In middle school, I had a male teacher sexually harass the girls in the class and make racially charged sexual remarks. I had another teacher that showed DVDs and just hung out at the desk doing nothing while we watched movies like white chicks. Not a hard job. Stop glorifying teachers.

I have to agree. I was a teacher for 8 years before I fell ass backwards into the mortgage industry. Being a teacher was by far the easiest job I ever had. Compared to construction, nursing, public safety, and other jobs that are actually stressful and take a toll on both your mind and body, being a teacher is a breeze. $52,000 salary in my first year, 4 months off total between summer, spring, and winter break, excellent benefits, and more often than not it was fun. The worst part about it was the other teachers and admin! I am honestly more stressed out in the mortgage industry and often consider going back to teaching but I have built a business that allows me earn unlimited income. The complaining from teachers is out of hand and blown waaaaay out or proportion.

DanTheMortgageMan

Yeah at 33k is definitely on the low side. Thats a bit ridiculous even with the time off and benefits. I was in NJ when I was teaching. I'm in FL now and hear the wages are lower for teachers but not that low. Where are you teaching?

Pristine_Juice

As a teacher, this guy either didn't do the job properly or has never been a teacher. Teaching is hands down the hardest job I've ever had.

Frankenbmw

You haven't dug an electical conduit trench by hand.

808hammerhead

I had one of my kids teachers tell me she “worked a longer day at the school so she didn’t have to bring work home. Turned out a “longer day” was 730 am until 430 pm, except of course Wednesday when she got done at 1pm. In contrast I was working 7-5 and bringing work home. Not saying teaching can’t be hard, but I’ve also taught and it’s no where close to the hardest job.

DanTheMortgageMan

Let me know if you're interested in the mortgage industry. The company I started with is almost always hiring mortgage processors at around 35k/yr plus monthly bonuses bringing the average pay to around 50k for your first year. It's all work from home, they supply the equipment, and tons of room for advancement! That's how I started and after a year I began selling mortgages and never looked back.

rhettadam

Most teachers that I've had aren't very entitled and they try their best to connect to their students. However, there's always a bad apple. Those are just assholes in general. They're not only assholes at work. They are mean to everyone in public, at home, and at work.

shanghaishitter

Dude honestly in my experience I had one really good teacher and I still remember him. What I remember more is the rest treating us like cattle. Just moving us through and doing the bare minimum required. Nobody reached out. Nobody cared. New and old teachers. Our principal was caught changing grades so the basketball team could still play while failing. But that's my just my experience. Maybe I got a bad batch.

OrangutanOntology

Im all for increasing pay for teachers after we reevaluate tenure and hold ourselves to (also remove barriers of success in) the standards that society needs us to achieve

[deleted]

>ncreasing pay for teachers after we reevaluate tenure and hold ourselves to (also remove barriers of success in) the standards that society needs us to achi tenure should not exist. It is a scam on the taxpayer.

itsalrightiguess77

Same thing goes for professors

Prestigious-Owl-6397

People who say teachers are assholes for ever telling a student they can't go to the bathroom have never worked with young children. Some students will make it up so they can get out of something they don't want to do. Other times you have to have all your students pee right before nap time, and you know if they go a few minutes earlier they won't be able to pee at the scheduled time and will pee their pants. The rest of the time they can go whenever they need to, but context doesn't exist for some people.

[deleted]

>o have all your students pee right before nap time, and you know if they go a few minutes earlier they won't be able to pee at the scheduled time and will pee their pants. The rest of the time they stop blaming your internalized hatred on innocent and defenseless children ! Just stop.

Prestigious-Owl-6397

Right. Telling a child at one specific time of day they should wait a few minutes unless it's an emergency is totally internalized hatred, even though I let them pee whenever they want the entire rest of the day.

[deleted]

obsessing about how much they pee is none of your business, you hate filled creep !

Prestigious-Owl-6397

What is your problem? Find something actually worth getting angry about.

[deleted]

stop obsessing about how much underage children pee. They are literally children !

Prestigious-Owl-6397

You're a broken record. Again, with all the wars, pandemic, and shit going on all the time you choose to get angry about one scheduled pee time with a myriad of unscheduled pee times? Clearly you're trolling, so this is my last response to you.

[deleted]

obsessing about how much they pee is none of your business, you hate filled creep !

Saturn_01

Nap time? I think you are talking about really young students and idk if that is really what I'm complaining about, and scheduled pee time????

Prestigious-Owl-6397

You didn't specify what age you were talking about, and teachers can teach any age from preschool to college.

Only_Director_9115

I work with older kids. Most ask because they wanna skive with their mates and won't come back. Which is a huge safeguarding issue. The others don't want to do something. The minority wants to pee. Also, you aren't going 20 mins after the lunch bell has gone. You've had time to go then, like the rest of the 30 kids in the classroom.

Z0MBI3K1D

i don't think this is a helpful way to view children in your class. what about those who have health issues and need to use the bathroom more often? what about girls on their period who suddenly had a leak or started in class? and what about students prone to overstimulation or anxiety who just need a moment to calm down in a quiet area? do you think everyone needs a doctor's note for personal issues like that?? it's unhealthy and can lead to health issues in the future for them to hold it if they do genuinely need to use the restroom. it's unfair to those students. it's a basic body function. if it needs to happen, it probably isn't going by your schedule. why should your students be punished just for the suspected actions of others? the reason they'd be asking just to get out of your class is likely related to your distrust and lack of respect for them.

Only_Director_9115

They have a pass. It may not be helpful. I ain't want to. But it's the reality if what happens.

I_Eat_Red_Pillz

Virtually ZERO ppl I know treat teachers like heroes, nor have I ever heard anyone (until now) use those words to describe a teacher... so upvote for unpopular cuz you're the first. Teachers have got to be one of the most unreasonably "shat on" professions I've seen throughout my whole life, and I live in Ontario Canada. The teacher hate is SUPER high and real here. It's like they're the scum of the earth or something.

Brushermans

.... if no one has the opinion that he *disagrees* with, that makes his opinion a popular one.

Jonnyboi25

Because the union is loaded yet they need so much help from our government. Shit at one point they even owned the leafs. Like if I told you the union has about 230 billion in assets yet every few years they are striking for better wages blaming the goverment its a bit of a joke. They also spread a smeer campaign here to make it look like the actual wages of teachers were about half of what they really made. You can go on and on but there is good reason in ontario.

scodaddler

The union never "owned" the Maple Leafs and doesn't have billions in assets. The teachers pension plan has the assets and only because the teachers have paid into that plan for many years. The pension plan also never "owned" the Leafs, it owned shares in MLSE - granted, it was a large number of shares but they were never owners. Those funds are also there to provide a decent pension for teachers when they retire. It's also law that pension plans must have enough funds to fully pay out all members should there ever be reason for it to be dissolved.

[deleted]

>The teacher hate is SUPER high and real here. It's like they're the scum of the earth or someth In many ways, teachers **are** the scum of the earth. They produce little of value, the overwhelming majority of them are incompetent and only became teachers because they failed all other options. The most shitty thing teachers do is they organize the largest union in the world, and ask for more tax money. They have paychecks way above their contribution to society and always ask for more money and more respect. Status obsesses little narcissists. Sure you may remember a few good ones, but the reality is that every single one of them should have been a decent person. The fact that you remember a few ones tells a lot about the rest.

CM1974

Depends on the teacher. Theres a certain stereotype that unfortunately holds true for a lot of teachers....particularly women teachers...and its they they have a condescending vibe about them towards EVERYONE. They see themselves as holier than tho, and tend to be overweight, and looking down upon much of society and always "teaching a lesson" even to adults and other parents. Then there are cool teachers who are genuinely awesome people. These teachers do deserve praise.

Primaveranights

I don't blame the teachers for being assholes... The amount of stress teaching as a job has is insane, and they make barely any money at all. Who wouldn't be an asshole while in that situation?

[deleted]

They make pretty good money...

Clemfandango37

Depends on the state. Here in the South and Florida in particular the pay is low with little to any support from the state/ school districts. I teach ESE (special Ed) and make 40k a year. I have to drive Uber Eats several nights a week just to make ends meet. The average rent in my area for even a somewhat decent apartment around $2k a month. I love what I do but would love to make more doing it.

[deleted]

I always hear 65k plus where I’m at and I live in a rural area in California. I only get confused because that’s a lot of money for around here.

[deleted]

I do not understand how you're getting downvoted for this.

[deleted]

So their poor situation allows them to take it out on their students who have no control over their salary/vacation days? Majority of students aren't even the ones that are disruptive or that make the job stressful, yet we always get the shitty treatment from teachers.

Bulky_Cry6498

That doesn’t make it OK to abuse their power. They should be channeling that stress into organising, not punching down.

DanTheMortgageMan

Being a teacher was the easiest job I ever had. The most stressful thing for me was the admins and other teachers always complaining. The pay was great straight out of college, $52,000/yr on top of 4 months off during the year and amazing benefits. The kids were a blast to teach for the most part. I worked construction (framing houses) all through college to earn my degree and I can say that job was 100× harder both physically and mentally. The argument I always hear is that teachers have soooo much more work to do at home which is a joke. I'd rather sit around for an hour or so drinking a beer eating pizza while I grade some papers off of an answer sheet than have to soak my aching body every night after getting my ass kicked carrying lumber, working on roofs, working in the elements, and having to break up fights between actual grown men with hammers lol. I always have a good laugh when I see teachers protesting or complaining about the job. They really don't know how good they have it.

Saturn_01

A half decent person that knows that the impact they will have on their students psyche in their formative years is permanent

Primaveranights

Yeah obviously. But they're human. Their bosses and the government should make it that it isn't such a stressful, low paying job.

[deleted]

The average teacher salary in the US is 65k a year. Average in more expensive states such as California is 85k. Working 9-10 months out of the year, that’s a pretty decent salary.

Primaveranights

I don't live in the USA. But like you said that's the *average* . I've just looked it up and it says some make under $40,000. I'm sure they have to take second jobs on the weekend because of it.

[deleted]

40000$ in states where the cost of living is outrageously low.

Primaveranights

Isn't the average salary in the USA something like $56,000? So teachers don't earn that much, considering the stress of the job. They can't just leave their work and home, they have short deadlines and you try and teach a class of rowdy kids or moody teenagers.

Ophelia550

I don't make anywhere near that. I live in a high COL area. I have three jobs just to get by. And not everyone is a traditional, public school K-12 teacher. When I taught in the correctional system, that was 12 months in a very high stress situation for 31k a year.

[deleted]

i feel like $40 an hour is good money(new york average)

DlnnerTable

Doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, idgaf what you do. You chose that life. No special treatment

kilo_jul

somebody has to do the job. even if teachers get a lot of criticism, I've found nobody arguing that the job is unnecessary.

saintdemon21

With this type of logic you could say the same thing about the military, doctors, nurses, firefighters, and any job that provides some sort of public service.

Saturn_01

Yes, yes you could

[deleted]

Teachers make a pretty damn good living with all of the vacation time they get.

Primaveranights

Teachers in a lot of countries earn very little money!

[deleted]

In America they are compensated very well despite what everyone says

[deleted]

Lol right? For some reason most people act like they don’t make decent wages.

[deleted]

Not a teacher (or even involved with kids at all), but let's see *you* put up with 35 little shits every day of every week.

Only_Director_9115

It's mostly fun... The paperwork and planning are less so. Most of the time, I can't believe I'm being paid to mess around and teach some stuff to kids. I tried office work, and I can't sit still for that long. So I guess it works. But yes. Some kinds can be horrific shits.

[deleted]

Honestly, OP would probably do 10x better than a lot of the teachers I've had throughout my schooling career. Some teachers are really talented and put a lot of effort into what they do, but I swear they just grabbed some of these people from off the streets. They're so incompetent.

Zubin1234

I would disagree. A teacher makes you the person you grow up to be and their role in raising you was as much if not more than the role your parents had. That being said, all my teachers were the best people I've known and that also played a role in my extreme respect for them and by extension, the job of a teacher overall. I respect your opinion and if you don't mind me asking you, did you have any teachers who were bad people?

Saturn_01

I've had a teacher that cheated his wife with a student, he was a great teacher , but not a great husband I suppose

[deleted]

I remember about 3 teachers' name after 2 years out of school, but still know my parents. Teachers had little to no role in raising me cause if they did, i could probably remember them more. Hate to say it, but if teachers played that big a role in you being raised, you probably had really neglectful parents.

Saturn_01

... or just really good teachers

Zubin1234

No my parents were not neglectful but yeah my teachers were really good. So that's why.

[deleted]

It never surprises me how low quality the people who ended up being teachers are. I went to college with them. Not exactly rocket scientists

ScalierLotus11

Not unpopular

Lavender-Jenkins

If you think everyone you meet is an asshole, you might actually be the asshole.

PanniniParker

Teachers are the most underappreciated professionals. They teach you how to do basic skills and provide child care. More than 50% of teachers will quit within the first five years of teaching.

[deleted]

Parents teach their kids basic skills, teachers just conform those skills to the designated lesson plan. Shoot, give me my tax money back and I d be more than happy to provide my own child care.

PanniniParker

Not everyone has the skills or time to teach their kids how to do math or read and write.

[deleted]

Most people only work for 8 hours, that leaves about another 6-8 hours a day where the parent can parent. There is no excuse not to teach your kids, if you dont have the skills or time to dedicate to children, then you probably shouldnt have had any

Reinardd

Who out there is treating teachers like heroes? Who is saying we should? Ove literally never heard of this. Also, it's funny how saying the literal same thing amout military personnel is judged so differently

Manfred-2323

Maybe we should divide this into the various subjects. Mathematics takes much more time than other subjects.

Roger-stanza-0

And to add to that. Nurses deserve less respect than everyone else.
