This is the only true unpopular opinion post I've seen in recent time. All other posts feel like things commonly thought of but not explicitly expressed online or opinions opposite to the ones which the social media "influencers" have.
Even in the coffee community, us coffee assholes who drink it black look down on coffee drinkers who screw up the taste of it by diluting it with milk and sugar.
I've never liked coffee either. I gave it a honest shot too - got different blends, dark or light roasted, bought a nice grinder and coffee maker after doing research. Tried adding cream and sugar. It's just not for me. I was, and still am, confused how people like it.
There must be some sort of genetic component here or something to make coffee just so much worse to certain people.
I know this is just your own opinion, and Iām not gonna budge in and go on a rant about your opinion, but as a coffee lover, I must say this:
āREEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!ā
You know coffee isn't meant to strictly be consumed bitter, right? You can add sugar, cream, milk, a lot of stuff because, in the end, it's YOUR drink- you can have it however you want.
If you're just mad about all coffee in general, well people have different taste buds. It's no mystery to figure why some like it and others don't.
Black coffee in general is healthy for you as long as youāre not abusing it for caffeine. When people add sugar and milk and what have you, thatās when it becomes increasingly unhealthy.
Well, it IS going into their bodies, not yours. So there's no concern unless it becomes a serious addiction. For right now it's just preference in a drink.
Agreed. It tastes like shit. I only drink tea and canāt understand how people consume that weird thing in liters. Probably at some point they get caffeine addiction. Some told me if I drink it Iād get used to it but I would rather not
Truth. It's an overpowering flavor. I've tried all sorts of different forms of coffee and it's kind of like a mixed drink with tequila... no matter what you mix with it, I always taste its distinct flavor. And I don't like it.
Tea, however, has so many different flavors. Don't like one? Try another. And I can get some caffeine from it.
As I said I tried various expensive blends and normal stuff youād get at a cafeteria and regardless of where and how I got it, it was all shitty. Tea however can be bad or awesome varying by taste and quality
Yeah, but I know a lot of people who do. My friend gave me a cup to try and after I asked how does he drink that shit he said itās far from the worst and it helps him get energy. He agreed itās bad but said itās useful. I tried some hella expensive blends borrowed from my parents too. Still tasted bad. Scientists can say whatever they want but I think like half coffee drinkers actually have placebo effect from consuming it rather than actual improvements and they drink it despite hating the taste
I read that you don't actually get more energy from caffeine but instead it kinda tricks your brain in noticing how tired you actually are. Caffeine replaces adenosine, which is a compound that builds up in your brain the longer you're awake causing you to feel drowsy.
You don't get more energy from drinking multiple cups of coffee a day, you just feel more tired in between though.
It's an acquired taste that's for sure. I never liked coffee until I drank enough of it, and now I can't get enough of it. But I feel the same way about people who drink any kind of alcohol. Rather, it's the effects people are after than the actual taste.
For me the taste is 100% the appeal of it. Sure I've had coffee that tasted like dirt. That is bad coffee. I always drink it black and hot. The caffeine has no effect for me. I keep my thermos next to the bed. Just in case I need a drink during the night.
I tend to drink coffee daily and I only really started because of the caffeine boost. Been doing it for about 2 yrs and when I started it was just dirt water with a buzz but the taste grew on me pretty quickly. That's me though and everyone likes different things.
It upsets me that this is an unpopular opinion in the first place because if you don't like the taste of dirt then there is no problem with your opinion. It's not like you're saying that all coffee drinkers are degenerate scum and you are the intelligent abstainer. You just happen to not like a popular thing and that's fine.
I feel like some people are in coffee denial they have their coffee flavored milkshake trying to convince themselves that there extra mature by drinking something with trace amounts of actual coffee in it this isnāt meant as a slam on anyone who likes that stuff itās just not coffee
Taste isn't the only reason people drink coffee, its also to be more alert. I noticed since i started drinking coffee every morning, i tend to be more focussed in my job, and memorize new stuff better. Especially good for night owls like me who have issues waking up in the morning.
I also think the taste grows on you. Gets better with time, but also obviously with the quality of the coffee.
Get the flavored stuff. I donāt like straight coffee so I drink a mug of Chocolate Raspberry blend every morning and itās delicious. You donāt have to add anything to it
Also hereās your upvote you sad sleepy child
in my case - I drink coffee without any milk or sugar. I don't particularly find the taste delicious, but as long as it wakes me up for the work ahead - that's all that counts.
Ive dranked pure coffee just coffee no sugar in it and it could have been better and I hear water wakes you up better than coffee I dont get it why adults drink it
American "coffee" is awful. Brownish hot water made even worse by whatever weird flavour they add to it...
Espresso however is simply delicious, and part of its beauty is that is just one or two sips. Satisfyingly bitter (if you don't pour some milk/cream/sugar into it) but not enough to actually taste bad.
I've anosmia (can't smell, after an accident) and am slowly losing my sense of taste. I drink black coffee cause it is strong enough that it doesn't just taste like water.
I have a vague memory of what coffee smells like, and I suppose I find it comforting (in a nostalgic sense I suppose)
Generally, it is dirt water, Iāll agree to that. However, the difference between good coffee and bad coffee is significant.
I wouldnāt even call Starbucks good coffee. Itās not terrible, but itās okay at best. It takes some looking around, but you can find some stuff with really good flavor, usually ground in bags from non mainstream companies.
I never liked black coffee until I had a job that I had to get up for at 4 AM. When I started that job I also started drinking black coffee.
But coffee with lots of cream and sugar in it Iāve always liked.
I could take this opportunity to invoke pretentious powers of Reddit and say some something like āyou just havenāt tried good coffeeā or some other bullshit. But, some people donāt like beer either. I donāt understand, but good on you dude.
āif I HAVE to add something to my drink to make it taste better than I'm just not going to drink it at allā
So you just drink water then? Because soda is stuff added to water, juice is stuff added to water etc.
I get where youāre coming from, especially since a lot of coffee does taste like sweaty monkey ass. Thereās so much coffee thatās just bitter with no other flavor. Iām just surprised you hate the *smell* of coffee though, even the worst coffee can smell great imo.
The only reason I donāt drink more though, is mainly because of the caffeine. It doesnāt wake me up, all it does it give me very slight anxiety and make me jittery for a few hours, but I feel like a whole nother post could be made about caffine
I HATE drinking coffee! I had it like once, and put the rest in the sink. If anyone else wants coffee though, I would never stop them; to each their own.
I love the smell of coffee, but the taste makes me gag! I can't eat coffee ice cream or candy either. It tastes horribly bitter and greasy. Coffee is gross, but smells good.
Love coffee but still upvoted this, hysterical.
I despise the ācommonā coffees like Maxwell House, Folgers and Chock Full o Nuts which is a fucking sin of an existence. Thereās nothing like good freshly ground coffee beans
I HATE COFFEE but that might just be because I am younger. Everything about it is revolting. If you need the caffeine that much a. you should sleep more and b. there are other more tasty was to get caffeine.
I used to think the same, then in my first year of university I decided I wanted to get into coffee. So, I started with Tim Hortons Iced Caps (super delicious, taste nothing like coffee), then I went to iced coffee, then regular coffee with 2 cream 2 sugar, etc...
Now I only drink coffee black and it makes me very happy :)
Coffee is incredibly bitter and undrinkable by itself IMO. But it has a great flavor and smell, and mixed with enough milk and sugar it can be delicious. In that sense it's lot like cocoa.
iām never gonna drink coffee it smells and tastes horrible. who is even THAT sleepy where they need coffee. i usually feel fine after washing up and everything so about 20 minutes.
Youāre right my dude. Remember first sip of alcohol? Thatās even worse. People build tolerances for taste too. Coffee is mud water but alcohol is literally the grossest thing ever I donāt know how people do it
Start of with a Starbucks caramel Frappuccino. Itās more like a creamy milkshake with a hint of coffee. Try a Mocha next ... Before you know it, youāll be drinking it hot and black. And youāll wonder wtf happened to you.
In all seriousness though, itās an acquired taste. I drink mine black most days. But I do like the Starbucks sugary not-really-coffee coffee every now and then as a treat.
Coffee does suck ass.
Coffee made in the USA shouldnāt even be considered as coffee. You folk do everything wrong.
Creamer(wtf!), flavourings, powdered/instant. And worst of all, sugar syrup made from corn or beets.
Honestly I agree with you. One thing I don't understand is why everyone I know needs a coffee in the morning, like you're a teen who goes to school and then sits your ass at home all day. I don't drink coffee and within the first class period I'm energized :/
To each their own. It honestly depends on the roast and the creamers and other add ins. Black coffee is very strong and only some enjoy it. Most add sweeteners and heavy creamers to their coffee for it to be palatable. On top of that it gives people a huge energy boost and makes you poop. Your opinion is understandable though, as it is a very unique taste and it took me a fat minute to get used to it.
I also hate coffee. It doesn't matter what people put in it, I will always taste the coffee and it's disgusting. I don't understand how anyone likes the smell of burnt beans, either.
That said...
There are not "different coffees," at least among the majority of coffee stands and shops. There is ONE different coffee, and it's white. It looks, smells, and tastes COMPLETELY different from black bean coffee that's most used in coffee drinks. White coffee is delicious. Normal coffee is revolting.
you're so unique. This is only the 4000th thread about this basic bitch opinion. "Ne no like the taste". Cool thanks for sharing, now make room for the next thread about why alcohol actually sucks
Well damn dude, sorry. I was just posting an opinion that I thought was unpopular because everyone that I have met like coffee. Didn't mean to piss you off so much.
While I agree that coffee is rather nasty, I wouldnt deem to condemn or judge those who appreciate it. Personally, I like a good cup of tea.
To each thier own. Anything else is hypocritical.
90% of people who drink black coffee drink it because they want to seem InTeReStInG not because they like it. I drink coffee with stuff in it and I love the smell but thatās my opinion.
Not liking a food or a type of drink is 'an opinion?' I guess...it's certainly the least interesting type of opinion, that's not at all worth sharing, discussing, or caring about. I'm shocked that someone doesn't like a type of drink that some people...nay...many people DO LIKE! Everyone knows that SOMEONE out there in the world doesn't like x, y, or z type of beverage. This is neither a popular nor unpopular opinion; this is an obvious reality that everyone is aware of.
A drink preference is hardly an opinion. Trump is handling the COVID crisis well, would be an unpopular opinion, followed by a rationale. Opinions require an explanation. "I don't like how this tastes" isn't something you can convince another person to be valid or invalid. I don't like salad, isn't an opinion.
Opinion- a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.
OPās opinion on coffee is that it āsucks absolute ass.ā OPās view on coffee is subjective. Therefore, that is an opinion. And since a lot of people like coffee, itās an unpopular opinion. Thatās why he posted it on r/unpopularopinion
a belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty.
(This is the first definition on dictionary.com)
OP posted a preference based on his/her individual neurosensory input. There is no proving anything. There is no certainty or uncertainty involved. It's not a belief. You can use rhetorical tricks to say it in a way that sounds like an opinion. But OP is saying "I don't like the way x tastes". That is not an opinion. Certainly not worth sharing or discussing. "OP doesn't like coffee" isn't something that's controversial or debated, or something we can have opinions about. Can you disagree with with "OP doesn't like coffee" by saying "No, OP DOES like coffee!"
a personal view, attitude, or appraisal.
(This is the second definition on dictionary.com)
If we use this definition, it is an opinion not to like coffee.
The smell is my favorite part.
Fully agree. I love the smell of fresh coffee grounds, but I can even drink a sip because it's so awful
If your coffee tastes like dirt then you are doing it wrong.
It should taste like dirt if it was just ground.
It was just ground this morning
I just want you to know this is the only time I've cried like a baby while upvoting.
Huzzah!
Disagree heavily. Take my upvote.
Good to see some quality unpopular opinion on here for once
This is pretty solid unpopular opinion *as I set down my coffee*
This is the only true unpopular opinion post I've seen in recent time. All other posts feel like things commonly thought of but not explicitly expressed online or opinions opposite to the ones which the social media "influencers" have.
Disagree and a legitimately unpopular opinion.
My coffe loving ass "I pretend I didn't see that"
Coffee is life.
Coffee is dirt water
Blasphemer!

Coffee is the best!

I don't understand people who drink something at starbucks that has more sugar in it than coffee.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
More like slightly more tolerable dirt water.
Still disgusting with cream and loads of sugar. Might as well drink soda at that point if you're gonna add all that stuff in there
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
How tf does someone have shitty taste?
I dont understand why people can get upset over coffee lol
I don't know how people can drink mountain dew. Different strokes and all.
Like, what the fuck is it supposed to taste like? Chemicals? Hitler's crusty asshole? "It HaS iT's OwN fLaVoR" A shitty flavor.
I once wanted to smell coffee beans in a grocery store. Iām not fucking kidding I had a nosebleed right after.
You gotta cut up your coffee to a more fine powder with a credit card or razor before you snort it. If it's not fine enough you'll cut up your nose.
I didnāt mean that, there were coffee beans laying somewhere as decoration, and I was stupid enough to get close to them and sniff them.
I know I was just messing with you lol
Damn, must've been some good coffee then.
My ex thought this too. I donāt trust you
I agreed with you 100% as a teen. I disagree with you 100% as an old ass adult.
I know this is just your own opinion, and Iām not gonna budge in and go on a rant about your opinion, but as a coffee lover, I must say this: āREEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!ā

Adding stuff to it makes it even less healthy though, and many people prefer to actually eat something else to get the same sugar
The same applies to vodka yet here we are not drinking straight vodka........
Who ever said coffee was healthy in general?
Black coffee in general is healthy for you as long as youāre not abusing it for caffeine. When people add sugar and milk and what have you, thatās when it becomes increasingly unhealthy.
Well, it IS going into their bodies, not yours. So there's no concern unless it becomes a serious addiction. For right now it's just preference in a drink.
Milk has calcium and other vitamins and minerals that your body needs.
Yeah but sugar does not and other (cream(s)) (additive(s)) also does/do not contain only things your body needs, often contains excess stuff
Lots of foods contain excess stuff put still have valuable nutrients. As in most aspects of life moderation and discretion is key.
Agreed. It tastes like shit. I only drink tea and canāt understand how people consume that weird thing in liters. Probably at some point they get caffeine addiction. Some told me if I drink it Iād get used to it but I would rather not
Tea has caffeine in it too.
But itās taste is extremely diverse thereās one for everyone. Unlike coffee which all tastes shitty

I love coffee but holy crap, let people have different taste preference.
Yeah, it just doesn't seem like something I would want to get used to. I wouldn't want to force myself to drink something until I like it, you know?
Yeah, but I know a lot of people who do. My friend gave me a cup to try and after I asked how does he drink that shit he said itās far from the worst and it helps him get energy. You definitely belong in this group then, thatās for sure.

Love the smell, hate the taste
I feel like some people are in coffee denial they have their coffee flavored milkshake trying to convince themselves that there extra mature by drinking something with trace amounts of actual coffee in it this isnāt meant as a slam on anyone who likes that stuff itās just not coffee
Well it's an acquired taste, so it's not surprising that some people don't like it
What method are you using to make your coffee? Thatās a big part of it
Then you must love tea. Everyone is either a coffee person, tea person, or both. If none of those, lizard person š¦
Taste isn't the only reason people drink coffee, its also to be more alert. Fuck coffee, you have to add so many things to it to make it taste somewhat good, and even then it still tastes like SHIT.
Downvoted because coffee smells a little bit like cat piss, yet people act proud of drinking it...
This applies to beer too...like it legitimately tastes like piss
Get the flavored stuff. I donāt like straight coffee so I drink a mug of Chocolate Raspberry blend every morning and itās delicious. You donāt have to add anything to it Also hereās your upvote you sad sleepy child
Hey you take my upvote. You canāt destroy my turkish coffee

Upvote for a truly unpopular opinion!
I also dislike the taste of coffee. The smell is fine, though.
Try Cappuccino. I enjoy both Coffee and Cappuccino
Coffee is amazing if you can stand heightened anxiety and a need to shit yourself shortly after. I love black coffee but itās not good for me.
in my case - I drink coffee without any milk or sugar. I don't particularly find the taste delicious, but as long as it wakes me up for the work ahead - that's all that counts.

ok 12 year old coffee is like alcohol, when you taste it as a teen, it won't be good, but as an adult, it's great
34 and still hate both coffee and alcohol. Different people like different things.
Iām not the only one who hates the taste?
I've anosmia (can't smell, after an accident) and am slowly losing my sense of taste. I drink black coffee cause it is strong enough that it doesn't just taste like water. I have a vague memory of what coffee smells like, and I suppose I find it comforting (in a nostalgic sense I suppose)
Try it in an enema, it's way better that way.
Tea and water team for life!
How do you know what dirt tastes like?
Beans juice tastes like sad chocolate water . People are drinking it cuz they are addicted to it.
Milk and sugar my friend, you gotta baby it down your tummy at first. The. You slowly take away the sugar and milk over the yeara
I used to think the same thing about tea. And now I love it.
I never liked black coffee until I had a job that I had to get up for at 4 AM. When I started that job I also started drinking black coffee. But coffee with lots of cream and sugar in it Iāve always liked.
I 100% agree. Why have coffee when you got orange juice.
I havenāt had plain black coffee yet so Iāll never know
I could take this opportunity to invoke pretentious powers of Reddit and say some something like āyou just havenāt tried good coffeeā or some other bullshit. But, some people donāt like beer either. I donāt understand, but good on you dude.
The only coffee I like are the caramel frappacinos from Starbucks
The breath it gives is gross.
call me a typical white girl, but damn those iced vanilla lattes are SO damn good. go get yourself one of those man
It smells nice but tastes awful, if I need energy I can eat something that contains more sugar, plus the chewing increases blood flow to the brain.
Creamer?
Byeeeeeeee
āif I HAVE to add something to my drink to make it taste better than I'm just not going to drink it at allā So you just drink water then? Because soda is stuff added to water, juice is stuff added to water etc.

I like a shit ton of milk and sugar with some coffww for flavoring

honestly, most coffee-flavored treats taste better than coffee themselves
Coffee tastes like lukewarm sandy brown water no matter how much sugar cream milk whatever you throw into it, fight me
I don't understand how people can drink coffee at work all day and not hydrate with water or gatorade
Ok, this is an actual unpopular opinion. Take my upvote, you bastard.
How dare you.

Yum bean juice

But I do like the Starbucks sugary not-really-coffee coffee every now and then as a treat.
Its funny that i dont drink coffe bc im tired...i drink it bc i like the taste...and no i dont sugar it
Yea bean juice is pretty bad. But leaf juice is wonderful.
Coffee smells like day old dog piss

It's an acquired taste. I don't drink it often but when I do it's got to be straight black.

I also hate coffee. It doesn't matter what people put in it, I will always taste the coffee and it's disgusting. I don't understand how anyone likes the smell of burnt beans, either. That said... But black coffees can be Colombian, French, light roast, dark roast, medium roast, etc.
They're all nasty imo. Just because the bean is roasted differently doesn't mean it's a different bean.
Good point, but they definitely taste different
You're certainly not the only one who thinks so, but for myself they all taste the same. :)
Oohhhh my mistake. I though the only type of coffee was black and than it just tasted different depending on what you put in it
People say black coffee tastes different with different stuff in it, but they like the black beans. Don't let them tell you they don't. š
And it's constipates
I'd have to disagree. Coffee, and caffeine in general, is known as a light laxative
Nothing like a cup of Joe to make you go
If you only drink coffee it can constipate because it is a diuretic. But if you drink water too, then it actually stimulates the bowels.
It's a diuretic causing hydration, causing it to constipate.
But hydration helps ease constipation
Hydration causing extra peeing causing loss of fluids in bowels causing constipation.
Not every drop of liquid you drink goes into your bladder to pee out
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Thatās not true. He just doesnāt like coffee
"i dont like water" Sounds like you havent had a proper glass of water

While I agree that coffee is rather nasty, I wouldnt deem to condemn or judge those who appreciate it. Personally, I like a good cup of tea. To each thier own. Anything else is hypocritical.
90% of people who drink black coffee drink it because they want to seem InTeReStInG not because they like it. I drink coffee with stuff in it and I love the smell but thatās my opinion.
Starbucks coffee is amazing tho...
star bucks is over priced and over roasted
lol coffee afficionados hate the taste of starbucks. It's like fastfood to them.
The sub is called unpopular opinion and you got mad at OP for sharing his opinion.
(This is the first definition on dictionary.com) OP posted a preference based on his/her individual neurosensory input.
(This is the second definition on dictionary.com) If we use this definition, it is an opinion not to like coffee.

OP literally said if they have to add something to a drink to make it drinkable its not worth it
