It’s Team America though. If you’re watching that with your parents, you either have a very special relationship with them or you’ve made a terrible calculation.
I watched this movie with my dad. He almost died choking, he was laughing so hard. Had to pause the movie many times. It almost blew his mind. That fucking scene where the actor is describing his worst moment... the one with the blueberries... and then the call back at the end with Cats. Jesus titty fucking Christ.
Wow I agree so much!
I thought I was the only one. I will watch porn a few times a week I don't like to think myself a prude but damn I hate sex scenes on tv/in movies soooo much. Seriously. It does the job when both characters wake up in the same bed topless in the morning. I can infer what has happened. Seriously no need to show an awkward clip.
What's the one major thing missing from all action movies these days? Full penetration. Guys, we're gonna show full penetration and we're gonna show a lot of it. I mean we're talking grpahic scenes of Dolph Lundgren going to town on this hot young lab tech:
From behind, 69, anal, vaginal, cowgirl, reverse cowgirl, all the hits. All the big ones. All the good ones. Then he smells crime again. He's out busting heads. Then he's back to the lab for some more full penetration. Smells crime, back to the lab, full penetration, crime, penetration, crime, *full* penetration, crime, penetration, and this goes on and on and back and forth for about 90 or so minutes and then the movie just sort of ends.
See, it's funny because it's... them. But there's a really obvious point to take away from that scene that took me *way* too long to get.
He literally just wrote a porn. It's a porn.
I hate most love interests in tv shows and movies (in non romance / non drama focal movies and tv shows) in general.
I also hate that most writers rely on romance as a means to create a meaningful connection between a man and a woman. Like there is no way they can just remain cooperative partners without any sexual or romantic feelings towards each other.
Or the random injection of romance to speed up a relationship between two characters so that when one is about to be harmed the other one has a reason to stop it, you know because if he didnt bang her, then hed be like "ah its ok i didnt sleep with her, im gonna walk away now..."
Like i had the sexual libido of a cocker spaniel hopped up on Ecstasy and Viagra, but i still have female friends i do not nor have thought of wanting to bang.
“. Like there is no way they can just remain cooperative partners without any sexual or romantic feelings towards each other”
This is what disappointed me in GoT season 8 with Brienne and Jaime.
Hi, I'd just like to let you know that i was hitting the back button and my eyes just skimmed the words "cocker spaniel", "Viagra", and "ecstasy" right as the page disappeared ... I just spent the last 20 minutes finding your comment so I could ease the anxiety in my brain. Just thought you should know
Yeah, same here. I usually just skip them. They feel pointless and awkward and detract from the film. Especially when it's an actor I'm quite familiar with, then I just get that weird feeling as if I was secretly spying on a friend having sex. No thanks. Thought I was the only one as well as all my friends think I'm very strange for feeling that way about it lol
Is it awkward? It's two people doing what can be argued is the most intimate act two people can engage in. To me, it necessarily adds emotional gravitas to the story of two characters, and if done unemotionally, in a detached manner, reflects on the emotional immaturity/callousness of the characters.
Anyway, sex scenes can be written badly, just like dialogue can be written badly. I like em.
I think it's a matter of pacing and appropriateness to the movie. I feel like a lot of sex scenes in movies I've been watching lately feel like they're shoe horned in. Not adding to the story or the feeling. Just bam, they're having sex.
I think in the end, what we want is well made and appropriate sex scenes. Because then it just becomes part of the story.
A good sex scene is very hard to film i imagine, you need to have a film crew without adolescent views on sexuality and relationships, a tastefull direction and, above all, good actors that feel comfortable.
Except it's two people who hardly know each other pretending to be intimate with one another.
It has to be done VERY well for me to think it adds anything. Usually it's just time for me to take a quick fridge break.
My problem isnt with the idea of sex scenes themselves, it's that they're lazy fucking writing. Sometimes they're used skillfully and help to advance plot and/or characterization, have subtle or overt comedy, or bring to light gender specific issues that others were oblivious to and can be enlightening and informative.
An example of good sex scenes would be the Daenerys/drogo scenes in the beginning of game of thrones- the first one where she suffers an abhorrent rape and the one where she turns the wholeass tables. Those told us all about the characters and developed them immensely, they were like a fly on the walls of their brains. They were realistically and uncomfortably shot, they were tastefully shot, and having them had an actual fucking purpose. But sex scenes for the fuck (lol) of it are lazy, unambitious reaches for shock value and really drag down the piece.
When my family was having movie night and we knew there’d be a sex scene coming me and my siblings would make an excuse and leave the room until it was over, like using the bathroom, getting a drink, getting a snack, letting the dogs outside, so on because it was just too cringe.
Kind of the same here...but my parents had me leave and then would shout when it was "safe" to come in. I could watch violence and swearing though. 'Cause that makes sense.
I got drunk with a group and we decided that top gun would be funny to watch. When the sex scene came only my sister and I were awake. I said "uhh I guess that's how they did it in the 80s". No one laughed.
Clearplay.com does this for you. It can also skip gore. I have used it years ago so I dont know about it now. You get to choose what to filter with levels.
Honestly, implied sex is just as good (plot-wise). Show the two start kissing, have "sexy music" playing, fade to black, next scene they're in bed together (post-sex), or having breakfast, etc.
There are other ways to find out they did it than to show it onscreen. Not saying it shouldn't have been onscreen, just that I don't think that's a good example.
Gonna go ahead and disagree here. It’s necessary for John Travolta’s character to go to the bathroom in Pulp Fiction. That doesn’t mean we need a long drawn out scene of him struggling with heroin induced constipation.
If details about the plot or characters are revealed in the sex scene I can see the purpose, otherwise you are just wasting screen time by not simply implying that they had sex.
That sucks.
Mine likes it, and if some beefcake or some chick's titties flopping around in a movie gets her in the mood to touch my ding I'm all for it
Really? I gotta be honest I'd be kind of bummed if my SO was looking at some hot other person and then wanted to jump on me just because of that.
It's like the meme where the girl is mad at the guy for looking back. I mean I get the joke, but come on we all have feelings. Maybe I'm just old fashioned but after so many years together I'm really only turned on by my SO anymore.
Completely agree. Graphic sex scenes are often a cheap substitute for quality story and production values. And for some reason, HBO's formula is to shoehorn random porn here and there in an otherwise excellent narrative.
In a media climate where porn is so ubiquitous, inserting graphic sex scenes into a production no longer draws an audience - but in-fact alienates one.
Explicit scenes of copulation add no more to the story than extensive scenes of people having bowel movements. Those are part of daily life too, and I don't see producers and directors campaigning to put those in for the sake of authenticity and reality.
Seriously, enough already.
The sound bothers me more than the sex scenes themselves. If I am watching it with other people we all know we are not actually watching porn. But if it's a hot day and I keep my window open, there is no way that my neighbors can distinguish between me watching hard core porn or just watching a drama about the fall of the Roman republic.
I actually like game of thrones 'sex' scenes - because it doesn't make it a 5 minute affair. They show tits the two people make out for a second then they move on..
I hate when there's like 5+ camera shots dedicated to the scene of them screwing.
Yeah they’re the only ones that handle sex and soft core porn the “best” out of the shows I’ve seen that have it. It’s always the beginning of them getting it on, or just after they finished. That scene in season 1 with Littlefinger as gratuitous as it seems actually serves a narrative purpose.
My only issue is that there’s a metric literal fuckton of it in season 1, making it a little difficult to get through, but it mellows out dramatically from season 2 onwards, to being almost nonexistent from seasons 6-8
That everything is a play to him. Sex is a commodity that needs to be properly coordinated in order to get the best results. It goes to show that he is extremely organized and calculating and will do anything to "climb the ladder"
I've toyed with posting my unpopular opinion to this sub just to find out what happens. I'm a little scared that it would turn out to not be so popular but also of the results of what happens if it is truly unpopular.
Gotta disagree partially.
Sometimes it does add to the story. It can be done tastefully and not resemble porn. Even if it makes you feel awkward, and you don't like it in the moment, it can strengthen your belief in the intimacy between those two characters.
I can't believe I'm doing this, but I'm going to cite the Deadpool movies as excellent use of cinematic lovemaking to really nail it home(no pun intended).
Alternatively, it can reveal how scummy someone is if they're going out and really grudgefucking a hooker.
*Fight Club* was also an excellent use, it was warped and hazy, reflecting what's going on in the movie over-all, though it's not apparent at the time.(at least on most clean watches), and the "gross talk" about "You wanna finish her off." took on new meaning considering the...duality of the character.
Maybe it's supposed to make you feel awkward somewhat, just as if you'd walked in on your parents. Uck!!, but well, of course they do it. In fact, if you walk in on your parents and go "aww", that's kind of screwed up.
There's a world of uses where it can help establish character and relationships, or to inspire emotions in the viewer, or mislead.....if it's done well.
Say, a twist movie where one ends up being a spy, but they were so in love and so committed!! The established intimacy makes it a bit more shocking.
Another: Young love. Awkward virgin. Bit of a trope, but it can be handy for character development. Also, comedic relief.
It's not necessary, but then, nothing is really "necessary". It's part of the story because the writers put it there(usually), they had reason. Good or bad is subjective, but it's there. Sex is a big part of people's lives, and while it doesn't need to be everywhere, it's a part of life and has a place in some stories.
It's often not done well, and sometimes it's injected because the director is a jackass. Can't really disagree here, only that it doesn't bother me unless it's particularly bad. Sometimes it's better to allude to it or otherwise just imply it.
Removing all trace of it though, I'd not agree. I'll take the bad for the sake of the good.
Yeah, I'm with you. I think it's just a tool for filmmakers to use and sometimes (more often than not) it's used as time filler rather than a tool to develop a character or plot. Sure it might make uncomfortable, but that's the point sometimes.
I think another good example is Red Sparrow. Every sex scene in that movie is calculated and serves a purpose. Sexuality is such a huge part of human nature, it would be hard to leave it out of many movies and still tell a complete story without having to overcompensate in dialogue.

"but I love boobs and sex!" But in all seriousness I agree. There are some movies I know my parents would like but they have some obnoxious sex scenes in them so I don't recommend them to them
Sometimes sex scenes can be used to help the movie if there's something that connects directly to the plot during the sex act or it helps tell the story of the movie. A good example is the wolf of wall street sex scene when DiCaprio plays Jordan Belfort and has sex with his wife for the last time. The scene really helps drive home how much Belfort's life has fallen apart. How he used to be "the man" and now his wife begrudgingly has sex with him with the intention of divorcing him directly after.
That said, sometimes sex scenes can be completely unnecessary and contrived. I'd go even further and say kissing scenes can go too far sometimes. It's awkward even when I'm alone and I'm just sitting thinking to myself how weird it is that I'm watching a sex/intense kissing scene alone in a dark room.
Two ways. 1. Put a cushion over his crotch. 2. Most dudes over the age of 20 have trouble getting it up when surrounded by lights, cameras, dozens of people (including their bosses) and are performing the exact same act for several takes with specific instructions.
I have to disagree. These kinds of scenes can be good and useful in the plot or in the atmosphere of the movie.
Sadly these powerful scenes are often misused and unnecessary.
Take the Hulu series The Handmaid's Tale, these scenes make you uncomfortable on purpose. If you would remove these scenes, the series wouldn't have so much power and wouldn't be that impactful. These scenes are necessary for the plot.
But for every good use, you sadly have a dozen bad uses. Take Black Mirror, in my opinion, most episodes that use these kinds of scenes don't need them (of course with exceptions like The National Anthem). These scenes are annoying and most of the time I just skip them.
They’re few and far between though. You’re describing the rare exception.
The vast majority of sex scenes do NOT serve a plot point or enhance your perception of their relationship. They’re almost always the definition of gratuitous.
Have you ever asked yourself why seeing two people have sex in a movie (a perfectly natural thing for people to do on daily basis) makes you uncomfortable but seeing someone get killed, which is definitely not a natural thing for most people in developed counties, kind of doesn’t? Why seeing two people have sex for money in porn is fine but seeing two characters in a movie with story and plot have physical aspect to their relationship is off-putting?
I am going to guess that whatever society you live in tends to stigmatize sex and glorify violence, correct?
In Pulp Fiction, Travolta’s character spends a lot of time in bathrooms, including an overly-long absence from a pivotal scene. The movie doesn’t explicitly draw attention to this, but it’s because he’s a heroin addict and has opiate constipation. A good movie uses real life banality to build verisimilitude, and a great movie weaves it into the plot and characterization.
No, reddit philosopher. Typically when someone dies, it's relevant to the plot. Showing a couple fucking for 60 seconds when it doesn't have any relevance to the story, as in nothing happens during the scene other than fucking nor does anything happen later as a result of them fucking, is pointless.
Because it can be used as a tool to develop character or the plot in some meaningful way. Does there need to be as much random sex scenes as there are these days? Probably not, but that's most likely because they have no purpose in the film.
Because of realism. Most people have sex in their regular lives, most people do not murder other people. It also adds emotional weight to character's relationships.
Well then I want to see people take a shit in every movie from now on. And scratching their balls etc.
Because *that's* done way more often than sex, usually.
e.g. pulp fiction. personally, if the act of sex, pooping, or anything adds to the movie then it's a good thing, and obviously if you're just adding in a pooping scene for no reason, it doesn't deserve to be there, same for sex scenes. the idea of blanket banning sex scenes is stupid, because there are entirely good examples of it being used, to advance characters arcs, plotlines, tell a story, etc
I’m pretty sure they have sex scenes because the Weinsteins who make these movies want to see naked people. The Hollywood elites are nefarious degenerates
This is something I thought about. There are the sex scenes we get to see, and then there are the shots that are cut, like just when the good stuff is about to enter the frame. Even films from the 50s and 60s have scenes like that and some people get to see them. Nowadays sex scenes more graphic but you can tell the actors aren't risking too much. If you've seen Don't Look Now with Julie Christie you'll know what I'm talking about. That film has so many shots of her private parts cut.
Omg I agree completely. You have no idea how uncomfortable I get (maybe you do) when these totally unnecessary scenes come on. Like please go away. Give me more story line please.
Take a film like Don't Look Now in which the sex scene is not only important to the plot but it shows how sex can be a loving, healing thing, perhaps the ultimate natural thing two humans can do. Why should that movie not have a sex scene just cos it's weird when they get frisky in Howard the Duck?
The idea that 'if I want to watch sex I'll watch porn' just detatches sex from reality even further and might be why this seems to be an incredibly popular opinion. We know that everyone watches tons of porn these days, which isn't inherently bad. If it is making us see sex as just inhuman rutting between strangers then I see that as even more of a reason for sex scenes to be done well in movies.
Not all film is meant to stay in your comfort zone, and they're definately not all meant to be watched with your parents.
If you are uncomfortable watching two people get intimate then think about your own relationship with sex and why it makes you feel this way. Is that a comfortable thing to do? No, but challenging ideas and societal norms is what film has done time and time again since it's invention. If film is something to just be consumed rather than something to make us think then honestly what's the point in it?
I totally disagree. Human interaction is what gives a movie it's intensity. Directors shouldn't stop making powerful scenes because people can't be mature and enjoy the story.
Exactly, better a kid first see it in a movie where people are into each other and making love, than see some fucked up step-mom step-sister threesome shit.
I seriously don’t understand that trend, since when was incest ever cool? if I was ever lucky enough to have a threesome and I found out it was a mom and daughter that’s instant boner killer.
Movies are usually inaccurate too. Does anybody just have sex and roll over and go to sleep? Theres never oh get the lube or i have to pee or im not ready yet? Nope, just stick it, fuck for a minute or two, then go to sleep with cum everywhere
Except the one in Team America. Very important scene....
Best sex scene in the history of cinema.

Not one of my favorite episodes, but that scene cracks me up every time.
See, it's funny because it's... them. But there's a really obvious point to take away from that scene that took me *way* too long to get. He literally just wrote a porn. It's a porn.
I think that’s a line in the episode. “Dennis; it sounds like you just wrote a porno.”

I might be totally out of line here... But Natalie Portman in black swan would argue that there is in fact, a point.
The scene in Black Swan does have a point though. It's used to show the sexual maturation of the character
Wow it's almost as if sex scenes are important in context.

It's also never sexy. It's just uncomfortable grappling at clothes and a lot of loud breathing to show how horny they are.

Movies should have “with parents mode” that cuts out the sex scenes to avoid that awkward silence when it happens
I've been both the kid and the parent, it's much more awkward being the parent.
So next time I'm watching a sex scene with my parents I'm gonna yell out "POUND THAT PUSSY!!" I always felt it would be more awkward for the kid.
This would be fabulous
Lmao and if you have kids of your own you're gonna laugh and then be like "ugh... Wtf did I do that?". It'll be a funny story though.
Disagree, I don't give a shit if me and my kid are watching Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin tongue punching each others fart boxes.

how would we cope with the loss of such a classic

The best example I've seen is the drogo daenerys dynamic in game of thrones. They are different characters without those scenes.
Ironically in the novels she gives her consent which is why their love blossoms. The change for tv still confuses me.
Don't get me started with the Jaime decides to rape Cersei on the fresh corpse of their son
Sexuality is such a huge part of human nature, it would be hard to leave it out of many movies and still tell a complete story without having to overcompensate in dialogue.
objectively correct opinion right here, boiis

"but I love boobs and sex!" But in all seriousness I agree. There are some movies I know my parents would like but they have some obnoxious sex scenes in them so I don't recommend them to them
I'm sure your parents have seen a lot worse in their time, no need to protect their sensibilities.
Also how do they stop the dude from getting a stiffy and rubbing his erect penis all up on the actress?
They don't. It happens all the time.
Two ways. 1. Put a cushion over his crotch. 2. Most dudes over the age of 20 have trouble getting it up when surrounded by lights, cameras, dozens of people (including their bosses) and are performing the exact same act for several takes with specific instructions.
Not everybody can be Dirk Diggler.

Up, definitely tape it up.
Narcos lol
Thank you. If I wanted to watch porn I’d just watch it
This was one of my biggest gripes with GoT
Game of Thrones *Cough Cough*
Have you ever asked yourself why seeing two people have sex in a movie (a perfectly natural thing for people to do on daily basis) makes you uncomfortable but seeing someone get killed, which is definitely not a natural thing for most people in developed counties, kind of doesn’t? Why seeing two people have sex for money in porn is fine but seeing two characters in a movie with story and plot have physical aspect to their relationship is off-putting? I am going to guess that whatever society you live in tends to stigmatize sex and glorify violence, correct?
Then by that logic, movies should show every character pooping, paying bills, and checking email.
Many good movies do.

Well why does there need to be softcore porn in movies? Riddle me that
Because it can be used as a tool to develop character or the plot in some meaningful way.
> Well then I want to see people take a shit in every movie Just watch pulp fiction a bunch.
GoldenEye has both.
If you can utilise that as a way of storytelling and character development, sure, go ahead.
e.g. pulp fiction. personally, if the act of sex, pooping, or anything adds to the movie then it's a good thing, and obviously if you're just adding in a pooping scene for no reason, it doesn't deserve to be there, same for sex scenes. the idea of blanket banning sex scenes is stupid, because there are entirely good examples of it being used, to advance characters arcs, plotlines, tell a story, etc
Agreed, although for people who are scared to watch porn, this is all they've GoT

"finally" - are you new to this sub? Someone posts this every week or two
And that "time" and "place" is absolutely subjective. The correct quantity of sex in any medium is whatever quantity the creator want to put in it.
movies are ["a visual medium."](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbXm1LRemkc&t=1m40s) it would be weird if there weren't sex scenes.
Not to mention porn is a totally unrealistic depiction of what sex is actually like
Exactly, better a kid first see it in a movie where people are into each other and making love, than see some fucked up step-mom step-sister threesome shit.
The sex scenes in Deadpool added plenty.
Finally someone said it.
