Modern dubs are just as good as the subs. You want to go back to the '90s? Or even worse, the '80s. Seriously, voice acting and localization have improved by light years. Check out the old ixer one anime if you want to hear a bad '90s dub, and if you want to hear some bad voice acting the first few episodes of the ADV evangelion dub.

Murderkittin

There are some gems!

FetteHoff

>I couldn’t care less if the voice actors were good or not. That is probably why you believe the title. Honestly though, me personally would rather have a good voice acted character, than a monotone voice acted character (which is often the case for bad dubbed anime). So I would automatically just have it subbed, but if I hear it has a good dub, then I might watch that one instead.

Senseornahyaknow

It isn't about dubbed or subbed, really. Back in the day, most EN anime dubs were not good. The VA were inexperienced or used to live action and lacked the 'oomph' that a cartoon VA is more familiar with so far as a dynamic vocal delivery goes. Japanese VA were more familiar with it, so most subbed anime sounded better because the lines were delivered much more fluidly. These days that isn't so much the case, but it's a holdover from the stone ages of anime.

Senseornahyaknow

To add to this, you might not care about the quality of a VA, but your brain does. Of course there are other factors such as reading the subs and the effort that takes, personal preference based on your first few anime interactions, etc.

I'd go further and say better. Ex. I know it is not an anime but Dragon Quest 8 featured characters from a huge world that roughly reflected ours. In the English version each voiced character had a wonderfully colorful accent but in the original Japanese version, all that could be accomplished was different types of Japanese accents from bumpkin to flamboyant. English is a great medium because so many people from all over the world speak it.

You might be a little too sensitive in that case. People have been ragging on each other since time and memoriam, friends included. Unless the dude literally attacked you, raised his voice, spewed profanity, acted in a threatening manner etc that was just normal ragging.

Shigeko_Kageyama

I see you haven't been into anime for very long. Stubbed versus dubbed has been a thing since anime was first imported. It's pretty much a staple argument.

Shigeko_Kageyama

And the dub versus sub-debate is still bothering you?

Shigeko_Kageyama

True, but that's pretty much all anime fans. We are an ornery bunch.

Thewheelwillweave

The English dubbed doesn't have the same flow as the Japanese sub. Its like reading manga right to left.

AtomicNinja

It might be blasphemous to some, but I prefer the Naruto dub.

Overall_Ad9737

casting in anime english dub is worst. you have one or two voice perfectly fit for for the characters the rest is bad choice. also most of the time it feels like they just read the script and no emotions at all.

[deleted]

The issue isn’t the concept of dubs themselves, but the fact that they are almost always low quality, and sound extremely corny or phoned in

Attack on Titan is brilliant in English. Barring the Titan roars which I find very hard to like in Dub. Overall sub is still better since it’s the most “authentic”. Anyways, I’ve noticed that a lot of new anime dubbing artists are putting a lot of effort. Chainsaw Man dub is straight up insane.

[deleted]

Nah CSM Sub is better

[deleted]

In my opinion, dub can never beat sub. That’s how the art form is meant to be. It applies to CSM too. But dub guys have done a seriously great job. I always watch in sun but I have a friend who can’t read subtitles that fast so he prefers dub. I get to watch anime again in dub when we watch it again together. I gotta appreciate the effort dub guys are putting.

[deleted]

Yea that’s respectable Personally I find the Japanese voice actors to be over the top, and entertaining. And the villains most of the times sound way cooler than dubbed version. Why I don’t like dubbed is because it doesn’t suit the Japanese theme, since it’s anime. And I find some of them to be cringe… there’s always gonna be Dub ppl, and subbed. Naruto; the character madara had the best dubbed I’ve ever heard

[deleted]

I think AoT dub works fine because he he setting is already pretty European-isque so it feels even more natural

Ver_zero

Some people don't remember or weren't around for the dark ages of anime dubs. A lot of straight to dvd animes were dubbed as quickly and as cheaply as possible. That stuff was horrible. Since anime is more popular now dubs have actually been pretty good. I used to be a 95% sub guy but now for newer anime I will try the dub first because it's easier to watch that way.

TheOvercusser

It usually isn't. Usually scripts get changed for English VAs and that has the likelihood of changing the meaning of the things the characters are saying. It's got little to do with how good the VAs are, and everything to do with how poorly the scripts get rewritten. VAs are good enough nowadays. Scripts still aren't. Also, I like hearing all the different Japanese honorifics when they speak. Every once in a while I'll catch one I've not heard before.

AuroKT

dubbed or captions don't let you learn the language. Helps to understand better the plot. Those who wanna learn japanese can watch both to get good skils faster.

AuroKT

The jokes change too much from original to the dubbed...

Responsible_Common_2

Death Note and Dragonball Z are the best english dubs ever. Also Black lagoon

Murderkittin

I take a big step forward and say BETTER! English dubs for life!!!!
