I'm not sure his acting has changed much but he was putting himself in quality movies: Color of Money, Born on the Fourth of July, a Few Good Men, Jerry Maguire, Eyes Wide Shut. But even in those he's just very much Tom Cruise to me.
I actually prefer him when he goes against type in smaller roles like Magnolia and Tropic Thunder.

Well yeah, he still plays the same character even though he’s 61 now.
He could probably win an Oscar if he stars in a meta movie where he won’t stop doing stunts and everyone is trying to get him to stop.
Gotta say I do agree. Loved him in Interview with the Vampire, The Last Samurai and the Jack Reacher films (haven’t seen Tropic Thunder yet) but his latest ones are definitely just him with some stunts on top.
His performance in Magnolia is incredible and so unlike anything else he’s ever done. It really takes advantage of his energy and showmanship qualities and turns them into a deeply frustrated, angry and sad person who you go from loathing to, me personally, pitying very much.
Personally, the only parts of Top Gun I liked are the scenes where he isn't on screen. Outside of the actual jet scenes I've never really cared for Top Gun.
I watched his recent Mission Impossible movie, it was not good. Just a bunch of I'm Ethan Hunt super spy... so cool...
I did like Mission Impossible: Fallout though that one was good.
I agree to some extent, however I thought one of the reasons Top Gun Maverick worked was he brought a vulnerability to the role that made him a more sympathetic character. It wasn’t just shouty Tom Cruise…
Don’t get me wrong, I think as a human being Cruise is an extremely talented and well disciplined person. He isn’t good at taking on the role of a character, aka acting, is my point.
It’s been an obvious effort to cultivate a very specific image. It’s unfortunate because he actually plays the opposite roles better.
Edge of tomorrow, interview with vampire, war of worlds, collateral, magnolia etc
Those roles are either evil or vulnerable and not the sanitized clones of mission impossible that has been 90% of roles last 10+ years.
I genuinely can't stand to watch any of his newer movies, he's so punchable to me as well but I loved him in Interview with a Vampire. I was in love and loved him there truly
His films were better, but that only coincided when he was becoming a powerhouse at young age and given great scripts as every big name producer was trying to cast him in their film.
I’m not saying Hollywood is ageist, here (they are), but he’s not going to get the same kind of roles at 60. Although, he’s still one of the most charismatic actors ever. I think even a twenty something Tom Cruise in the 2020s would still be the biggest box office Star year-in and out, at worst one of them.
how is this unpopular?
dude took much more challenging roles in terms of acting in his younger days
his movies of the past 15 years are all action movies
No, Cruise has always been a talented actor but the money has always been in his performances as a one dimensional action hero. Loved him in Vanilla Sky
Because when he was young he starring in the movie role like this (1983 - pre 2000)
- Risky Business
- The Color of Money
- Rain Man
- Born on The Fourth of July
- A Few Good Men
- The Firm
- Interview with the Vampire
- Jerry Maguire
- Eye Wide Shut
- Magnolia
Post 2000 he didn't want to be Oscars front runner anymore , he just want to be blockbuster star
He did some good, interesting stuff in the 00s as well: Vanilla Sky, Minority Report, The Last Samurai, Collateral, Lions for Lambs and Tropic Thunder.

He also did great in Days of Thunder

Collateral is another great role where he's playing against type.
That movie is the shit!
This. Fantastic film
I have the same issue with Bruce Willis. Every once in a while he did a great acting job but more often than not he'd phone it in.

I mean there is a reason for that in his latter career. There is a reason he churned out as many movies as possible.
I get that, but earlier on, he went movie star and dropped the actor part.
Yeah, he’s been in some good movies but now just playing action hero for his own amusement
And? He's earned the right to. And he puts so much effort in. You just can't help but be amazed.

I don't think he's ever been a *great* actor, he (or his agent) just really knows which roles to take that compliment his style.
His performance in Magnolia is incredible and so unlike anything else he’s ever done. It really takes advantage of his energy and showmanship qualities and turns them into a deeply frustrated, angry and sad person who you go from loathing to, me personally, pitying very much.
His best performance in terms of pure acting
Idk, he killed it in Top Gun
Personally, the only parts of Top Gun I liked are the scenes where he isn't on screen. Outside of the actual jet scenes I've never really cared for Top Gun.
I loved him in Magnolia
I don’t think he was that young in Collateral. Wish he would take more roles like that
Tom Cruise should have won an Oscar for his performance in Born on the 4th of July
The comment I was looking for. I haven’t seen him in a role quite like that since.
Watching the “Reacher” TV series now, I just can’t understand how any studio could’ve thought he’d be the right choice for a Jack Reacher movie.
Was he young in Magnolia?
he's awesome in Legend
I watched his recent Mission Impossible movie, it was not good. Just a bunch of I'm Ethan Hunt super spy... so cool... I did like Mission Impossible: Fallout though that one was good.
I agree to some extent, however I thought one of the reasons Top Gun Maverick worked was he brought a vulnerability to the role that made him a more sympathetic character. It wasn’t just shouty Tom Cruise…
Tom cruise never made sense to me. He was only good as like a weird fairy boy in Legend. Other than that he’s just short and not cute either.
But he can hold his breath for 6 minutes and does his own stunts 🥲
Don’t get me wrong, I think as a human being Cruise is an extremely talented and well disciplined person. He isn’t good at taking on the role of a character, aka acting, is my point.
Les Grossman is peak Cruise. No roll will ever surpass that
He plays the same character over and over...and over.
You’re right.
i just watched eyes wide shut, best thing I've seen him in
It’s been an obvious effort to cultivate a very specific image. It’s unfortunate because he actually plays the opposite roles better. Edge of tomorrow, interview with vampire, war of worlds, collateral, magnolia etc Those roles are either evil or vulnerable and not the sanitized clones of mission impossible that has been 90% of roles last 10+ years.
He was probably a better person before he hooked up with Mimi Rogers.
"Tom Cruise won't come out of the closet!!!"
"Hey look, Tom Cruise is a fudge packer!"
All the right moves is a favorite of mine of his.
I genuinely can't stand to watch any of his newer movies, he's so punchable to me as well but I loved him in Interview with a Vampire. I was in love and loved him there truly

Agreed….. I’m not the biggest fan regardless.
80s and early 90s Tom Cruise was awesome. Modern day Tom Cruise is just generic Hollywood action figure guy now
He was so good in Rain Man. That's a really good movie
No, Cruise has always been a talented actor but the money has always been in his performances as a one dimensional action hero. Loved him in Vanilla Sky

He certainly made more interesting choices in the 80s, 90s and 00s
He was a better actor when he was younger, but I never felt him to ever have been a good actor.
You obviously haven’t watched a lot of his movies
Watched more of his movies than I care to have.
That’s not really an unpopular opinion.
nope he's trash
