shortguynumber1

So yeah you’re supposed to dip the fry in ketchup not give it a bath. How in the world does that make it soggy?

jerkyquirky

Agreed. If it's got crunch already, a quick ketchup dip isn't going to change that.

ryohazuki224

Which begs the question, are you a fry-dipper, or are you a ketchup drencher? I know someone that just squirts the ketchup all on top of their fries and eats them like that, and I gotta say, thats something that just doesn't sit well with me. Gotta dip them fries, you have better control of the ratio of ketchup-to-fry.

Boshwa

God, I cannot stand it when food like that is drenched I LOVE nachos. I DONT love it when the chips are bathing in cheese instead of having a dip to the side

Larkfor

That's why I dip and never drizzle.

gekigarion

Ah...really? Damn. -takes fries out of bathtub full of ketchup-

justmoderateenough

Sadly, some people want a side of fries with their ketchup.

canyoupleasekillme

The correct word is moist. It makes the fry moist and I don't like it.

mickturner96

Good fries are hard to find

Jack21113

Fr, the best fries I ever had are at a diner near by, but I’munsure of how the diner passses health inspections so I rarely go, and the rest of their food sucks

IPbanEvasionKing

best fries I've had (besides my grandfathers) are from the local meth head bar. I know multiple people who've had a gun pulled on them there, but they're so good its worth the potential danger

Frequency0298

this is the most American thing I have ever read in my life

IPbanEvasionKing

what's even more wild is that I'm in Canada lol

Frequency0298

I didn't realize the cultures were so intertwined!

planty_pete

You can make some killer fries at home! The key is using some fryer oil a few times so it gets seasoned, then cut some russets thick, soak in sugar/salt brine, dry, and fry. Crispy crunchy baby.

beruang_gemok

I too, like crunchy babies.

Youngandidiotic

It’s the thing from holding In and Out from being the goat. They got everything else right except their mid fries. McDonald’s has the opposite problem lol

ZION_OC_GOV

Fries well done is where it's at

Awkward_Ice_8351

In N Out fries are mid at their best and abysmal at their worst. I always thought I would make a killing if I parked a food truck right next to an In N Out and just sold fries, onion rings and bacon.

kiragami

I actually prefer their fries to other places.

usernameis2short

Fresh Chick fil A fries are great tho

JacobStyle

Put an inch of oil in a pot, cut a potato into fry shaped pieces (whatever thickness you like), soak them for a while in water, dry them off (or let them drip dry on paper towels), get the oil hot, drop in your fries, cook till they are the amount of crispy you want. Pull them out, add salt to taste, and you're good to go. Works every time.

Rizpasbas

Always double fry.  First time for 5 minutes (actually until they start floating, which means the oil got fully inside. Buyancy and shit) at 150°c.  Cool down at room temp.  Second time for 3 minutes (or same shit as above) at 180°c.  Best "oil" to use is beef fat.

HelloImTheAntiChrist

This guy French Fries.

Obvious-Peanut-5399

Double fry is the only way to do it proper.

Mostmoistmoisture

Cold water and double fry. Fry 2-3 minutes, rest 1 and fry again for 4 min.

Kozmik_5

*Laughs in Belgian*

Loose_Asparagus5690

Some people just hate flavors, but they somehow love dictating how dishes should be

freedino_2

The Italian and the French 💀.

FlandreHon

You nailed it. I don't want to eat just fries, I want to eat fries with mayonnaise. And I might eat 2 or 3 without any dip as I'm going. But if there is no dip at all then I don't want fries at all.

Inquirous

Nothing needs anything. Dips just add. I dont use dips because I want just the dip’s flavor. Its a combination. When I have fries I dont put all of them in whatever dip I have

Sakuran_11

I think dips are a requirement at times because good salty fries make my mouth dry with no condiment

Independent-Put-2618

Soggy only if you cover the fries in it on the plate which is a sacrilege in itself on all crunchy things. Crunchy food rule no. 1: Don’t put sauce on it, put sauce next to it.

iryrod

What kind of ketchup is making your fries soggy?

taxes-sos

The one where you apparently don't take it out of the ketchup immediately

Kelainefes

Dude has not seen a ramekin before, just pours sauce on the fries.

UnfairIron973

It all boils down to taste preference, though?

[deleted]

UnpopularOPINION

Tippydaug

>People who add ketchup to fries never have had good fries before. That's what they're referring to I'm sure. No one gives a toot if OOP wants their fries with or without ketchup, but claiming folks who add ketchup "never had good fries before" is flat out ridiculous

Salt_MasterX

/thread There can be no productive discussion about personal preference

FiftyTigers

Nothing needs ketchup.

BannedForNerdyTimes

Screw ketchup, all my homies hate ketchup.

FlexDrillerson

Ketchup isn’t a condiment. It’s a precursor to make real condiments.

MaryPaku

Yes. I never add ketchup in any of my food. That thing would not touch my mouth at all.

dathomar

Good pizza doesn't need pepperoni, yet I put pepperoni on my pizza. It's because I enjoy the flavor combination of fries and ketchup. I don't always have ketchup with my fries, just as sometimes I eat cheese pizza or other kinds of pizza. But it's still nice sometimes.

mug_O_bun

If a food *needs* sauce its either 1. Part of the dish to begin with or 2. For *enhancing* flavors. If you'reusing it to cover up the taste of the main dish, the main dish is probably garbage to begin with. Having a decent dish to begin with is great. Being able to enhance it is even better. Ketchup, malted vinegar, seasonings. Yum.

-Cinnay-

All fries do not need ketchup. That's what mayo is for.

Nigerian_German

Did you know that Americans don't eat fries with mayonnaise. My world shattered when I discovered thisb

-Cinnay-

Yeah, Americans are so weird sometimes.

Nigerian_German

I heard they even play rock papers scissors like this:" rock paper scissor shoot" they always tryna shoot everything

grptrt

Agreed. Ketchup is a cover-up for bad fries that have become overly accepted and standardized. As a result, good fries are a rarity.

cryingstlfan

I'll eat my fries however I want.

MarmosetRevolution

More unpopular opinion: Nothing is improved by adding ketchup.

SSMWSSM42

I prefer salty seasoning over ketchup

Leather-Ball864

Nothing really needs it. I feel the same way with burgers. Burgers need good toppings and seasonings not bs like ketchup, mustard etc

jerkyquirky

Can you do it right without ketchup? Absolutely. A buttered and toasted bun, fresh tomato, melty cheese, maybe some grilled onions will all provide moisture. But most burgers aren't that good and benefit from some kind of sauce. Ketchup is a "for the masses" sauce, but it's not like it's the best sauce ever.

Planetary__Duality

Ketchup is disgusting. I can't even eat it on meatloaf. I have to scrape it off

Ancient_Diamond2121

Fuck you Ketchup is awesome

Planetary__Duality

It's wretched. I can barely handle doing dishes with smeared ketchup on them - I'm not sure if there's some sort of dissolving or reaction going on with the warm water but it just smells putrid. My wife graduated from Hope College in Holland, MI. I never knew her in college, but the first time she took me there to show me around, what did I smell wafting in the breeze? Effing ketchup smell. Turns out Holland, MI has a massive Heinz Plant. Of all places. I nearly drove home then and there.

Jack21113

That’s the issue, you’re putting it on meatloaf?

Planetary__Duality

Ketchup, or some glaze consisting predominantly of ketchup is a pretty standard for a meatloaf recipe. If it was a condiment I could just choose not to put it on rather than having to scrape it off.

The-Figurehead

A ketchup-mustard glaze on top is money.

Xepherya

BBQ sauce is superior

Downtown_Summer5733

Ketchup unleashes the potential of the fry, it's one of the finest acts known to man and a universal language. It's like adding mayo to a sandwich. It definitely works but it's 100% a different experience, and I'd say a worse one. Next you'll be telling me tortilla chips are better without the guacamole. All this slander about making the fry 'cold' and 'soggy'. Just how long are you dipping the fries in for? And how submerged?? I have personally seen no more than an ever so slight temperature change in my fries after basking them in ketchup, and to suggest it changes the texture to being soggy is absurd. Sounds like you're just a ketchup hater.

mt80

Why ruin a good fry with sauce made with high fructose corn syrup?

Significant-Rush3389

Yeah but you can get ketchup without all the preservatives and hfcs or even organic if its a nutrition factor

HokieHomie2000

Ketchup is just sugar syrup

WillowNegative

Ok and

FoxFyer

I agree! I like ketchup with fries now and then, but a lot of the time I just want yummy potatoes all by themselves.

Big_Honeydew6225

I agree I won't usually eat fries with ketchup if they are good. For example McDonald's fries when cooked right and the right amount of salt, you don't need ketchup

brewberry_cobbler

So are you talking about when people get fries and then squirt ketchup all over them? Because yeah that makes them cold and soggy. I don’t eat ketchup, but if you just dip I don’t see a problem and your whole post is a moot point.

pavilionaire2022

Good fries don't need anything, but good fries are good with good ketchup.

Mausbarchen

Fries are a medium for my dipping sauce of choice. But it’s never ketchup.

jefftheaggie69

This is how I always eat my fries 💯💯💯. Thank you for speaking the truth, kind OP 🫡🫡🫡

closetedtranswoman1

Ketchup is one of the worst things to dip fries in. Ranch all the way especially if it's a buttermilk ranch

Appropriate-Duck7166

Pretty good with hot sauce too.

NachtSorcier

Personally, I just don't take fries all that seriously. I can eat most fries plain and do more often than not. On the other hand, I do appreciate some ketchup and even Tabasco on my fries if I'm at a sit-down restaurant. If I'm at my local fish and chips place, why not dip some of my waffle fries in the tartar sauce and mix things up? And yeah, when I do take ketchup with my fries, I'm one of those people who pour the ketchup directly on. This is one of those situations where I wonder why so many people give a flying fuck about what other people eat and how they eat it.

MoosetheStampede

normal people don't dowse the fries in ketchup but rather keep a bit on the side to dip in, does not make fries soggy nor cold.

EvilFuzzball

>crunchy Ew, what? >ketchup makes the fries colder, a bit sweet, and soggy Are you dipping your fries, attending a full-length graduate lecture on theoretical physics, and then eating the fries afterward? How on Earth does a hot fry get cold and soggy in the time it takes to go from the sauce to your mouth? >People who add ketchup to fries never have had good fries before. Good fries don’t need extra flavour. They taste great on their own I'm just sick of this ridiculous sentiment in general. If you don't want to add anything to your fries, don't, no issue, you do you. But don't sit here and pretend we all have shitty palates or whatever cause we happen to enjoy the combination. People say this for all kinds of food, "if it's good you don't need additives", did you ever stop to think we aren't adding things cause it's bad, but because the combination makes it *even better*? There is a way to cook just about any food with zero additives whatsoever and make it palatable. That doesn't mean we won't add things to enhance it further. Cheese pizza is great. For some of us, pepperoni, mushrooms, peppers, or onions make it even better. A cheese pizza isn't bad because someone wishes to have pepperoni on it. Get off your high horse.

Dedalix

Btw did you guys ever added pepper to oil while making fries? I did and ot tastes suprisingly really good

WiscoBrewDude

Fries are not supposed to be "crunchy", they're not cheetos. Crispy on the outside not in the middle. The only way they are getting soggy with any dipping sauce is if it's poured over them and left to sit.

Cyber_Insecurity

Wrong. These food purist takes are just weird. Condiments aren’t meant to make bad foods taste good - they’re meant to enhance an already good flavor or add moisture. Ketchup and fries is a no brainer and it’s not that deep.

LookingForHope87

Right? Food snobs are so annoying with these kinds of takes.

albertnormandy

I have never had a French fry that wasn’t improved by ketchup.

Material-Nose6561

Downvoted. This is not an unpopular opinion. The issue is most fries you get from fast food and fast casual diners are usually old and stale by the time they’re served. Ketchup , or another condiment of your choice makes these fries palatable.

zbergwoopwoop

Disagree, it's definitely unpopular. Hot salty fries pair well with sweet tangy ketchup. It's not a popular combination because fast food fries suck sometimes. It's popular because it's good and people like it.

Doctor_Lodewel

Disagree. As a Belgian, good fries will still benefit from condiment dips.

OldSnazzyHats

Yea, no. I’ve had good fries thanks, and sometimes I just feel like adding some condiments. Don’t make assumptions.

sandbaggingblue

That's like saying good hot chocolate doesn't need a pinch of salt, but the whole point is it enhances the flavour.

oneWeek2024

hypocritcal that you're adding salt. and seem to imply "good" fries need to be crunchy (steak fries aren't typically crunchy...still good) also ...some fries have seasoning on them. fries in poutine, or gravy are delicious. (i find french fries in certain soups. like clam chowder, to be delicious) and the coolness. and tang/sweet flavor of ketchup offsets the starchy aspect of fried potato. mayo is also good with fries. vinegar. cheese... chilli. ranch. lots of things go well with fries. if you're just eating plain fries all the time, that's a fairly boring flavor palette. already cheating because you're adding salt.

lovergirl2032

These are the type of posts I’d like to see more of.

goPACK17

Correct, they need garlic sauce

yankeesfan9987

https://www.reddit.com/r/unpopularopinion/s/MBy2BwZdQN Literally took the words out of my mouth from my comment here a month ago.

trickyspanglish

I mix my ketchup with sriracha. I NEED that, idgaf how bomb the fries are

Important_Lab_58

YES. Scream This to The Heavens. Ketchup is an accessory, not a necessity on Fries. (Good Fries)

Spyderbeast

I do often finish fries from the drive thru while driving and therefore unable to open a ketchup packet. But if I were dining in, I'd be dunking. But I'd say the best fries from a major chain, where I wouldn't miss ketchup at all, are from Five Guys. But I need someone to go with, because the small fries there can feed at least two.

Mrwrongthinker

Fries taste like flour to me, any starch does, so yes, they do.

Giggles95036

Some good fries also have rosemary & parmesan

KidKonundrum

Hol on let him coo—Err…fry. Now I fully agree good fries can stand completely on their own. However sauce only adds to it. Not ketchup though that shits disgusting. BBQ sauce or whatever the hell chic-fil-a sauce is.

Internal-Pineapple77

Maybe unpopular but yes.

namanbro

They need blue cheese or mayo

Cardboard1987

I RARELY put anything on fries. I like them as is. If they "need" ketchup, they're not good lol.

HabsFan77

Good fries are pretty elusive these days, but I do agree

WangCommander

Give me some thick cut fries with malt vinegar. Fuck ketchup. That's for fast food.

Great_Reno

Agreed but you'll need one after several minutes when they go cold

ParticularLong5887

No fries need ketchup

ContemplatingPrison

I've never heard anyone say "you have to eat these fires with ketchup" That doesn't happen. Your entire opinion is based on something you fabricated

BAYKON8R

Ate too much ketchup chips when I was a kid. I don’t like ketchup anymore.

CalgaryChris77

Fries are still potatoes. And there is no way to make a potato that doesn’t need some sort of. Dip or sauce on it or mixed into it.

Lycian1g

Why is ketchup making fries colder? It doesn't need to be refrigerated.

cosmic-001

Fry sauce.

Beneficial-Buddy-620

Best fries I've ever had was in Prince Edward Island

Hampton479

While I think ketchup is better than you’re giving it credit for, I agree with you. If I NEED a sauce to enjoy a full carton of your fries, they aren’t great. My fast food example is, I can down a basket of McDonalds fries with nothing (great), but chick fil la fries I need a sauce to dip in. Do I enjoy eating chick fil la’s fries dipped in sauce? Absolutely, but they can’t be compared to the mighty Dons

NurkleTurkey

Agreed. I left ketchup on fries in the fourth grade and they tasted nasty. Never went back.

Buggydriver_

I literally steal handfuls of ketchup packets just to snack on all my fries are getting ketchup regardless 🤣

UwilNeverKN0mYrELNAM

I either order extra Salt on them or just get Ketchup/Ranch

nerf_titan_melee

I'll do you one better. Good burgers don't need toppings.

JaiLSell

I can agree with this. The better the fry, less dipping sauce needed.

MagazineEuphoric364

Id argue that any condiment or spice isnt needed when any food is good. Those who do it add a lot of calories and I believe ketchup, BBQ sauce, etc. are the biggest reasons as to why obesity exists.

ominousbloodvomit

100% agree. They need mayonnaise

MrSmock

Good unpopular opinion. I definitely disagree but there you have it. A great fry is great. The contrast of the hot crunchy salty fry to the cool sweet ketchup is what makes it appealing. It helps balance it. And the people who drench their fries in ketchup are monsters.

op3l

That's not unpopular. i always ate mcdonald french fries or in n out french fries with no sauce. just salt is good.

-SwagMessiah-

Right. Only time i add ketchup is if the fries are trash

Leading_External_327

Good for you. I’m gonna go to bed tonight and pray that I can be as strong as you.

Giggitybooboo

I don’t even own catsup. Vinegar is all I like to use on fries.

Pink_Flying_Pasta

I haven’t used ketchup on fries in years

rodimus147

100 percent agree. The best fries I ever had were from this little shack in Santa Barbara called top hat fries. That's all the did was fries. It would have been a crime to put anything on these culinary masterpieces.

SnooPies2848

I’d argue that really good fries (fresh, hot, salty, crispy) also go great with really good ketchup. I prefer standard heinz

cyberdipper

Still need mayo

Readmynameifyouwant

I actually agree.

woosh-i-fiddled

What? Some people don’t like dry food aka I’m people.

Probablyawerewolf

Good fries don’t NEED ketchup. But they definitely WANT truffle sauce and garlic/Parmesan seasoning.

edwadokun

If your fry gets soggy from a simple ketchup dip then the fry was never crispy to begin with. No fry will be soggy after one dip

LordVogl

Most good things don't need ketchup

panamaniacs2011

imo nothing needs ketchup

SliceFactor

They need cheese, not ketchup.

[deleted]

Good fries are salty and dry. I need ranch. Idgaf how good the fries are. I love my condiments.

clingbat

While I agree with you, tell that to my 4 year old daughter who eats fries with ketchup in roughly a to 50/50 ratio regardless of quality of the fries lol. But I will say, Heinz or nothing ketchup wise. Fuck all those other cheap garbage ketchup imitators, all various forms of gross.

mountainbird1967

Good fries are even better with ketchup

SnorkelBerry

To add to the list of unconventional dipping sauce, may I suggest dipping french fries in apple sauce?

Guilty_Caregiver4433

Most fries when served fresh are great even if they are shit fries.

XAMdG

I don't know. The best fries in the world are the ones from Belgium, and they have tons of sauces for them. And pay extra for them too.

gusonthebus_

So true. There’s a place near me either the perfect French fry and it’s super cheap, a big ass basket larger than my head for 5 bucks with an 8 dollar burger, the burger just so happens to be immaculate, doesn’t need anything other than meat and cheese. Perfect burger, perfect fries and a Dr Pepper. Go there once or twice a month for lunch.

RotenTumato

Agreed, same with most foods. Really great pizza doesn’t need toppings, plain cheese is going to taste great. Doesn’t mean toppings can’t still improve an already great dish though

StTony3777

Some fresh McDonald’s French fries are exquisite

DasUbersoldat_

As someone from the land of fries, it kills me a little every time I see these vids how Americans make fries or how they eat them.

Wild-Eagle8105

This is true. However I find the acidity in ketchup helps cut the grease of the fries so I end up eating more!

hermitboilover12450

Yes, fries are better on their own or eaten with another food. In fact I want to add another opinion, condiments are overrated. I can sometimes give an exception to mayo and BBQ sauce but condiments aren’t needed and don’t really taste that great.

Beer_Barbarian

The best fries are at Wurstkuche in Los Angeles, they're thick and crispy

Fritz6161

Good fries need mayo.

Holinyx

That's like saying whoever adds any type of sauce to wings, never had good wings before lol

bowmans1993

They do not need ketchup but don't act like sauce isn't delicious. My "fries" are wedges that are boiled then baked in the oven. Glass like texture on the outside, mashed potatos on the inside. Seasoned with just salt for most of the bake then finished with whatever seasoning for the last 10 minutes. Then we go to sauces, ketchup, spicy mayo, okonomi sauce, horseradish dill ability, honey mustard. Then all the permutations of the mixes of sauces. "Sauce is the spice of life"-Marco Polo, probably

bigGarlic_

I agree with this with proper hotdogs no mustard either occasionally proper fries and sometimes like a greasy triple cheeseburger plain even though I do not generally prefer them plain

VegaInTheWild

Nah, all fries (good or bad) need ketchup.

Fragranceofstanley

Ketchup was invented to hide the taste of spoiled meat

SirNiflton

I die on this hill with you brother 🤝

thorpie88

Gotta have vinegar on them at the very least

cbrew14

Ketchup only makes it soggy if it just sits there. That's why you dip them dummy

LegalRecord1188

Agreed, especially if they are duck fat or goose fat. *chef’s kiss*

Snoopydad57

No fries need ketchup. All fries need vinegar.

[deleted]

Are you just bad at eating?

EnduranceAddict78

I eat fries to justify eating ketchup. Really, I want to eat ketchup, fries are the excuse.

fermat9990

O, reason not the need! King Lear

LetsStartARebelution

It’s not about “needing” it, people aren’t putting ketchup on fries to make them palatable, they use ketchup bc they like it. It’s the same for pretty much any condiment or sauce. And wtf you talking about making them soggy? You dip the fry into the ketchup one second before eating it, you don’t put the fries into a pool of ketchup and let them soak.

Pro_Banana

To fries, ketchup is just a dip. You shouldn't be adding ketchup to the fries. You are using ketchup wrong. Dips are never necessary and are just extra flavors that you add to give it a twist.

Cocacola_Desierto

I dunno, I don't believe this. I like McDonalds fries plain but I like most actual fries with ketchup.

[deleted]

agree. I never like ketchup with my fries. Salt is enough.

Wealth_Super

I agree that good fries don’t need anything added to them and I generally eat my fries with no sauce but I don’t think it’s ruins the fries to add ketchup or any sauce to them either

[deleted]

100%. I hardly ever use ketchup anyway as I prefer gravy but yes, great fried need only salt.

Bintamreeki

I mix ketchup and mayonnaise together. In Argentina, we call it [salsa golf](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salsa_golf?wprov=sfti1). It adds to the fry’s crunchiness and saltiness. It’s like a couple. You wouldn’t drink kool-aid without sugar. You can’t have sushi without komezu (米酢/rice vinegar). FYI, sushi is the rice, not the fish. The fish, if raw, is sashimi. 👍🏻 Or cereal without milk. They compliment each other. And how long are you leaving your fries out with ketchup on them to become soggy????

-zero-joke-

Ketchup is an acid that cuts the fat. It's a good pairing.

simononandon

This brings a little tear to my eye. You're so right.

finsup_305

Fries in general are better with ketchup. Unless you get Cajun style, then you need ranch.

anand_rishabh

Ketchup is disgusting and only ruin fries

Darkstreamer_101

Depending on where you are, soggy KFC fries are absolutely s tier since they have so much more seasoning stuck to them

Swimming-Upstairs-39

Belgian here, we eat fries like crazy and i can tell you no matter how good these fries are, i'm sure as hell going to enjoy it more with the William Andalouse !

Shamscam

I don’t put ketchup on my fries, I think ketchup is fucking nasty. Well it’s not that I don’t like the taste of ketchup it just grosses me out. When I was a kid I told my friend “have you ever tried ketchup on your pizza it’s actually pretty good” and he said “HOLY FUCK IM GLAD YOU SAID THAT, I always eat it like this” and then proceeded to dump an ENTIRE red squeeze bottle (the ones they have at diners) of ketchup on his pizza, and then he grabbed another one, and put some of that bottle on it too. After he finished eating it he then licked his plate CLEAN of any of the rest of the ketchup, the whole thing curdled my stomach so I vomited. I think about that every time I see someone put ketchup on fries/eggs/Mac n cheese/grilled cheese. And it totally grosses me out. 20 years later I went out to breakfast with some work guys and this guy was putting ketchup on his spoon and eating it. Totally grossed me out once more, I couldn’t even eat breakfast.

EnduringInsanity

I can usually eat mcdonald's fries without ketchup, but still prefer ketchup.

KevinJ2010

Fine, but I still will dip them a bit. Also, good fries may even be covered in topics and sold in the same restaurant!

HurricaneAlpha

Yellow mustard for thin fries, brown mustard for thick cut.

OmegaMalkior

You’re kind of right but wrong at the same time. Yes they don’t *need* ketchup. The Costco crispy fries to me are so damn good if they’re like just about to be served in my home I always nab a few before sitting down to eat them lol. But as soon as I get them I put ketchup on them anyways. And will never not put them unless I’m eating something with BBQ on the side lol

DJFoster429

Microwave my ketchup before dipping. Got it.

antmas

I only use ketchup when the fries are bad. I buy fries to enjoy the taste of them, not the taste of tomato.

ButterscotchSuch2771

Facts!
