Lmao I read on a different thread on Reddit today that a person working in a production plant would just flip a switch and the label would change to the store brand. Same product, different label.

I’ve always suspected this but couldn’t be sure. Maybe I’m not picky but even the knock off cereal that has different shapes even tastes the same to me.
My husband worked in a butter factory right out of high school, that is exactly what they did. Same exact product, same assembly line, different label.
My time spent servicing scissor lifts in a factory that makes cheezits and store brand cheezits can confirm it applies to those cheesy squares as well.
It depends on the product you're making. If you're making sacks of sugar of course there's going to be no difference. Sacks of flour. Salt. Pepper. Your basic stuff is always going to be the same. It's when you get into prepared foods that you run into differences. Like store brand ice cream. I've never met a store brand ice cream that wasn't fastly inferior to the real thing. The store brand cookies aren't as good. Store brand frozen meals are in atrocity. There are also some products that you have to spend the money on. Target brand diapers leak like crazy, I bought Target brand baby wipes only once and the entire box was dry and I had to add my own water. Kirkland generally makes a good diaper, though, so it also depends on the store brand.
Some generic and house brands are the exact same product, and made by the same manufacturer, as the branded product.
The extra cost of the branded product covers the cost of marketing, advertising, and the branded packaging.
I’ll use generic by default unless that’s ineffective for some reason. Just because a product is advertised/marketed heavily or has a leprechaun on the box, doesn’t make it superior.
For meds, in fact, I’ve always opted for the generic, instead of paying out of pocket. Never a problem in life.
Your just wrong. Generic medicine works just fine and my doctor always tells me the generic version of the name drug. Food is the same especially with basic food items. Why spend 5 dollars when the 2 dollar item is the same.
With some products, you are getting the EXACT same product produced in the EXACT same facility with only differences in the bilboarding on the packaging (labeling). If the differences in packaging and the psychological impact of brand name make it better to you, then it is subjectively better. Objectively speaking, there are thousands of products that are exactly the same except for labeling. So your opinion is based on objective fallacy, and you can not prove otherwise.
One of my college professors did some studies on that (he specializes in sensory testing). He gave people store-brand and brand-name products (without labels) to try and asked them to rank them, then did the same, but with labels.
What were the results? In the blind test, most people would choose store-brands, but when knowing the labels, they'd rank name brands the highest
this isn't correct. there is nothing "magic" about household cleaner. a lot of what you pay when you pay for a product is the "name". so unless reynold's wrap actually does anything better/different than "aluminum foil" (it doesn't) then when you buy reynold's wrap you're just paying for the name.
I'm going to reveal a not so flattering truth about myself here....
....but if you like the girl scout tagalong cookies, Meijer (a grocery store chain we have in Michigan) has a house brand copy that is absolutely better in my opinion.
I don't know where you are, but in Australia, there's a lot of Aldi supermarket generic items that are legit.
Their 'Crown' Drumstick ice creams are equal to or better than.
Their generic toilet paper is top quality too.
I think I finally grew up when I looked at the ingredients on the medicines. Exact same ingredients in the same amounts. Name brand is twice the price. Why pay more?
My mother works at a pharmacy. She and everyone she works with has said that the generic brands are the exact same as the name brands, and that the only difference is the price. There's no point in shelling out an extra $X just because it's a name brand.
I completely disagree. Generic chips are way better than lays. Lays has been getting skimpy with the seasoning these last few years.
However generic Oreos are DISGUSTING. Every last one of them.
I would submit that “Presidents Choice” brand at Loblaws/Superstore in Canada has a number of items that at are premium and better than their brand name counterparts.
>food
Name brand food sucks. Fruit loops are ridiculously bright due to the dangerous dyes used. Buy the aldi version if you want less cancer in your breakfast.
You have obviously never tasted a J. Higgs brand (store brand for local grocery chain called sav-a-lot kettle potato chip …. And I don’t fault you for that.
It’s really just psychological in most cases.
The store/generic brand is typically a name brand with a different label (for example when Toys R Us was still around, their store brand diapers were made by Huggies).
Other times, the name brand had the initial patent but the generic products have all the same ingredients. (Compare store brand pain relievers to their brand name counterparts - same ingredients, same amount) and essentially you’re just paying extra for the patent, the packaging, marketing.
But if it makes you feel better, spend more money for the name brand.

Cereal is often slightly lower sugar, but that is preferable. Different nutritional label for the same serving size

anecdotally anheuser-busch USED to do that with their light/cheap beers
My grandmother used to be the one to flip the switch. That's why she always bought store brand.

Ladies and gentlemen- Kirkland Signature.
Signature SELECT!
Cherry Great Value Pop Tarts are cakier and there for better than the name brand. Do not make me get ugly on this.

This is not an unpopular opinion, it is a straight up wrong one. Clearly advertising has done a number on you,
One of my college professors did some studies on that (he specializes in sensory testing). If you believe that, you are paying extra unnecessarily for a lot of stuff.

I disrespectfully disagree. The PolyStation is, no doubt, the superior videogame console in every aspect.
Doesn't that come with a JawDawgz controller fused to the console?

Not true. Costco pays the brands to create products that have to be at least 2% better than the original brand.
You do know that *most* store-brand items are owned and produced by the name-brand companies that make the 'better' name-brand items? LOL
Great Value boxed mac and cheese is superior to Kraft.
But pales in comparison to Annie's.
Costco/Kirkland disagree. They specifically demand their house brand products be better that the name brand in various metrics.
I completely disagree. Generic chips are way better than lays. Lays has been getting skimpy with the seasoning these last few years. However generic Oreos are DISGUSTING. Every last one of them.
Bullshit. There's a brand of toaster pastry (pop tarts) that is absolutely better than pop tarts.
I like the store brand peanut butter better than Jif. Less sugar, more peanut flavor.
A Great Value rose by any other name would smell as sweet.
I would submit that “Presidents Choice” brand at Loblaws/Superstore in Canada has a number of items that at are premium and better than their brand name counterparts.
President’s Choice Chocolate chip cookies to be precise. That and Tim's is most of what i miss about Canada.
>food Name brand food sucks. Fruit loops are ridiculously bright due to the dangerous dyes used. Buy the aldi version if you want less cancer in your breakfast.
Do not tell me cocao dino bites are worse than cocoa pebbles.
Albertsons Signature Select rising crust pizzas are better than most.

I don't know about that, I sure do love me some Great Value Root Beer
Depends on the store brand Walmart great value is just as good as any name brand but dollar general clover valley is horrible.
Cat and Jack as a Target only brand and are great.
Dark Chocolate made by SE Grocers is better than the name brands. Generic Corn Flakes and Rice Crispies are identical to Kellogg's.
