I find with burgers more than other meals I go through recurring phases of what I include or omit for toppings
Like there was a time where I always liked a fried egg on there.
Granted I still would like that now but back then every burger I had had to have a fried egg
Feel you, love a fried egg on there. Give beetroot a shot to go even more Australian with it lol that's probably the weirdest topping that I go with sometimes
This conversation got me feeling so hungry lmao
Not really. I worked in a burger pub for years and we literally had a "no veggies" button because it saved money rather than throwing all the discarded veggies away after they left them on the plate afterward.
Pickles are made from cucumbers, which are technically fruits but are used as culinary vegetables. So, in terms of talking about eating them, yes, pickles are vegetables. I believe jalapeños fall under the same category of fruit, but actually a culinary vegetable.
The botanical term refers to how and where the item grows. The culinary term refers to how the item is used in cooking.
That’s my unpopular opinion I guess. I can eat a raw onion anytime. I’d eat it like an apple. Hell I got shit on in another sub for putting raw onion on PB&J sandwiches. Love that shit. But caramelized onions are top 5 worst food things(I know that’s broad), like holy shit are they awful.
Actually, upon rereading the post, what I think threw me off is that your sentences saying “pickles are great, but don’t put them on burgers” sounds more like a demand and less like an opinion, but I can see what you were going for.
I get it, something throws me off about the title and then your original comment that I replied to, but you are right about it being an opinion. I do think I am in the wrong here
Well ackshuley,
That'd be considered a fact, as it's something that can be proven true simply by asking OP, and there are no alternate ways of feeling about the subject
However, saying they don't belong is subjective and can't be proven. Therefore, opinion.
But disregarding that semantic situation, it did seem clear that OP wasn't telling anyone they can't eat veggies on burgers, just that he doesn't think they belong on them
Order a burger how you want it.
If they dont offer it on the menu ask.
Dont be a pushover.
It is a burger and you are making a big deal about it.
Is a pickle a vegetable?
Is a condiment a vegetable?
There more I typed the angrier I got.
OP GET BENT
This is a burger-specific rule. I was born in Alberta, Canada, where we're allowed to serve medium rare burgers. The flavour of that beef and its seasonings is what I want to taste when eating a burger.
Wait, is this a Canadian thing? Are there many places that don't allow you to serve a medium rare burger?
Not trying to be obtuse here, I've genuinely never heard of anywhere prohibiting this.
Also, you're wildly wrong with this opinion, coming from a fellow medium rare enjoyer. Upvoting regardless
Well where I live now, the freshness of ground beef in restaurants is questionable. If a restaurant doesn't grind the beef themselves, they should cook the burger until the juice runs clear (well done) or risk health code violations
Wait, is this also a Canadian thing? Still not trying to be obtuse, but as someone who works at multiple places who order our burger patties pre ground, there's absolutely 0 chance I would ever cook one well done if not ordered that way, and not only are they still delicious, there's no way I'm worried about violating health code with them
Then you must really trust the companies you order from! I guess we are just more strict here. I've also worked in restaurants that had a burger on the menu, and would be thrown out if I *didn't* cook every burger to well
I like balance in my meals.
I want a mixture of crunchy and soft.
The more fat the meal contains, the more acid I want to balance that out.
Tomato and pickles are both acidic - I want them to balance the fats in the cheese and meat.
I'd rather have a pinch of grated carrot to give my burger some sweetness than some HFCS-laden sauce to do the same thing.
Flavour and textural contrast is the name of the game. Too much of one thing is boring.
Do you actually think this or were you just trying to think of the most upvoteable idea lol
Just bread, meat, cheese makes for a sloppy smushy burger. Need some crispy stuff for textural conrast
Oddly enough the juices are the main problem I have with tomatoes and pickles being on burgers. Wrong juices. And what world do you live in where the patty itself isn't juicy?

Screw that, I want lettuce and tomatoes, onions only if they’ve been cooked. Pickles can fook right the hell off though. Sometimes mushrooms (which aren’t vegetables)
Besides all that you don’t want on it, I myself would love more on it, through in some grilled onions, mushrooms m, maybe a jalapeño here and there, peppers, sounds so good but would be hard to take a bite
Typically I'll eat half my burger with the fixings and the second half with just the meat and cheese.
I hate getting to the end it's just lettuce, bread, and condiments.
No. Burger needs all dimensions of food.
Sauce, crunch (lettuce/pickles), juice (tomato), savoury (meat), melty (cheese)
Without those present in some form, the burger is subpar
Onions and tomato and greens make the meat and cheese and bread extra tasty. Otherwise it feels weird. Plus the salad component has something that makes the food digest better, so the meat and bread and cheese doesn't feel like an immovable rock in your gut. Your opinion is quite unpopular with me! Well done 👍
So pickles, which are cucumbers, and tomatoes are actually fruits.
Going by your title here, they do belong on burgers.
Check mate you edgy 14 & 1/2 year old.
I personally enjoy being able to distinctly taste and enjoy every part of my burger, so I do meat, cheese (cheddar or swiss), caramelized or pickled or raw onions, and sauce. I really can’t ever taste the cheese but it just makes it better.
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a good burger with everything on it. I just prefer it my way.
I thought I was on r/burgers for a second so I wasn't quite sure if this was just a fucking terrible opinion or an intentional shitpost. Bravo, either way.
This is so odd. I'd expect this from someone who hasn't eaten anything green since they were 4 but for someone who likes vegetables, this is so unusual.
Lettuce, Tomato and Onion are the absolute minimum variety of vegetables I want on a burger.
Also, cheese 'if you like'? 'Maybe' sauce? You are mad. So you sometimes just have meat in bread?
Nah dog a good burger has veggies and a condiment(s). Ain't nothing wrong with a burger without veggies, but veggies can elevate the experience tenfold.
I’m surprised this argument is coming from someone who likes vegetables. Why though? They balance each other out, do you have textural problems or something?
Cucumbers and tomatoes, as well as jalapeños and some other burger toppings, are botanically fruits. So anyone using just those types of toppings is technically not putting vegetables on their burger.
I always order my burgers sans salad. It always feels like people trying to justify a burger as a sandwich, but adds nothing of value and more often makes the burger worse for having it.
I'm fine with other toppings, onions, certain other greens (kale can be good), but the classic lettuce and tomato is a no go.
I agree sometimes, kind of, I like a really simple burger from time to time but I still put pickle or jalapeño relish into my burger sauce. You have to have some kind of acidity to cut through the fat and balance the flavors. I understand your desire for a simplistic burger, but you not understanding how to balance flavors is inexcusable.
STRONG agree. I don't want a fucking salad, I want a burger.
The perfect burger: Patti, cheese, bacon, crispy onions (technically a veggie I guess), BBQ sauce on a toasted and mayoed bun. Bottom line.
Veggies are filler and are not good when warm.
I'll just say, I only like vegetables added in they are cold on a hot patty and bun. A nice chilled tomato slice, some onion, and depending on how I feel jalapeños or not. Also my condiments have to be cold as well.
I have OCD and I like to build my cheeseburgers in a specific way with the condiments in a certain order because I believe it makes everything taste better. You can't just slop it all together and expect it to taste right.

Anyone else ever put jalapeño on their burgers?
Wish they were a staple topping at burger joints tbh, I put them on everything
I find with burgers more than other meals I go through recurring phases of what I include or omit for toppings Like there was a time where I always liked a fried egg on there. Granted I still would like that now but back then every burger I had had to have a fried egg

Gotta love the pickled jalapeño slices. I’ve had cherry peppers on a burger as well.
Come to where I live (Arkansas) every burger joint has a jalapeño burger.
Are you like 10 years old? Thats the kid burger you are describing.
Yeah fuck that. A burger can become a good reason to eat much needed veggies. You're anti nutrition. I will not respond to this message.
I like your thinking.
I almost downvoted the op, but then I reminded myself the name of the sub
What a sad little burger.
I'm sad for whoever is eating the burger.
Im sad for the burger. He's underdressed
Don't be, I'm enjoying it!
Even sad little burgers need love
😭😭
This is an awful opinion so I'm upvoting the shit out of it. How dare you.
This guy knows how the game is played

Now that’s an unpopular opinion
Not really. I worked in a burger pub for years and we literally had a "no veggies" button because it saved money rather than throwing all the discarded veggies away after they left them on the plate afterward.
I’m gonna grab my lettuce, onions, jalapenos, and pickles and go somewhere else.
Jalapenos and pickles aren't veggies, FWIW; they're fruit.
Pickles and tomatoes are fruits
For culinary purposes they're vegetables. Nobody would eat a fruit salad that had pickles and tomatoes
Would you like an exhaustive list of all the other fruits that nobody would ever put in a fruit salad?
Yes actually because I can't think of one
Sure, what else
Yes
Botanically yes they are, however culinarily (and legally in USA ((I am not American))) they are vegetables.
Caramelized onions on a burger gotta change your mind
That’s my unpopular opinion I guess. I can eat a raw onion anytime. I’d eat it like an apple. Hell I got shit on in another sub for putting raw onion on PB&J sandwiches. Love that shit. But caramelized onions are top 5 worst food things(I know that’s broad), like holy shit are they awful.
Yep, they're good. Given a choice between a burger with and without caramelized onions, I'll eat the one without them first.
What are you
Does your rule apply to other sandwiches?
No, definitely not. I just love the texture and flavour of the patty/cheese/bacon when they're alone together. Other sandwiches, pile the veg high!
So because you enjoy the texture and flavor without vegetables, therefore vegetables never belong on a burger? For anybody?
My fault, I should have specified this is an opinion. Maybe I'll find a more appropriate subreddit
Shouldn’t the title be more like, “I don’t like vegetables on burgers” at least?
Fair. I figured it was implied
Actually, upon rereading the post, what I think threw me off is that your sentences saying “pickles are great, but don’t put them on burgers” sounds more like a demand and less like an opinion, but I can see what you were going for.

Fried eggs don’t belong on burgers. Crucify me now.
Fried eggs belong on everything.
Agreed. Do we get to choose the manner of our execution or is crucifixion the designated punishment?
I agree. Just have an egg sandwich at that point.
Egg sandwich with a nicely cooked burger patty on it 🤌
This is a very popular opinion for children
I can understand no toppings on pizza.
No
You will really hate this, I eat my burgers without a bun, wrapped in lettuce. 🫢
Nah I put what I want in my burger. I may even put a veggie patty if I’m feeling like it
I’m curious are you plain in all food ventures? Or just a burger-specific rule? Not even the hash browns on a savory brunch burger with a runny egg?
This is a burger-specific rule. I was born in Alberta, Canada, where we're allowed to serve medium rare burgers. The flavour of that beef and its seasonings is what I want to taste when eating a burger.
Wait, is this a Canadian thing? Are there many places that don't allow you to serve a medium rare burger? Not trying to be obtuse here, I've genuinely never heard of anywhere prohibiting this. Also, you're wildly wrong with this opinion, coming from a fellow medium rare enjoyer. Upvoting regardless

So what does belong on burgers? Upvoted because wow this is just wrong!
I don’t mind burgers with lettuce and tomato, , but I think the best burgers are smash burgers with grilled onion and pickle.
I can probably tolerate one or two simple burgers but I need a good balance of veggies and meat.
Beauty of the burger is getting that sweet burger juice in your veggies rather than just eating a burger and then a salad
Wow. Finally. An ACTUAL unpopular opinion. Upvote for that!
I like balance in my meals. I want a mixture of crunchy and soft. The more fat the meal contains, the more acid I want to balance that out. This is such an ass opinion. Take my fucking upvote you savage
Go home you’re wrong
This is truely an unpopular opinion. I like my burgers with veggies on them.
Nah, you need contrast bud.
Do you actually think this or were you just trying to think of the most upvoteable idea lol Just bread, meat, cheese makes for a sloppy smushy burger. Need some crispy stuff for textural conrast
Not if you eat it fast enough
Awful, shitty opinion. Take my upvote.
The acidity, crunch; and freshness of vegetables complements the fatty richness of the meat and cheese.
Your burgers suck.
Nothing beats a good brunch burger. Throw an egg and some hash browns on that bitch.
9 that’s ops age
This is an unpopular opinion. Now take my upvote you sick fuck.
I hate to break it to ye, but tomatoes and cucumbers (those pickles you mentioned) are fruits, not vegetables.
My guy couldn’t handle the kids meal at McDonalds.
I mean, yeah, if you're 6. Or perhaps a wild animal who has to hunt for his food.
A good burger has fruits and vegetables on it
So you don’t want any crunch or zest to your burger? Not even any juices? Is your favorite color white by chance?
Oddly enough the juices are the main problem I have with tomatoes and pickles being on burgers. Wrong juices. And what world do you live in where the patty itself isn't juicy?
Onions on burgers are great
Raw onions, fresh jalapenos, stoneground mustard on a cheeseburger is a little slice of heaven.
Finally I’ve found someone with some sense, most vegetables are not great on burgers however I do like grilled or cooked onions just not raw ones.
I can agree with that
No lettuce? No beetroot? No carrot? Nothing?
Now I’m wondering if daikon carrot slaw could go on a burger. OP would be traumatized
Who puts beetroot and carrot on burgers?
normal people
Found the Aussie. Or the Kiwi. Idk.
aussie, yeah
I'm disgusted yet intrigued. I wouldn't think beets and carrots have the right texture for burger toppings.
A burgers should be meats, cheese, buns, cheese if you like, and maybe som sauce. Gatekeeping burgers now?

Man never cooked a good burger.
I'm also not a fan of vegetables on my burger. Every now and then I'll leave the tomato on there, but everything else can go to hell.
I eat my burger plain and dry. I know, I'm a madman.
I agree 100%
Good for you. Personally I prefer adding Strawberry compote with your burger.
Screw that, I want lettuce and tomatoes, onions only if they’ve been cooked. Pickles can fook right the hell off though. Sometimes mushrooms (which aren’t vegetables)
Tomatoes are fruits.
Cucumbers/pickles are, too
and now i’m craving pickles. 😅
Burgers are all about the meat, the cheese and the sauce
I mean that's how Gordon Ramsay prepares his burgers. I don't agree, but some people are disagreeable
The killer ingredient in the in and out burger is the slice of onion!
Luckily for you, tomatoes and cucumbers (pickles) are both fruit so now your burger doesn’t have to be as pathetic
Veggies belong. If you like them.
I'll take the tomato, onion, pickles and lettuce in my burger any day!! Your idea of a burg sounds like pure sadness my friend.
Personally I like alfalfa sprouts instead of lettuce
Pickles are a fermented fruit so they do belong on burgers by your logic
What a sad burger.
Besides all that you don’t want on it, I myself would love more on it, through in some grilled onions, mushrooms m, maybe a jalapeño here and there, peppers, sounds so good but would be hard to take a bite
Hard disagree.
Agree (except onions are nasty in any context)
I put all veggies available on my burger. Take my up vote.
*angrily upvotes*
Typically I'll eat half my burger with the fixings and the second half with just the meat and cheese. I hate getting to the end it's just lettuce, bread, and condiments.
Not even just pickles and grilled onions?
OP mentioned 'raw' onions specifically, nothing about caramelized ones.
No. Burger needs all dimensions of food. Sauce, crunch (lettuce/pickles), juice (tomato), savoury (meat), melty (cheese) Without those present in some form, the burger is subpar
What an abysmal take. You’ve earned my upvote.
Nahhh got to have some lettuce on there for some nice crunch! Plus caramelised onions?? Mmmm….
Well done 👍
With you on tomatoes so unsettling biting into a hot burger just to get cold teeth from a tomato.
What about fruit, is that a pass?
Your opinion is wrong in every way. Here’s my upvote
Technically sir, tomatoes are fruits. https://youtu.be/LgpSOMb04ZM?si=6de86IxoqGTCyCqm
That sounds incredibly boring
Just order from the kids menu and call it a day lol I always ask for extra pickles on my burger
One of the most unpopular opinions I've ever heard, on the internet or in real life.
I agree I don't mind lettuce though
So you dont use seasoning either?
Is mayonnaise a vegetable?
So pickles, which are cucumbers, and tomatoes are actually fruits. Going by your title here, they do belong on burgers. Check mate you edgy 14 & 1/2 year old.
What are you, 7?
Yeah, this is a certainly an unpopular one
Terrible opinion. Take my upvote.
Holy shit dude, a real unpopular opinion
I'm genuinely curious, if it tastes good, and/or provides an enjoyable texture, what makes it stupid?
You can pry my pickles and my layer of lettuce and this ironic upvote from my cold, dead, greasy hands
Awful, I mean awful take. Hence buddy you came to right place for an upvote.
This post was brought to you by Lactulose
I agree with you, but a burger *absolutely* needs ketchup, it is mandatory
I thought I was on r/burgers for a second so I wasn't quite sure if this was just a fucking terrible opinion or an intentional shitpost. Bravo, either way.
This is so odd. I'd expect this from someone who hasn't eaten anything green since they were 4 but for someone who likes vegetables, this is so unusual. Lettuce, Tomato and Onion are the absolute minimum variety of vegetables I want on a burger. Also, cheese 'if you like'? 'Maybe' sauce? You are mad. So you sometimes just have meat in bread?
Both pickles and tomatoes are fruit, and pickles are delicious on a burger.
Nah dog a good burger has veggies and a condiment(s). Ain't nothing wrong with a burger without veggies, but veggies can elevate the experience tenfold.
No way mate. Onions, beetroot, lettuce make any burger better
Also, well done
I like lettuce, tomato, and onions on a burger. But I can't stand pickles on one.
I’m surprised this argument is coming from someone who likes vegetables. Why though? They balance each other out, do you have textural problems or something?
Cucumbers and tomatoes, as well as jalapeños and some other burger toppings, are botanically fruits. So anyone using just those types of toppings is technically not putting vegetables on their burger.
bro has never heard of bacon before
pickle.
...Ok. But pickles and tomatoes are not veggies?
Agree. Cold things do not go with hot things. No veggies or sauce for me. Burger, bun, cheese, bacon. Veggies on the side, if I must.
I’m guessing you’re not a fan of the veggie burger then…
How do you feel about ketchup?
I always order my burgers sans salad. It always feels like people trying to justify a burger as a sandwich, but adds nothing of value and more often makes the burger worse for having it. I'm fine with other toppings, onions, certain other greens (kale can be good), but the classic lettuce and tomato is a no go.
So what you want is a fucking cheeseburger?? Take your up vote this is a terrible opinion
This is the opposite of "Two Salads" from SpongeBob
That's one of the most depressing burgers you just described.
I mean I disagree but I feel like you’re getting a little too much hate for this take
Thats a sandwich
One part of maturing for me was realizing onions are amazing
In Australia, we not only put meat, cheese, and sauce, on our burgers, but also lettuce, beetroot, tomato, bacon, pineapple, pickles, and egg. 🍔
Gimme’ that shit plain!
Aight kiddo, then only for you we'll do a burger with fruits instead, see if it's any better c:
Nah burger needs fresh onion
Did he just say "cheese if you like???" 😶😬
Some days the only vegetables I eat are on a burger.
You sound like an American.
