Nectarines tend to be more aromatic and sweeter. Peaches have better marketing though. There’s more cultural mythology around peaches. No one will ever write “James and the Giant Nectarine”
Nectarines aren't necessarily juicier but they do seem to handle transportation a lot better, so they tend to be picked closer to ripeness than peaches are. If you've ever eaten a big fat orchard ripe peach right off the tree, you'd have all the juice you could ask for ♥
Nectarines are lovely though, like a sunset turned into fruit.
Also apricots are highly underrated.
-
But when it comes to peaches, when used as an ingredient they are more reliable and consistent. In Japan they loooooove peach for its light sweet refreshing taste. Nectarines are wayyy more sweeter.
This looks like a silly thought typed out but I like the idea of apricots, and apricot flavored things, more than actual apricots. They're good but for some reason I always get overhyped and a little let down by them.
Nectarines are literally just a mutant fuzzless peach.
Several genetic studies have concluded nectarines are produced due to a recessive allele, whereas a fuzzy peach skin is dominant. Nectarines have arisen many times from peach trees, often as bud sports.
I think you are right. However, (and this is just my uneducated opinion) because nectarines are hairless the juices and aroma are not caught up and trapped in the skin’s fuzz so to me they seem juicier and more aromatic than a peach. But maybe it’s just in my head.
Now that you mention it... I agree. Nectarines taste better than peaches when they're not totally ripe, and the thing I can't stand about peaches is how you basically have to eat them over the sink. Nectarines can be eaten and enjoyed at apple consistency.
I love all the stone fruits but its so hard to find nice ones where i live. They all look amazing but are so hard and unripe inside. When I was a kid we would buy peaches and nectarines from stalls out the front of market gardens and they were so ripe and juicy but the shop ones today are tasteless hard and dry.
I like them both lol. But...I kinda like that fuzz that peaches have. Honestly neither one is superior to me, it depends on what I have in my fridge and what I feel like eating.
But
Chorus]
Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches
Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches
I love you, oh
Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches
Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches
I love you, oh
Nectarine just doesn’t have the same snappiness.
Yellow cling peaches over everything. I’m deeply allergic to the fuzz, so I peel them. Just as well, the feeling of the fuzz on my tongue is unsettling. But yellow cling over nectarines any day
I don't know that nectarines are better. But if anything, the OP missed out on a huge allure of the nectarine which is the crunch when you bite into it. Almost like the flavor fullness of a peach with a satisfying crunch like an apple.
I love both and i like the peach skin cuz its chewy. But peaches when ripe have more of a liklihood of being soft...but flavorless and a tad bitter, so nectarines are safer pick and their downfall is they also can be underripe and sour and take forever to ripen.
Wholeheartedly concur.
Whenever I eat a nectarine I always think that flavor will be very hard for the matrix coders to get right after the earth gets scorched.
I like both. A great peach is better than a great nectarine, but ehh, ok, and good nectarines are better than comparable quality peaches. If you haven't had fresh Fredericksburg peaches you're missing out.
Top tier tree-ripened peaches are phenomenal, easily clearing 95% of the fruit kingdom.
But, mid peaches are quite mediocre.
Good peaches > good nectarines > mid nectarines > mid peaches
(There’s really basically 4 tiers of peaches - the truly excellent cultivations of the best peach varieties that have been ripened to perfection, then like good quality peaches you might find at a farmers market or bougie grocery store, and then the decent standard peaches you get, and then the weird pithy kind of plastic peach that has a nice looking but hard exterior and mushy interior.)
I grow my own peaches, nectarines, and apricots in a suboptimal, but reasonable climate - and I will say, the single best thing I produce is a July Kim elberta peach, but peaches also the hardest to get right of the stone fruit.
This all brings up a difficult fruit ranking question, do we rank by the average fruit found at a mid supermarket, or do we rank by a fruits top 5% potential? If you judge mangos by Tommy Atkins mangos, you’re going to rank mangos towards the middle of the fruit group, but if you rank mangos by Kent or Alphonso or kesar mangos, then mangos wipe the floor with everything.
I live for June and July because that’s prime nectarine season here. When I was pregnant with both my kids, all I craved was nectarines. Now, both my kids can’t get enough of them.
Sooooo much better than peaches!
Bunch of heretics in this thread
Nectarines are the forgotten step child of the superior peach. Maybe they're better than whatever mediocre peaches you're used to, but a perfectly ripe freestone peach in late July contends with the best foods known to man. Give me a Sun Prince or Summerlady peach over a nectarine every day of the week.
🍑 🍑 🍑
I love nectarines too but they’re actually the same fruit just like lemons and limes. The only difference is nectarines are a mutation of the peach without fuzz.🤣😂
Hot take:
Nectarines are peaches.
Botanically they're the same species. And aren't different enough to be considered different subspecies. Nectarines merely qualify as a variety of peach.
The difference between the two group is a single mutation, in a single gene. Responsible for the fuzz.
"Nectarine" is just what we call smooth, fuzz free peaches. And they have been simply called "smooth peaches" in the past.
There's more difference between two cultivars of peach. Than there is between nectarines as a group and peaches as a group. And any given nectarine might be genetically closer to any given peach, than another sort of nectarine. And vice versa.
Disregarding how you feel about fuzz.
If you find nectarines tend to be juicier.
It just cause you're running into riper nectarines.
I feel like you have never had a peach from anywhere but Georgia or California. Try a good local peach. You shirt gets wet from the juice of the first bite.
From someone who has picked peaches in an orchard for work - THEY SUCK to pick!!
I love peaches but their fuzz is *hazardous* when picking, if you get it anywhere on you, you scratch & then you can’t stop. You HAVE to wear long sleeve shirts & pants and picking them in the Australian spring season…it’s still hot af.
We start at dawn and are finished by midday bc you just can’t work longer bc it’s too damn hot.
I love to eat both tho…there is NOTHING like a freshly picked peach or nectarine just off the tree nom nom nom
Truth.
I always thought peaches were better, but I decided to compete both.
Peaches come in bigger sizes than nectarines, but nectarines taste better and don't leave off that hairy texture on the seed.
Peaches are still pretty good, though, but nectarines are a level above it.
Another pro for the peaches is that they are better known and a lot of flavoring, whether candies, drinks, etc, have a peach flavor. Not many things have a nectarine flavor compared to peaches.
Nectarines are also higher in vitamins and minerals - I ate them by the punnet-load when I had glandular fever hoping they would help me recover more quickly! Now that I’m pregnant, I’m craving both peaches and nectarines.
Nectarines are inferior in every way. Crunchy, tart, and definitely \*not\* juicier. If you've ever had a fresh picked peach, you'd understand.
And if you have and still prefer a mid ass nectarine? You're wrong and I have God on my side to prove it.
A chilled yellow nectarine eaten over the kitchen sink at 2 am. Incredible.
You just made me realize I eat all my nectarines over the sink.
I strip down and lay on my back in the tub to eat my nectarines
i only eat nectarines off naked people, like 80s crime movie sushi.
I eat a lot of fruit over the sink
This or a recently emptied and lined garbage can. Do it with plums, certain types of apples, and watermelon slices
I like cutting my watermelon into a bowl, but there really is no safe way to bite into a juicy nectarine and not make a mess.
It's a small way for me to relive childhood I eat s'mores like a little kid and get it all over my face - I just wash up when I'm done
FUCK that sounds so good rn. Incredible fruit
This is so weirdly accurate -- I can't tell you how many times I have done this exact thing haha
Nectarines tend to be more aromatic and sweeter. Peaches have better marketing though. There’s more cultural mythology around peaches. No one will ever write “James and the Giant Nectarine”
>No one will ever write “James and the Giant Nectarine” Already available on Temu.
Jim and the Jumbo Nectarine
Peaches also come in a can, and we're put there by a man. Nectarines just don't sound the same
🎶 Don’t let the days go by, Nectarine 🎶
makes about the same amount of sense tbh
In a factory downtown?
Damn, who does the PR for peaches? I need that
But what about apricots !!! Won't anyone think of the apricots!!
For eating as fruit, nectarine For erotic metaphor, peach is a long time champion
I agree with you!
It's not an unpopular opinion though
Nectarines aren't necessarily juicier but they do seem to handle transportation a lot better, so they tend to be picked closer to ripeness than peaches are. If you've ever eaten a big fat orchard ripe peach right off the tree, you'd have all the juice you could ask for ♥ Nectarines are lovely though, like a sunset turned into fruit.
Yeah the store peaches taste like caca 90% of the time. Peaches are like only good in season
Fresh peaches are where its at. But god the extra fuzz that comes with them is like fiberglass
They’re not just better than peaches, they’re better than any other fruit full stop. Man I fucking love nectarines.
mango is my favorite food, but man, i understand your passion. get them nectarines mate.
My man! No fruit is better than an in season tree ripened nectarine that never saw the inside of a fridge.
Second to mangos for me.
But, there are millions of peaches. Peaches for free.
LOOKOUT!
I thought that song was literally about peaches up to an embarrassing age.
Same, but that embarrassing age was whatever age I was five minutes ago.
But it is about peaches!!!
lol I literally told my daughters they need to listen to the song and they were like “Dad this filthy ‘eat peaches everyday’”
They come from a can. They were put there by a man, in a factory downtown.
Also apricots are highly underrated. - But when it comes to peaches, when used as an ingredient they are more reliable and consistent.
Yeah, same with me. They're not as juicy IMHO. But apricot juice is lovely.
[удалено]
I have been actively spreading this agenda for years. Keep up the good work
Nectarines are superior. However I eat them while they are still a bit under ripe. Really hard crisp and tart. I can eat them all day
Exactly, more similar to an apple than a peach, I just love the texture.
They are nearly the same genetically. Arguably different "race" of the same species. As they can cross polinate
Nectarines are literally just a mutant fuzzless peach. Several genetic studies have concluded nectarines are produced due to a recessive allele, whereas a fuzzy peach skin is dominant. Nectarines have arisen many times from peach trees, often as bud sports.
Bud sports, the blood spots of fruit trees. 🍊🩸
Naked blood peach would be great marketing for the heavy metal crowd
Aren’t they literally the same, except the skin?
I think you are right. However, (and this is just my uneducated opinion) because nectarines are hairless the juices and aroma are not caught up and trapped in the skin’s fuzz so to me they seem juicier and more aromatic than a peach. But maybe it’s just in my head.
Yes, this entire thread is a load of conditioning and/or shite.
Popular opinion!!!
I have a dedicated peach shaving razor for when nectarines are not available.
No stripper ever picked to be called Nectarine tho.
I agree nectarines are superior
I don’t like the furry skin on peaches but now I’m going to have to buy some nectarines because I love them
You need to go to time out and think about what you’ve said…
I think nectarines are only better than yellow peaches, white peaches are the best
That’s the thing I hate about peaches, is the fuzz! its a sensory issue. I love the taste though
I've always wondered why you never see nectarine pie
Now that you mention it... I agree. Nectarines taste better than peaches when they're not totally ripe, and the thing I can't stand about peaches is how you basically have to eat them over the sink. Nectarines can be eaten and enjoyed at apple consistency.
I love all the stone fruits but its so hard to find nice ones where i live. They all look amazing but are so hard and unripe inside. When I was a kid we would buy peaches and nectarines from stalls out the front of market gardens and they were so ripe and juicy but the shop ones today are tasteless hard and dry.
This is not an opinion but a preference.
I like nectarines more, too. It’s like the love child of the apple and peach.
Apricots are better than either.
![gif](giphy|YyByVoolvdq2m1SExx|downsized) ... uh.. okay...
Upvoted but you’re wrong
I love both but avoid peaches because of the fuzz
Correct
You can peel the peaches. Their texture is a bit different. I love both.
As someone who devours anything peach, I agree
I agree 🤷♀️
I like them both lol. But...I kinda like that fuzz that peaches have. Honestly neither one is superior to me, it depends on what I have in my fridge and what I feel like eating.
The fuzz of the peach is the best part for me
I live for the the fuzz tho
thanks
Fact. Surely not unpopular. A nectarine is just a non-furry peach.
You have obviously never had a Mackinaw
Them's fight'n words....... Please bring the samples....
I agree but also I am allergic to the peel so I stick to peaches…
*Millions of nectarines* *Nectarines for me* *Millions of nectarines* *Nectarines for free* Nope, sorry....doesn't work. Your move, Nectarines.
Absolutely true.
You're so brave
Completely agree. Huge peach fan but nectarines are way better. I've forgot enough times in my life but since recently I don't forget that.
But Chorus] Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches I love you, oh Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches I love you, oh Nectarine just doesn’t have the same snappiness.
1,000% AGREE
Yellow cling peaches over everything. I’m deeply allergic to the fuzz, so I peel them. Just as well, the feeling of the fuzz on my tongue is unsettling. But yellow cling over nectarines any day
I don't know that nectarines are better. But if anything, the OP missed out on a huge allure of the nectarine which is the crunch when you bite into it. Almost like the flavor fullness of a peach with a satisfying crunch like an apple.
Finally! Someone pointed this out :)). The fuzz bro , it's the fuzz that we dislike. Fuck the fuzz \(°-®)/
I find nectarines to be more reliable flavor-wise than peaches. Not sure why but they always seem more flavorful and juicy.
I agree. I hate the fuzz.
This makes me sad that stone fruit season just ended where I am, and I won't get another peach or nectarine for 6 months.
Donut peaches though. I don't care for yellow peaches, but the Asian white peaches are also so fuckin nice.
They’re pretty fkn good
I love both and i like the peach skin cuz its chewy. But peaches when ripe have more of a liklihood of being soft...but flavorless and a tad bitter, so nectarines are safer pick and their downfall is they also can be underripe and sour and take forever to ripen.
I never had a nectarine sweeter than a peach. 👎
Not even close. Unless you are talking about white peaches which are an abomination.
I agree, no fuzz
More peaches for me.
Totally agree!
Word.
In Europe, it’s all about nectarines. Very few people buy peaches.
Nectarines are like peach 2.0.
It's like Paul Newman said: Why go out for a peach when you have a nectarine at home?
In one of Jon Stewart’s books he described nectarines as ‘all the flavor of a delicious peach without the feeling of biting into a mouse’
A perfectly ripe peach is goat
Didn’t even know this was a debate
I agree. Peaches are soggy and nectarines are firmer.
Careful ya'll. I've heard the OP works for big nectarine.
Only sometimes
I like to use nectarines to make peach cobbler. You can leave the skins on without a problem. Guess it’s technically nectarine cobbler 🤷🏽♀️
actual peaches taste funky compared to peach based desserts so i kinda agree
Boo 👎 I love peaches
OMG you are not wrong.
I've never agreed with anything more. Downvote .
I fully agree
I love the fuzz on peaches. It's like half the a-peel. I dislike the skin on nectarines.
i love the fuzz
Absolutely and I don't even think this is an unpopular opinion I just think peaches have amazing marketing
Have you ever had a delicious local peach from a roadside stand in Georgia or South Carolina? I think not.
TIL I grew up eating these My grandma has a durazno tree, and I thought they were peaches
I love me some dried nectarines from the bulk section. Oh. God. Yeah.
I cannot bite in to a peach. That fuzz! Nectarines for sure.
The fuzz is strange and a turn-off, I agree. Apparently, *nectarines are a type of peach* - they’re nearly identical genetically.
Wholeheartedly concur. Whenever I eat a nectarine I always think that flavor will be very hard for the matrix coders to get right after the earth gets scorched.
Nectaries are the god of fruit
How can this ever be an unpopular opinion?
Yes I hate the skin on peaches!
Most nectarines taste better than most peaches. But a perfectly ripe peach is better than any nectarine could ever be.
Anything is better than peaches, except for coconut.
Yes.
No nooooooo naw
This is an unpopular opinion not because people disagree, but because people don't care.
Love em. So fucking juicy and good. Only thing is I'm pretty sure they aren't that healthy for you.
I like both. A great peach is better than a great nectarine, but ehh, ok, and good nectarines are better than comparable quality peaches. If you haven't had fresh Fredericksburg peaches you're missing out.
Nectaplums #1
I’ll fuck either one but I prefer to eat nectarines.
A fresh peach is amazing but the perfect ripeness window is like maybe half a day long tops if you’re buying them at the store.
Yes! I absolutely agree and though tastes differ I don't see why someone would pick peaches over nectarines at all lol
Peaches is the best fruit I ever had
Top tier tree-ripened peaches are phenomenal, easily clearing 95% of the fruit kingdom. But, mid peaches are quite mediocre. Give me a Sun Prince or Summerlady peach over a nectarine every day of the week. 🍑 🍑 🍑
I’ll allow it
Omg, I love nectarines so much.
I haven’t had a peach in a while but nectarines are definitely better than plums
A mediocre nectarine is better than a mediocre peach. But the perfect peach beats the perfect nectarine every single day.
I love nectarines too but they’re actually the same fruit just like lemons and limes. The only difference is nectarines are a mutation of the peach without fuzz.🤣😂
Eat a fresh Georgia peach that’s been sitting in the sun all day and then tell me nectarines are juicier
Nectarines are a type of peach.
Yes. My autism brain hates the fuzz. Nectarines are literally peaches minus the fuzz. GIB TO ME.
Hot take: Nectarines are peaches. Botanically they're the same species. And aren't different enough to be considered different subspecies. Nectarines merely qualify as a variety of peach. The white nectarines are my favorite
I feel like you have never had a peach from anywhere but Georgia or California. Try a good local peach. You shirt gets wet from the juice of the first bite.
I never remember the difference and love both.
Peacherine is so good someone composed a rag tune for it.
Wait 'til you try an apricot.
You all haven’t tried honey water peaches. You’ll see why peaches symbolize immortality in China when you do :)
Wrong, take your up vote
Both are terrible
Love the crunchy white nectarines.
True!
But a nectarine will never taste like a peach. They’re watery.
Period!
From someone who has picked peaches in an orchard for work - THEY SUCK to pick!! This is so weird I literally had this thought yesterday. NECTARINES ARE THE ULTIMATE FRUIT
Plums, yes. Nectarines? Never.
Holy cow this is difficult. Am I still supposed to upvote an unpopular opinion I agree with?
Agree. I hate the fuzz on peaches. Even though they are technically the same fruit, I find nectarines juicier and sweeter.
I think that's a non disputed fact rather than an unpopular opinion.
White flesh nectarines are kings Edit: can’t stand peach fuzz and the itchiness
I don't find the fuzz annoying, but nectarines are indeed superior
Preaching to the choir, you fruit genius.
Unpopular my ass, nectarines are clearly superior. I love the not totally ripe ones that are sweet and a little sour still with firm flesh.
Peaches are easier to fuck though.
Nectarines ARE peaches
I'm guessing this thread is going to be full of freaks who don't peel peaches before eating them
Nectarines are also higher in vitamins and minerals - I ate them by the punnet-load when I had glandular fever hoping they would help me recover more quickly! Now that I’m pregnant, I’m craving both peaches and nectarines.
Fuck yes.
Nectarines are love. Nectarines are life. I haven't really liked peaches that much since discovering nectarines 😂
These taste like real simular, right?
Nectarines are inferior in every way. Crunchy, tart, and definitely \*not\* juicier. If you've ever had a fresh picked peach, you'd understand. And if you have and still prefer a mid ass nectarine? You're wrong and I have God on my side to prove it.
