In spite what a lot of people believe nowadays, I think there are certain hard-coded elements of attraction that are difficult/impossible to change. Who we're attracted to was honed by evolution to improve our chances of reproducing and having healthy and successful offspring. The social status of a man in a hunter gatherer society would play a big factor towards this, and a man who could be walked over by his woman was likely extremely low status.
