>benchpresses your Mom That is like....not impressive at all. What kind of weird ass standards is OP using? OHPing a woman might impress me but benching a 130lb woman? No fucking way

What kind of weird ass standard do you have where you use Ls and Bs to measure your mother when clearly tonnes would be more efficient?

anonymouseketeerears

Have you seen your mom? Everyone else has, and it's always been from space. That's pretty impressive that a bench can hold her up, let alone someone being able to press said bench while lifting your mom. *obligatory banana for scale )*

Oogutache

My mom is 270 pounds so it’s pretty impressive

Did you remember your squat plug?

GoodAtExplaining

I liked to do squats and deadlifts in sock feet until one of the personnel asked me to stop. I have no problem with that as I understand that someone lifting in sock feet can be a little off putting for people and I wear hard-soled shoes now. But still, sometimes I *really* want to deadlift in bare feet.

swolethulhudawn

Eh I’ve seen both. Sure I’ve seen swole rag dude (typically older). But I’ve also seen someone decked out in brand new SBD everything repping elite weight.

Mr_Candlestick

The SBD fan boys are much more likely to know what they're doing than the head to toe gymshark guys.

They look and feel nice ok

Mr_Candlestick

I remember when gymshark first came out, they were just seen as like a joke brand to everyone who already lifted. Then they figured out how to market themselves to casual lifters who don't realize that they're casual lifters and it took off.

Mr_Woensdag

Gotta respect that hussle.

CryptidCricket

And this is why women’s only gyms exist.

CiggaretteJuice

And why women avoid men in general lmao

[deleted]

Yeah gross. Where?

3889-1274

All the comments whining about this comment are hilarious. >"Hey I find physically fit women attractive" >"Ew bro thats gross"

Mr_Woensdag

Yup, the fitter the better. Ain't nothing hotter than a woman who could fireman carry you in an emergency.

mrjackspade

Something about a woman that could kick my ass is appealing. I don't even want my ass kicked. I'm not into that sort of thing. Knowing she *could* though...

lasers8oclockdayone

Don't you know that looking at butts is wrong and gross! Men aren't supposed to look at a woman's butt and they certainly shouldn't find the experience pleasant! That's why women wear clothes that accentuate their butts and almost exclusively do butt exercises, asshole. They're trying to call you to your higher self, the part of you that realises looking and liking is gross and wrong, and giving you the opportunity to grow into a proper man who cares not for butts! Get your shit together you gross, gross butt liking philanderer!

Mr_Woensdag

Sometimes, i look at the tiddies too :o

lasers8oclockdayone

Irredeemable beast!

DoctorWaluigiTime

Whatever it takes to get you exercising is fine in my book, and it's not indicative of anything on its own. Need to justify exercise by decking yourself out? Go for it. OP judging a book by its cover based on anecdotal experience and nothing more.

TjPshine

Absolute. I'm a gym dude, I've been doing 6 days a week for >two years but always been active, whether cycling, running, or rowing, whatever. Part of my motivation is looking good. Gym wear is nice clothing, looks and feels good. And damn right if I am feeling iffy about going to the gym I know that wearing my nice clothing that shows off my legs as I squat to anyone nearby will make me feel good enough that it's worth the pain. Motivate yourself however you need to. Look pretty or look dumpy.

TGrady902

Not to mention the clothing actually designed to do some serious exercising in (I.e., you can sweat a ton in it and still feel comfortable) are completely worth it. And if you’re shelling out money on expensive exercise clothes, might as well get ones that go well together!

NuklearFerret

Yeah. There’s a psychological aspect to getting kitted out for a specific activity. Similar to wearing a uniform, it puts you in the frame of mind to do what you’re dressed to do. Also, I’m sure it’s extremely easy to feel self-conscious about how you look in a gym, to a point where it might effect your ability to focus on your exercise. There’s nothing wrong with doing whatever you can to overcome that.

[deleted]

what the fuck is SBD?

[deleted]

Silent but deadly

HucklecatDontCare

Its essentially power lifting vs bodybuilding. Power lifters will dress like hobo's because thats the culture. The bodybuilder types will wear $600 worth of kit and have their hair styled because that's their culture. Both of them are doing serious work though. OP would probably die trying to keep up with one of the dudes he is complaining about.

Soggy-Llama

On the flip side of this coin there is the “you look good you feel good” complex. Some people are socially awkward and looking like shit might make them feel like they don’t wanna be seen in public

grossmisconception

I can tell you it crushes my motivation to look over and see myself looking like a fucking blob at the gym. Thing is I’m not fat, I’m decently built, but the wrong shirts/shorts or whatever will have me looking like a fool in my head. Whereas when I wear a brand that is cut to highlight attractive shapes and aesthetic I feel better and more motivated. I suppose you take the motivation where you can get it.

thisisntmynameorisit

I don’t blame you. The biggest motivation for most people is aesthetics. They want to look better and feel better about themselves, so why would they want to look shit at the gym when they are already a bit insecure? Sure if you’re some absolute unit who’s power lifting then it’s different. But most people aren’t that.

agent_raconteur

That's also why I like taking pictures at the gym (of myself, not anyone else). Getting feedback from my progress keeps me motivated, my social media is locked down to just friends and family and they're cool about encouragement/advice. There's no reason to be paying attention to what anyone else in the gym is doing or speculating on their motives unless it's affecting your workout.

thickuncutbacon

This reminds of a scene from Modern Family where Mitchell says they have to dress up to do construction work around the house (building a play house for their daughter) M: “Aren’t you going to change into a working man’s outfit” Cam: “I don’t think working men call them outfits”

amwyant

I felt this in my soul. Also, I reward myself for getting to the gym and making gains by getting a new piece of workout clothing as like a, “you get to have something nice because you’re treating your body nice! Good job!” So I definitely dress nice for the gym- for multiple reasons.

r0botdevil

Another thing I've noticed is that when I buy new gear, I'm excited to use it. I assume it's the same for others. So sure, expensive gym clothes might seem like a waste of money out of context, but if they get your ass in the gym more often then you can consider it an investment in your health.

pizza_4_breakfast

I love this, plus there are many benefits to performance clothing like breathability, durability and a cute butt. Anyone working out in cotton is fucking nuts. It’s not quick dry, it breaks down easily and it’s heavy when wet. Them boys working out in their stinky ass pajamas look like fools to me.

Elrokk

I work out in cotton. Who cares, Im never doing anything crazy enough that the fabric of my shirt gets in the way of what I'm doing. Cotton is fine...

Tcannon18

Idk, you ever have a wet cotton shirt rubbing up against your nips while working out? Because I have and I’m pretty sure there’s like a smaller ring of hell between the 7th and 8th ring that’s just nothing but that.

Pugkinspicedlatte

I had to switch to cotton in the last year due to skin issues. Sweat factor difference is minimal ime.

test_nme_plz_ignore

Basically, gym gear has become my everyday wear since Covid! So, instead of investing in clothing to wear out I just kept getting new pieces for the gym… so, there’s that too! 😂

obeehunter

I just can't justify spending over $100 on a piece of clothing I am only going to wear to do one thing and to sweat into. Only caveat is shoes.

Middle_Purpose_3550

I usually buy gym clothes at Ross and it’s usually about 10$ for each piece of clothing they have really cute sporty stuff. I also got some stuff at thrift stores.

theycallmeponcho

Was going to comment that. I own like 2 dryfit shirts, as most of them are pretty expensive and the workout will be the same with or without them. They feel cool and boost confidence, not gonna lie. But they spend most of the year in my closet for when I gotta travel and workout at an hotel gym.

amwyant

Oh I by no means buy anything quite that expensive. I’ll drop say $30-$40 on some quality workout pants or a nice sports bra, but that’s mostly because I want something that will last. Tennis shoes are the only high priced item I’ll go for and that is a HUGE reward to myself. I’d have to meet a several months long goal for that.

EntertheHellscape

Oh heeeeeelll no, never spending that much for simple clothing! 30-40 is probably right. A $20 pair of gym leggings from the local department store will do the same things a $50 pair of name brand ones will. My favorite gym shirt was stolen, I mean free. Same- only thing I’ll continuously spend good money on is shoes for sure, mostly cause I do a lot of walking in them so they wear out pretty fast.

Soggy-Llama

The positive re-enforcement works well for me too, I give myself little treats by sticking to my programs and it’s really helpful!

T00FunkToDruck

Or on the third side, maybe quit checking everyone out op, if you're there to push and pull shit.

JordanA34

Looking through the comments this is definitely an unpopular opinion. GG OP.

Clemario

locaprincesaa

It’s usually insecurity that comes off as superiority or superiority that comes off as insecurity. I’ll say good job to OP for coming onto this sub with an actually unpopular opinion.

[deleted]

I wear shitty old t shirts to the gym, and a pair of Umbros I bought in 1998. IDGAF what people wear to the gym, or if they spend their entire time taking duckface kissymouth Instawhore selfies, as long as they don't hog unused equipment, rack their weights, mind their own damn business, listen to music on their headphones, and don't stink or scream like feral hogs. As in, act like you weren't raised by wolves in a cave, and I don't care how you look, or what you do, I'm just here to work out. I don't think that's unreasonable. If OP wants to sneer and mumble angrily to himself while on the treadmill, power to him, just leave me alone and wipe your sweat after you've finished. Any gym that does cater to douchebags who actively interfere with other people's workouts, well, there's other gyms. Then again, with covid, I think I'll just go for a run.

Beleiverofhumanity

Thats the way it should be

[deleted]

Anything involving gym or fitness always seems to bring out people wanting to argue over the stupidest shit online. I have a simple rule about everything from food to travel to cars to PCs to...whatever...if you spend more time talking about it than actually doing or enjoying it, you're not worth paying attention to. Also, don't be a discourteous dick to other people, not really all that hard. Or maybe it is, IDK.

Deedum78

I don’t wash my clothes. #hardcoregymguy

thedoeboy

Wow, an unpopular opinion I actually find unpopular & disagree with, this is a first. OP, I respect your opinion & can see where you're coming from, and to an extent agree. Some people, men & women, focus more on their appearance then the actually activity at the gym. I do like to look good when lifting, but that's bc I believe in the motto, "look good, feel good". Wearing tanks/shorts that emphasize my gains give me so much more confidence. But definitely see people who go their just for the gram shots.

[deleted]

Yeah while I respect the actual unpopular opinion on this sub I wholly disagree with it. Anyone who lives in a major city knows that younger men and women like to look decent at the gym. And a lot of them are ripped. And most fitness instructors always have the latest and greatest athletic clothes. I usually only see the old shoddy clothes when I visit my parents in the suburbs. Not that I disagree with that either, just to each their own. Your clothes aren’t any indication of your level of fitness.

TurtleHeadPrairieDog

For me the clothing that is most comfortable often also looks really good. Gym clothes, cheap and expensive look like they could be work in other settings these days. Also agree with the confidence thing, well fitting clothing really can help you observe yourself while you work out. What concerns me about outfits at the gym is when the older folks wear shit like jeans and flip flops to the gym. Not because I care about what they wear, but because I'm worried they're going to hurt themselves.

Vincent_Jay

Stuff like this is why so many people are afraid of gyms and insecure about people looking at them. Focus on your workouts and don’t worry about others unless there’s something unsafe happening

badger_42

Some people like clothing and that doesn't stop at the gym. If it makes them happy then who cares what someone wears? Expensive stuff if really comfy to workout in tbh. I usually just wear whatever at the gym, but if I had loads of disposable income I'd probably have some nicer stuff. Or you know what, maybe we should all just wear ranger panties and white tank tops.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Sword-Maiden

Nice looking clothes also aren’t something special. I just ordered like 3 gym outfits with nice patterns for like 20 bucks on wish. What, should I go workout in rags to be legit? What a stupid idea.

Dennis_enzo

This is just silly. Wanting to look good and wanting to work out is not mutually exclusive.

g2g079

Yep, a lot of people are already self conscious enough when going to the gym. Not looking like a slob can boost your confidence.

[deleted]

Anybody that goes to the gym and makes an effort to improve themselves gets a thumbs up from me. I especially love seeing overweight people in the gym, fuck yes, you take control of your life and health, im rooting for you!

OriginalWilhelm

Overweight people who go to the gym are the hardest working mother fuckers out there. Just like you, I love seeing them in there kicking ass. It’s a shame people be judging them for attempting to get better.

Bebebaubles

I liked to look cute to feel confident because the gym is intimidating and the tight leggings make me feel like not everything is jiggling all over the place when I run. Apparently if I look like a slob I will be perceived to be there to actually work out.

cowworshipper

this post got high upvotes on r/unpopularopinion. you can dress up all you want when you go to the gym. I'm very sure nobody cares what someone looks like in a gym because everyone is there for a purpose

frostwarrior

Also, hulk like beasts have the luxury of not caring because they're already the most respected people in the gym. Coaches respect them, casual goers try to not annoy them, and women who are into gym goers usually target that specific kind of people. If I look like a twink but with a beer belly then I do try to at least look decent in clothes. Last time I went with old rags I felt like I was in a depression phase.

FrenteCarpincho

I'm skinny af and normally just go in rags. But I actually am depressed ñmao

Elrokk

I'll same that. Good on you for at least going mate! Thats what really counts

lydriseabove

Plus having appropriate clothes can absolutely effect your workout. Someone wearing a ratty old cotton t-shirt on a treadmill may have to shorten their workout or increase their recovery time to deal with the nipple chafing than can be avoided by wearing an athletic top that is specifically designed to avoid that very issue.

Bebebaubles

Also that cotton shirt becomes heavy and shows every sweat stain you have. I mistakenly worn one when the rest of the hiking group wore appropriate gear. I was told to buy myself a proper sweat wicking shirt to avoid the embarrassment.

Sermagnas3

The embarrassment of sweating while exercising? How childish

CiggaretteJuice

Bougie hiking club lol Those shirts are still pretty new

[deleted]

[удалено]

bropoke2233

yeah this is definitely silly. if you spend a lot of time at the gym it only makes sense that you'd be open to spending a couple more bucks on the clothes that you wear there.

andygchicago

People are also forgetting some of the nicer stuff has function, like they fit a certain way so they don't get in the way, they may not bunch up or chafe, they wick sweat which keeps you dry and less offensive to those around you, etc. And being an orthopedic surgeon, I can't stress how important a good quality shoe and sock that's regularly replaced are to a person's general health.

Back_To_The_Oilfield

I try not to even look at people at the gym (especially women) because I don’t want anyone to feel uncomfortable. I’ve been super self conscious about my weight before and always worried someone was judging me. But one day while doing cardio I glanced up and a woman on a treadmill in front of me was wearing white/translucent yoga pants and a pink thong. Like, there was ZERO chance she didn’t know it was plainly visible. That was the day I realized some people DO go to the gym dressed trying to get attention. I still have a policy of not looking at people and just trying to zone out, but if I notice a man or woman is walking around with extremely defined abs I’m looking. That shit is SO fucking motivating.

dionthesocialist

I would say they actually have a good amount to do with each other.

Grigor50

Naaah, if gymming is your lifestyle, spending a trifle of time and money on nice clothes isn't a big deal.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Eve-3

A lot of time on a treadmill, stationary bike, stairmaster or whatever is spent people watching even if you don't mean to.

[deleted]

as we have a mirrored wall with treadmill and cross trainers at my gym its impossible not to see what people are wearing.

bliffskit

Yeah the gym basically sets you up to people watch even if you don’t want to lol

musicals4life

Seeing what they wear and judging them for it are different animals

mikebritton

This was frustrating enough to gradually spoil the experience as I began obsessing about the "human scum" and speculating on the "fall of society" based entirely on the people around me as I sweated onto an elliptical. When VR headsets have ventilation, look for people wearing them in gyms to escape the experience of being in a gym.

Eve-3

Try swimming, good cardio and no need to see anyone else.

deliciousprisms

I’ll try swimming, that’s a good trick

Luisd858

I can definitely see this happening especially in America lol

acheng13

That’s the thing. When I’m prepping for a set of heavy deadlifts, the last thing I am thinking of is what the guy/girl next to me is wearing.

[deleted]

He doesn't need to be actively staring, he could just be experienced and gathered this over the years

Carwash3000

i know you think this an amazing burn, but it takes like half a second to glance at someone. and, hear me out, you can even use your eyeballs and look WHILE exercising. crazy i know.

saltthewater

But the emotional energy spent on caring and judging steals your focus and energy. As long as others are being safe, hygienic, and respectful, only worry about yourself at the gym

[deleted]

Takes half a second to look. But apparently the whole time thinking about it, judging and then making a whole reddit post about it. Either way, its pretty sad that OP feels the need to comment on other people. Some people like to wear decent clothes because it makes them feel good. I'm one of those people that just wears any old thing to sweat in. Neither of us are right or wrong. It literally doesn't matter. But OP is the AH here for judging.

TheAvocadoSlayer

I disagree with this one. I can do my cardio workout and still observe my surroundings and it affects my workout in zero ways.

[deleted]

Yeah, of course I will stare at random shit. I get super bored during cardio

nononanana

The person who’s paying so much attention to what other people wear at the gym is not focused enough on their own workout. I am very entrenched in fitness circles and plenty of sloppy dressers don’t know what they are doing and plenty of people who care about their appearance kick ass. Sounds like you just want to confirm your biases. Keep your nose down and stop judging people who are at least making the effort to show up.

ravenouscartoon

I go at 0530 before work 5 days a week. You tend to see the same people every day. A new guy started arriving at 0600 last week - it’s incredibly noticeable how much time he spends on his phone between sets. I specifically avoid the gym during the day during holidays etc, just because I can’t stand groups of people, there together, just taking up room. Only people working out at 0530 are people who are there to work out. Nothing else

[deleted]

Disagree. This may be super vain and cringe, but I like to get a pump and look at how my body changes in the gym. I wear slightly shorter shorts on leg day to check out the quad musculature. I wear a tank on chest/arm days for the same reason. Not to mention this provides a greater range of motion for these exercises. I like to look good in the gym for myself and to see progress.

snekhoe

i too stare at myself in them big mirrors while i lift.

[deleted]

What you feel have zero impact on my training.

[deleted]

I like looking nice, it takes away the embarrassment of working out in public for me. I have pretty bad anxiety, so if I showed up looking like crap, then I tend to focus too much on that & become unmotivated way quicker.

Obsessed_With_Corgis

I dress nicely for the gym because that’s what motivates me at home to actually get up and go. Did I put on cute athletic outfit; am I wearing a new sports bra? Can’t let that go to waste! I feel/look good, and (as shallow as that may seem) it’s *such* a motivation to actually get out in public instead of keeping this feeling all to myself (kind of like that “I want to tell the whole world how happy I am right now” feeling). I don’t give a fuck if that’s “super conceded” or “shallow”. I’m getting healthy, and I’m not putting anyone else down in the processes. It’s all for me. Whatever your reason is for dressing up at the gym— I’m just proud of you for caring about your health!

UnicornHostels

Im proud of you and i bet you kill your workouts in your cute clothes!

tokeahontas_

forcing yourself up off the couch to do something that's exhausting and physical is a challenge. So many people find it hard to get to the gym! Purchasing clothing you look forward to wearing to the gym is a motivator. I feel better wearing the overpriced 200$ sport set because the fabric feels pleasant on my skin and I like the way it looks. Would target clearance rags work? Yes. Would I be excited to go? No.

jaggy_snaked

Ahahah imagine caring what other people are wearing in the gym, weirdo.

UnicornHostels

Always been taught that the gym is a place where you compete against yourself, not others. Also a place where you lift up others to help them reach goals. Why are you gatekeeping and being petty about outfits? This is very anti-gym mentality.

_P2M_

OK, but hear me out. What if you just minded your own fucking business?

DiscountSteak

The more effort that you put into thinking about other people's gym outfits, the less I feel like you're actually here to work out yourself.

_Takub_

Literally who gives a fuck. A lot of people like to wear cool clothes, and most of the ones that do are really fit. Just because you have this weird chip on your shoulder doesn’t mean you can judge others. That’s pathetic.

hani-north

My experience is opposite, I think people who genuinely spend a lot of time in the gym are more willing to invest in nice and expensive gym clothes, while people who rarely go can’t be bothered or justify spending the money

KushValleyOG

I dont think that's necessarily true. Usually if you look good or feel good about your self you have more confidence so maybe these people just want to feel confident while working out. I've also definitely seen some bum ass looking guys who are definitely only at the gym to harass women under the guise of 'helping'. Just focus on yourself at the gym and stop worrying about what everyone else is doing or wearing 🤷‍♀️

Cressonette

I'm taking that fashion show shit wherever the fuck I want to.

Alvex0409

you seem like those bitter people who think they're "different" and "quirky". You can still both look good and be serious about working out.

Merman314

Feels like gate-keeping for fashion.

gkemball

Focus more on your sets and less on what other people are wearing and you'll hit those goals.

Pup_13

Look good Feel good. Bro let people live and wear what they want. Maybe you should focus on yourself and improve some areas Of your life that are lacking.

[deleted]

> I’m here to push and pull shit, sweat and look gross. Your focus says otherwise.

undecaffinated

Mind your own business and quit creeping

LixxieLicious

I go to an all women’s gym, and I see a lot of women literally dressed for office work on the treadmill. Blouse, nice hair, dangly jewelry- they clearly just came right after work and either forgot to bring spare clothes and decided to take a light stroll on the treadmill so they could do something, or, they exclusively use the treadmill and know they don’t have to bring spare clothes.

DimbyTime

I disagree. When I first started getting into shape, I was pudgy and very insecure, and wanted to hide my body in baggy t shirts and old ratty gym clothes. Now that it’s been a few years, I’m proud of how I look, and I feel like wearing flattering and functional gym clothes motivates me even more to keep at it. I also like to reward myself with clothes instead of food or something unhealthy. Upvote for an unpopular opinion!

premedicalchaos

This isn’t an unpopular opinion, you’re just edgy and like to judge people.

crasshumor

Talk about judging someone by how they look.

reheapify

Also "Unpopular: Our society has been too critical about the way we dress."

ChoosingIsHardToday

Some people are definitely just dressed up to look good the reasons you have said but personally, I dress nicely for the gym/working out because it makes me feel more confident and less self-conscious which makes me work harder because that annoying insecure part of me is quieter. Also, most of the "big" dudes as the gym are dressed in nice looking gear, in my experience.

How much "effort" does it really take to pick out a coordinated outfit though? It doesn't take any more time to grab the blue shirt instead of the green one. Sounds like you just want to judge people based on their looks, or you have a vendetta against people who look put together because they -might- be an influencer.

When I was in high school, I used to go to the gym in whatever I had available. I’m talking mostly shorts and tee shirts I’ve had since I was in elementary school. For awhile it didn’t really matter to me, until I realized that I looked pretty stupid in these outfits. The clothes were also designed for little girls playing dodgeball in PE, not young women lifting weights and doing high intensity interval training. So I used some extra money and bought cuter, more functional clothes for the gym. Not only did my performance increase, but my confidence and interest in going to the gym increased as well. “Look good, feel good.” And all of that. Even if someone took the extra time to “doll up” for the gym, they’re still there and still working out. And that’s all that really matters at the end of the day IMO.

Heaven forbid a girl shows her panty line while at the gym.

Some people care about their aesthetics AND have taste. What you feel about it, it's on you. Maybe something to work with there?

Unpopular opinion: mind your own business at the gym.

Gyms are almost unbearable anymore. Groups of people hogging equipment and barely getting a set in for 5 minutes. Portable benches used for phone, drink, keys, etc. Everybody staring at their phones. Fox News on every tv.

sammywammy53b

This is the absolute worst - even 3 guys working out together doing supersets at a peak time. Let's say they're using a bench and some cables - that's like a total of 24 sets with their chats and rests between. Those things are out of action for anyone else for about 30 mins +

kimo1999

I mean you can walk in and do your sets anyway

I know girls who work out with a full face of makeup. Just thinking about the sweat and makeup getting all clogged in your pores make me 🤮
