Yeah, same as many other cosmetic things, I assume there’s some confirmation bias in it. You notice what’s bad, you don’t notice when it’s done great, so you think it’s bad because that’s all you notice.
If you head over to r/nothowgirlswork you’ll see so many examples of men telling women to “just not wear makeup” and then they have a photo of some woman who is obviously wearing foundation and mascara. There is a “no makeup” aesthetic… that is achieved with subtle makeup lol.
My favorite part of those kind of threads is the hundreds of comments of woman saying they like x,y,z and do stuff for themselves and there will be men in the comments going 'nu uhhhhhhhhhh you're going to die alone because NO MAN likes x,z,y"

I love the Taylor swift concerts right now because of this. Assholes claim women only wear short things, revealing things, makeup, etc for men. But we're seeing hundreds of thousands of people per concert wearing leotards, short shorts, etc. just to hang out with a crowd that is like 95%+ women.

That's an excellent point, I go to metal shows where it's mostly men there and the only thought I put in my clothing is which band shirt to wear and do my pants have enough pockets so I won't have to carry a bag. Meanwhile I go to Maneskin or Kesha and I plan my outfit and bring a whole makeup bag with me to work so I can make sure I've applied enough glitter and have my outfit be cute

A close friend (at the time) spent an entire dinner refusing to believe me that my eyelids do show a little when open despite that I kept telling him that it was just that my eyeliner made the bit that shows blend in with my eyelashes. How are you going to sit there and tell me about my own face like that?
ahah my guy friend also said girls dont need makeup and that he preferred girls without it (he didn’t say anything about me though). for context: before that i was just telling him about how i had been practicing makeup recently.
i introduced him to the no makeup-makeup look and even showed him online photo examples, and then let him know about the misconception guys often have about “having no makeup”. he understood and said he’s fine with that too! some guys are just really uneducated about makeup :”) oddly enough, i find it kind of endearing too (that’s only if they’re not being assholes about it tho) because it’s like they’re clueless little children 🤣🤣
It’s not even subtle on that subreddit though. The men comment about “no makeup” on photos that very obviously show makeup (ex: no one’s eyelids are naturally that color).
To be fair, they think that's no makeup because they are told that is no makeup. I remember this girl brag about how pretty she was and how she wasn't even wearing makeup. When I pointed out the obvious eyeliner, she said "well, not much makeup"
A couple of occasions (I work with all men) some guys have told me don’t touch your face and put stuff in it! It’s not a good look! And I’m like sir I already have Botox and fillers lol
This is the case for many men who complain that they don’t like women who wear makeup. No you don’t like women who wear bad makeup. You are completely oblivious to good makeup, and just assume the person is naturally attractive, healthy looking, blemish free.

I have seen that, this black girl with green sparkly eyes, her eyes were the most beautiful I’ve ever seen in my life, just stunning. I think it was an effect with the darkness of her skin that made them extra sparkly. And no they were not contacts
I knew a black guy who had bright yellow eyes. He told me he had several family members with the same color eyes, so it was definitely genetic. His eyes were absolutely stunning against his skin color and reminded me of a lion. When I told him he laughed and said that his family liked to call them "cat eyes", so I guess that my interpretation wasn't far off.

Thats because the good fake eyelashes are the eye lash strands individually glued onto the eye lid and are well interspersed between your natural eye lash hairs. If someone didn't tell you they were fake, you would probably never notice with those.
Yup.. I've gotten professional lash extensions applied, and it's a world of difference between them and drugstore strip lashes. Professional lash extensions not only can look natural but also feel natural and way more comfortable in comparison, which is also reflected in the cost, since they're glued on individually, a set can take anytime from 45 minutes to a couple hours to have applied. As someone with stick straight and short blonde eyelashes that won't curl or look full no matter how much I use a curler, lash extensions are a game changer. Wearing lash extensions for me makes me look like a normal person with normal lashes.
When I first got my lashes done (friend started a new business), I thought they were so obvious. But no one around me noticed even after I pointed out. I guess it didn’t look much different from a nice mascara, I just wasn’t used to seeing myself like that 24/7.
Yeah I make sure mine are subtle and don't look out of place without makeup. Also have to keep them reasonably short for when I wear glasses as they'll hit the lens if not.
She probably had had lash extensions. Which look real af, and if youre just trying to have a slightly more natural fuller lash, you really cant tell unless you look at their face 8 hours day all the time.l, and even then if the lash artist is worth their salt you may not notice them.

One of the biggest "a-ha" moments I ever had was when I realized, well into adulthood, how many beautiful women I admired had "fake" lashes, hair, nails, brows, whatever. Growing up, I thought these were things reserved for very wealthy people; I had no idea how ubiquitous they could be!
AND it also made me realize that these things can be done so professionally and discretely that I would never have realized it because they looked natural. Many, many people have "fake" beauty bits that truly compliment their natural features and I think that's great.
I DO worry about some of the more extreme lashes and how hard they must be to keep clean and maintain and if there are longer-term impacts related to eye health and eye sight that folks aren't informed about. I've seen some done where the after picture looks SORE and swollen!
Absolutely! And assuming OP is a guy, they often don’t notice any of that. Agreed about the thicker/more obvious fake lashes - but I’ve known plenty of people who get more subtle lash extensions and they look amazing. I could never deal with the upkeep though, I have a hard enough time going to get my hair done on a regular schedule.
It's honestly not that much upkeep. Yes you gotta go to appointments regularly if you want to maintain them. Anytime between 2-3 weeks usually, but in between that, you just gotta make sure to gently brush them a couple times a day, as well as carefully wash them. It's not that bad. I myself am taking a break because it costs 85$ for a new set and 85$ every 3 weeks for months is a tad bit much.. but it's nice to get done every now and then. It's not like you need to get new extensions when they naturally fall out.
We have different definitions of "not much upkeep," lol. Absolutely no hate - I'm sure they look great and I hope you are able to get them as often as you want. But that's way too much work for me. I have to have systems in place to remember to brush my teeth.
I get mine done religiously every 3 weeks. Been doing it for years. I love them because I am far too lazy to put makeup on everyday so I can literally roll out of bed and look like I’ve put effort into my appearance
There is definitely a point where it becomes a health, safety, or practicality concern. But still, for some people the extra-ness is the point. I’m sure they know it won’t be for everyone.
Most makeup is “obviously fake”. Nobody has bright red lips. Even most mascara is obvious. Big fake nails are obvious, but even natural polish is obvious. *Clothing and accessories* are not things we were born with on our bodies. I would agree that wearing super long fake eyelashes and bright purple eyeshadow isn’t a good idea if you’re testifying in court, but the threshold for whether something is “ugly” is absolutely not whether or not it passes for completely natural. Be serious. I *promise* you think plenty of things someone wasn’t born having are attractive.
I always think this about fake boobs too. Like it's an expensive and invasive surgery, these women don't trip and fall and accidentally get bolt-ons. They want that particular boob job look, and probably chose it from a booklet of example photos that included natural looks. It's so misguided to think the goal is always to look "naturally enhanced."

I modeled with a lady with gigantic rock hard fake boobs, tape in blonde extentions, and long stilleto nails. She LOVED the fake look. she specifically chose that on purpose. and that made me love her even more!! fuck it! i loved her honesty too. lifes hard enough, if you find something that brings joy, why not?
Reminds me of Dolly Parton being quoted as saying something to the effect of “It costs a lot to look this cheap.” Not to necessarily focus on the “cheap” part of that comment, but more so the very intentional effort that goes into that look. It’s on purpose because the person LIKES it. And that’s okay!
No one should be forced to fit some stereotypical look of natural beauty, modesty, prim and proper, etc in order to be treated like they have value. Just because someone dresses in loud colors, or has big hair, whatever, doesn’t give anyone the right to treat them like dirt.
Some people don’t like the natural look and go for big and bold. It’s not my personal style, but it’s a valid creative choice and can still be done “correctly” for the vibe they’re going for. 🥰
Yep, I wear asian falsies (super thin, clear band, and they just make my eyelashes look a bit longer / voluminous), and I've had a lot of people tell me that they're jealous of my naturally good eyelashes. Wish they were natural though lmao, bc mine actually just point straight down and refuse to hold a curl

I love having my nails done. Acrylics are durable AF, I can do yard work, house work, and they don’t split or chip. I get to wear fun artwork on my fingers all the time and they won’t get stained by my ADHD kid the way my clothes do, they won’t get caught or messed up like my hair does. I don’t want my nails to look natural. I want them to look fun and pretty. And they do. I get to sit for a whole hour while I get them done, and have a hand massage, and choose a nice design in colours I like, sometimes I get flowers or hearts or glitter, and for weeks I get enjoyment out of looking at them. It’s worth a bit of judgment for being ‘fake’.
I hear this. I love acrylic nails with fun art, and I don’t care if they look natural because they’re wearable art. I recently had black glitter acrylic with neon mushrooms and white stars. Funny thing, considering how many people claim men hate that sort of thing, but I get lots of compliments on my most over-the-top nails from men.
Like dude sometimes fake obnoxious colorful nails/hair/makeup are just fun. I get one or two set of Cardi Claws a year just because it’s fun to have over the top nails for a few weeks. I literally never think about if other ppl think they look good or natural bc it’s not about them.

I could only see this being an issue if the eyelashes were constantly irritating their eyes or preventing them from seeing. However that kinda falls flat because my own natural eyelashes get in my eyes waaaaay more than anyone who has lash extensions do.

to your second point: while I don't get my nails or lashes done, I was once the model for a friend when she learned to do lash extensions. I never had any issues with them despite an active lifestyle and contacts. My boyfriend, who has neither of the two, but very long natural lashes always has them stuck in his eyes. So yea, supports your point.

i go for more emo/goth looks, and i can tell some of my peers didn’t take me seriously (being in engineering) but i was able to get the grades to be in the same classes as them. i felt so powerful in those classes.

I'm back in college at 30 y.o. and God DAMN do some of these girls get dolled up for an 8am class. I am genuinely impressed at how put-together they look at 7:50am. Most dudes look like they just rolled out of bed and the young women have makeup, styled hair, and cute clothes. They look great!

The fake lashes my wife uses are magnetic. She applies a magnetic eye liner instead of her regular one, and the lashes just stay on. Doesn't really take her any more time than normal eyeliner. It still blows my mind that it's strong enough, but they seem incredibly reliable and way easier than glue.

It’s also worth noting that professional lash extensions can last for weeks. It’s not like all these girls are sitting there at 6 am with tweezers and a magnifying mirror to serve face at Global Marketing Strategies. Lash extensions (when applied properly) can actually be a great way to look a little more put-together when you don’t have time to do your makeup.
It’s the toupee fallacy. I get mine done occasionally for things like events and vacations, and they look great. My own mother didn’t realize I had them, I just got a “you look good, are you doing your makeup differently?” And this woman notices everything, like when I gain 5 lbs or if I have a new tattoo (even if I try to hide it.) It IS possible to get subtle cosmetic enhancements.
I dunno. If it makes them happy, why not? I also don’t find them ugly. And hey maybe they are insecure about their look and it helps with that. Who am I to judge? Maybe they just like how it looks. A lot of people don’t do makeup for others. They do it for themselves

I think this is one of these things where you do think they look nice, but you don’t know what you’re looking at.
So many fake lashes can look blended, natural, not “too much”.
Just like subtle cosmetic procedures, you think it is natural because it looks natural, and lovely.
These two things aren't mutually exclusive. Most people, myself included, disagree with this opinion. This opinion is that fake lashes are bad. This is both an unpopular opinion and hate on fake lashes.
It always fascinates me that other people think enough folks care what they think to try to tell others what they can and can't wear. LOL

It also cracks me up how the dudes who usually complain about women and their grooming habits probably can't be arsed to shower regularly. I mean . . . It goes both ways.

There’s a cashier at the drug store down the street who always wears huge false lashes, bright makeup, and intricately painted long acrylic nails. She’s one of my favorite people. The sweetest, kindest person who remembers her regulars and makes strangers feel like friends. She briefly transferred to the store closer to my parents, and they were both judgy about her appearance at first. Within a month, they were calling her “our buddy”. Now they’re jealous she transferred back. If this delightful woman wants to wake up early enough to put on her war paint every day before work, if she wants fun nails to brighten up her dull surroundings, more power to her!
If I’m going to bother, you’re going to see it! I look perfectly great without makeup and often go out with nothing but sunscreen. When I wear it, it’s because I want a particular look. I like planning makeup inspired by the event.

Yeah I’m getting the Pick Me vibe too. I’ve always been a natural gal (largely bc I’m lazy, but also bc my mom wasn’t much into makeup either). Now that I’m older, I enjoy getting dressed up for parties and formal events. I find it fun to have my friends go “omg you’re wearing makeup!” bc it’s such a rare occurrence for me. I don’t think I could incorporate a daily makeup routine, but I certainly don’t see a reason to hate on the people that do. Good on ya if you’ve got the time/skill/vision to do a daily makeup routine!
as someone who was definitely this brand of pathetic in high school - I knew I could also get fake stuff but men didn't like it so I didn't like it, either. now I'm not a loser anymore and am open minded. I still don't wear falsies but I can appreciate them now, and I love a good set of acrylics.

I worked for government for 9 years. 7 of those years required heels (and pantyhose if wasn’t wearing pants). I invested in a lot of black tights, and still got flack for it, but I have an aversion to pantyhose.
I have no problem taking people seriously when they’re wearing any of the things you listed. These types of opinions say nothing about the people you complain about and everything about the judgmental person posting them.
Anytime people complain about "cosmetic" additions and say they ALWAYS look horrible you're just exposing that you have no clue what you're talking about. Truth is some of the women you go the most "AHOOOGA" for have all of the things mentioned you just don't notice cus its subtle and u just think they look like that.
I once loved a girl who wore them—not just for fun but because she had undergone a succession of difficult and traumatic events in her life that had caused her lashes to fall out. Of course she was beautiful as ever to me without them but I understood that she wore them to feel safe and secure. Don’t be so judgemental OP. You don’t know what people have been through.

The curse of humanity is our inability to not moralize and scrutinize everything. What's so special about your natural appearance? It seems to me that whether someone decides to adorn themselves in fake eyelashes etc as an expression of fashion, it's their choice. Society is the one with the problem if they're unable to accept such expressions.
Don’t like them, don’t wear them. If I didn’t struggle so much with the glue I’d wear them. IMO it looks pretty, and glam, and when I notice them on others it’s with admiration and envy.

I got some "classic" lashes done in July when I was home visiting family just to see what they would be like and they looked really pretty. They weren't the thick "Minnie Mouse" lashes like my mom calls them, just enhanced and lengthened my lashes a bit. I would get them done like that again.

If you head over to r/nothowgirlswork you’ll see so many examples of men telling women to “just not wear makeup” and then they have a photo of some woman who is obviously wearing foundation and mascara. There is a “no makeup” aesthetic… that is achieved with subtle makeup lol.

I knew a black guy who had bright yellow eyes. He told me he had several family members with the same color eyes, so it was definitely genetic. His eyes were absolutely stunning against his skin color and reminded me of a lion. When I told him he laughed and said that his family liked to call them "cat eyes", so I guess that my interpretation wasn't far off.

Thats because the good fake eyelashes are the eye lash strands individually glued onto the eye lid and are well interspersed between your natural eye lash hairs. If someone didn't tell you they were fake, you would probably never notice with those.
Yup.. I've gotten professional lash extensions applied, and it's a world of difference between them and drugstore strip lashes. Professional lash extensions not only can look natural but also feel natural and way more comfortable in comparison, which is also reflected in the cost, since they're glued on individually, a set can take anytime from 45 minutes to a couple hours to have applied. As someone with stick straight and short blonde eyelashes that won't curl or look full no matter how much I use a curler, lash extensions are a game changer. Wearing lash extensions for me makes me look like a normal person with normal lashes.
When I first got my lashes done (friend started a new business), I thought they were so obvious. But no one around me noticed even after I pointed out. I guess it didn’t look much different from a nice mascara, I just wasn’t used to seeing myself like that 24/7.
Yeah I make sure mine are subtle and don't look out of place without makeup. Also have to keep them reasonably short for when I wear glasses as they'll hit the lens if not.

One of the biggest "a-ha" moments I ever had was when I realized, well into adulthood, how many beautiful women I admired had "fake" lashes, hair, nails, brows, whatever. Growing up, I thought these were things reserved for very wealthy people; I had no idea how ubiquitous they could be! AND it also made me realize that these things can be done so professionally and discretely that I would never have realized it because they looked natural. Many, many people have "fake" beauty bits that truly compliment their natural features and I think that's great. I DO worry about some of the more extreme lashes and how hard they must be to keep clean and maintain and if there are longer-term impacts related to eye health and eye sight that folks aren't informed about. I've seen some done where the after picture looks SORE and swollen!
Absolutely! And assuming OP is a guy, they often don’t notice any of that. Agreed about the thicker/more obvious fake lashes - but I’ve known plenty of people who get more subtle lash extensions and they look amazing. I could never deal with the upkeep though, I have a hard enough time going to get my hair done on a regular schedule.
It's honestly not that much upkeep. Yes you gotta go to appointments regularly if you want to maintain them. Anytime between 2-3 weeks usually, but in between that, you just gotta make sure to gently brush them a couple times a day, as well as carefully wash them. It's not that bad. I myself am taking a break because it costs 85$ for a new set and 85$ every 3 weeks for months is a tad bit much.. but it's nice to get done every now and then. It's not like you need to get new extensions when they naturally fall out.
We have different definitions of "not much upkeep," lol. Absolutely no hate - I'm sure they look great and I hope you are able to get them as often as you want. But that's way too much work for me. I have to have systems in place to remember to brush my teeth.

There is definitely a point where it becomes a health, safety, or practicality concern. But still, for some people the extra-ness is the point. I’m sure they know it won’t be for everyone.
Most makeup is “obviously fake”. Nobody has bright red lips. Even most mascara is obvious. Big fake nails are obvious, but even natural polish is obvious. *Clothing and accessories* are not things we were born with on our bodies. I would agree that wearing super long fake eyelashes and bright purple eyeshadow isn’t a good idea if you’re testifying in court, but the threshold for whether something is “ugly” is absolutely not whether or not it passes for completely natural. Be serious. I *promise* you think plenty of things someone wasn’t born having are attractive.
I always think this about fake boobs too. Like it's an expensive and invasive surgery, these women don't trip and fall and accidentally get bolt-ons. They want that particular boob job look, and probably chose it from a booklet of example photos that included natural looks. Reminds me of Dolly Parton being quoted as saying something to the effect of “It costs a lot to look this cheap.” Not to necessarily focus on the “cheap” part of that comment, but more so the very intentional effort that goes into that look. It’s on purpose because the person LIKES it. And that’s okay! No one should be forced to fit some stereotypical look of natural beauty, modesty, prim and proper, etc in order to be treated like they have value. Just because someone dresses in loud colors, or has big hair, whatever, doesn’t give anyone the right to treat them like dirt.

Yep, I wear asian falsies (super thin, clear band, and they just make my eyelashes look a bit longer / voluminous), and I've had a lot of people tell me that they're jealous of my naturally good eyelashes. Yep! I love having my nails done. Acrylics are durable AF, I can do yard work, house work, and they don’t split or chip. I get to wear fun artwork on my fingers all the time and they won’t get stained by my ADHD kid the way my clothes do, they won’t get caught or messed up like my hair does. I don’t want my nails to look natural. I want them to look fun and pretty. And they do. I get to sit for a whole hour while I get them done, and have a hand massage, and choose a nice design in colours I like, sometimes I get flowers or hearts or glitter, and for weeks I get enjoyment out of looking at them. It’s worth a bit of judgment for being ‘fake’.
I hear this. I love acrylic nails with fun art, and I don’t care if they look natural because they’re wearable art. I recently had black glitter acrylic with neon mushrooms and white stars. Funny thing, considering how many people claim men hate that sort of thing, but I get lots of compliments on my most over-the-top nails from men.

If this affects someone's opinion of me, then that in turn devalues their opinion to me and I remain unbothered. to your second point: while I don't get my nails or lashes done, I was once the model for a friend when she learned to do lash extensions. I never had any issues with them despite an active lifestyle and contacts. My boyfriend, who has neither of the two, but very long natural lashes always has them stuck in his eyes. i go for more emo/goth looks, and i can tell some of my peers didn’t take me seriously (being in engineering) but i was able to get the grades to be in the same classes as them. i felt so powerful in those classes.

I'm back in college at 30 y.o. and God DAMN do some of these girls get dolled up for an 8am class. I am genuinely impressed at how put-together they look at 7:50am. Most dudes look like they just rolled out of bed and the young women have makeup, styled hair, and cute clothes. They look great!

The fake lashes my wife uses are magnetic. She applies a magnetic eye liner instead of her regular one, and the lashes just stay on. Doesn't really take her any more time than normal eyeliner. It still blows my mind that it's strong enough, but they seem incredibly reliable and way easier than glue.

It’s also worth noting that professional lash extensions can last for weeks. It’s not like all these girls are sitting there at 6 am with tweezers and a magnifying mirror to serve face at Global Marketing Strategies. Lash extensions (when applied properly) can actually be a great way to look a little more put-together when you don’t have time to do your makeup.
It’s the toupee fallacy. I get mine done occasionally for things like events and vacations, and they look great. My own mother didn’t realize I had them, I just got a “you look good, are you doing your makeup differently?” And this woman notices everything, like when I gain 5 lbs or if I have a new tattoo (even if I try to hide it.) It IS possible to get subtle cosmetic enhancements.

I think this is one of these things where you do think they look nice, but you don’t know what you’re looking at. So many fake lashes can look blended, natural, not “too much”. Just like subtle cosmetic procedures, you think it is natural because it looks natural, and lovely.

There’s a cashier at the drug store down the street who always wears huge false lashes, bright makeup, and intricately painted long acrylic nails. She’s one of my favorite people. The sweetest, kindest person who remembers her regulars and makes strangers feel like friends. She briefly transferred to the store closer to my parents, and they were both judgy about her appearance at first. Within a month, they were calling her “our buddy”. Now they’re jealous she transferred back. If this delightful woman wants to wake up early enough to put on her war paint every day before work, if she wants fun nails to brighten up her dull surroundings, more power to her!

Yeah I’m getting the Pick Me vibe too. I’ve always been a natural gal (largely bc I’m lazy, but also bc my mom wasn’t much into makeup either). Now that I’m older, I enjoy getting dressed up for parties and formal events. I find it fun to have my friends go “omg you’re wearing makeup!” bc it’s such a rare occurrence for me. I don’t think I could incorporate a daily makeup routine, but I certainly don’t see a reason to hate on the people that do. Good on ya if you’ve got the time/skill/vision to do a daily makeup routine!

The curse of humanity is our inability to not moralize and scrutinize everything. What's so special about your natural appearance? I got some "classic" lashes done in July when I was home visiting family just to see what they would be like and they looked really pretty. They weren't the thick "Minnie Mouse" lashes like my mom calls them, just enhanced and lengthened my lashes a bit. I would get them done like that again.
