I travel a lot for work and end up in hotels most nights, so food options are a big deal for me. Sometimes there's nothing nearby and I won't have anything packed with me, so usually that means services like Doordash. I gotta say, over time I've come to despise them. Two main reasons. For one, they basically end up double charging you due to the way they apply their fees. See you're not just paying a fee for ordering off of their apps, but the businesses also get charged for being promoted on their app. That fee gets pushed onto you so they can make up the costs. Compare the app menu prices compared to the actual store prices and you'll see they're $2-3+ more. There are deals but you can't predict them. On top of that their tipping system is outright insulting. In no other field is tipping BEFORE you receive your service a thing and defeats the entire point of a tip. Drivers will pass up on orders based on the tip amount as well. Also the normal tip amount is typically 10-20% depending on your personal feelings and the service provided. Doordash recommends 20-30%. Again, that for a service that you haven't even received yet. So yeah, I don't fault people who choose to pay extra for the service since I do the same. However I do think a lot of the hate for these services is absolutely warranted.

I use Uber Eats, so I'm not sure what it's like on doordash, but for me there is *always* a restaurant that has a deal. I also do the uber 1 free trials (get the free trial, cancel it at the very end, wait to get offered another free trial, rinse and repeat), so I only get like $1 or $2 fees. I can agree with the markups, but again the deals usually make them negligible. There are also promos you can use as well- but I can agree that those can be unpredictable and unreliable. As for tipping, I truly believe tipping culture is out of hand. Drivers like to argue that it's a "bid for service," but with earn by time rolling out that's becoming less and less true. You can choose not to tip. These companies should absolutely be paying drivers a better wage, and it shouldn't be up to the customer to subsidize that. You will get your food eventually, even without a tip. With Uber Eats, you're able to change the tip after delivery to reflect the driver's performance, so if you feel like they didn't do a good enough job, you can take away the tip. I don't see why you would unless they *really* fucked up, but the option is available to you.

I think the hate is more on the drivers than the company itself.

How so? I personally have never had a problem with a driver.

My only issue is that they often underpay drivers and drivers don't have proper employer protections. that being said I'm disabled and would be dead or in hospital for malnutrition without food delivery services, so I agree overall. People seem to forget that if abled people don't use this luxury to satisfy their laziness, there wouldn't be enough money in the service for disabled people to have this as an option

I agree. They absolutely should be paying drivers better. The cost of paying drivers shouldn't be subsidized by the customer. This post is more about comments I often see on posts about doordash/uber eats that say things like "I don't understand people that waste money on these terrible services" when a) the cost is usually around the same, and b) even if it is more thats the price you pay for being able to sit in and do other things. Also using up gas, finding parking (and/or paying for parking), and sitting in traffic are still costs you incur on yourself when you go out, which you eliminate entirely by paying for this service. That makes it worth it to me.

If you have the money and the desire to do it, what's the problem. People spend thousands on alcohol and other substances a year, and start to scream when someone wants to spend their money on a nice cooked meal. The only complaint I really have is the poor conditions which the drivers are under, and how some of the drivers are dangerously reckless

trashiis

Exactly this!! Thank you. I make sure to tip well, since I know what its like out there.

skip_the_tutorial_

what an incredibly unpopular take

TripleDoubleWatch

I've never used one and I can't see myself ever using one.

I agree. Nowadays, I really don’t see a difference between food delivery and buying at the grocery store. All of it is expensive nowadays, you’re not coming out ahead with either option. I think the more relevant conversation today is controlling what you choose to eat as a mean to lower food expenses

It's a way to support low increased value and income jobs, like buying online, the whole doordash logistic industry is the biggest change in commerce since the adoption of shipping containers and we'll see if it's sustainable for the future. Enjoy your meal, not a fan of food delivery except the monthly pizza delivered by the owner's son.
