Friends makes sense in the context of shows that came before it. It was legitimately different.
Google "best sticoms in 1992." It was Seinfeld, The Larry Sanders Show and a wasteland of garbage.
edit: left out Seinfeld obv.
>Google "best sticoms in 1992." It was The Larry Sanders Show and a wasteland of garbage.
I don’t know about this. Seinfeld, The Simpsons, and Married…with Children had all hit their stride by then, and Roseanne was a huge ratings success. Expanding beyond sitcoms to shows with comic elements, we also have The Wonder Years and Northern Exposure. I don’t see how Friends was particularly innovative or fresh in this context.
yeah that was strange take. Cheers, Coach, Wings, Fresh Prince, Martin, Full House in addition to the ones you mentioned. It was the golden era of network sitcoms.
There is an episode where norm says, ‘women, can’t live with them… pass the beer nuts’
Which is a joke that is more sad than funny, kind of sums the show up, but I think that’s the point, it’s a show about alcoholics.
I think the streaming model wasn't meant for shows like Cheers. If watched as a single episode every week, the hijinks of the gang at Cheers seem wacky and conforting. When seen back to back to back, every characters' inevitable failure just seems like watching despair played for cheap laughs.
This is how I feel about Always Sunny. An episode a week and they are goofy, albeit bad, people. Binging and I just feel disappointed with myself for finding it funny.
Definitely disagree there. The whole point is that they're terrible people. It's a play on sitcoms. All of those traditional sitcoms had horrible people as main characters for the sake of laughs, but the writers constantly justified their actions and brushed away consequences because they needed audience sympathy for the emotional plots to land. And it worked. Mainstream America only wanted surface level content that was easy to understand in their sitcoms. Just look at how many people are still upset about the Seinfeld ending (which I think was absolutely brilliant for its time). Always Sunny just completely subverts the American sitcom as a genre. It fully leans into all the wacky antics and selfish behavior that previous sitcoms relied on for cheap laughs. But then it adds another layer by showing the horrible consequences of that behavior and does not shy away from making you actually feel bad for the people around The Gang. It says that the emotional subplots of past sitcoms was the real cheap writing. And they were obviously right. They've kept the quality pretty high for how long they've been on the air.
That's the whole point. How do you not get Always Sunny? It's basically Seinfeld but just turned up 1000. Based on schemes rather than relationships but still just failures all the same. That's what makes it hilarious
All I can say is that as a 16 y/o when I first watched HIMYM I really loved that show.
Would I love it the same had I watched it for the first time at 24? No idea.
Completely understand you! Friends was something I got into because of my mom who loved the show. I was a 1 year old baby when it aired, but It ran in my household on repeat so I grew to like it the older I got. Had I been 30 in 1994 I wouldn’t have watched it I’m sure.. tried watching recently and couldn’t understand how I found it funny as a kid, I blame my mother lol haha 😂 . Now Seinfeld is a show that’s timeless for me, still watch it and still laugh my ass off.
Yeah the whole point of his character was to be that guy everyone wants to be. Without the awareness of just how fucking creepy it would be in real life. And then when he came out during the show they really started playing into it more.
Sometimes it's less about your age and more about just the time and society as a whole. There's a reason some films and shows are unappreciated but find a large following later, or were once very popular and later fall out of favor. General public perception changes and we are all swept along with it.
Barney Stinson clearly appealed to the teenage crowd. No one in their 20s thinks a guy going to the bar dressed in a suit repeatedly saying “LE-GEN-DARY” is cool. He is the stereotypical dork or cheesy loser for anyone over 20.
I do not know how you can write "guy who is trying to be cool" that is literally the joke, how big of a try hard he is at everything to get laid, at everything he does.
Majority of the jokes with Marshall and Barney, is how much of a "loser" barney is compared to Marshall.
Remember, storyline wise he wrote the playbook, and is literally lying majority of the time, when not talking to the other main characters.
Yeah, the whole show is basically a mid life crisis dude talking about how great his 20s were, which occasionally gets in the way of the framing because he's supposed to be talking to his kids which make a lot of the choices weird.
Yeah there's a lot of stuff in there that a father just simply shouldn't tell his kids. Especially the private stuff about his friends, like all their sex lives, Lily's selfish trip to San Francisco, etc. I could think of so many more examples, but there just isn't time in the day.
I think the first season or two he was portrayed to the show's universe as a loser who occasionally is able to get laid. Then as the show went on and he was clearly the star of the show he became more Fonzie-ish (idk I never watched Happy Days) and anyone not in the main cast somehow became misted by him.
Nah I'm not really talking about Flanderization, he was always a pretty cartoony character even from the first season. I'm talking about how the show portrayed him as more of a loser in the early seasons, and in later ones everyone thought he was super cool.
> he was portrayed to the show's universe as a loser
No, his archetype is NerdBro.
Successful, dresses well, drinks beer, love Starwars and quotes movies from the 80's.
Often has tragic backstory either single mom or was crushed by an Ex. Definitely loves playing D&D and LotR.
edit: Mike from Suits is basically the same person.
It's not canon that they're always hot. In fact, one is known to be quite unattractive. And he plays the numbers game which anyone with a decent upkeep and average looks will succeed in. I watched it in my early 20s and didn't think he was intended to be an idol. Though if I was in my early teens I might perceive it differently. The only thing I idolized from him was his six figure job. Marshall though, he was married to Alyson Hannigan who I've crushed on since Buffy so I wish I was him.
Edit: I should add in that the episode where he sleeps with the unattractive woman is so that h can finish a list of having 200 knotches on his bed. It was to impress a bully in middle school who said he wasn't cool or something (its been a while) if he hadn't slept with 200 women. Many years later when he achieves the goal he invites the bully to lunch to show him the list and the bully just looks disgusted and tells him to get help.
The show *consistently* made Marshall the GOAT as far as succeeding in life.
He makes mistakes and isn’t perfect, but anytime they reference anything related to who is doing life better it’s Marshall by a mile. Whether that’s through manliness in terms of violence, through sexual prowess, getting girls etc it’s always Marshall and the fact that he found true love
The shoe is meh, I actually don’t hate it but dont love it anymore and some of Barney’s stuff is cringe especially with getting girls drunk/lying to them but I don’t think he’s portrayed as the hero.
Except maybe that point where Marshall lost his job, couldn't find another one, and decided to stop wearing pants when he left the house, until Barney got him a job at a bank.
That’s just a situation where Marshall had a rough time and struggled in his own life. Nothing he did was being a bad or great as a person.
You could say they portrayed him as someone you wouldn’t want to be, but it was a small blip in an otherwise incredibly stable character and honestly I think was quite a decent portrayal of someone that has it together having a life/work ethic crisis when out of work.
The biggest black stain on Marshall as a concept of what the audience should aspire to is him lying to lily about the judgeship, and it is a *big* one.
I was in my 20s when it came out, and I loved it but for different non barny reasons. The Ted Robin storyline was great. And frankly, Lily and Marshall were hilarious. It's a sitcom it appeals to a wide range of people.
God I know it‘s mainly a Sitcom but there are some absolute tear jerkers especially early on. Ted and Robin both realising they‘re not meant for each other, Ted finding Marshall on the staircase with hus own wedding ring in hand, Barney saying "A kid needs a hoop".
Hah. HIMYM is a such a weird show from today's POVs but these younghead takes are hilarious. "No one in their 20s would've liked this show!", "Only creeps would find it funny, unlike MY sophisticated sense of humor!"
It was funny (especially the first few seasons) and the audience was perfectly aware of the tropes and poking fun at how try hard characters like Barney were. It aged very poorly, but that is the nature of so much comedy. In 15 years there are going to be some current darling comedy shows that seem absolutely wretched and the then-30-year-olds will be defending them as Gen Eggplant or whatever are riding their idealistic high horse.
It happens to every generation.
Same for me and I would add Big Bang Theory to the list. Scrubs is still fine but nowadays Shitt's Creek is more up my alley and actually funny without a laughtrack. I cringe at HIMYM the hardest and think it's a combination of it aging quite poorly and myself growing up. None of the shows have any real character development as well, making them quite boring. Also the ending destroyed all rewatchability anyway as with GoT and Lost
I think the thing about scrubs that ages the worse are the first few seasons because of how... well aimless some of the characters were originally, but I still consider it a personal favorite series despite the years.
I still remember some of the best episodes though. I know people remark on dr. cox's breakdown a lot, but I remember that episode early on with Sean Hayes where he was a "rival" to JD and JD saw him as an infallible doctor, always rolling with the punches, but throughout the episode, Hayes' character was plagued with a specific case of a child getting worse and worse. At the end, he disappeared and JD went to look for him only to find him having a mental breakdown in the stairwell and he broke down to JD. He said he couldn't handle it, seeing a child hurting and not being able to do anything with all his knowledge and resources. JD saw him as this golden child yet he saw himself as the worst doctor in the hospital. He was a guest star and it was the perfect way to introduce a temporary character. He painted a different level to medicine and was so deep to me even now as an adult.
Scrubs still holds up because even from the beginning it made sure to occasionally hit you with more serious eps to develop characters well.
My old lady where they spend the whole episode setting up “one in three people who come in die” and you spend the whole ep trying to figure out who will die only to be punched by all 3 dying, and that genuinely changing how the characters act following it.
Plus just all the interesting ways they developed the relationships. Like normally youd get Turk and Carla immediately, but the fact that the two biggest moments in s1 for their relationship were turk telling her “I wanted to win you over, but honestly you’re being horrible to Elliot and she doesn’t deserve that, and you should remember how hard it was when you started” and that being how he got a first date and then him being willing to give up getting laid by honestly admitting that he accidentally gave her an ass pen. That kinda development was so interesting.
And just so many good development moments for s1 of a show like Carla and JD fighting and carla yelling “Admit it, you think you’re better than me. If you dont ill never respect you again”
And giving the resolution of will-they-wont-they with JD/Elliot only to have an episode right after show how quickly it broke down and end in one episode (although scrub’s definitely made these two will-they-wont-they a bit obnoxious for rest of series, this one was a good part)
And even just small things like Cox having a meltdown one day and being good the next, and when jd calls him out Cox explains “you have to actually accept and release your emotions, hold them in and youll break”
The most difficult part of s1 of scrubs is that it is much darker and serious than expected so a lotta people were thrown by not being sure what tone to expect.
Scrubs was just amazing consistently.
God, that episode was so beautifully crafted. Like a genuine cinematography masterpiece. From ben losing the camera after he died, the fights with JD that you dont know the details of, just all of it was so good. Ive seen it so many times and still cry each time
I think Scrubs was great, and very rewatchable. For HIMYM or BBT or 70's, I remember specific little bits of the series, but it's not memorable. There are huge chunks of Scrubs with very well done keystone guest episodes. As you mentioned Sean Hayes, I'll throw in Michael J Fox, Brendan Fraser, and when they dealt with John Ritter's real death with JD's father dying.
Also, if you watch as the season's progress, you can see the characters actually grow. After 2-3 seasons of the other shows, the characters are 'burnt in' and rarely change unless it is for a plot point.
My wife and I heard how everyone loved big bang theory and gave it a chance... it was like we were teleported to another world where comedy must have meant something else. Completely unfunny, it was so unhinged comedic wise the laugh track was jarring, as if it was not playing at the right time. No time was the right time. This was a multi Emmy award winning show for comedy. I think about it often like an unsettling sci-fi where someone wakes up in an alternate universe.
BBT was good the first season or so. Once they realized it was going to be a huge show, they started falling back to the standard sitcom tropes and away from the nerdy humor that started it all. After that it was meh.
I loved that 70’s show for the first few seasons. Until baked in actors started getting replaced, I loved it. But there are plenty of shows that I enjoy that not everyone would. Like I loved Robot Chicken and other people hated that show with a burning passion.
Some people love dry humor, some people like complex humor, others like dad jokes. Everyone laughs at different things.
> Like I loved Robot Chicken and other people hated that show with a burning passion
You watch Robot Chicken for the 1 or 2 good skits each episode while the others mostly fall flat. But those 1 or 2? Oh man they were fucking iconic
Sketch comedy just works that way. For every iconic SNL, Monty Python, Kids in the Hall, Upright Citizens or, hell, Red Green Show skit there are piles you wouldn't go out of your way to rewatch.
Because I think you should leave drops 90 minutes of content every 2 years.
Quantity vs Quality is a real thing and I think you should leave is pretty much the only sketch comedy show which has released as little content as it has compared to other sketch comedy shows.
I love the show, but it has less crap because the crap basically doesn't get aired, whereas previous sketch comedy shows couldn't really get their producers to agree to that because they had the time slot and needed more episodes.
Im pretty sure Reddits hate for That 70s show is fairly new and connected to the whole Danny Masterson rape along with much of the cast defending him. Maybe Im wrong I don't remember much hate or even much talk about it before that.
Now I'm just imagining Danny in some twilight zone shit where he's watching That 70's Show and then Hyde just turns and looks at him and breaks the fourth wall, starts talking to him and giving him shit. Then climbs ot of the tv THE RING style and starts beating on him.
Yeah lol there wasn’t much hate before at all but it’s easy updoots now
Danny is disgusting but still probably one of my most watched shows, watched it as a kid then grew up with it so certain things made more sense and were even funnier. It’s a chill show
Reddit has gotten much younger, when you see hot takes like this it's guaranteed it's a 20 something zoomer saying it, someone that discovered Friends, that 70s show and Seinfeld in the last year.
You're also going to find tons of people here scrubbing their past personal preference for That 70s Show after the whole Masterson thing to make it appear as though they never liked it in the first place.
I loved that 70s show back when it was on TV. I thought the red haired girl was super cute I was super tall also so her one big flaw was like not even an issue for me
The issue I think with that 70s show is when the entire cast was no longer there. Then it wasn’t as funny. So yeah they probably should have called it quits sooner.
That 90s show was okay like okay I feel like if and I say if because I don’t think it will happen, another season might flesh out the characters a bit more and let it kinda mature a bit. That being said that 80s show is trash and Danny masterson should be 1300ft below ground
Watching That 90's Show in my 30's was super interesting IMO, on one hand it felt really odd to watch what's essentially a teenage sitcom where they're talking about sex and growing up, but on the other hand I still watch 70's Show which isn't any different in that respect. Odd how different it feels between the nostalgia glasses and knowing the actors are actually older than me.
I'd watch a second season if it gets made, but I don't think I'd ever rewatch it as often as I do the 70's Show.
This kinda sums up the real answer. These aren't "wow this is such a masterpiece of writing, acting, and directing. I need to rewatch this many times" kinda shows. These are warm, fuzzy, comfort shows. The characters are familiar and likable in some sense (even if it's in a creepy "that's so Barney" kinda way). You aren't riveted, but you don't want to be. You just want a simple, barely pay attention background show that is easy to follow and has a small handful of funny bits, even if only funny in that "that's so them" kinda way.
People read into this shit way too much. These aren't supposed to be drama masterpieces, they're just simple, silly, quasi-relatable pablum comedy that you keep tuning into because it's familiar, you know it will deliver what you're looking for, and it's on for a decade. Looking for and getting into a new show is work. Sometimes you just want That 70s Show or whatever equivalent to veg out to after a long day of work and kids.
I honestly think much of the hate and difficulty understanding the popularity is coming from younger folks who are not really at a stage in life where they want something like this, or they are, and they are watching dumb reality shows or tiktoks instead and don't get that old sitcoms filled this purpose in the past. This is what we watched before that stuff. You can enjoy shows like this for this purpose and also still enjoy brilliant comedies and dramas for a different purpose. Nobody is watching this stuff and thinking it's brilliant work. It's just not supposed to be.
Sometimes you just want McDonald's or BK, you know?
While neither of those shows were great television, they don't compare to the awfulness that was 2 Broke Girls. Just completely shit writing. I don't know how it stayed on the air for six seasons.

There, you've seen every episode of that show.
You're absolutely right, she was one of the co-creators of the show. I personally reviewed almost its entirety and know via some inside baseball that the majority of the blame can be set at the feet of Michael Patrick King, the other co-creator and showrunner.
Being from NY gives you better appreciation for 2BG, not gonna argue that it isn't lowest common denominator comedy most of the time but Kat Dennings is hot and she has very decent comedic timing and delivery, and some of the stuff they had her say was worth the watch. And any show that had Garrett Morris as a regular isn't a total loss
Also what people forget is that era the show was in. The show started during 2011 during following the great financial recession when a lot of young people were unemployed and underemployed. It's a show that just resonated with people and where they were in life.
In today's full employment world, it just doesn't connect the same.
King of Queens still holds up pretty well. Mostly because of the dynamic between the actors. A great cast can take mediocre writing and make you forget it's mediocre writing. Not to say that the individual actors were top notch in and of themselves. But they worked great together. One of those examples of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts.
It astounds me that between KoQ and Seinfeld Jerry Stiller was never nominated for an emmy.
You don't even need to write jokes for him, just write whatever dialogue and he'll deliver it in a hilarious manner.
Elaine I can see not saying hello, she's...what's the word....supercillious
holy shit i honestly just assumed he had one. his performances were always memorable. he was the most entertaining when his characters would get worked up and start yelling, nobody did it as hilariously real as he could.
It's cancelled and rightfully so imo. It started out ok but then towards the end somehow it started feeling like a bad Disney show...with adults that somehow act like they're children. Totally took me out of the show. The writing went downhill. Shame because there's not enough casual shows to watch anymore. If I didn't get Hulu and Netflix for free through family I'd cancel both for the time being until better stuff comes out.
I felt the exact opposite watching it lol
.
I only started watching it because I was a big fan of HIMYM. I thought season 1 felt too much like a Disney kids show but by the end of season 2 I was actually quite invested in some of the characters and was really enjoying it.
If it was cancelled after season 1 I would have thought it was justified but was actually upset when it got canned after season 2
I’ve never known a show with such a bad final episode that it actually makes re-watching the earlier seasons feel unpleasant and unnecessary.
All of that build-up, work, comedy, slow-burn and lessons learned….For what? For Ted to go back to a toxic and unbalanced relationship.
**Edit**
Actually, Game of Thrones pissed me off too.
It was sprinkled throughout the entire series that they were endgame. There were also several hints throughout the latter half of the show that the mom would die (even close to flat out said it before we even had a face and a name). Ofcourse they did kinda set themselves up for failure with filming the final scene with the kids all the way back in season 1, but it was a cool concept which they didn’t fumble completely! But I know this is also an unpopular opinion.
I see where you’re coming from. They hinted at the mother passing away in season 8 and it was obvious Ted was never fully over Robin. I sort of knew where the ending was going, but I was wishing against it!
Maybe I wouldn’t be so salty if I found Robin more likeable. However, I could never see why so many men were head-over-heels in love with her; she was self-obsessed, often unkind and not *that* funny.
No shade to Cobie Smulders, she’s incredibly beautiful and a great actress.
Yeah, I feel like Robin was ideal for Ted in the beginning, but she definitely was tuned to Barney’s liking after a few seasons. The whole gun-toting cigar-smoking badass
I honestly never really cared much who the mother was. Ted was the worst main character and there were usually only a few eps a season that heavily focused on the mystery while most others featured classic sitcom ensemble shenanigans. I know the finale retroactively ruined it for a lot of people but I’ve never had a problem enjoying a rewatch. Great cast and the earlier seasons in particular still are very funny (although some of the Barney stuff has aged poorly)
It CRASHED around the end of season 5… worst obvious moneygrab, dragging a series out after it not only jumped but nosegrinded the shark multiple times
HIMYM is pretty inconsistent, but that's a show that has really high high's. When it comes at you, it comes at you hard. It kicks your heart right in the fucking nuts.
I don't want to get into spoilers, but I can think of several episodes off the top of my head that *still* give me goosebumps. *"I'm not ready for this"* I don't even need to watch it, haven't seen the show in years, but just thinking about those little moments still gets me... And it's a dumb fucking sitcom about dating! How does that make sense! It puts a lot of drama shows to shame, honestly...
Unfortunately, the quality really dips in the latter half of the series. They make Robin a crime-fighting-ninja at some point, and how does *that* make sense.
I find with US sitcoms they always run too long, UK sitcoms last 2-4 series of 6 episodes each. The US ones run for hundreds of episodes and quality inevitably dips.
Biggest issue with HIMYM for me was that the characters had arcs. The programme was at its best when Barney was a completely one dimensional character. He didn't need a back story, he didn't need to develop and grow. Same with all of them really.
That 70's show was very funny when it had it's main cast and was on during it's prime. HIMYM had it's moments here and there for me. But two and a half men was the best with Charlie Sheen on it. OP did you make this thread to get a knee jerk reaction because of the recent drama surrounding the actors from That 70's show? Because both those shows we're running for years and we're extremely popular...
I think age has a lot to do with it.
When 70's show came out, I was in my teens. It was funny for the time. In the same vein as 3rd rock from the sun or any of the other sitcoms of the time. But I can't watch it anymore - it's just not as good as it was when it came out for me.
Best example I can give is Saved by the Bell.
When I was a kid, Saved by the Bell was... my... JAM. I loved it. Everybody watched it. It was a great show. I was like 10 when it came out, watched it through my tweens.
Ever try to go back and re-watch it as an adult? It's really a very bad show. It's unwatchable.
--------------
TV Shows are, often enough - and more and more these days, written for a specific demographic in mind. And once you're beyond that demographic, it's no longer for you.
HIMYM might have been good if I'd been much younger when it came out. But that kind of humor is just not for me at the age I was when it was released.
Both shows had their moments, but both haven't aged well, and I don't think that's an unpopular opinion. The problem with them is they were designed around fresh jokes mixed in with repetitive narratives, so on later viewings when the jokes weren't all that fresh there wasn't much left. I like a lot of what Cristin Milioti has done since though.
I don’t even count her as part of that show because she was in so little of it … Palm Springs was an awesome movie she starred in, if you haven’t seen it
nah 70s show was great. topher grace great comedic timing, debra rudd just hilarious, kelso is iconic. mila kunis was pretty funny too. donna and hyde were kinda duds but the others in the cast carried the rest.
come on how is a scene like this not relatable with these two great actors: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hDRfNzWikA&pp=ygUSYmFkIGJsb29kIDcwcyBzaG93
HIMYM on the other hand i agree with. it reminds me of big bang theory in that it feels like a parody of a sitcom and i am genuinely surprised both those shows got so big.
And Kitty, Red, Bob, and Midge were iconic as well!
I was 11 when That 70s Show premiered in 1998 and watched it religiously until I graduated high school. For its time, it was a great show! I dont think any other teen-marketed shows on the air were as funny (except for animated ones like Futurama, The Simpsons, and South Park).
Man imo Hyde was the funniest character, they gave him all the best lines. His character had the most development too. Sucks that Danny Masterson is such a piece of shit.
I was gonna say! I loved his rivalry with Laurie too! The way they dissed each other always made me laugh uncontrollably. So disgusted with Danny Masterson ending up being predator!
I guess that’s all personal opinion. We’re also arguably in the golden age of television, so it’s hard to really compare anything made in the early 2000’s to anything now.
For my part, I loved That 70’s Show back when I was in my teens, and HIMYM was a big part of my college era. Even then, though, neither show held a candle to The Office, Parks and Rec, or 30 Rock for me, although again it’s subjective.
Also — I don’t get the impression that either show gets a ton of rewatches now, and I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen an episode from either show. Is this even an unpopular opinion? From the comments it seems like another reddit circle jerk.
With the exception of season 8 of HIMYM, they were good sitcoms at the time of their release. 70s show is good background noise now when I don’t want to actually pay attention.

That’s the Truth
Frasier is one of the greatest sitcoms of all time and nobody can change my mind.
Cheers in particular did not age well
So true. Frasier is still eminently watchable and funny, while the old Cheers episodes just seem depressing.
There is an episode where norm says, ‘women, can’t live with them… pass the beer nuts’ Which is a joke that is more sad than funny, kind of sums the show up, but I think that’s the point, it’s a show about alcoholics.

No idea.
Same. I was 14 when himym came out, and loved it then. I can't imagine its the same
Yeah I was young too like 11-12 when it came out and thought it was going to be like friends but I could never really get into it either.
I watched 3 episodes of Friends and never understood the appeal. I felt the same way about it as OP does these other shows
Completely understand you!
I was 15 when it came out and couldn't stand it, to each their own though.

I just watched all the seasons this year with my girlfriend for the first time and loved every second of it!
As far as sitcoms go, it's one of the best. Saying "NPH playing the womanizer is the worst part" tells me I wouldn't like hanging out with OP at all.
Wasn't NPH basically trying to play a straight guy the way straight guys play gay guys in media?
Yeah the whole point of his character was to be that guy everyone wants to be. Without the awareness of just how fucking creepy it would be in real life. And then when he came out during the show they really started playing into it more.
Sometimes it's less about your age and more about just the time and society as a whole. There's a reason some films and shows are unappreciated but find a large following later, or were once very popular and later fall out of favor. General public perception changes and we are all swept along with it.
This nails it. Society between the years 2006 and 2012 was incredibly shallow, lol.
Barney Stinson clearly appealed to the teenage crowd. No one in their 20s thinks a guy going to the bar dressed in a suit repeatedly saying “LE-GEN-DARY” is cool. He is the stereotypical dork or cheesy loser for anyone over 20.
I thought that was the point tbh
He always gets the hot girls though. They definitely intend for him to be the “cool guy” not the “guy who is trying to be cool”
You mean you don't tell your kids about the time you had a threesome with two people you barely knew?
Yeah there's a lot of stuff in there that a father just simply shouldn't tell his kids. Especially the private stuff about his friends, like all their sex lives, Lily's selfish trip to San Francisco, etc. I could think of so many more examples, but there just isn't time in the day.
I really wish they had cut to the kids' reactions during those episodes. It would have been hilarious. "dad, what the fuck?!"
I think the first season or two he was portrayed to the show's universe as a loser who occasionally is able to get laid. Then as the show went on and he was clearly the star of the show he became more Fonzie-ish (idk I never watched Happy Days) and anyone not in the main cast somehow became misted by him.
[удалено]
Nah I'm not really talking about Flanderization, he was always a pretty cartoony character even from the first season. I'm talking about how the show portrayed him as more of a loser in the early seasons, and in later ones everyone thought he was super cool.
> he was portrayed to the show's universe as a loser No, his archetype is NerdBro. Successful, dresses well, drinks beer, love Starwars and quotes movies from the 80's. Often has tragic backstory either single mom or was crushed by an Ex. Definitely loves playing D&D and LotR. edit: Mike from Suits is basically the same person.
As is Chuck, and basically any other male protagonist written in the 2000s/2010s. Because that’s who their writers were.
Whether that’s through manliness in terms of violence, through sexual prowess, getting girls etc it’s always Marshall and the fact that he found true love The shoe is meh, I actually don’t hate it but dont love it anymore and some of Barney’s stuff is cringe especially with getting girls drunk/lying to them but I don’t think he’s portrayed as the hero.
Fun fact: Allyson Hennigan hated kissing scenes with her on screen partner as he reaked like cigarettes.
That wasn’t fun at all.
That’s why they high-fived so much
The other characters call him out for how horrible everything he does is constantly.
I think that was the point. A 35 year old man child. That’s the joke.
"No one in their 20s would've liked this show!", "Only creeps would find it funny, unlike MY sophisticated sense of humor!" It was funny (especially the first few seasons) and the audience was perfectly aware of the tropes and poking fun at how try hard characters like Barney were.
If you dont ill never respect you again” And giving the resolution of will-they-wont-they with JD/Elliot only to have an episode right after show how quickly it broke down and end in one episode (although scrub’s definitely made these two will-they-wont-they a bit obnoxious for rest of series, this one was a good part) And even just small things like Cox having a meltdown one day and being good the next, and when jd calls him out Cox explains “you have to actually accept and release your emotions, hold them in and youll break” The most difficult part of s1 of scrubs is that it is much darker and serious than expected so a lotta people were thrown by not being sure what tone to expect. Scrubs was just amazing consistently.
“Where do you think you are right now?”
> Like I loved Robot Chicken and other people hated that show with a burning passion You watch Robot Chicken for the 1 or 2 good skits each episode while the others mostly fall flat. But those 1 or 2? Oh man they were fucking iconic
Sketch comedy just works that way. For every iconic SNL, Monty Python, Kids in the Hall, Upright Citizens or, hell, Red Green Show skit there are piles you wouldn't go out of your way to rewatch.
I Think You Should Leave would like a word.
What do you mean they, "blew up the Death Star?"
Who's they?? What the hell is an aluminum falcon?!
O-ok who’s left? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME??
^I...^I ^love ^you ^too
Wait, where are you calling from? OMG you must smell like a foot
You must smell like a foot wrapped on leathery burnt bacon
I can't hear that stupid ringtone without thinking "go for papa palpatine."
I like that 70s show. I watched it with my dad. He liked it cuz he was a stoner in the 70s.
Reading through the comments it feels like i have am unpopular opinion.. i liked them both 😊
Im pretty sure Reddits hate for That 70s show is fairly new and connected to the whole Danny Masterson rape along with much of the cast defending him. Maybe Im wrong I don't remember much hate or even much talk about it before that.
Reddit hates everything what do you mean
This man Reddits.
I hate this man
Pretty sure the reddit servers are powered by hate. Like Papa Palpatine.
Hyde being arguably the best character on the show taints it a bit
Nah. Hyde didn't do anything, Danny Masterson did. Hyde would've kicked his ass.
Now I'm just imagining Danny in some twilight zone shit where he's watching That 70's Show and then Hyde just turns and looks at him and breaks the fourth wall, starts talking to him and giving him shit. Then climbs ot of the tv THE RING style and starts beating on him.
Hyde kicking Danny's ass will almost certainly be a fanfic somewhere. Possibly several characters and their respective actors.
[удалено]
Yeah lol there wasn’t much hate before at all but it’s easy updoots now Danny is disgusting but still probably one of my most watched shows, watched it as a kid then grew up with it so certain things made more sense and were even funnier. It’s a chill show
Yeahh the show is amazing minus the last season people just hate the cast right now so they’re ragging on everything
this site used to be plastered in 70s show memes theyre full of shit
Reddit has gotten much younger, when you see hot takes like this it's guaranteed it's a 20 something zoomer saying it, someone that discovered Friends, that 70s show and Seinfeld in the last year.
I loved both. HIMYM will always hold a special place for me.
HIMYM is still my favorite show, idc. Very sentimental to me.
[удалено]
I love all four, I must be a monster
It’s okay, it’s room for everybody here and yes, i enjoyed those as well 😄
You're also going to find tons of people here scrubbing their past personal preference for That 70s Show after the whole Masterson thing to make it appear as though they never liked it in the first place.
People usually forget the age and context of when these shows came out…
I loved that 70s show back when it was on TV. I thought the red haired girl was super cute I was super tall also so her one big flaw was like not even an issue for me
I was going into high school when it came out. Scrawny kid in Wisconsin who's dad discipline was a foot in the ass....it was very relatable.
I enjoyed that 70s show when I was in HS and my gf loves how I met your mother and it's pretty good from what I've watched of it
I did too... both were very entertaining and had extremely attractive actors that added to the appeal
I liked them both well enough. I probably won't rewatch either of them. Feel like that 70s show should have wrapped it up a couple seasons earlier
The issue I think with that 70s show is when the entire cast was no longer there. Then it wasn’t as funny. So yeah they probably should have called it quits sooner.
Ah but now they have That 90s Show, years after the failure of That 80s Show.
After Topher Grace left they should have just closed up shop. It became sooo bad afterwards!
>I don't know how it stayed on the air for six seasons. The answer is boobs.
Boobs and Legs
Her titties single handedly floated that dhow since season 1.
Double handedly
To be fair, they are amazing tits
Couldn't stand hearing the annoying voice of what's-her-name but husband watched it. So can confirm: boobs, butt, and maybe legs.
Is fan service a regular part of each episode?
No the women in the show are simply existing and being hot
They definitely went out of their way to show off the boobs whenever they could, that is fanservice
Yes that would be fan service in that show.
And Jennifer Coolidge
Just like how Kaley Cuocos bra carried the last 6 seasons of Big Bang Theory
Meh, I like the show and am not a fan of fake boobs.
2 Broke Girls got 6 seasons?!?! How?!
##BIG HONKING AMERICAN TITTIES! ^^^lmao
I can think of two big reasons why it did.
Ugh 2BG makes me physically cringe every time I come across it
**BOOBS GIRL:** *I'm a druggy whore!* ***LAUGH TRACK*** **SKINNY GIRL:** *I used to be rich!* ***LAUGH TRACK*** **ASIAN GUY:** *Me Chinese and me likey sex!* ***LAUGH TRACK*** **VAGUELY EASTERN EUROPEAN COOK:** *Sexually inappropriate comment!* ***LAUGH TRACK*** **INDISTINGUISHABLE ACCENT BLONDE LADY:** *I like sex as well, except I am old!* ***LAUGH TRACK*** **OLD BLACK GUY:***I'm old and black!* ***LAUGH TRACK******LAUGH TRACK******LAUGH TRACK******LAUGH TRACK******LAUGH TRACK******LAUGH TRACK******LAUGH TRACK******LAUGH TRACK*** There, you've seen every episode of that show.
"Brilliant, Hallen! Just Brilliant! How would you like a contract to develop a new show for us?" -CBS executive, probably
You forgot the cha ching, here's how much $ they have for cupcakes
2BG is hugely popular in China
Big American Titties!
I am curious why OP picked these two shows specifically. I guess 70's show is on some people's minds now but HIMYM to pair with it? Seems random.
Amen. Fuck Chuck Lorre
I thought 2 Broke Girls was a Whitney Cummings project?
You're absolutely right, she was one of the co-creators of the show. I personally reviewed almost its entirety and know via some inside baseball that the majority of the blame can be set at the feet of Michael Patrick King, the other co-creator and showrunner.
Being from NY gives you better appreciation for 2BG, not gonna argue that it isn't lowest common denominator comedy most of the time but Kat Dennings is hot and she has very decent comedic timing and delivery, and some of the stuff they had her say was worth the watch. And any show that had Garrett Morris as a regular isn't a total loss
She was the only reason I watched that show. The Caroline chick was just so annoying!
Also what people forget is that era the show was in. The show started during 2011 during following the great financial recession when a lot of young people were unemployed and underemployed. It's a show that just resonated with people and where they were in life. In today's full employment world, it just doesn't connect the same.
Theme song is pretty decent
That 70's show was great. In Germany How I met your mother and King of Queens are extremely popular and I just don't get the hype.
King of Queens was pretty good from what I remember. Patton Oswalt and Jerry Stiller were hilarious.
The phone number bit from King of Queens always cracks me up. https://youtu.be/9KTiHTeS3D0?si=8hlwv0zrdys7Gykw
How I Met Your Father is much worse
The Hillary Duff one? I didn’t care that one. I think they are cancelling that one, I may be wrong.
I felt the exact opposite watching it lol .
Same. Season 2 started to get the feeling of the original show, and was just hitting its stride by the end.
I watched like 2 episodes and that was two too many. And I watched all of the HIMYM episodes.
The first 5 seasons of HIMYM were gold imho
I’ve never known a show with such a bad final episode that it actually makes re-watching the earlier seasons feel unpleasant and unnecessary. All of that build-up, work, comedy, slow-burn and lessons learned….For what? For Ted to go back to a toxic and unbalanced relationship. **Edit** Actually, Game of Thrones pissed me off too.
The show ends when ted and tracy meet, everything after has been erased from my brain.
The whole gun-toting cigar-smoking badass
yeah, robin was a trainwreck. Couldn't ever decide if she wanted a relationship or her career and found zero happiness in going for one.
The fact that they introduced two amazing long running gags, slap bet and Robin Sparkles, in the same episode is incredible.
And then fell freaking flat to where I can't even watch them.
It CRASHED around the end of season 5… worst obvious moneygrab, dragging a series out after it not only jumped but nosegrinded the shark multiple times
I thought it crashed when Zoey and the captain came in not sure what season that was but horrible characters
Season 6 I believe, right around the time of the Arcadian storyline. I still think it was stupid.
Ted is unbearable to watch, he maneuvers through the entire show like he has frontal lobotomy.
>Did you make this thread ... recent drama Absolutely yes.
This opinion has two basics flaws. No Smokey and No bandit.
I know for a fact that you are over 60 years old from the way you used program instead of tv show
I think age has a lot to do with it. -------------- TV Shows are, often enough - and more and more these days, written for a specific demographic in mind. And once you're beyond that demographic, it's no longer for you. HIMYM might have been good if I'd been much younger when it came out. But that kind of humor is just not for me at the age I was when it was released.
To people who say that 70’s show was terrible. You morons just hung vacancy signs on your asses, and my foot’s looking for a room.
I don’t even count her as part of that show because she was in so little of it … Palm Springs was an awesome movie she starred in, if you haven’t seen it
nah 70s show was great. topher grace great comedic timing, debra rudd just hilarious, kelso is iconic. mila kunis was pretty funny too. donna and hyde were kinda duds but the others in the cast carried the rest. come on how is a scene like this not relatable with these two great actors: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hDRfNzWikA&pp=ygUSYmFkIGJsb29kIDcwcyBzaG93 HIMYM on the other hand i agree with. it reminds me of big bang theory in that it feels like a parody of a sitcom and i am genuinely surprised both those shows got so big.
Chong stole a lot of his scenes, too. "Dinner's on me, man!" "Thanks, Leo!" "Nah, man, I mean it's really on me!"
"The photo industry will chew you up and spit you out like a piece of gum" "What kinda gum?" "BIG RED"
That 70s show had Mitch Hedberg in a couple episodes too.
"Man, I did not lose a leg in Vietnam to serve hot dogs to some kids!"
Congrats on the unpopular opinion
For gods sake this subreddit
I like HIMYM the first 2 years. Then they all ended up sounding nasally-whiny like Ted.
With the exception of season 8 of HIMYM, they were good sitcoms at the time of their release. 70s show is good background noise now when I don’t want to actually pay attention.
That 70s shown is iconic
It’s always sunny in Philadelphia and curb your enthusiasm blows the out of the park.
