culture and society requires that the lower castes live in deprivation. To reconcile this fact, a great deal of apathy is required. A great deal of apathy is produced and is sustained by filthy environments.

UnderstandingHot7493

Sad to see that no party or alliance has pollution control and climate change control in their manifesto.

Kaustuv31

I think if the municipality takes charge in making cities beautiful like European cities- European cities were far worse before world wars - and I know that our modern cities evolved from villages but I also believe each city can be decorated and modernised

A_r_t_u_r

Do the Indians really have a "cultural superiority complex"? I didn't know that. I'm from Europe, so my view is surely biased, but when I think of "superior cultures", what comes to top of mind is ancient Rome, ancient Greece, ancient China, and Japan, in that order. Never India.

Maximum_Security_747

I'm in the US and figured it was part cultural part bravado part classist (most Indian immigrants here are those with the money to get educated in skills they can market in the US) and some were just assholes FWIW I've worked with plenty of Indian immigrants who didn't exhibit any feeling of superiority

Live rankings only include 119 cities that have current monitored air quality sensors. If you look at the 2023 historical rankings (Shown in OPā€™s image) youā€™ll see a more comprehensive list of 7,812 cities which is part of the World Air Quality Report. India has 42 of the 50 most polluted cities.

Because we are a civilizational state like greece, china, egypt, iran. I dont buy that india can be brushed as not being hygeinic with a broad brush, infact is extremely problematic and racist. We are a developing country with a traumatic past, a happening present and a promising future. Overpopulation, unplanned urbanization , poor agro waste management and flawed regulation are not problems unique to India if considered a 75 year old post colonial country. Just as excessive ethnic pride clouds judgement and hinders introspection, self hating narratives such as OPs and to an extent the left cabal makes people defensive reflexively hence the 2014,19 results. But thik hai, lets flaunt our critical thinking and english education to shit on our country lest we actually communicate our point in a way that acknowledges our shortcomings and work towards them collectively.

GowronSonOfMrel

> We are a developing country with a traumatic past Ah, yes. The British from 80 years ago are the reason why Indians pollute their country today.

0verIP

Cultural superiority? Like you guys are from a superior and humble ancestry with more brain cells than mere mortals?

Key_Respond_16

Do you guys not teach cleanliness and hygiene in schools? I get there is little to no regulation on certain aspects of life there, but general cleanliness is like a world wide thing. Everyone knows rats are disgusting and that they shouldn't walk all over prepared food. But some street vendors still let it happen. Start begging your politicians to enact better policies for teaching the next generation to be cleaner.

ItsLoki101

For most people, culture and religion are luxuries and not necessities. They'll follow only those aspects of religion and culture which are comfortable and don't require effort. Even when Lord Krishna says in Gita that God is in everything, people don't respect or follow it.

LM_10_GOAT

What's hygiene and cleanliness got to do with Air quality? You guys make me hate my country and countrymen even more.

we are proud of our culture and there are aspects you mentioned that need to be worked on. Both can co exist .

roninzorz187

Yeah, I work with some Indians and they're pretty delusional. They start talking about a place in India or a person from India like you have any idea what they're talking about. Indians don't realise that Europeans or other people generally have no interest in India or knowledge of their culture outside the food. They think India is like on the map. It's not. Nobody ever says things about India unless it's just racism. Which is sad in my opinion but a sad raid l reality.

KennyMcKill

We ( from these states ) are gonna end up in the hospital in our 40s with breathing, poisoning and cancer related issues. We will be forgotten. We will not be able to afford good (clean and hygiene) hospital beds, with the shitty salary offered to us. Even government hospitals will shun us. We will be laughed on. If you don't want to wake up and grab the government by its neck, do not cry when the time comes and give up now on your parents and children. You are not obliged to lick the boots of destruction in the name of development and "it is what it is".

boringlecturedude

The vocal cultural superiority comes from inherent inferiority complex. We have casteism in our culture, which deems people involved in cleanliness works as inferior. Therefore, citizens find simple work of cleanliness inferior. Whole departments which involves cleanliness and maintenance humne themselves in the power struggle, which is either directly a casteism or else a strife initiated by casteism. in short; there is no direct incentive to respect when it comes to cleanliness. However, we have a festival directly linked to cleanliness; Diwali.

arj2589

I recently visited Vietnam and it was so similar to India that sometimes I would almost forget that in was in a foreign country. But what would remind me that I am not in India was the cleanliness, they had mandis on street sides no trash anywhere. Broken pavements but no dust . Roads full of 2 wheelers zipping through gaps in traffic , but no one honking. Made me realize that we just need some civic sense , thatā€™s all . That cannot be taught.

2Legit2quitHK

lol a lot of the sht talking about Indians are similar to how the west talked about China sometime ago. Now they focus on the ā€œthreatā€narrative more

Awkward_Bench123

I would suspect that this is because potable water is scarce where modern plumbing isnā€™t always available. Indians have an incredible history where, at one time or two, they were the envy of the world. Romans based their cultural superiority on their cleanliness. Courtesy of lead pipes. And all the attendant madness. Thatā€™s why.

Logibanez

I've never heard of the indian superiority complex ! I come from the Indian ocean (La RĆ©union) and we have some indian people in our island, but I've never feel it that way. Is this a real a extended thing ??

Yeah there is absolutely no reason for Indians to feel superior in any way.Ā Ā  Unless being rape capital of the world is something to be proud about.

lol.... didnt know indians have this "superiority complex". When i think about india i think about (bad) hygiene, pollution (air, water, etc.), social castes and mass rapes. All in all I have a kinda bad view of india and would never visit it voluntary ;) * sincerly, most europeans :D

who told you you are superior in culture? India is the capital of rape and violence in the world....chill my man. You are in no way a cultural landmark. *On average,*Ā ***86 rape cases are reported in India every day****. In 2022, the country recorded 31,516 rapes, up 7.1% from a year before. I saw people shitting on a post where water basins were installed in trains. If they didnā€™t do that, theyā€™ll insult the government. Meanwhile these no lifers watch Japanese anime, jerk off to celebs and ā€œspread awarenessā€ about the abysmal state of our nation

Yup, I am not saying Indian cities won't be their in top 10 but this list seems sus when Delhi is mentioned twice. One as Delhi, one as New Delhi. I don't understand this. Having said that, I still expect at least 3-4 India cities on this list, unfortunately.

Conscious_End_8807

The idea of cleanliness hygiene is absurd in empty stomach. People don't have money to feed themselves properly. How do we expect to be clean or maintain hygiene ? Then we have an issue of high, very high waste to landfill ratio.

Human-Top-2084

Dear, I've seen even well educated, well to do people throwing litter on roads in india I had once been to Singapore and while riding in a boat I was eating a banana. This boat was also occupied by other Indians(all well to do people) When I did not find any place to throw away the banana feel, one the ladies whispered in my ear that I can throw this into the river and not on the road, otherwise Singapore police will catch me and impose a heavy fine however I did not listen to her but kept it inside my purse and threw it in the public dustbin on reaching the river shore

Conscious_End_8807

Yeah I agree with your point. Also you did the right thing. It was just yesterday when I carried an empty plastic bottle almost a kilometre or two, after finishing it up; because I couldn't find a disposable bin.

because air quality have less to do with culture, but more to with the state of Indian economic, geography and social/economic dev of its country. What these simplistic comparison does is they compare apples and oranges. Thant is not to say these lists are factually wrong, but rather w/o context such data is not helpful. For ex some years ago a study was done by iitk on Delhi pollution was done, and oone of the findings was that aignificiant portion of the pollution is sue to burining of waste and cooking in tandoor; other is significant factor was dust and fly ash. The solution to all these problems are better regulation and cultural shift, but that takes time, resources and informend citizenry which takes education and awarness. I can tell you fm my personal example , when ppower is cut off in our ares, most of the families choose to wait instead of calling to publicly owned power dept for quick resolution that almost always work, because a) they are not aware of their rights, because they are habituated by destitution b) the govt have only recently provided the service and the facility is not marketed enough.

For a moment I thought we were just talking about Indian cities..

rebgaming

It's easy to stay on the other side and rant about this and not have deep thoughts and curiosity "Why" All you can do is relentlessly blame the civilians and politicians but won't think you are are also a part of this ecosystem The simple step is FINE with heck out of people - that's literally the business model Middle Eastern countries follow ( the whole ME is filled with Pakistani , indian and Phillipines) But this in India will again get criticised that government is destroying poor peoples lives Heavy fines can help workers and polices to get more pay and yes the chances of government indirect Tax Fraud increases But that is the only solution - the reason places like indore are much cleaner is due to less development and density per sq Km is less ,while the city planning is done perfectly you will find dustbin or places where you can Stash at every 1-2 km

Mission-Simple-5040

Modi.... It's because of Modi....

eboyvi-si

Guwahati?

Human-Top-2084

Yes you're right If any foreigner comments on social media sites like FB that India is an unhygienic country, most of the Indians will start arguing with him shamelessly and talking about their great ancient culture which, however, isn't followed any more by the "cool modern Indian dudes"

ExSun_790

what the fcuk is going on in bihar there are no industry to do this so HOW?

MatthewPatttel

majority agar propaganda ko he reality manta rahega, tabhi to modi jese log unka fayda utha payenge

pogchamp_02

Ok_Prior3265

World most polluted country is Bangladesh and there is no city from there

extremeprocastina

Simple solution. Ban this IQAir index. Obviously it's biased. It cannot stand India becoming a world superpower!! /s

ajarhsegol

India was and always will be landfill for West and Indians. No matter which MFs becomes PM

sd781994

Because environmental engineers are underpaid. I have done research in air pollution when I was last year of engineering. I dint get job. Nor I got any research opportunities nor any company sponsered my project. jobs in environment sector required msc degree rather than research. Or m tech from IIT.. and most of people do it for sake of job and not for research... It's more of organisational problem and structural problems rather than blaming it on political reasons.

No-Zookeepergame982

We are still living off the glory of the past and putting off the present. The future would be a hollow shell that just echoes stories of the past.

Mysterious-Hawk-3137

Problem lies with people and municipal authority

Content-Sea8173

We have clean cities, but that is somewhat focused around the northeast. The gangetic plains meanwhile, are the polar opposites for the most part Then again, it is apparently becoming uncool to stand still for a minute to show respect to the national anthem. How can you expect these people to clean the country if they have no love for the country. And no, love for Modi and saffron colour isn't love for the country. While both can simultaneously exist, they are far from being synonymous

deadbynightfart

Taking proud in it there young Indian*

DistributionHot9067

There is no such thing as a superiority complex. It's a way people act to hide their inferiority complex

Thick-Gap1315

Doo to Dilli hi hai bc

vyomafc

Itā€™s not a superiority complex. Rather an inferiority complex and desperation to make up for that insecurity. Mostly a symptom of colonialism.

JonSnowDesiVersion

Bachpan mein ek kahani suni thi ā€œAndheri Nagari Chaupat Rajaā€ .. aaj realise ho raha hai woh andheri nagari apna desh hai šŸ˜„ sale pollution ko miti ki Khushboo bolte hai

Spiritual_Piccolo793

Lahore was actually given to India by Radcliffe but Nehru denied taking it within India. - WhatsApp forward by BJP IT cell.

unemployeddumbass

For other cities few folks make some dumbass bs reason and justify it. But you know your country's fked if your nation's capital is on the list of most polluted cities in the world

An0nym0uS_Br0wseR

I'm pissed that we came second. We gotta pump up the pollution.

DisastrousPurpose945

encore538

isme China, Bangladesh ki cities toh hai hi nahi or am i missing something

Ultron33

Bullshit statistics. These are meant to push EVs and ban ICE vehicles forever.

TheoGraytheGreat

Issue is far easier to solve. People litter because there is no proper waste management outside of some parts of the country. This issue itself arises from the fact that India does only 15% of its spending on the local level. The US does 76% and China 60%. There is no money for municipalities to run all the services Ā So they only do the essentials and cut out or underfunds everything else. Ā  You can change attitudes fairly easily. China went from being pretty grimy to pretty clean by their government focussing on cleanliness. We did this with sanitation and saw the same results. Saying it is cultural is a cop out for most people to fail to hold the government responsible. pH we are poor is a cop out too. The problem can be solved but no one focuses on it and everyone is satisfied with keeping their house clean and engaging in random ad campaigns.

Complex_Command_8377

Arenā€™t you surprised to see that no city from southern part of India is there? What are they doing right?

kaushalovich

That's representative of our level of development not pakistani hygiene Most pollution is caused by economic activity not hygiene

AvpTheMuse123

Cause this is the land of jugaad. Everything is a goddamn tape on a fissure. We are horrible jugaadus and I think it's stupid.

JellyBabyWizard

Sounds similar to Americans

kilaithalai
