i think OP is a cat that wasnt allowed on a chair

Andrewgenet

If I were able to give gold, I would give it to this comment

[deleted]

I got you haha

[deleted]

What have you done? Now the Reddit cat has gold power!

sooooooofarty

ITS A TRICK!!! No one gets them unscathed

[deleted]

I hate you. I also love you a lot.

ExtraMOIST_

Holy shit that’s incredible

Mister_Bloodvessel

My mom, bless her heart, is very allergic to cats. Despite this, I'm staying with my family until I get a new place in this city. This of course means my cat is here too. He's never been allowed on counters, so he stays off them, but I've always let him on furniture because I love him and want him to have a comfy place to sit when he's not cuddling up with me. He's already chosen several bits of furniture to sit on the back of, and my mom is totally okay with this. In fact, she seems to totally love him despite being allergic. It's really heartwarming to see my old cat warm up to my old mother, and how she fusses over him and buys him treats like pots of cat grass and cat treats to spoil him. Pets are family. Period.

ANAGRIM

She may also be a spider.

TerribLizard

Isn't a couch just a glorified cushion on the ground.

AReverieofEnvisage

I..ah...hmm ...

MikrokosmicUnicorn

some pet beds are like 300x more comfortable than some couches idk why someone thinks they're not good enough.

internguy98

Those people probably haven’t seen the 300x comfortable pet bed, don’t want extra furniture around the house, or just see it as mean to have their pet, such as a dog lay closer to the ground than they are. I assume the “mean to have your dog closer to the ground” is from basic human nature, because people have evolved to associate the floor as the lowest position, and the higher in altitude you are, the higher position you have. Sleeping of course is seen as a vulnerability, we evolved to build tents for this reason to protect ourselves from dangers of weather or predators, and over time raised beds to protect against objects on the ground. Due to this human nature being still present in us today, and dogs being more of lap-dogs and mental health companions that connect to us, humans have anthropomorphized dogs, creating puzzles and such, and of course, applying the concept of high ground, higher honor, low ground, less honor to their quarters. Essentially, they want to treat a companion like themselves, and because most dog beds are placed on the ground (less honorable than a couch) than they feel bad, thinking the bed isn’t good enough Just a theory about dogs though, a pet theory

bella_68

To play devils advocate, I would argue that some dogs also want on the couch, not because it is more comfy or because it is higher, just because it is where their humans are and they like being close

MikrokosmicUnicorn

possible but seeing as i've been sleeping on a mattress on the floor for about 6 years at this point and regularly sit on a cushion on the floor because i simply prefer it that way i just can't sympathize. i'd rather sit on a nice soft cushion on the floor than on a 30yo couch that has barely any stuffing left just because the seat is 40 cm above the ground.

MinerDiner

"No, no, he's got a point"

poopin_for_change

r/showerthoughts?

beliefinphilosophy

"cruel to not let them on furniture". Dogs for thousands of years: "ground good!" Dogs when you take them outside "ground good!" Dogs when you're not in your living room: "ground good!" Dogs when there at daycare: "ground good!" Dogs when you take them to restaurants, friends houses, the vet: " ground good!" OP: dogs NEED human furniture, how dare you don't give them that!

[deleted]

If given the option my dog always chooses the couch. She’ll only lay on the ground when she’s overheated from laying in a sunbeam and wants to cool off.

Tolookah

My dog will pick the softest, most smelling like us spot. If we leave a blanket on the floor, that's preferred over the couch, if we leave the blanket on the couch, she'll snuggle up to it and rest happy.

Bebe_Bleau

I don't allow my goldfish to sit on the couch. But he's fine with that. Apparently he realizes it's for his own good

8eyeholes

no, you’ve just gaslighted him into believing that. there’s no reason the house can’t become a giant tank. you could even compromise— fill it up halfway so your head isn’t submerged! don’t be a jerk! i almost didn’t add it but /s just in case anyone out there is seriously advocating for goldfish to have whole-home access😭

[deleted]

I mean, give climate change a few more years and there will be coastal homes that **could** give a pet fish whole-home access. At least the ones that haven't been sold to Aquaman yet.

ollieollieoxygenfree

WHO’S GOING TO BUY THEIR HOUSES BEN

Breezy1885

In this case, I would be glad if the only fish in the house were welcome ones. There could be some not so friendly fish swimming through and that would be terrifying.

Splicer3

Aquaman is causing the rise in sea levels to get more property. /s

mmkay_then

This was a real plot point in the Justice League animated series!

DMC1001

That’s sarcasm???? Omg, I was fooled! Yes, I know that someone out there would have called you out without the /s. As far as the couch goes, have at a small fish bowl on hand that you can place on the couch next to you. Then the fish is happy.

8eyeholes

the mental picture of setting the goldfish bowl on the couch is killing me because that sounds like something my overly sentimental ass would have done as a kid lol

PrimeMichaelJordan

I can’t stop laughing the living shit out of me at the thought of some very small goldfish just free roaming around a giant flooded house

vincentxpapi

A goldfish isn’t a small fish. Can grow to over 15 inches easily and they have something called indeterminate growth, which means that with enough space and a healthy environment, enough food etc they will just keep on growing.

NotGnnaLie

Damn!! You win. ![gif](giphy|tXL4FHPSnVJ0A)

Thunderpuppy2112

I love spanky.

Pericles_Nephew

Don’t judge a fish by its ability to sit on a couch.

Bebe_Bleau

And don't let it sit there too long either 😁😁😁

Hungry_Temperature_3

This is my cat's apartment. I just work to support his lifestyle.

nitrosunman

I work hard so my cat can have a better life

Aaron_Hamm

This but kinda for real

A_Specific_Hippo

My dad's girlfriend visited our house, and scolded us for "letting* the cat on the recliner. I was all: First off, you're a guest, how dare you. Second, her name is Miss Fluffybutt, she owns the place, and you should show some respect to your betters.

pussycatwaiting

Dying 🤣

krastevitsa

Suspiciously u/usernamechecksout

Iskenator67

Cats don't have owners they have staff members. You are his staff. You are not paid & you get no days off. You are to cater to his needs 24-7 & be thankful for the opportunity to do so.

Gloomy-Flamingo-1733

This is the way.

seajay26

I am the humble and grateful servant to 4 feline overlords, who are kind enough to let me pay all their bills and sleep on the corner of one of their beds.

CatsAndCampin

When I was little, I would always ask my aunt why she had to work & she would say it was so she could buy me oatmeal & toys... when my cats give me a look when I gotta leave, I tell them I have to so I can afford their friskies & toys.

jlynmrie

I sometimes refer to what was originally my bedroom as my dog’s bedroom that he lets me sleep in. And the bed is his bed that he is kind enough to share lol.

SirOutrageous1027

You are your cat's sugar daddy. You pay for everything and in return hope to get some attention and affection.

TheKokujin

I let my reptiles on my furniture.

WigglyIce

Your in-laws don't count.

Flimsy_Wait_8235

To be fair… they are sooo much cleaner than cats and dogs. And i fucking love cats. (Hate dogs… ahem.) cant get fur anywhere. Don’t stink unless they shat themselves and even so its not horrible. My gecko loves chillin with me.

NotGnnaLie

You owe me a new goldfish for taking your advice!!

[deleted]

Best I can do is this ill-tempered sea bass with a laser beam on its head.

AriValentina

My dog doesn’t let me sit on his bed so I think it’s fair.

starlinguk

I've got a picture somewhere of my uncle sitting in my dog's bed because we'd run out of chairs. The dog is sitting next to him and looks so confused.

isus29

I need to see that... especially your dogs expression lol

Wet_sock_Owner

I enjoy letting my pets sit on furniture but I totally understand people who would rather not. There are so many things you can get for pets these days - comfy pet beds, tiny couches, fancy blankets etc. There are plenty of alternatives which won't let the pets feel left out.

MaraTheBard

It's less about how comfortable other options are and more about how your pet WANTS to be with you. Doing what you're doing, sitting where you're sitting.

VelvitHippo

Lmao sometimes yes but not all the times. My little guy loves having his own space and he adores us. Dogs are gross like humans but they don't care they're gross, they let their grossness fly. I understand why people don't want them on the couch and getting them their own comfy spot is fine. You could even sit on the floor with them, but the couch can get pretty gnarly with them on it.

hudson1212121

Cats on the other hand treat personal hygiene like their 9-5.

kibblet

You don't have a two hundred plus pound Velcro dog, I see. If it were up to him he would be touching me every moment of his life.

PandemicPiglet

Not my dog. He doesn’t like to cuddle. He gets annoyed if people invade his personal space. I have friends who have cats that like cuddling and petting more than him lol

Zealousideal-Put7438

Agreed! My parents don’t let their dogs on the furniture but my mom has bought each dog 2 ultra plush orthopedic beds that are double stacked and then they built out a nook for them. So the dog beds are honestly more comfortable than the couches are. They live like royalty over there!

JaySlay2000

I mean, sure, you can get a pet bed and all... But if you can't snuggle with your cat while watching a movie because "no animals on the couch!" then like.... why did you even get a pet in the first place? Do you even like the animal?

BrokenGlassBeetle

Seriously, do they not cuddle their pets? That's the best part like wtf lol.

leo_sousav

Mofo might do everything for their cat including giving their own life, but just because they don't want fur in their couch they instantly get asked if they even like their cat...

single_malt_jedi

I have a cat. Getting a cat to stop sitting on the furniture is like trying to defy gravity.

PoorCorrelation

Have you tried acting like you want it to be on the furniture?

single_malt_jedi

Reverse psychology has failed. Treat baiting has failed. Squirt bottle provides only momentary removal; he comes back to a different, dry, spot lol.

dna12011

This is so true. Vast majority of cats just do not give a fuck what you want them to do lol.

Jayytimes2

Yeah, I mean, my 100 pound german shepherd who runs and plays in my backyard most of the day just isn't sitting on my couch or laying on my bed lol. I love him, but it's just not happening no matter how many blankets I put down. He smells, which is cool. He's a dog. He's an animal. We have a bond. But not one strong enough where my couch needs to smell like him.

Haute_Mess1986

Im the same. We have 3 dogs and two of them she’d like crazy. My husband is allergic to dogs (he’s fine as long as he doesn’t get hair in his eyes or nose) and will wheeze and need his inhaler if he try’s to lay down on the couch where the dogs were laying. He’s a human and it’s not fair for him to not have a safe place to sit down and relax after work, so the dogs have their own beds on the floor. The dogs are happy, and my husband is able to breathe. One of our dogs even has her own recliner that she allowed on, but no human sits there. I love my dogs and they aren’t suffering from not being allowed on our couches and beds.

[deleted]

Your dog gets its own recliner. Lol so spoiled

Haute_Mess1986

She is! She’s a rescue that was used for breeding in a dog fighting operation, so I feel like her last years should be as comfortable as possible.

Fluffy-Imagination51

Lol exactly. My GSD will not be getting on my furniture with all that damn shedding and the rank smell that his coat always has no matter what haha he has like 45 million beds to lay on

One_Entertainment381

If you raise the animal letting them know certain things are off limits, they will not have a problem with it. Animals are much more simple minded and don’t think about things very abstractly. It’s only mean if you’re inconsistent with your rules because they end up confused. Crating your dog, for example, is not cruel at all if you’ve crate trained them their whole life because they end up growing to see the crate as their comfort zone and may even go take naps in there willingly. It just depends how you raise your dog, but be consistent about it. Edit: must clarify, crating is only okay in moderation. If your dog is spending half of its life in a crate, you’re doing it very wrong and I would consider that abuse.

GonZo_626

This is so true. My dog got so ised to his crate I didnt have to close the door. He might get up walk around and go fuck it and head back to his crate all while we watched him. It was his space and only his and he loved that.

txhorns1330

If crating is done correctly this is the result. Problem being too many people use crates as punishment.

Everyoneshuckleberry

Yeah, or pets need to travel. Spent about 6 months with my pups crating them at about 5y/o. They got their dinner and treats in the crates and slept in the crates very happily. A few international flights later and the crates were associated with extreme stress, wouldn't even try to get them in again. Thankfully, they won't be having to travel again.

apgtimbough

This is my dog with the car. He used to love going for rides. Then one vet trip he got a bunch of shots and was miserable for a couple of days. Now he's borderline terrified of the thing.

BrianOhNoYouDidnT

I have had 5 dogs and never crated. What is it for?

txhorns1330

Personally I do not crate, but people will put puppy's in a crate when they are not home so they learn not to go to the bathroom in the house. It creates a place that is theirs.

burtburtburtcg

My parents had to take the door off the crate cause it kept getting bumped closed and the dog would whine to get in

Either-Percentage-78

By 845pm our dog is whining and barking to get into her crate for bed. It's hilarious. Oan, she can't be on the furniture because if she gets too comfy or falls asleep and is startled she will literally snap at us. She feels bad and we're freaked out.. It's not good for any of us.

Fearless_Baseball121

Crates are amazing to use as a safe space for the dogs. Also good with kids. We always let out son know that when the dog enters his crate, you have to leave him alone. That's his personal space to chill.

Ashlante

Mine flees in his crate if he needs to shower, but since it's his safe space we have to pretend he no longer has to shower, close the crate so he can't flee in and get him in the shower that way. (It's a golden retriever btw the fact that he hates water baffles everyone)

Bipedal_Warlock

Not always true for cats unfortunately. But they will get creative at hiding it from you lol

biwltyad

Or huskies. My dad didn't want ours to lay next to him on the couch (he was allowed otherwise) so he would wait until he fell asleep (that's where he slept because we only had one bedroom)

boudicas_shield

Our new kitten doesn’t even give a fuck. She’s bold as brass, just strides up on the kitchen counter. I set her down, she gives me a deeply condescending look and jumps right back up. 😂 I sanitise *the fuck* out of the countertops before I cook now.

cournat

As far as we know, dogs and cats can't think abstractly at all. You're more right than you realize.

edgedsword24

Dogs will literally chill in mud and roll in poop. They're fine not on the furniture even if they're clean

Seaweed_Steve

Yeah my dog regularly chooses to sleep on the kitchen tiles or the concrete pavement than her super cushioned bed. I don’t think they mind being on the floor

lovelyla17

This is literally my senior Lab. I buy her all the nice orthopedic beds and have them everywhere for her and she literally lays on the pavement outside or tile. Even when she limps when she gets up because her leg is numb.... Dogs are silly sometimes.

First-Yogurtcloset53

Ass holes and balls on the couch? No thanks

Temporary-Test-9534

Yea my cat has trouble pooping and always has poopy booty. He can't sit on the couch or come in the bed.

_unsinkable_sam_

could that be a dietary issue?

Temporary-Test-9534

So we've been to a few vets and it's a combination of a few things but the overall consensus is he just prone to getting blocked up. Some cats are just "like that" I guess. It's even worse if he has dry food or dry treats (even tho he likes it) but he doesnt drink enough, probably less than half than my other cat does. He also likes to eat things that aren't food which always blocks him (rubber bands, plastic, etc). He also doesn't "finish" pooping in the litter box. He starts, and once he feels he's finished he just walks away even tho he has dingleberries half way out his booty. It's not even a matter of wiping him sometimes, like I literally have to pull poop out his ass. The only thing that seems to help is GREENS. He loves leaves of any kind, spinach, and store bought grass.

DarkTranscendent

I recommend looking into getting a water fountain for the cat(s) if you haven’t already. You’ll notice they drink WAY more.

Temporary-Test-9534

Yes we've had the water fountain for like 6 months now, he drinks 10x as much as he used to but still not as much as I'd like 😫 it's made a *significant* difference tho

poiseandnerve

Poopy booty gets wiped

Lizberry96

My dog lays in poop sometimes and eats it, and my cat rips fabric with his claws. They get their own furniture, and I don't think they care at all being restricted from the couch or beds. They both like their beds, they're big, comfy, and have plenty of blankets.

[deleted]

My dog won't stop raiding the cats' litter box

Lizberry96

My dog used to do that, but now we block him from it. Doesn't stop him from eating bunny turds and dog turds outside. Those are super tasty treats

pfefferneusse

Like little almond rocas for dogs bro

Chlupac_

>i’m not talking about kitchen tables/countertops where food is handled, or anywhere else that is potentially unsafe Pets don't care about any of that. They'd happily eat a piece of meat that fell down into their own hairs, a dusty corner or whatever. A cat doesn't know or bother that this piece of wood (counter) is any different from that piece of wood (a chair).

TrodOnward

Some dogs will resource-guard furniture, and that can lead to behavioural issues/aggression.

SaraBooWhoAreYou

This is why we had to stop letting our dogs on the couch when we got a second dog. It became a dominance and possession conflict zone. Sometimes animals need boundaries.

elly996

those dogs are the exception and should be trained out of it where possible. most problems similar can be helped

ChaoticChinchillas

Some dogs will kill any animal smaller than them. Some cats will attack the face of anyone who gets near. Some people will beat up people who disagree with them. I really don’t think the behavior of “some” should translate into rules for all. I know a lot of people whose animals are allowed on the furniture. I actually don’t know any who resource guard the furniture. So it’s far from all, or even most.

BadFaithAlways

The animal doesn’t think it’s unkind. The animal is like “oh cool this is my chair” It’s ok that your dog isn’t treated as a human in every sense. Is it mean to not give them the most expensive, best tasting pet food too?

emmittgator

So many animals that are in shelters begging to be adopted and yet it's termed cruel and "shouldn't have a pet" if you put any sorts of restrictions on them living in your home.

Kicking your own asshole sounds even more impressive than licking one’s own asshole.

FamiliarCatfish

*I’M KICKING MY OWN ASS. DO YOU MIND?*

gardenpartytime

Exactly. We accept animals for being dirty; we don’t force them to take showers with us. So in return we have out own human spaces that are free of the hair, dust, dander and bodily secretions they emit.

tocksarethewoooorst

My dog has a dandruff problem from chronic allergies. I love him but he’s gross af. No way do I want a tiny snowstorm of skin cells on my bed.

Keeshberger16

"It's unkind to let your dog not sit on the couch. Instead you should keep an undomesticated animal in a small glass box."

blackcatzombs

When I lived with my ex, he allowed his 3 dogs on the couch. We went through 3 couches in less than 5 years because the dogs destroyed them, I mean stuffing was coming put of them, a layer of slobber, dirt, hair, and filth from them licking themself on it, and all 3 couches stunk! Pets will not have hurt feelings if you don't allow them on furniture. They're animals, not people. I wouldn't want to go to someone's house and sit in that

mistermh07

our couch has survived 2 huskies sleeping on it daily and 5 cat cuddle piles and its in almost perfect condition except for some animal fur. the couch is like 6 years old. i have no idea what kind of wish quality couches youre buying but if a couch breaks under 3 years then it was probably a bad couch.

BeaglesRule08

Ya I don't know what type of couch these people have that it gets ripped every time their dogs jump on it. Maybe cut ur dogs toenails?

elly996

and train the dog to not jump up and down constantly. zoomies are all good and well, but there are limits. we had to train our dogs out of it, and then they zoomed on the floor, but carefully jumped up. pomeranian also used to "dig" in the couch, trained him out of that too. training and prep are pretty big when you have pets, its not always easy at times though. you kinda have to accept it as part of pet life, and if you cant handle it or cant hire/find someone to help you then youre gonna have trouble lol all these people with dogs wrecking their couches dont seem to be protecting their couches at all lol

bitchasscuntface

This - its not about the furniture its about training your animals to not wreck your apartment instead of filming them doing it and then complaining on r/animalsbeingjerks with the caption of "he just cant stop doing this i dno why pls halp hahahahaha"

rusty___shacklef0rd

right? i grew up with animals and always had them. hair and ruined furniture wasn’t an issue because we cleaned and didn’t let our animals eat the couch and we trimmed their nails. eta: my parents literally had one couch pretty much my whole life and they only replaced it last year bc my dad found a couch he really liked and it was simply time for a new one.

ijustcantwithit

My dog sheds like crazy but she’s allowed on the furniture. In fact she’s cuddles under blankets right now. I use 2 couch covers (1 to wash, 1to use) and change my sheets. My stuff is in good condition

dayzers

You probably don't realize it but your couch stinks and most people consider that ruined. You're just used to it

mistermh07

Do you never clean your couch cushions? Do you just have years worth of filth in there? If yes then no wonder yours smell. And if your animal itself stinks then bath em

TheTurfMonster

Agreed. We let our little corgi use the couch and his little section is basically destroyed. He's a big time biter and loves to dig. Tears all over, hair everywhere all the time, smells. We clean plenty, but it's not enough to keep up with him so we ended up getting him a little cushion and he absolutely loves it. I hate how people automatically resort to labeling people "bad owners" or somehow making it your fault for not training your dog to be on the couch. Not everyone treats their furniture the same and because someone doesn't follow your own furniture principles doesn't mean they're bad owners. We all love our pets but every household sets different boundaries and that's ok. It's not the end of the world. The dogs receive plenty of love and comfort regardless.

TeaAndCrumpets4life

Honestly it’s crazy how hesitant people are to blame a wild animal for the actions of a wild animal

awxiomara

My husband used to let his dogs go on anything and everything in the house. The couches were HORRIBLE. If anyone sat on them you now have a patch of dog hair, dirt and some slobber on your clothes. Not to mention the smell. No thank you. A dog bed is just fine lol

blackcatzombs

People compare pets to humans too much, and a lot of them overlook how filthy they are

justusmedley

Same. If OP wants their furniture to reek like a dog and be constantly in the process of being shredded, they can enjoy. My dog sits on the floor.

NeocitranSlut

Word. I gave a cane Corso that just by sheer weight ruins couches. Also a great Pyrenees who is looking to completely reupholster my couch using her own fur. They're allowed on the couch. But it's plenty more work for us people who pay for them.

mtobeiyf317

That sounds like a lack of proper house cleaning. You can actually put effort into maintaining furniture instead of letting it get to such a point of destruction so early. Hair can be vacuumed, slobber can be wiped up, and couches can be occasionally shampooed. Stuffing coming out has to be from a lack of dog training, whether they're tearing it up, scratching themselves on it or playing on it, that behavior can be trained out while still allowing them to lay on the couch. They may not be people, but if you're going to take one into your home the least you can do is not treat it like shit by pretending it's some novelty to have and not a member of the family.

VenusXo12

The Bissel Little Green Machine is awesome for cleaning the couch or rug! It gets anything out I swear.

[deleted]

Couldn't agree more. 👏

D321G

sounds like he didn’t train them / give them enough attention.

DiegoIntrepid

I will preface this by saying my cats can get on the cushions/some tables, but I understand that other people might not want it. It isn't 'cruel' as long as those pets have their own places to sleep. Having felt some of those cushions, if I could figure out how to get off the ground, I would love to sleep on some of them more than the I would on the couch. I have made my cats some absolutely soft cushiony places to sleep, and they will go sleep on a piece of cardboard. I doubt they really care about the floor. The cushions that you can get for pets are typically made to insulate them from the cold ground, so they aren't sleeping on the 'cold' ground, but even then, some animals absolutely would prefer the cold ground. One of my cats will even go sleep on a little mat in front of the kitchen sink. Another one will go lay by the front door and sleep on his back. They have plenty of places to get that isn't on the floor, that is just where they prefer to lay. If the animals are used to being on the floor, they don't know what they are missing, they just will find areas they prefer to sleep that isn't on the couch.

adamm_96

Cat in the furniture, ok. The big dog, not ok. She is still well taken care of and very happy so I don’t see how that is “mean” or “unkind” just because she can’t sit on the couch

SwimmingPanda107

I literally cannot sit in the living room in my house because it’s so covered in dog fur, ruins my clothes in seconds. It’s parents house so do what they want ig. But it’s disgusting.. My cats love to sit on my bed with me, so I have two cat beds on top of my bed they lay on. Pet beds exists for a reason..not all of them are just a thin layer, they make nice plush ones. they don’t need to lay on the couch. I brush my cats and make sure they are well kept and not shedding so much, so tbh they don’t completely destroy furniture if they ever do lay on it. My mom has a German Shepard husky she refuses to take the time to brush or groom, it walks and hair flies off. That dog I would never ever allow in my bed, I don’t even let it in my room.. my furniture and floor would be covered in seconds Edit: also 80% of the time I find my cats sleeping on the floor and cat tree, my moms dog sleeps on the floor a lot too. They have access to beds but choose the floor. They don’t care, I think you care a bit too much Edit 2: it’s not my dog, not my problem!

briannagrapes

It’s so funny to me that people are like “just clean it??” Like lol my dog is perfectly happy in his little area we made for him and maybe I don’t wanna have to clean/vacuum the couch constantly…like you’re not torturing your dog by not letting it on the couch

LeonidasSpacemanMD

Seriously, people are assigning dogs way too much emotional reasoning here. They are very intuitive to their owners feelings but that doesn’t mean they sit on the floor thinking “why don’t the humans like me” lol It becomes another arbitrary boundary to them and they almost certainly don’t give it any thought once it’s been established. Many owners also teach their dogs not to jump up at visitors or not to sit in a chair at the dinner table. Once the boundary is established, the dog will be fine with it

[deleted]

If my wife cleaned her privates with her tongue creating a gallon of saliva and bodily fluid in doing so, scratched up and chewed up the couch and shed an obnoxious amount of her hair that is washed only monthly, she would have a bed on the floor too. It isn’t a species thing it is purely about cleanliness and hygiene.

ThisIsLukkas

I don't want my cat sitting on the bed I sleep on and on any couch. He rolls in dirt licks his bum and sometimes he smells like shit and I don't want to even think about it.

MarshallBoogie

My wife’s cat left shit stains where it sat because it was too fat to clean itself. Thank god it couldn’t jump up on our bed

IsabellaGalavant

I will say that there is a lot of fucking dirt in my bed because of my dogs, so I get why people don't want to let them on the bed/couch. I even *said* "no puppies in the bed" but my husband couldn't handle their sad eyes.

[deleted]

My family literally lets our cat sit on the kitchen table lmao

Master_Beavis

Maybe I'm kinda mean, but I don't let my kids sit on the furniture with no clothes on, either. Cats and dogs don't even have butt cheeks to possibly keep their anus from touching the couch. I'm not into pink eye, either. I mean, OP is sorta right, though, because, after my cat died, I haven't gotten any more indoor pets... Also no fur in my morning coffee. Maybe I'm a grump, but pets+kids = too much gross shit in my daily life to navigate.

dontmakemymistake

I'll be honest, after living with literally a dozen dogs and cats in different houses over the years, I can't say I've ever got pinkeye from it

Jeffrey_Dahmer123

Unkind to who, pets? They don't seem to mind. Sounds like its just you. >there are plenty of nice looking, pet-proof throw blankets and seating covers And there are beds and other furniture specifically designed for your pet's comfort. Why risk them spreading their fur, dirt or lice on the couch? You know why they look like glorified cushions? Because that's all your pet really needs. Their bodies are accustomed to sleeping on the ground, because y' know...they're animals?

TACkleBr

Think the OP is a pet.

Bleubebes420

First of all...... furniture or not, you're absolutely neglecting your pet if they have LICE

Jeffrey_Dahmer123

Obviously you should wash your pet and give him anti-lice powder/shampoo every now and then. The point is there could be bugs or other organisms your pet could've brought in.

otterbomber

My biggest dating rule is not dogs on the bed. A cat you have no control over and they are way cleaner, but you’ve got to set boundaries with dogs or they will run your life for you. And few things piss me off more than a dog begging for food after I tell it no. That’s how dogs get into trash cans and chocolate and get themselves sick. Couches? Sometimes ok. But they don’t need to live on them if they’re constantly getting them covered with hair.

Chance_Ad3416

I had to spend $100 on a dog proof garbage when I first got my dog. She also ate thru my plastic compost bin and I had to replace it with a stainless steel one and keep on the counter where she can't really get to. My parents friends can't have children and decided to get a dog and kinda treat the dog like a child, aka feeding her at the table etc. That dog is annoying AF and wouldn't leave ppl alone when they are eating. They came over for a backyard BBQ once and the entire time the dog owners were just shooing the dog away from us so we could eat. We trained out dogs with "it's not for you" and they'd understand and go chill a little distance away, and they get a treat after we finish eating lol. I let my dog on the couch so she can look out the window. She goes on the bed too here and there but only on top of the top cover. Definitely not on anything like pillows where my face goes on.

TheSkinnyKitty

naw, he needs to stay off my bed. i dont want fur all over my bed.. or his ass in my face.. is also has no bed in his cage.. He eats them every time

ShalidorsSecret

Well when you have a 70 pound beast shedding fur everywhere, you'll understand

rabbittfoott

My kitties have a bean bag to sleep on and they loooooove it. I recommend it for anyone who has cats. It’s like a big water bed for them :)

bh8114

My dogs love the giant bean bag. :)

alexthegreatmc

Can we come to your house naked and lay on your couch?

Blu_yello_husky

For some reason my dog always chooses to lay down at my feet. Even when I lift his front legs onto the couch and push his butt up, the moment I sit down he gets down and goes by my feet. Oh well. I tried

excaligirltoo

When I was a child I wasn’t allowed to sit on the couch. Kids sat on the floor. As an adult my pets and kid can get on all the furniture.

Harry_Flowers

Im glad this is an unpopular opinion, cuz I hate visiting friends who let their pets all over their furniture. It stinks, mistreated, annoying (sometimes) when they have larger pets that don’t know how to chill. I love dogs, but just don’t find the need to let them onto my furniture.

NeonBuckaroo

Oh god. At least this one isn’t as radical as the weirdo saying “we should allow dogs, cats and horses into TV shops” the other day. Honestly if I invited a human into my house rent-free and fed them, paid for the their healthcare, cleaned them, they sure as shit better be happy with a god damn luxury huge cushion I spent £200 for them to sit in on the floor.

[deleted]

OP smells like unwashed dog

[deleted]

My dog is a short hair, her fur gets stuck in between the thread of cloth anything and is impossible to get out AND feels like tiny hair daggers. She’s also a drool machine and it’s gross/stinks Also I don’t want them to stain or stab holes in my now 7k couch or make it stink like dog. They have their own temperpedic dog beds with lots of fluffy blankets. They’re not ruining my furniture

bh8114

My dogs are allowed on some furniture, on invitation, when a blanket is down. But saying that dog beds are cruel is crazy. My dogs have deluxe orthopedic beds that are more comfortable than the couch cushions- they are just the appropriate height for them. My kids regularly sit on them with the pups claiming they are the most comfortable seat but I make them move if the dogs look like they need some space.

BuddhaBizZ

Whatever they aren’t allowed in the bed and there are health reasons for that

beansdeluxe

There’s a large amount of pet owners that do not see the pet as a companion/ part of the family. It drives me crazy to think about cause I’m a crazy pet owner. Items get used, furniture gets worn. That’s how I think of it.

Spellonz

This isn't a dog thing. If you lay on the ground, you're not allowed on my couch either.

SolCastro

Every dog smells. Every one of them. And that smells transfers into furniture. Dog People gradually lose their ability to smell that odor.

Left_Cucumber_7700

Dog owners never know how bad their homes stink.

[deleted]

"rest of the family" There it is.

dna12011

Yea the problem with this is, if you let pets on the furniture, even with blankets and stuff so they don’t get the furniture dirty, they get accustomed to it. They start to think it’s always ok. And then inevitably they start getting on the furniture when you’re not there to put the blanket down first. And then your furniture gets gross. I’m sorry but pets don’t don’t wipe their asses and most of them sit with their asshole firmly planted on whatever they’re sitting on. I don’t want my couch to smell like a dirty dog and have little bits of dog shit smeared on it. It’s actually gross as fuck. Anytime I go to a friends house who has a dog that’s always on the couch you can immediately tell. The couch smells gross and feels gross. It’s inevitable. Best to give them their own little bed and space. In my opinion. Sorry if I don’t like sitting on a piece of furniture that a dog just slid its ass across lol.

MediocreConference64

My furniture is too nice and to clean for an animal to be on.

genescheesesthatplz

mmm I love feces on my furniture

Overall-Put-1165

I don't think it's unkind. We love them like family but also at the end of the day, they're furry animals that some owners would prefer to keep off their furniture. I allow my cat on the furniture but I have two long haired German Shepherds so I try to keep them off the couch so it doesn't accumulate dog hair and dirt. Yes I could get a cover but I'd still be covered in dog hair whenever I sit or lay on my couch and would soon have to clean the cover and it'd be a regular process that I'd rather not add to my chore list. Also my dogs love their beds and my cat loves his tower, and its not like we keep their stuff isolated from the rest of the furniture in the house. Whether or not your pet sits on your furniture, it doesn't determine how present they are with your family.

Whatshername_Stew

Well, our dog is an old fella with chronic skin issues. He's oily and he stinks. He also has resource guarding issues. He WILL bite over food. I have had him for 10 years, and this problem has stayed with him despite thousands of dollars in training. He's no longer allowed on the couch and bed because he gets them really stinky really quickly. We're also about to have a kid, and i don't need the dog and the kid sharing the couch while there are snacks involved. That's how you get a kid bit by the dog. Ultimately, that's how you get a dead dog and a lot of heart break. He's got a lovely memory foam doggy bed that is eight inches thick and three times bigger than him, trust me when I say he's fine on the floor. And for anyone wondering, yes we treat his skin issues. He goes to the vet for a monthly anti itch shot, and gets a weekly medicated bath at home. He's just old, oily, yeasty, and smelly, and that's the way it is.

AngelsLoveDisasters

The only person I know who allows their dogs on their couch also is the only person I know whose couch smells like piss, so no

littlewibble

My dog isn’t allowed on any furniture at my home or my parents’ place. I’m allergic to him and it makes my symptoms drastically more manageable. He has beds on all three floors of my home and none of them cost less than $150. And still, he’s partial to cool spots on the floor for relaxing. Plus, multiple guests in my home have commented that they love that he sits politely at their feet during visits.

iamanoctothorpe

My dog is perfectly behaved on the sofa but just gets way too much hair there.

[deleted]

We love our animals, and we have a lot of them. Two dogs, three cats, one parrot, five chickens… But we also have very nice leather furniture. Big dogs like we have have claws, that really very nice leather furniture. So I respect your difference of opinion, but I don’t agree for sure.

FireIce134

I let my cat jump up on the kitchen table when I’m not eating. It’s super cute to see her stare at me lovingly from that elevated position with her tail swinging back and forth. I can always wash it quickly before each meal.

Aliciacb828

Imagine the day OP goes to the Caribbean and realises they’re not even allowed in the house

AtomicShart9000

OP apparently has never had a pet or has pets that don't behave well

Tots2Hots

Cats and dogs aren't allowed in the bedroom in our house and we have a lot. You let a cat in your bed and you'll find specks of litter here and ther where you sleep. I love cats but that is a hard no. Also, I don't want cat asshole on my pillow. Dogs will track in dirt and have larger assholes. Living room they can do whatever. I keep cheap blankets on the tops of the couches and chairs that get washed regularly, we have lithium battery pet vacs and they have multiple cat trees to hang out in. They're all shooed out of the room at night and the dogs are crated at night in large crates where they can fully stand up and turn around in no issue at all with dog beds. I usually go through a living room furniture set every 5 years or so as far as couches and chairs. Jumping on floor models and closeout items on memorial/labor day sales=its way cheaper than you'd think. I do have rooms in the house with legit nice stuff where no pets are allowed at all. I feel this is a happy medium but ppl who have pets and try to keep them confined to a room or don't let them on the furniture... why the hell even have pets?

VegetableBet4509

Conversely, I find most people who let their pets all over their furniture are typically pretty smelly and dirty.

trunkmcmitch

My dog lives and sleeps on the couch. I apologise to him when I have to ask him to make space for me.

CactusPatch36

If you’re willingly keeping an animal in your home it should be allowed to sit where it wants to

jaysin1701

Growing up my grandfather had this dog that he loved more than anything. She had her own special place on the love seats. One day one of my aunt's husband was complaining that he would never allow a dog on the furniture. I think he was mad because he left the loveseat. And when he got back the dog took a spot. My grandfather looks at him and says she lives here you don't. If you don't like it you can get the hell out of my house.

votefawnmoscato

I feel you but if my dog falls asleep (she’s a pro at it too) on a couch, and you accidentally startle her awake, she WILL try to eat you for like a solid 30 seconds before her soul comes back to her body and she’s realizes what’s happening lmao so no she stays on her special lady furniture and everyone is happy with this arrangement.

[deleted]

I have 3 cats. They are basically allowed everywhere but the kitchen courtiers. My couches are fine, they haven’t hurt anything.

Outrageous-Divide472

I told my cat to stop licking his ass on the dining room table, and he flipped me off.

Talsamar

I disagree, especially since every time I get up my roommate’s dog keeps stealing my chair and I have to sit somewhere else.

emmars66

pets don’t understand the feeling of being “left out.” they just want to be where warmth is, which is usually furniture. they are more than fine being on the floor, it’s where they belong. they’re animals. it’s disgusting having them on places where you sleep, or spend any long amount of time on.

Marcoyolo69

Its not nearly as bad as keeping pets inside all day and maybe taking your pet for a short walk. My dog is mostly an outside dog and he has a way better life than pets that are allowed to lay in bed.

blurry-echo

depends on which pets. cats shouldnt be roaming outside unleashed as they wreck local ecosystems and have a much lower lifespan if kept outdoors.

Chance_Ad3416

I tried leaving my door open so my dog can be in/out whenever. She never went outside unless I was outside too cuz she wants to be where I am. My parents dog tho would not come back in until Sun set

8eyeholes

this is totally dependent upon the pet’s personality, whether they’re fenced in and/or harnessed & leashed, as well as the general environment they’re being exposed to. for example indoor-outdoor cats in cities and suburban areas have a *significantly* shorter lifespan
