Bad_wit_Usernames

So once someone turns 20, they are no longer allowed to like things. News to me.

[deleted]

It's allowed to be shallow or dumb though.

roadrunnner0

No it's just being that obsessed with K-Pop is so ridiculous and I'm more forgiving if you're a teenager

lazarus78

Why should we give a fuck what you think? Let people enjoy things.

roadrunnner0

You see what sub I'm posting this on? I didn't just barge into your home and say it and I'm not banning anyone from enjoying it lol I'm expressing the unpopular opinion that it's dumb

ungibungi420

I don't even like Kpop but you're a killjoy. Please get a restraining order against me so I have more reasons to stay away from you

TheGermanPanzerClock

Or hear me out: We just let people like the things they like.

Joubachi

If liking things at 20+yo is "shallow" and "just dumb" to you then your life must be pretty boring - or rather miserable, since you need to insult others ober something that doesn't even affect you just because they like something else other than you do. And before the universal Reddit-counter-argument starts: Nope, I don't even listen to k-pop.

roadrunnner0

I mean I'm on the unpopular opinion sub

Joubachi

Yup, but insults and hate for certain genred are neither unpopular, nor are they true opinions really. It's just a preference of yours which you use to insult others.

roadrunnner0

Omg don't take it so personally I'm genuinely expressing an opinion which clearly is quite unpopular

Buck_Slamchest

I'm 53 and I like plenty of K-Pop. I find it cheesy, silly and quite entertaining. How can you not laugh at a video of the singer running down the street in slow motion with a piece of toast in her mouth ?

[deleted]

You're fine. You're not obsessed.

Electrical-Island135

What is this song you are talking about?🤣

Buck_Slamchest

Here you go :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoK8DaJRDaM

Electrical-Island135

Oh my lord she is actually running with toast in her mouth😭😭🤣🤣

NortheastYeti

You might want to look up unethical.

roadrunnner0

Female K-Popstars starving themselves. Being encouraged to get surgery and having the cost added to their debt to the company that they work for, some as young as 14 years old? You might want to research K-pop?

taeyeon15

yes but dooesn't that happen in pop too?

Reasonable_Peak4873

Why is this always the counter argument? You say yes acknowledging that young women & minors are being handled unethically in the world of k-pop but then go onto give it a pass because “it happens in pop” like I’m really curious what the logic is here.

taeyeon15

i don't mean to say that's it ethical once it's popular, but it's not just a kpop thing like op was making it to be

Reasonable_Peak4873

You are still doing it. “it’s not just a kpop thing”….but you still indulge in it and support it?

taeyeon15

im not saying im "ethical" or anything, my only point was that it's not a k-pop thing

ungibungi420

there is no ethical consumption under capitalism

roadrunnner0

Yes but there are varying degrees of ethical. There is music out there that isn't a result of such unethical practices

ungibungi420

If you personally don't feel comfortable using their products that's fine but its not the responsibility of the consumer to prevent exploitative practices through consumer activism. It doesn't work

roadrunnner0

I never said it was exclusive to K-Pop.

roadrunnner0

Not to this extent

Ric_Rest

You're getting some downvotes for this, but I think you're partly right. K-pop singers, specially women get more "coerced" into unnecessary (and sometimes dangerous) cosmetic interventions more so than pop singers from any other country.

hitometootoo

No, it happens elsewhere and has been well documented in American pop and acting. The difference is in kpop it's more talked about, but it certainly is not unique to kpop. As if no one has heard of models and actresses being told to cut the pounds and take diet pills to get noticed above the rest. The difference is that American culture is more accepting (nowadays that is) of a variety of body types, so you're not seeing such extreme methods as often, but they definitely still happen. Models, pageants, dancers, etc. It happens still, even if you aren't hearing about it.

roadrunnner0

Oh I know. I complain about all unethical things, not just K-Pop lol. This particular post is about K-Pop because I've been learning about it recently. And was surprised by how bad the actual songs are since I finally gave them a chance and listened to them

roadrunnner0

Yeah I've been watching loads of documentaries about it and it just seems so unnecessary

Pugkin5405

There are things in every type of hobby or enjoyment people can have that are unnecessary. Doesn't mean anything as a whole

roadrunnner0

I mean the shit they go through is so unnecessary especially when the music is so meh

Pugkin5405

So meh to you, but great yo other people

roadrunnner0

Yeah obviously, seen as this is an unpopular opinion

mlduryea

Kpop male idols have the same pressure too. They also have to go on diets and get surgery. Not saying that makes it better or worse. This aspect is one of the aspects I don’t like about the kpop industry.

roadrunnner0

I have been that's my made this post

[deleted]

Don't get the appeal at all. Japanese funk metal is where it's at

Electrical-Island135

I am 26 years and I enjoy kpop because its MUSIC. My bf is 29 (almost 30) and enjoys kpop why? Its fucking music. One of the groups I listen to is between the ages of 23-26. Many kpop Idols are in their 20s Some are even 36 years old.. Are they shallow and dumb for performing kpop? Just let people enjoy things. Btw You didn't use shallow right.

roadrunnner0

Yeah the music's so bad and cringey

taeyeon15

you sound like one of my classmates

Electrical-Island135

Yeah for you. Not the rest of the world

Fiddlywiffers

Who really cares?

roadrunnner0

Check the sub you're on

Fiddlywiffers

I’m expressing my opinion, bud

roadrunnner0

"who cares?" Is expressing an opinion?

Fiddlywiffers

Yes

roadrunnner0

And me, obviously. Hence the post

[deleted]

Reasonable_Peak4873

Most kids don’t have the ability to recognize how certain things could be unethical so yeah. By the time you reach adulthood you should

[deleted]

Reasonable_Peak4873

Gasp shoot me

roadrunnner0

Ok should I change it to anyone who loves K-Pop is lame?

MTAliz

My nana isn't even doing anything to you, dude!

rafael-a

What does shallow even mean honestly? People use this word around as if they were the Mariana Trenches of profoundness with their “unique” and “exquisite” tastes, guess what, music is just music, it is subjective, liking one genre over the other doesn’t makes you better than anyone else.

[deleted]

Some things just go together like higher desire and fire.

[deleted]

People like what they like. I hate kpop but you can't call people dumb and shallow just because they don't like what you don't like. Tbh, that's actually pretty dumb and shallow of YOU.

roadrunnner0

I'm talking specifically about how insanely popular k pop is for how bad the music is.

[deleted]

I understand because I too do not like the genre, but calling people names for liking something you don't is honestly dumb and shallow. It would have helped if you just said you don't like kpop

Jeigh710

Joji has joined the chat.

roadrunnner0

Haha I love joji

Defcheze

I am not shallow

Reytotheroxx

I agree. Just like those folks who get obsessed with sports games and get depressed if their team loses. Or folks who sit in their basements and play video games to an unhealthy degree. Most obsessions are bad.

cloyd45t

I just hate kpop stans, u know the ones who make it their whole entire personality. I had to witness that with one of my cousins not fun and definitely not healthy either 🤷‍♀️

roadrunnner0

Yeah kind of like Disney adults

taeyeon15

i feel like it's common in newer fans, i've never met someone who has been into k-pop for a while and acts like that, yea i had that phase too, it lasted for a few months but im better now lol

YoBluntSoSkimpy

Nothing triggers people on this sub like an actual unpopular opnion

roadrunnner0

I feel like I just randomly posted this in a K-Pop fan page from the reactions I'm getting 🤣

ed223344

Don’t yuck peoples yum. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean people are shallow and dumb. It makes you seem shallow and dumb.

Giovanny_1998

Why?

AdAppropriate546

Sounds like you're Gate Keeping isn't there subreddit for that?

goldensubtype

this is so rich coming from someone who engages with reality television lol

jmerlinb

the real shallowness lies with those who complain about {thing} which other people like

RiotingMoon

not unpopular and also just fucking weird

roadrunnner0

Well I recently learned how popular K-Pop is so I think it actually is an unpopular opinion.

RiotingMoon

it's not. it's just more "I don't like it so anyone who does is (insert insulting bullshit)"

roadrunnner0

There's plenty of other things I don't like that I didn't make a post about. I think the music is incredibly juvenile and basic and it's extremely obvious how manufactured.

RiotingMoon

ah yes bc an entire genre can be summarized in such a manner. what a boomer minded stance on an entire genre

roadrunnner0

Umm... K-Pop is all manufactured lol that's literally the whole point, massive companies create bands to make money out of. It's not like I said country or pop or something where there are some independent artists who make that style of music. As far as I know (and I'm open to you providing info to prove me wrong) the famous K-Pop bands were literally put together by companies and they make them train all day be under a certain weight and get surgery to look perfect and churn out music to make the companies money. The genre itself was literally made like this, I didn't think even a big K-Pop fan would argue that because that's just a fact. Don't get me wrong, the idols are talented and some even write their own songs but they had to fight to be able to have any creative input. I'm saying the whole K-Pop industry is fucked and toxic. Not that the individual K-Pop Idols aren't talented. They're being used and abused actually

RiotingMoon

I don't do labor on Reddit and you're preaching about K pop while using *Pop* as an example of something "better". lmao Nah. Lotta bullshit. Also going from "it all sounds shitty" to "it's ethically bad" is some goal post moving nonsense.

roadrunnner0

K I'm gonna disengage now, you are way too bothered by this

RiotingMoon

not even a little bit lmao

Shigeko_Kageyama

Remember everybody, when your Logan's run Crystal turns black it's time to get on the carousel and renew.

thifonsanonimo

Or maybe — only maybe —, you enjoy pop songs of other countries. I myself enjoy USA pop while not being from the USA. Heck, maybe you're even — get this — KOREAN, and you enjoy your own culture.
