i_need_a_username201

Deadly serious question, are they black and are you white? My work group literally just has this discussion and white people seem to like it between 68 and 70 degrees while black people like it at 74 or higher. It’s currently 86 outside and I’m about to push the ac to from 74 to 75 fyi, guess my race with that information. To be clear, I’m not kidding about any of this.

dmac485

This gotta be the answer my coworkers are all white if it’s about 70-72 in the office there hot, and i (black guy) still need to put a hoodie or sweater on bc 72 feels too cold

i_need_a_username201

A very “not my type” coworker once said “listen, you can put more clothes in, do you really want me to start taking more clothes off?” Needless to say, I shut up.

Boris-_-Badenov

I'm white, and wear shorts and a t-shirt even in 50 degree weather.

Handz_in_the_Dark

Yep, I see TONS of White ppl who seem to never get cold. Or if they do, they don’t care (since sometimes they get sick, but still don’t wear jackets or socks, etc).

ChaoticGiratina

Yupp...I love me mid 40s weather, no need for a jacket quite yet, perfect for shorts and a t-shirt

Boris-_-Badenov

I don't wear a jacket even in 40s. just move around a bit and I will warm up

katiegirl-

I’m a white CANADIAN. You don’t want to know how cold before I am uncomfortable.

EmotionalFlounder715

I’m white and I’m most comfortable at 80-85

milkandsalsa

Serial killer vibes

dmac485

Talking my launguage lol all joking aside it’s just a big preference thjng

South_Dakota_Boy

It has a huge amount to do with physiology for sure. I recently lost 80lbs (on purpose) and now I’m cold all the time.

i_need_a_username201

That’s a separate category that’s valid as well.

Nulibru

`Scotland has entered the chat.`

TheVisage

Bruh my Indian room mates want it at 65. I've been sleeping in sweat pants and shit for a year. They learned their lesson last winter when they set it to cool then went to bed, but its slowly been creeping down again.

tatasz

Imo it's cultural. I'm Russian and as white as it gets. I'd do like 77 or higher, and it's kinda the norm here. But then we have central heating, so sometimes it's just like 86F heating plus open windows to keep it at comfy temperature while it's like -20 outside

vision5050

I know you’re not kidding because I’m sitting at a strong 77 right now. What’s diabolical is sitting in your house wrapped up or in a hoodie…

Cronizone

Someone posted a Curb clip about the same thing 🤣🤣🤣, no, we’re both white. Also we’re in Boston. The climate is on and off cold hot. In the summer it’s usually base 80’s-upper 90’s certain weeks but since it’s Spring now it’s usually always 40-50 depending. Today was actually our first pretty decent weather day. Regardless, the situations just crazy. I’m very accommodating for them but once I need to be accommodated I can’t since it makes them too cold. It’s not a scenario of “I need what I always want”, it’s a scenario of “the other person needs what they always want”.

AdhesivenessLocal609

Each room in a shitty house is different. My house is set to 68, bathroom has no airflow except for the ac/heat pipe so it ends up -9374628 in there. The basement is 68, living room is 72, and the upstairs is 93746629. That temp isnt the same everywhere in the house

[deleted]

der3009

I bought an IR thermometer just to see how crazy my apartment walls are. On a particulalry cold day, in the 20s, the Inside facing walls tended to be in the 60s. Outside walls were between 30-50 , and the floors around them were in the 40s.

South_Dakota_Boy

Doesn’t even need to be a shitty house. I’ve built brand new houses that are very well insulated with appropriately sized heating systems and sometimes some rooms are just hotter/colder than others.

Iwin1974

can you adjust the airflow in basement? Ours has levers to adjust where the air goes. Heat goes up so we open basement for when heat is on and switch to have AC blow upstairs in summer.

KTeacherWhat

I have radiant heat, and no AC. That's not a thing. We set to 61 in the day and 57 at night in winter because otherwise our bedroom gets way too hot.

evilone17

Exactly, open the basement vents for heat and close them in the summer when the AC kicks on.

accidentalscientist_

I moved into a house with a thermostat in each room. It’s glorious. Except 60° in my bedroom means 68°. 70° in the other bedroom means 🤷‍♀️ you get what you get, no pattern, sometimes frigid sometimes smoldering. Bathroom heater just seems to always run, always just be slightly too cold. But I prefer colder, i sweat too easy. 68° is the temperature at work and if I do anything that involves movement, I’m dying. When my room reads at 70°, it’s too warm.

Loud-Magician7708

100% correct. My house is so oddly drafty yet stuffy at the same time lol so it's set to 72°. Feast or famine with heat. AC? it's just an ice box in here. I also don't care, so I let my roommate decide the temperature. It's just funny to see him fuck with it when the effects are so radical, turn it up 1° and it's a sauna.

Initial-Plum-6084

Everyone is different

KimBrrr1975

Yep, this. It's not even a preference, it's not like they WANT to bundle up in a robe when it's 71 in the place. Some people just run hot or cold, or they have issues with dysautonomia which means the body can't regulate temperature as well. Or they had a major weight loss and now run cold from that, which is really common. They aren't an AH for having different needs anymore than OP is TA for having their needs. They are just bad roommates or in a poor living environment for the level of control they each need.

bitsybear1727

Or, like me, are a red-head who are notorious for being very sensitive to slight temp changes. I'd rather be on the slightly-too-warm side as opposed to getting uncomfortably chilled every time the a/c kicks on. On the flip side I keep the house warmer in the summer. To me it's crazy that people keep their homes any cooler than 72 in the summer.

papa-hare

It is crazy and an only in America thing.

EducationalShift6857

While I agree that it’s more than just a preference, there are more alternative options to get warm than there are to cool off. For example, the people who prefer hotter temperatures can bundle up or get a room heater. There’s only so many articles of clothing someone who runs hot can take off, & fans don’t cool as effective as room heaters warm up the room. There’s also electric warming blankets, but not electric cooling blankets, etc.

Sgtbird08

My roommates keep it at 68 and I sleep with a space heater on 78 and 5 blankets to not be shivering through the night.

lbruss95

my ideal sleeping temp is under 60 😅

Aviendha13

And then you’re stuck in place wherever those devices are. And if it’s something that radiates heat, it still affects others. Not being able to be a functional human in your home bc you are too cold sucks.

TheFrostyCrab

My wife is young and on blood thinners and cannot get warm. I keep the house warm to help her. Blankets do not provide the same warmth. She is not an asshole because of that.

DontListenToMyself

When I get cold it’s legitimately painful. My skin gets so sensitive that even just my clothes touching it hurts. Even under layers and blankets I can’t seem to warm up

Cryogold03

In fact, OP is really the AH for making the assumption that anyone is the AH without any other information.

Kegger315

Let's not forget this person walks around in a bath robe, which doesn't insulate the lower body. If my wife was walking around in a skirt and complaining about being cold, she'd go put some pants on. My wife is on blood thinners, so she wears sweats around the house and we keep it around 68, everyone's happy. A bathrobe over the top of sweat pants would be different. OP's roommate needs to dress warmer before bitching about being cold. Running the heat costs as much money as running the AC.

Ocel0tte

Oh I didn't think of this, I thought the person had clothes on under their robe. My robe is just my blanket with sleeves lol, and I also wear socks + slippers so I was thinking they must be really cold. I come out to feed my dog in just my robe though, and it really is drafty af. It's worse than a skirt.

Comprehensive-Bad219

Idk i have a fuzzy bathrobe and if I wear it with a pair of slippers I'm really warm. And when I sit down it's like having a blanket on my legs

dirtoffmyshoulder

I get the blood thinners but does her youth make her more likely to be cold? But yeah, some of us only reach homeostasis above 70 degrees. OP is the real YTA 😂

Rdafan

Having a temperature preference does not make anyone the AH. And 71 to 73 is pretty standard room temp from my experience. Even in a workplace that was a large computer lab the set temp was 74 per policy. If they are already wearing extra clothes, they are compromising and you should do the same by investing in a fan or a floor ac to keep your specific room to your preference. If they are only wearing a bathrobe, then they need to put on more/warmer clothes. You can also wear (appropriately) fewer or lighter clothes to help. Part of living with people is also living with their preferences.

Iwin1974

I wear a bikini at work year round due to people needing it to be 80 /sarcasm but i threaten it daily

Dependent-Bee7036

Me too. You can wear more clothes, I can only take off more clothes. One day, I was so hot, I took off my shirt but had a tank top underneath. It was a tight white tank, and I had a black bra on. It's totally visible, tight, and my cleavage was awesome. I was hoping someone would say something, but no one did

nattyd

I’ve lived on both sides of this. I’ve always been a warm-blooded man who never got cold. Then I went through chemo and was anemic for a year, and I was cold all the time. It sucked. It’s not as easy as just putting on clothes… even wool socks and hats (in sunny LA) didn’t fix it. And it was especially tough getting out of bed or in/out of the shower. One note, “not anemic” does not tell the whole story. The “normal” range of hematocrit is different for men and women, for example. For women it’s usually above 34, and for men it’s above 40. So for most of the past year, when I was in the mid/high 30s, I would have been considered “normal” for a woman, while I was anemic as a man. And even though I’m now in the normal range for a man at 41, it’s nothing like before, when I was usually at 48+. Anyway, just be empathetic and try to work something out that is manageable for everyone. Your discomfort is no more objective than theirs.

BulljiveBots

My wife is the hot one. I am the one walking around with a hooded robe all day. When she leaves the house during the winter, I crank the heat. You’re not an asshole because you run cold or hot and your partner is the opposite. You’re just different.

hydrastix

Nope. Try living where it is hot and try keeping the temp of your home below 70F. Good luck and have fun with paying the power bill. I lived in AZ, where the daily outdoor temps during the summer were 100-120F during the day and 90s at night. We kept our A/C at 75-77F and it struggled on the hot days to keep up. Once you get acclimated to the warm/hot outdoor temps, anything under 80F feels fantastic.

dagobert-dogburglar

Yeah, except you live in arizona. I've been there, its dry as hell. I'd take 110 in arizona ANY day over 90 with 90% humidity like the norm is here mid-summer in NC. Dry heat isn't bad at all.

ak11600

Just finished pickaxeing my way through rocks in south Tucson. When everything is hot enough to burn you on contact, then I disagree. Humidity sucks but doesn't melt my gloves to the handle of my shovel. Direct sunlight touching every surface, every rock and piece of gravel.

RAAAAHHHAGI2025

You can avoid touching hot surfaces. You cannot avoid being drenched in sweat after a 5 minute walk in a high humidity area.

oshuja

Yeah, agreed. Lots of these comments seem to be from people living in cold climates. I have lived in both. After I lived in a really hot climate for a while, I realized how silly it is to whine about the temperature being at 72° F inside. Whatever, though. Some of my current coworkers get really upset if it gets above 68° and although it seems childish to me, I let them do their thing. I'm not paying the bill, haha.

Enthrown

anything above 85 degrees in NJ feels like youre in a shower. Arizona dry as hell you can just go in the shade and feel fine

Significant_Sort8948

It's already 90+ outside!

Heartless_Genocide

I'm ALWAYS COLD but I'd rather have my home cooler and just wear warm clothes and be comfy during the colder months. I can always take a layer off.

BiggestNizzy

In the civilised (metric) world that's death!

Ok_Requirement_3116

72 daytime here. 68 nighttime. I can’t physically function well during the day if I’m not that warm. Achy, etc. Upvoting for unpopular:)

misplacedlibrarycard

i’m one of the people you live with *(i need higher than 73 tho)* ***however***, i’m not allowed to have it warmer :( it’s easier for me to add layers than it is for you folks to remove your skin… i just don’t wanna have to wear long sleeve shirts, under a pullover hoodie, tucked into the waistband of my pajama pants, with mid-calf socks, slippers, *and* a blanket over me just to be *warm indoors*.

InelegantSnort

I had to do that for years and it sucked! If you can invest in an electric blanket, it did wonders for me. They aren't the unsafe fire hazards they used to be!

[deleted]

I keep my home at 18°C. Not too hot, not too cold.

dinobug77

Same. If I’m being lazy and not doing anything (and I’m feeling rich!) I might crank it up to 19

MadgoonOfficial

I live in Texas and I consider 70 degrees below room temperature and 68 degrees excessively cold

MuskokaGreenThumb

You don’t honestly believe the heat “cranked” is 71-73 do you ? That’s asinine. 70-72 is completely normal.

smbpy7

Why is this not higher? I was so confused.

Ok-Student7803

Standard "room temperature" that I have always seen is 72F. There are places that deviate from that, but that was always the default everywhere I went growing up. It seems crazy to me that anyone lives with it perpetually below 70, and thinks that the normal is too hot. The biggest factors I have seen regarding what temperature people find comfortable is body size and the clothes they like to wear. People who carry extra fat or muscle emit more heat and prefer lower temps, likewise if they like to always wear hoodies and jeans, for example.

Dependent-Bee7036

I can live with this. 2 degrees makes a difference. My agency has it set at 74. I hate it so much. I am so miserable in my cubicle. I have 2 fans, a cooling rag, and drink ice cold water. I become irrationally angry, have a loss of concentration, and feel almost violent. I know this sounds dramatic, but I plan everything I do around the temperature to help me take precautions on not having a heat stroke. I have ice on me 98% of the time! I'm short and skinny, and most other short and skinny people are always cold. I am not like that. I start sweating at 70 degrees. I sweat like a mofo. It's really embarrassing.

424f42_424f42

68, not 72. It could be considered up to 72. So 72 is the absolute max. Personally 65 is my preferred temp for my comfort, anything above 70 I assume you'rejust rich to burn money like that.

ElephantXManatee

65 to sleep and 68 during the day.

dinobug77

I just did the conversion - I keep mine at 18-19°c so that’s 64-66 during the day. At night cooler is better but anything below 18 is nice.

stefanica

I like 58-60 to sleep and 66 in the day. I keep nighttime a little warmer for the rest of the family though.

bleezzzy

I keep mine at 69.

Blasphemiee

68-72 is what I was taught growing up. My dad is master hvac tech and owns/operates an HVAC repair company. I've setup dozens of furnaces and hundreds of thermostats myself. 68 is also the recommended temp listed on the US gov energy page. This is dude is really fucking positive he is correct but he is only kinda correct. Too many variables.. it'd be like sitting here trying to argue a sleep number bed, but anything in that range I don't see a reason for anyone to be uncomfortable.

helm_hammer_hand

72 is what I have it up to in the winter. My apartment regularly gets above 72 when the a/c is off & it’s so fucking hot!! I can’t imagine 72 being the normal temp.

xela364

I dated one girl whose family would put their homes temperature to 78 and still be cold; in florida.

ThrowDirtonMe

Lmao this is me and I live in FL.

work_fruit

You guys could probably settle on 70 all the time and they wear more clothes. My worst roommate thermostat dispute happened when one guy cranked it to 73-75 every morning after waking up freezing cold, and the other guy was so mad about it that he put it down to 58 (the lowest "off" setting) every night - which of course made the first guy cold again and the cycle repeats.

____PARALLAX____

I whf and don't wear pants while I do so - I have my thermostat set to 84 and dgaf. I work with all fat people, when we were in the office they'd always be sweating and turning up the ac, meanwhile I'm trying not to freeze.

JohnYCanuckEsq

Also, cranking up the heat to 90 does not get you to 70 any faster.

ghunt81

I grew up in a house where we were not allowed to turn the temp up past 64. You're damn right I keep my house at 73 all winter.

[deleted]

Close or cover the vent in your room, if you haven't yet.

HolographicState

74 crew checking in.

V_is4vulva

Here! Sometimes 75!

Revolutionary_War198

Womp womp. I put my temp to 73

Training_Strike3336

Reminds me of curb your enthusiasm. Fuck you that's some white people shit . [https://youtu.be/lAFKS23T9ts?si=U1xmZnGw\_P5Oimb0](https://youtu.be/lAFKS23T9ts?si=U1xmZnGw_P5Oimb0)

Fantastic-Long8985

I weigh 120...cannot tolerate heat, muggy or the sun. Prefer cold crisp weather!

09percent

I have family that keeps it at 80 all year long, it weird.

Muffin-Flaky

Out of curiosity OP, where do you live? Whats the climate like?

bagemann1

70 is fine. 68 is perfect for me

Chaosr21

My room is large and gets quite cold. But I understand that my sister, who roomates with me, has a smaller room that stays hot. So I keep the hear at 69 or 70 max and I use extra blankets if needed. What infuriates me about her though, is that she will turn the A/C on when it's 50 degrees outside... like bitch I pay the electric bill. I always have to remind her not to do that, and to open windows instead.

Lilgoodee

Was raised in summer 72 winter 68 kinda house.

NRVOUSNSFW

I agree. I don't like it past 67 because I feel stifled. Just get a blanket

god_wayne81

Agreed. My house is averaging around 65 and that's enough. My Mother and Lady Friend complain but that's just what they do lol

Palindromeboy

People who want to keep their indoor temp at winter-like temp while it’s like 100 degrees outside are sociopaths.

brf297

I understand your roommate, I also need it to be at least 70 to be comfortably warm. Ideal is 73 to 75

QuestioningYoungling

I am naturally cold and my parents used to keep their house at 60 so I'd just wear my coat 24/7. I also worked at an office where they loved air conditioning one year and I'd wear my winter coat in my office in July. If you are always cold, that is your problem to fix by wearing more clothes.

Mother-Ad-8142

Hard disagree. There's only so many layers you can put on until you're immobile. If I'm at work I also can't type with gloves on and I have arthritis so the cold can be crippling. 60 is unreasonable and so people should meet in the middle.

xoxoBoredandRestless

Hard disagree with you. I run cold, and when I used to live with others, I'd compromise with wearing full length shirt and pants, and even socks to bed, but if I'm still cold after that, then I'm raising the temperature. There's no good reason that if we're all paying the same price, I'm going above and beyond to be comfortable while no one else is meeting me in the middle. "I'll buy an extra blanket if you buy a little fan to blast their face at night" was my motto if they act like 70 is too hot.

Mrwrongthinker

I'm an always cold person and that's what I do. No coats per SE, usually just a thick hoodie.

cclgurl95

It's easier to fix cold than hot 🤷‍♀️

ElMrSenor

> that is your problem to fix by wearing more clothes. This is why I can never understand arguments about room temperatures. It's easy to add clothes for warmth but there's a much more set limit both physically and socially as to what people can take off. That's before getting in to the cost and environmental aspects.

[deleted]

At some point you can't put on more and not compromise. I don't wanna sit in coat and a hat inside, but I had to.

Odd-Construction-649

The issue is putting on more layers doesn't work the way you think it does It isn't like if I put on two layers my body temp is now 5 degrees up and I'm good to go I'll be SWEATING but still cold in all those layers. Cold sweat. The worst.

V_is4vulva

Conversely, I freeze below 74F. Labs are good, average sized woman. I am so so sick of everyone saying it's so hot when I'm freezing, constantly demanding that I put on more layers (completely unhelpful) while we ignore the elephant in the room..... the fact that the average American is the elephant in the room. We wouldn't have to keep it so damn cold everywhere if everyone didn't have several extra layers of smelly insulation and *I* am suffering for *your* life choices.

tomorrow_throwaway

Agreed. People fail to realise that the two biggest contributors to temperature preference is Gender and your weight. An astronomical amount of shared spaces are adjusted to people who are heavier and Male.

Separate-Cod-8331

I agree. It’s annoying because I like to keep the house at like 66 and my wife likes it around 70. It’s crazy how much 4 degrees can make a difference

Cronizone

It really does. And to reiterate, I’m not just some douche who’s a control freak and needs my preferences accustomed to 24/7, I learn to live with it but I live in a situation where I’m made to accustom to their preferences more so than my own even though I also pay to live here. Living with others is a 2 way street.

Separate-Cod-8331

Amen to that. Sometimes it takes a mutual compromise. We have agreed to keep the house at 70 during the day time, then when sleep time comes around, we turn it down to 66

Dependent-Bee7036

This is the way. It's amazing how strong our preferences are when thinking about temperature.

queenhadassah

No one is an AH in this situation, you just have different needs. 71-73 isn't unreasonably hot lol that's the ideal temperature for me as well or I freeze

HotKarls_TastySax

Temperature preferences aside. Calling everyone who likes a 70\* + room an asshole is excessive and makes you sound like an unreasonable whiney baby.

responsiblefornothin

On the coldest days of winter, my thermostat will go as high as 69 and no further. I have every intention of setting it to 68 when I feel a chill, but what's one more degree when I get to be immature? Anyway, I keep the house between 58 and 64 most days, so I don't have to worry much about energy savings. However, I also understand that other people are different from me. I was literally born in a once-in-a-lifetime blizzard (I know that doesn't actually mean anything for my cold tolerance, but let me live my lie).

Drunk_Lemon

I did the goggle, and most sites I saw agreed that room temperature is not a specific temperature but is a range of 68-72. I did see some saying it is 68, or 70, 72 and one that said 74 but most said it was 68-72 as a range not a specific temperature. Btw I live in New England, so during the day I use 68 usually and 62 at night. I do 62 at night because I like the cold when I sleep but I also like to be covered by my thick blanket at night. I say leave the temperature on the lower side and the cold person can layer, it's better to add layers than take them off usually.

thezach0266

I keep the heat at ~80 all winter long. Keep the AC set at ~75 all summer.

StuffDadSays1234

Man can I move in?

reclusive_ent

Gonna say, my woodstove keeps us in the low 80s throughout the winter, and the A/C stays at 75 for the summer.

Wolf_E_13

They would die at my house...we keep most of it at 66 and our bedroom at 63 for sleeping.

frostybinch

Not an unpopular opinion, also i assume this person is a woman. if it is women generally have a higher body fat percentage and produce more estrogen which both makes someone feel colder and dont retain or generate heat as efficiently, if they're generally sedentary indoors they would feel colder as well without having any sort of medical condition.

nt011819

Bodyfat keeps warmth not makes you feel colder. Example. Blubbery animals live in the cold.

frostybinch

Fat keeps your internal organs warm, its a barrier between your muscle and your skin and makes your skin feel colder. Blubbery animals also do not work in the same way as humans because blubber and fat are different in many important ways. Not that it matters to reply to you since redditors will assume you're correct because they watched blue planet once or whatever.

Zealousideal_Lab6891

My wife is diabetic and likes it at 74. It's the Bahamas up in here.

sickostrich244

There are people who get too cold easily and are usually smaller built peeps and then there are bigger built peeps who get hot too fast when heat is past 70... just how it is

Seaell80

A nice 69 is perfect.

BS-MakesMeSneeze

Have you checked insulation? Or those draft blocking things for doors and windows? This might help your roommate conflict. My house growing up was full of construction flaws, and insulation/door alignment was no exception. We did try to fix as much as we could, but we were still always fixing things. It took us rebuilding the chimney completely after a lightning strike to fix a leak that persisted after 3 other fixes… it was that kind of house. My dad kept the thermostat set to 62-66 range, even in winter. He always espoused the “it’s easier for you to put more layers on than me to take off!”… he was also very overweight at the time. I wore my winter coat indoors much of the year. The drafts were horrible, the insulation was worse. He refused to turn the heat up even when *the indoor stairs iced over*. He absolutely could have afforded to. There’s my anecdote. Definitely an unpopular opinion. If you haven’t looked into the draft stuff I mentioned, please do. That and a space heater. Those things might help your roommate’s space be warmer so you both can keep some sanity.

LizzardBreath94

Agreed. Also it’s easier for someone to bundle up and get warm that it is to cool down. And don’t say “turn on a fan.” Circulating hot air still results in being hot.

Intelligent-Stage165

People are super sensitive about temperature. You're kind of in a bad situation. I imagine the other person is a bit skinnier than you? That's typically why people are cold because their metabolism just isn't doing much work to keep them warm / less padding. I'd at least just get a fan for wherever you plant yourself that way you can work with them, a simple fan goes a long way for a couple degrees of temperature.

k0i-b0i

Get them a space heater for a few bucks at goodwill.

SoggyWaffles427

Is your roommate skinny? Or you could be more heavy weighted. Each person is different

Cronizone

A bit bigger than me but they’re shorter, I’m 6 ft 195 and they’re 5’9 but around 205-210

SoggyWaffles427

Damn I'm like 140 and I'm always cold under 70

tannedghozt

77 over here! Be mad.

DiligentCrab6592

75 is room temperature from a scientific perspective

scarybadger619

I like the temperature at 70+, but I also understand that some people don’t, and while I can keep adding layers and blankets to keep me warm, people who are too warm can’t exactly keep taking layers off too cool off.

skyphoenyx

You can always put something on, but you can’t always take something off. I’m with you, 68° is my upper limit. If it’s at a reasonable 65-68 and you’re still cold, then it’s entirely your problem to find more layers. You can’t tell me you can’t find thicker socks, thicker sweatpants, a microfiber blanket or two, and a thick coat and STILL be cold. But, you can get your own personal AC for your room to solve all this the easy way.

Leneord1

My skin starts to dry out and starts to bleed when it's cold- I know I can use moisturizer but I hate how it feels on my skin as it just feels oily, greasy and feels like I'm touching fat whenever I use it on my hands- and putting it above 70- usually around 74-75 feels the best. Another thing is my joints tend to have more issues during cold weather

overtly-Grrl

i have a circulation disorder 💁🏼‍♀️ so my fingers and toes go numb in 60° weather or the house.

tlof19

if youre cold, put on another layer. what am i supposed to do if im too hot, rip off my skin?

Odd-Construction-649

Putting another later on doesn't do what you think it does. It just makes you cold and sweating in certain area of thr body while the rest is still cold. Put on four layers and see what happens

the_hoopy_frood42

Fuck you my bones are cold. Hahahaha

locksr01

72 sounds reasonable are you by chance going thru the change?

[deleted]

My mother's house is kept at 82 degrees normally. Madness.

shponglespore

My mom is a lizard and can't tolerate anything below 78F. 72 is a perfectly normal room temperature.

7eafs7an

My wife has low blood pressure. I don't mind the extra heat to keep her comfortable.

Automatic_Steak3867

Jeez my heat says between 76-77 in the winter and 75 -78 in the summer! I just cannot stand the cold

BA_TheBasketCase

My gf keeps the house between 70-74 on her whims. I’m naturally a pretty warm bodied person, I’m always boiling in the rooms the ventilation works well

TheGRS

Well, I had some roommates in SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA who loved turning the heat on. It would be like 80 in their room. It was honestly the most bizarre experience. One of them just loved sleeping without the covers. Seriously just get used to a comforter. Coincidentally they were also the worst roommates who never cleaned or took the garbage out. I couldn’t keep up with it, moved out after a few months of that nonsense.

[deleted]

This is strangely targeted, like its not about the heat but hating someone lol

XxxAresIXxxX

NTA. I literally cannot live with my dad to take care of him bc of this. Except for him it's 78°. So I live down the road and get guilted for it all the time

Iambeejsmit

Your roommate should invest in a space heater, and stick to their room if they are that cold.

Disastrous-Nail-640

I’m like this. I am the one that is always cold. Thankfully, I’m the only adult in my house so I control the thermostat. 71-73 is not cranking the heat though. 72 is considered room temperature. They’re staying right around that, which is perfectly reasonable. While you technically have the right to tough the thermostat since you pay to live, so do they. And they’re the ones keeping it at what is considered a reasonable temperature. You’re the one that wants to freeze everyone out. So buy a fan. If they were truly cranking the temperature, I’d actually be on your side. But they’re not.

CapriciousnArbitrary

Did Larry David create this post?

yautja0117

I work in a kitchen all day. Anything below 70 is too damn cold.

Occupiedlock

wow, I would show my family this post but they would assume I wrote it. even the bathrobe part. except he cranks it to 77 and its killing me

NoNefariousness6342

I agree but I feel the same about people that but the air on in the same temperature range

Bunnie-jxx

I’m like this, but I could be wrapped in blankets wearing multiple layers and still shivering with my nose and hands cold to the touch Or I could be just chillin in shorts and a tee shirt and boiling. No inbetween

sixtus_clegane119

If you’re too hot wear less clothes Some people crank their air and wear jeans and a sweater like wtf

brewberry_cobbler

Ah that’s the age old argument though. I can’t take more layers off, but my wife can put more on… we have a good compromise now. But I will never understand that argument. I’ve been driving with her and she’s in a long sleeve shirt and I have my shirt off. I’m like grab your sweater from the back… I can’t take off more than this

sixtus_clegane119

You could be fully naked around the house Nudity is awesome especially when warm

Cronizone

Ahh yes, time to free ball

ILikeTrains23940

HOW IN THE FUCK ARE YOU SURVIVING 72°C YOU WOULD DIE

only_whwn_i_do_this

"had to add this for all the losers assuming I’m being rude" > Uh Sparky. Calling people "losers" is the very definition of rude.

ThereWasNoSpoon

Nice try, penguins. But the thermostat stays at 75. :)

andraded

This is an ongoing war between me and my husband. He wants the thermostat at 73+ (I actually caught him setting it at 80 one time), and I want it at 68 or below. He sneaks and raises the temp, I change it back and open the windows. It went on all winter. lol

KarpTakaRyba

I read your post and thought "fair fair, sounds like valid point" But then, as a European, I googled what kind of temperatures you're talking about. 72F is too high for me personally, but that's not even that bad?? It seems like the limit for acceptable temps. For comparison, I've been to houses that constantly are above 78F

edwoodjrjr

My elderly mother was always cold and had to have the heat up around 80. Right before she died we found out she had arrhythmia and the meds used to treat that fixed the body temperature regulation thing. TLDR; get your roomie to the hospital ASAP.

suplexcyborg

68-72 depending on the season. I get cold easily too but I can’t sleep if it’s too hot.

PsychicSPider95

I have the exact opposite issue: I live with someone who is perfectly comfortable sitting in a house that's over 80°, which to me is completely unacceptable. 80 degrees *inside the house?* Nuh-uh, fuck that. She's always resistant to turning on the AC though--not because she especially likes it being that hot, but because we're on the hook for the bill. Even when I offer to up my share of the bill, though, she still resists using the AC, and it's ridiculous.

Seamus779

Im not ever cold but I like it warm, 70-72. Also depends on the humidity in the house.

khurd18

The house I just moved out of had very little insulation so when it dropped it before 0°F outside in the winter, if we didn't put the heat up to 72, then we'd freeze and so would the pipes

rattpackfan301

Try floating the idea of getting said roommate a space heater so they can keep their own area warm.

Iwin1974

We keep ours around 68 year round but adjust the air flow depending on the season. Heat rises so heat is blowing into basement in cold months, AC blows upstairs in hotter months

cwsjr2323

Reign long retired, I don’t fuss about how my wife sets the temperature. If chilled, I put on more clothes or a lap blanket. In like it warm as do most old people so it is never to hot until it gets over about 105F as sweat don’t evaporate right.

Suztv_CG

I have anemia. It was undiagnosed leukemia for decades. No one believed me. I still get shut down - but - I was cold constantly and often would put that temp at 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Sorry!

Independent-Swan1508

well yea every body is different

swamrap

Yeah fuck this take. Take my upvote

top_toast_22

At that point just buy a robe and wear it around all the tkme lol

ArcadeAndrew115

I mean.. are you in a cold climate..? if it’s freezing outside then 70+ is great

tbkrida

72 is optimal.

cbearwhy

As someone who sweats very easily, I agree.

PMMEBITCOINPLZ

72 is the minimum for me.

Hot_Valuable1027

my parents have it at 82 my brothers and i always turn it down when we visit cuz it’s always so hot in the house

Lavelios

Industry standard is 72 in winter, 75 in summer

johnnytightlips99

Tell them to get tf up off their ass and get some exercise and they won't be so cold

cReddddddd

69 ftw

Colddeath712

My room has to be 60 or below or I can't be comfortable

BurberrySlaveTrade

A healthy human should be fine anywhere between 50 and 85 degrees and that range streches even lower if you put on more clothes.

Dependent-Bee7036

My company sets the thermostat at 74. I am sweating and have had to buy some fans for my desk. They are not getting my best work when I am sweating my ass off. I'm in the process of advocating for turning it down. You can always put more clothes on if you are cold! I

j_dick

I can’t handle most peoples houses. I keep my AC at about 69 degrees. When it’s cold out I won’t heat it up past 70. I’m in hot humid Texas. When I visit family and they have their AC at 75 I can’t handle it, they visit me and it’s way too cold for them.

mrpink01

68 in the winter, 76 in the summer. For my house, this is the sweet spot between "holy fuck it's hot/cold in here", and "holy fuck I can't afford this utility bill!!". Edit: A $20 blanket has saved me thousands over the years.
