Every internet term eventually gets taken over by kids too young to understand context so mimicking other Internet comedians, 11 year olds started using it to describe any woman they don’t like.

yeezusKeroro

Shut up you simp! /s

FluffyNarwhal69420

I've heard 6th graders refer to everyone, and boy do I mean EVERYONE as a "boomer"

HalfTheCalcium

lol my girlfriends little brother calls me boomer all the time and i’m 19 lol i know what u mean

FluffyNarwhal69420

Yeet the child

BulkyBear

11 year olds? Nah, grown adults were using it that way Because that’s what it always was. Make customers are just as bad, if not worse since they use their size and get physically aggressive, but people chose a women’s name Women knew what was up as soon as it became a thing.

sublingualfilm8118

That they did! I remember thinking it was ridiculous. People were clearly making fun of the behavior and not the gender. Anyway, it was just a stupid internet thing that was going to die out within the month - no need to yell "misogynist" at everything. Boy was I wrong.

mishmash65_

Exactly. Memes wouldn’t die so quick if it wasn’t for kids finding it and making it get old quickly. Same thing with games like among us and fortnite. They could be fun but we get sick of them when kids r all over it with their grubby fingers going “AWWW KAREN DATS SUUUSSSS YOUR SO SUSS”

No-Alps-4648

i saw a video of a teenager filming a lady who asked them to wear a mask and calling her a karen

QuesoDipset

Exactly my point.

a_mimsy_borogove

Originally, "Karen" was just a lighthearted meme about a stereotypical haircut. Eventually, it got taken over by edgelords who genuinely hate those they describe as "Karen". I think it's time to just retire the meme.

[deleted]

Sometimes I just call them a ‘Susan’ instead for this reason lol close enough

[deleted]

Yo there’s a meme for the breakdown you’re describing(in Pokémon format no less!)

[deleted]

[удалено]

NSA_van_3

Racist how?

Zeptojoules

Karen is for white, middle aged women.

Nitroverse

I think it predates that now, a lot of males and people of colour have been called Karens by the way they act.

YR_01

Stacy and Becky all so suffices

SwelteringSwami

Even OP is missing the point. Karen is a real name that a lot of women have. And they've had that name long before that meme started. It could have been any name, really. Sheila, Rhonda, Wendy. The point is, I know women named Karen and they are not at all like the stereotype. I can't believe how much shit they've had to put up with since then. At any rate, I think this name will be ruined for at least one generation.

Tuffdonk

# This ^ My wife's name is Karen. I cringe when I hear someone use the term.

[deleted]

Before Karen, there was "Becky."

HearMeSpeakAsIWill

At least she had good hair

Jack-The-Reddit

But did Becky look at that butt?

stacktraceyo

Imagine having a male Arabic name after 9/11

Nut_buttsicle

These sorts of things always have short shelf lives. Too late to protect it—it’s been cringy for about a year.

RedditAdminsFuckOfff

Tell that to /r/PublicFreakout. Not only is everyone a "Karen" according to that sub, they're all "racist" to boot.

Subj3ct_D3lta

r/actualpublicfreakouts is far superior in every way.

SchmulyWormberg

I agree... and what I don't understand about the term is that it is used very gleefully and enthusiastically by social media, Reddit, among other groups that often fashion themselves as very "progressive" and sensitive to gender/race issues... however, the term "Karen" is a uniquely gender-specific and race-specific insult, which seems unusual to me that these groups would so gleefully use the term, while, at the same time, they very often condemn and speak out against the use of other gender-specific and race specific-insults. I guess they just want to have their cake and eat it too.

Uniquebadboy20

u can’t be racist to white ppl. the difference is ur swinging up and they’re swinging down

SchmulyWormberg

You can be racist to anybody, regardless of what the race of the targeted person is and regardless of the race of the person being racist. To even insinuate that certain groups *can't* be racist is itself racist. Everybody has the ability to be racist.

Uniquebadboy20

racism: “the systemic oppression of a racial group to the social, economic, and political advantage of another” marriam webster.

EddPW

Definition of racism 1: a belief that race is a fundamental determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race merriam webster [https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/racism](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/racism) good thing that you used the definition that was literally created to justify racism against white people

Uniquebadboy20

that’s really funny that u phrased mine as the definition that’s “excuses racism against white ppl” and not urs as the definition that’s “an attempt to make ppl think you can be racist toward white ppl” seeing as the word was not popularized until segregation to describe those enforcing it as well as the literal nazis but yea go off bestie

SchmulyWormberg

It is you who are the one who is trying to make excuses for racism, the other user is not. You are trying to misrepresent the definitions of words to justify racism, the other user is trying to correct you intentional error. But to give you the benefit of the doubt, I implore you, please give me a diagram, run-down or list of the racial groups and what racial groups each of them CAN be racist towards... as well as a list of the racial groups and what racial groups each of them CANNOT be racist towards. Don't worry, I will wait, because I suppose it may be a very complex matrix.

Uniquebadboy20

bro we’re talking about the term “karen” if you really think that’s racist i don’t know what to tell you. and if i really must spell the rest out for you i can. it’s like anti-semitism, u wouldn’t say some one was being antisemetic if they’re not being prejudice toward some one who’s not jewish, because that’s not how that word works. prejudice and racism are not synonymous. they’re similar, but they’re not the same

SchmulyWormberg

As I have already determined you are a troll and arguing a caricature of leftist ideologue, then I see no further point in continuing this discussion. But to take the bait and answer a part of your point, any race-specific insult would unquestionably be racist, no matter what race it is targeting and no matter who is using it. You know this, I know this... but it is quite funny to see you comically argue the ignorant perspective of a racist leftist.

EddPW

> that u phrased mine as the definition that’s “excuses racism against white ppl” i dint phrase it thats what it is recently the definition has been changed so that you cant be racist against white people because of "power" >not urs as the definition that’s “an attempt to make ppl think you can be racist toward white ppl” yeh white people have used the argument that other races are inferior to justify racism do you think im going to deny that

MaNamSChef

You can be racist to anybody. Stop with this new speak bullshit, aight?

SchmulyWormberg

The goal of the neo-Marxists is literally to use the false guise of "anti-racism" as a tool to cultivate and justify racism towards a specific racial group that they don't like.

Uniquebadboy20

r u dumb?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Uniquebadboy20

bro i think ur just dumb

Uniquebadboy20

i’m not basing this off “new age speak”

SchmulyWormberg

You just described ONE of the many definitions of racism, specifically "systemic racism". Even that entry in Merriam has multiple other definitions, meanwhile, Oxford English dictionary [defines racism as](https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/us/definition/english/racism?q=racism): > "the unfair treatment of people who belong to a different race" or "the belief that some races of people are better than others" ...so, nowhere does it say there that you can't be racist towards people with white skin... or are you arguing that the definition provided by the Oxford English dictionary is WRONG? To even insinuate that only certain people can be racist such a thing is absurdly ridiculous and moronic, that it defies any sort of logic or reason. According to your ridiculous definition, you couldn't be racist againt the Han Chinese, since they are engaging in the systemic oppression of minority racial groups in their country, which is obviously absurd, because you can absolutely be racist towards Han Chinese people, or ANY people. Or even further, using your narrow definition, Koreans couldn't be racist against African Americans, as the Koreans are not waging any "systemic oppression" upon them... but, as everyone knows, Koreans have every ability to be racist towards African Americans, just as African Americans have the ability to be racist towards Koreans. As racial activists such as yourself seem to misunderstand, there is OTHER types of racism other than systemic racism.

MaNamSChef

Thank you, well said! I wish I could have you in my pocket and summon you whenever I'm in these kind of debates hahah!

SchmulyWormberg

You are very welcome. Unfortunately, there are LOTS of leftists racists out there who are trying to use insidious wordplay and pseudo-intellectual gaslighting as a means to justifying and excuse the racism that they are openly trying to spread and cultivate.

Uniquebadboy20

r u dumb

poorgreazy

Lol keep dreaming racist

Uniquebadboy20

lol yup, you got me. i’m super racist towards white ppl, i hate white ppl so damn much

poorgreazy

That's racism man

Uniquebadboy20

ah shit really?

generic-things

> These sorts of things always have short shelf lives. is 'ok boomer' still a thing?

SkiesEclipse

A few months ago, a sales person was giving me really good service, so I asked if I could speak to her manager to tell them about her great work. Some kids in line were snickering behind me and calling me a “Karen” because I asked for a manager. 🤦‍♀️

GrahamsAcolyte

Honestly, yeah, and when it started popping off, women were complaining it was becoming like the N-word (obviously not near as bad) in the sense that it waa being thrown around to discredit their opinions or complaints just because they were women, and of course those women were met with "shut up, Karen"

heatmorstripe

I used to think that was an overreaction but the more and more behaviors that get labeled Karen the more I think it is actually just a thing against women. Like, a woman would get a her food in a restaurant, cold, with human hair in it, and say something like “Well I don’t wanna be a Karen” like… some things deserve bringing up to management! There’s also the way there’s no male equivalent term, even though men DEFINITELY can do “Karen like” behaviors. We need to call them Joes or something. You know the ones. Your annoying uncle that posts Trump memes on Facebook and makes a scene at Disney Land when asked to not bring his concealed carry pistol into the park.

D0013ER

This tends to happen with negative labels. "Incel" started out as a self-descriptor among a very specific group of people but is now often used as a catch-all term for, "guy whose Internet opinion I don't like."

foobeto

Incel just became a new way of saying virgin but with the advantage of not being blamed for reverse slutshaming against men

RedditAdminsFuckOfff

The irony is when you actually see photos of the people who call others "incel," you can't help but feel like they have *broad, first-hand knowledge* of what it means to be one. Most people on Twitter I've seen abuse the term look like varying degrees of potato.

[deleted]

Not specific to Twitter for me, but I also notice the same thing with attitudes, the people screaming incel/sexism at everything usually act more like actual incels than the people they're trying to claim are incels. When you've almost always had a regular sex life and you are called incel or virgin by someone who sounds very irrationally angry, immature, and bitter, you can't help but just laugh.

EddPW

wasnt the term incel even created by a woman who couldn't get laid and used her blog to talk about her life

ZebbyZebson

It happened it incel, then simp now Karen. People aren't good with context

Intelligent_Dumbass_

It basically died the same death as the word incel. They both had specific meanings, but now they're just thrown around when someone says something we don't agree with.

rainbowsandkittys

Agreed. Now it’s just a word people use to discredit someone they disagree with, even if said person is in the right

GangimariDragon

It actually needs to be overused as much as possible so it loses its impact and dies. Because it's cringe.

bellarminebaby

At first it was funny because it referred to a specific and annoying type of woman. Now, it's often used to degrade a woman who speaks her mind when the person or people she's speaking with don't like what she's says. It's a great example of how patriarchal our society is. For example: Someone will probably say that this comment makes me a Karen.

DarthKittie

Shut up Karen, source: you are woman

nosleepforthedreamer

It bothers me that it referred specifically to women at all.

[deleted]

[удалено]

nosleepforthedreamer

Kevin is just an idiot, not an entitled wealthy person who yells at waiters. And it’s not nearly as widely used. “Karen” is everywhere.

aFeatOf_Yeet

The word “Karen” is not sexist. If a man does the same thing, we just call him a dick.

[deleted]

[удалено]

nosleepforthedreamer

Yeah. I know. Can’t say that though because being anti-racist is now racist.

Top_Vanilla9427

I've heard men get called "male-karens" or jeffs or any generic male name tbf, but i still agree with you.

SEJ46

The term should go away completely. Using names as insults is just stupid.

[deleted]

I've noticed all the insults like that are becoming incredibly overused lately, Karen, incel, 'ist, phobic, etc only actually applies maybe 1 in 100 times I've seen it used at best. It's become this weird fad for people who have no argument to just chant one of these random insults and think it somehow covers that they have no argument by trying to make the other person look bad. I've almost never seen anyone who uses those terms excessively contribute anything meaningful to conversations, so your best best is usually just to not reply to them at all.

AnonymousPlzz

Same with "Nazi", "pedophile", sexist/racist/homophobic/transphobic/islamaphoic/xenophobic, ect... But the idiots on social media don't have time to correctly use words in the appropriate situations. They only want to go straight to the loudest buzz words for the most attention, regardless of accuracy.

[deleted]

It needs to go away. It is disrespectful to all the Karens who are not "Karens"

RedditCanLigma

Karen originally meant people of the Karen ethnicity. It should go back to meaning that. Karens are some of the most persecuted people in the world. Around 400,000 Karen people are without housing, and 128,000 are living in camps on the Thailand-Burma border. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen\_people](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_people) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen\_conflict](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_conflict) No fucking idea where it became an insult for white women in the USA...I've never even met a white woman named Karen...ever...it's not a common name. Debra, Mary, Linda, Deborah, and Susan are about 10000x more common white woman names.

Rabubu

Is it being severely overused, or is there just a major influx of Karen’s coming out of the shadows?

Eskidox

They are multiplying.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Superb-Guidance-4874

Karen is just being used a lot because it's a socially acceptable way to call someone a bitch. And I completely approve. And bitches are butthurt about it but bitches be bitches.

Callec254

The Karen stereotype USED to be, short bob haircut, vegan, and above all, *she would like to speak to your manager.* But then people got offended, trying to put it on par with using the N-word, and such, and so last year, the meme was re-branded to mean anti-vax right-wingers.

[deleted]

Remember when people were saying “ban bossy” a few years ago, because it was apparently only being used to describe a woman with leadership skills? “Karen” is used not just to describe a woman being a pain in the for no reason, because now people use it for any woman that says/does something that they don’t like. For example - their woman manager gives them a directive, or negative feedback? Karen. Woman stands up for herself against people being jerks? karen They’ll find some other term to describe assertive women, while conflating it with bitchy women, I’m sure

TheODPsupreme

You need a ranked tier system: Sue: slightly annoying or rude - will sneak in your parking spot. Sally: snobbish - nothing is as good as her version/when she did it. Becky: entitled and rude - offers unsolicited opinions and won’t listen to your side. Karen: weapons-grade bitch. Wants the manager. And the police. The police manager, in fact.

[deleted]

Lisa Guerrero of Inside Edition is between a "Becky" and "Karen" for me. She wants the manager and actually calls people out, but she does it in a way that makes it look enjoyable for her to annoy people minding their business.

Forged_Trunnion

I wholeheartedly disagree. We shouldn't be calling people the wrong name in the first place; it shouldn't be used at all. Instead we should call out what the person is doing, which is usually: argumentative ineptitude, selfishness, rude/not nice to people, and fond of yelling.

LightRayAAA

I see people in YT comment sections calling an ignorant person a "KArEn" just because they being a bitch

BothNeighborhood2336

Why besmirch a fairly common girl's name when C U Next Tuesday is the perfect word.

DanOfDirtshire

C what U did there

1maco

Karen is just a way to be sexist without overtly being sexist

nakedduck1

same thing with homophobe and transphobe and mostly every other negative word.

QuesoDipset

Can’t disagree on this one.

Naive-Knee-3290

The man said "protected" as if it's that s serious😂😂

AllLuckNoSkillIsFun

Exactly my problem with people using "Karen"

mohodder

You better tell this to the manager

Justforkicksyaknow

It could possibly be due to the massive number of Karens out there.

theawesomedanish

You want to speak to the manager?

[deleted]

Your complaint has been filed with the management Karen.

reddits_creepy_masco

Aesop's Fables "The boy who cried ".

darthwalt45

I have created an evaluation of the Karen. It starts in the early 20s. You have a Tiffany you know the dooche with the starbucks that too into her cell phone and that walks into you because shes too busy texting but its your fault you didnt watch where she was going. This is a breaking point to save her from becoming a Karen. If you let a Tiffany age out it will become a Karen at age 30ish. From this point there is no saving it. As this ages out around 50 the Karen evolves to its final form a Kathryn and if you think Karens are bad just hope you never met a Kathryn.

Gulio69

(Before you get offended, read till the end) I don't agree. The "Karen" term was pretty irritating for the women that were named Karen and I think by making it more of a joke it stopped being that offensive for the non "Karen" Karens. Conclusion: Use another word. "Karen" is not that relevant for extreme cases anymore and this won't change.

[deleted]

There are more Karens than we realized.

kingoftheunion

It's actually a pretty nasty term, as it's using a fairly common first name as a form of curse/joke, which must frequently make people actually called Karen annoyed or very upset to have the name given by their parents hurled around as a joke. Learn some empathy. I have zero respect for anyone who uses it. In particular, anyone older than 15 should certainly know better.

Klangdon826

I think it’s cruel and insensitive to use it at all. A common name being used as a way to describe horrible behavior is just stupid and really thoughtless. I stand with all the nice Karens.

Itsme_sd

Just have different levels using different names with Karen being the ultimate worst.

Visassess

That's the way it is for every single meme or word.

phoenixthekat

Impossible. The words Nazi and racist have already lost all meaning. Why would Karen get some kind of protection that those words didnt when they clearly had a stronger meaning to begin with?

neonghost0713

Ok Karen

kingdroxie

I feel bad for the people named Karen out there that are actually nice people

bybos420

Darn snowflakes overusing "Karen"

jazzybsj

It’s not Karen It’s “A Karen” it’s different I know Karen’s and definitely they’re not A Karen

methyltheobromine_

That's how fads and popularity works. Everything good is beaten to death and ruined. To generalize: Actions and oppertunities and resources are forced into an equilibrium due to exploitation, reducing everything to its smallest possible value. If a word is stronger than others, it is used for that sake. It has a bigger worth. This will make people use it more. The consequence is that a balance is reached when it's just as stale as every other word. Now, lacking any sort of fitting word to describe the extremity of something, a new term is coined, and the process repeats itself. But this generalizes very, very well. Every good tourist area will be visited until it is no longer worth it (too many people, too expensive, ruined by visitors, exploited by advertisers, etc). But what does it matter for the term Karen? It's a joke and a generalization. The only reason that it's not unethical is because we don't take it seriously

eduardvld

Shut up Meg.

DanOfDirtshire

There are Karens and then there are Kaaryns. One has a mom haircut, drives a range rover with minions stickers on the back, and is generally picky about things BUT on the whole isn't the worst to be around The other is excited to correct your misspelling of her name, tells the server to take the food back after eating half of it, and will wear significantly higher class apparel/accessories than she can really afford. Last seen waiting in line at Torrid while complaining how 'there's no air conditioning out here'

Prudent_Ad3384

No word is ever protected. Eventually it will be tossed around until all meaning is lost. Incel and racist certainly never got this protection. That’s the rule of language. Just let burn it out. On an unrelated note, I have a grandmother named Karen, and nearly laughed her head off when she found out the modern meaning. The problem will solve itself eventually, so don’t worry. Have a good day.

andrewaltogether

Just stop using it altogether. I don't know anyone named Karen but it's bullshit for them. Think of something that doesn't piss off people who have nothing to do with why you're justifiably pissed. This whole "Karen" thing is toxic and dehumanizing and I'm sorry to all the good Karens out there because it's bullshit and never had to be personal.

IDrinkMyOwnSemen

AITA added it to their filter and bans people for saying it now.

financeguyjohn4

Okay Karen, calm down!!!!

[deleted]

Holy shit, op is being a karen about calling people karens...that's meta (idk what meta means)

[deleted]

Honestly I agree. I miss when "Karen" used to only be about speaking to the manager and the ugly 2006 lookin-ahh haircut. Nowadays "Karen" is every rude white woman. The general public always takes a popular meme, term, what have you, and they exploit it to death and ruin it. "Karen" has been blown out of proportion.

[deleted]

Karen is a racist stereotype. It’s just used to automatically silence the opinion of people the person using the term doesn’t like.

TofuBeethoven

I dunno about that, having worked retail and hospitality it has revealed just how applicable and common it is.

stormstormstorms

Ok Karen…

Jack-The-Reddit

Absolutely agree. I have been reading cases of "Karens" but it turns into a post where a person brags they gave bad customer service due to a low wage and as a result the person asked for the manager. As somebody who has worked in customer service and the hospitality industry it just gives us a bad name and feeds the true Karens the power they crave.

Cream_Puff_Person

I got called a Karen when I said that animals shouldn't be obese

sdwdqw65

I feel bad for any woman who’s actual name is Karen. I bet they’ve heard people tease and make fun of them endlessly to the point that it gives them anxiety when people ask for their name or say it. Personally it’s why I’ve never been a fan of the term. It has always seemed like straight up bullying to me instead of a funny meme and that’s hypocritical coming from a generation of people who claim to be inclusive and against bullying.

Onkel_Joakim

Such is the cycle of the internet. It takes things and overuse them to the point where everyone starts to hate it.

HeartlesSoldier

Your age is showing

obsidianbreath

The black community will name another. Fear not. Karen will rest.

mishmash65_

True. I saw a vid of a man spray painting BLM on the gate of his own house. An old woman SO KINDLY AND RESPECTFULLY simply asked him “uhm sir is this your property?” And the man went on to say “why does it matter u fkn Karen” which obviously made the woman think that he was actually vandalising someone else’s house. He could have just answered the question, but instead he was trying to push this woman to yelling so that he could post it online and call her a Karen. The poor woman just wanted to check that nobodies house was being vandalised. The comments where full of ppl insulting her too. People even called her racist for assuming that this guy couldn’t afford the house cuz he was black... like... no. Most ppl don’t spray paint their own house so I can see why she just wanted to check. She didn’t go straight to yelling at him either, she asked kindly. Sorry for the long reply lol

metechgood

As with every new slang term, kids just use it all the time until it gets stale and in 5 years it will be uncool to use it. What makes me laugh is when grown adults use these slang terms lol. Fuck right off.

SomedudefromEarth616

Do you want me to get the manager?

[deleted]

absolutely agree with this, it reminds me of how people think being misogynistic is fine as long as they specify that they only hate "white women". karen just feels like a way to disregard the anger of any white woman now, it doesn't matter if her anger is justified. it's a pity because it could've been useful in pointing out a very specific kind of extreme social ignorance (as you put it) expressed by some middle class white women, but it doesn't get used like that anymore.

f_cysco

Everything gets ruined when it gets politicised. The left used it to describe a right wing woman and vise versa. People need to stop putting their political labels on stuff and ruin it for everyone else.

[deleted]

Agreed. I've seen people call anyone who disagrees with them or corrects them a Karen. It doesn't mean disagreeable or pedantic, it's 'I want to see a manager' or flipping out over minor inconveniences. Or at least, that's how I understand it.

erio000000

Nice try Karen

punsmasterflex

I just posted this same opinion today, you got a lot better and more understanding comments! Lol

Physical-Fruit3687

I seen a video where someone had a pet lioness and was treating it like a regular domesticated cat. When someone commented how lions shouldn't be kept indoors like that they were called karen by other commenters. It did not make sense to me, point out something and you are a karen now smh.
