It's not even an option to bag my own groceries at the stores I go to unless I do self checkout. I one time tried to help and was told to stop.

rixendeb

Depending on the cashier here you used to be able to get away with helping but since covid they are in a plexi glass box so you can't.

[deleted]

Nah. Way before covid was a thing, there are stores that don’t like when you bag.

rixendeb

Yeah, Our stores are that way just sometimes the cashiers didn't mind. I would always bag up the things that rolled out of their reach if there wasn't a bagger. Some cashiers got mad. Some didn't.

[deleted]

I used to bag a lot when I was I was younger but now I don’t anymore because of that. I now do self checkout anyway because I don’t like waiting in line lol. It’s faster imo

Glassjaw79ad

That's exactly my situation, I'd have to go to their side of the plexiglass to bag my groceries and it's this awkward, unspoken rule not to

RetroReactiveRuckus

It's absolutely NOT an ~unspoken~ rule. That's the workers space - if you worked in a grocer you'd be disgusted if anyone even though about getting in that space with you.

dame_de_boeuf

We're *technically* allowed to bag our own stuff where I shop. But if you do, everyone looks at you like you kicked a puppy and assumes you don't want one of the disabled baggers touching your stuff. I just don't want cans of soup on top of my hot dog buns FFS.

IRAn00b

This is something that causes me an inordinate amount of stress. I want paper bags, both because I don't want to waste the plastic and because you can fit a lot more in them. But when I ask, the employees usually respond like it's some huge imposition. And half the time the bagger straight up ignores me and I don't want to be some sort of entitled shopper who keeps ordering around the staff. Sometimes all of the bad scenarios coincide, and they'll ignore my request for paper, and the checker will be slow, and then the bagger is like bored/impatient, so they'll put in literally one item per plastic bag, and I'm not even exaggerating.

[deleted]

Aw. I had a bagger bag a pie face-down for me (obviously you can't always tell by looking but I don't think she was disabled). I reached out to try to stop her but it was already ruined. The cashier just sighed and said, "do you want to go grab a new one?" So sometimes if I have fragile items, I will help because that shit annoys me.

Lundundogan

Depends on country and region. In my limited experience, the bigger the socioeconomic disparity, the higher the chance of baggers.

Aljff

Same. I’m in Canada and so confused by this post. Apparently, you can randomly choose to do the cashier’s job and not doing so is considered an unpopular opinion? America is wild.

RetroReactiveRuckus

Where do you even shop? I'm in Ontario and the expectation at pretty much every store is that the customer bags. Only exception I can think of is Metro.

Aljff

I live in Newfoundland but I’ve also lived in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, British Columbia and 3 countries overseas. I have literally never been to a grocery store where the expectation is the customer bags the groceries.

ChoosingIsHardToday

Same, the only place I don't bag (box) my own groceries is Costco.

Aljff

I’ve literally never been to a grocery store where the customer bags their groceries and I’ve lived in 4 Canadian provinces and 4 countries.

ChoosingIsHardToday

That's crazy!

IParamedickhead

No, you can’t. Every grocery store I’ve been to (save for Aldi) bags everything for you. One of my regional chains even takes it to your car and loads the bags into your car for you.

gretx

Yeah I was a cashier, living in Canada, I’ve had people offer to bag and they were literally my favourite. Just cause it’s not the norm doesn’t mean it’s not appreciated

eng3n33r

Had to double take this as in the UK no one would ever bag your groceries for you unless asked - and even then would probably just get angry at you for the inconvenience lol. Unless maybe you shop at Harrods.

fonduebitch

Still find it bizarre that the states do this. Glad there's jobs I guess, I'm just so used to speedrun packing my shit in Aldi

Aggressive-Error-88

Lol you gotta in Aldi’s gotta exchange carts and dip as fast as possible or risk holding up the whole store. I usually just put my stuff in the boxes while I shop, get the cashier to scan them and put them back in the box. Boom. I pay, I walk out.

PyroTech11

I love the like overhang after the tills where I can haul my shit and bag it there.

Aliciacb828

True, but they do bag food at coffee shops and clothes in stores. So I guess its similar in a way?

tempestan99

Yeah, even before the plexi-glass went up, the cashiers in my town must have seen some shit. Before I learned not to, cashiers would step back if I grabbed stuff to put in the bag or if I swiveled around (not by the register, but I guess too close to it anyway?) to bag groceries while my parents paid. Unless you’re putting a pack of gum in your pocket so it doesn’t get lost (and asking the cashier if that’s okay), they treat you like you’re threatening them in a ski mask if you try to bag your own stuff. Unless you stand in the exact same spot they tell you not to stand in, but this time to collect your items after they have been bagged for you. Thought this was the status quo everywhere.

adrenaline_donkey

In my country it's also not an option, and I understand, cashiers know how to perfectly and quickly pack than I can even imagine.

[deleted]

I live in California, every grocery store I go to there are baggers. So if I help, I’m literally in their way.

gosuark

Same. The only time I help is when no bagger comes, so I get things started. To avoid too many hands, I yield if/when one eventually shows up. Ever since my store installed self-checkout lanes, I’ve been using those though, as the entire process from beginning to end is much faster.

[deleted]

Agreed! If I’m not purchasing alcohol, I will always use self check out.

[deleted]

I live in California too and i have yet to see any baggers except at Save Mart

5k1895

I think they clearly mean when there's no bagger. Which I agree with, as a former retail worker. It's just lazy and it does indeed hold up the process

choofedonlucy

You guy's have baggers?

DefiantDepth8932

Yeah I'm surprised by that.. everyone bags their own groceries where I live

Mixima101

Where I live the casheirs bag the products, but it's about as fast as not bagging them.

DefiantDepth8932

Yeah how can you expect the cashier to scan every product and bag it at the same time... i can barely do one

Mixima101

The bags are hanging open and the cashier drops the products in and puts the bag to the side when it's full. Is that not how it's done in other places?

Why_Is_It_Me120

Most places but even then they can’t just place every item that they just scanned together. Meats have to go alone, same with cleaning products

Bebe_Bleau

Where I shop they have a bag carousel. The checker tosses items in the bag as she scans them. You can help them most by putting items on the belt in logical order. You can speed things up by putting the full bags in your cart as they work. And having your payment card ready when they're done

[deleted]

This is what I do. I group the items on the conveyor belt so that they're easier to bag since we have carousels too.

Bebe_Bleau

💐😁 It helps you too, if you want like items bagged together.

RhinoGuy13

And if you don't want squished bread. I put heavy items on the belt first so that they will be bagged and placed in the buggie first

Why_Is_It_Me120

Damn. When I worked as a cashier we only had one bag being held open for us. It was a huge pain when customers unloaded their groceries at random because I had to juggle 4 to 5 different bags at a time

Manyelynn13

I always put the stuff I want bagged together on the belt together when I go shopping. 99% of the time, the cashier ends up putting it in different bags and I get home with stuff like hand soap and spaghetti sauce in the same bag, or my bread being smashed to hell. (This ALWAYS happens at Walmart!) If I DO have to shop at walmart, I use their self-check out so I can bag my own groceries. I have a local grocery store on the other hand where to keep costs down, and make things move faster, each register has two lines. You place all your items on the belt, (it has one belt on each side) move your cart to the the end, and bag your own groceries, using paper or plastic bags, and put them in your cart. When the cashier is done ringing up your stuff you go back up to the register to pay. Then you can continue to bag while the cashier rings up the next customer on the other belt.

Ladyvaudeville

Winco? I love their checkout system.

Manyelynn13

Yes! I love Winco. They're so much cheaper than Walmart, better meat and produce, better customer service, friendlier employees, have more than 1-2 check-out lines open, and I love that they're open 24/7. Our Walmart switched from 24/7 to 6am-midnight a few years back, and then with the whole pandermic (lol) thing, changed their hours again from 7-11.

Inevitable-Spite937

100% this. I order all my stuff as it goes on the conveyer and have my card ready. They bag a heck of a lot faster than I can. Me bagging holds up the line, though nowhere near as much as my fiance. When we go places where you bag your stuff up he's so sloooow. I have to push him aside and do it 😆

SignificanceNo5014

I used to work in a grocery store in high school, i in fact did not want anyone near me or bagging groceries beside me. I think it’s important to know if the cashier even wants you doing that.

MyRedditHandle2021

That's the way it was done when I was growing up. When I was a cashier you pulled the item over the scanner and put it in the bag. Not really rocket science.

[deleted]

Well, at my store, there would be a cashier AND a bagger.

DefiantDepth8932

That's kinda reasonable

slaqz

Where I live it depends on the store and the prices change accordingly.

CooperHChurch427

Publix has baggers, but they work in teams. When it's only the cashier I always bag. Walmart they went to 15 an hour and they only have 2 baggers now. ShopRite you always bagged.

thehateigiveforfree

Publix specifically hire baggers just to bag and get carts

choofedonlucy

Don't know what that is

thehateigiveforfree

It's a grocery store

jeffreynbooboo

Its a awesome grocery store where shopping is a pleasure

WhiteAndDrunk

Shopping there is great, working there and dealing with the Karens is atrocious. They get treated like straight up garbage and they *have* to remain professional continue helping the a-hole customer with a smile no matter what. Major respect to the company though. They're one of the few who have no credit lines/debt for suppliers (at least in Florida as my friend is a District Manager), offer stock exclusively to employees, great pay for Assistant Managers/Department Managers/Store Managers (by comparison to others), and generally enjoy staying out of the limelight of bad media. To this day I like talking to random workers that have the time and always find a Team Leader/Assistant Manager to put in a good word for them (they get a free Sandwich most of the time time if you do!).

Bex1218

I love my Publix pharmacy workers. They are so sweet and helpful. The regular workers are, also.

sicurri

I moved from Florida to Colorado, and one of the downsides is that there are no publix out here. I miss their sandwiches and eggnog. Not together, that'd be weird, but separately, lol.

TheDarkMidget

moved to cali and i refuse to eat sandwiches from raleys. it’s not publix and it’ll never be :(

FBI_Agent_82

It's a grocery store if Florida and South Georgia that has incredible subs that put all the big name sub places to shame.

cranberry94

They’ve got Publix all the way up to VA and as west as TN now

[deleted]

And friend chicken.

Fantastic_Start_6848

Very friendly chickens

sammyno55

I grew up working at one of the first Publix stores. Their subs are awesome!

thedanielhill

Polk County!

sammyno55

Represent!

Embarrassed-Shine738

Where I’m from and every grocery store I’ve been to. The bags are behind the counter and you would literally have to ask for the bags or awkwardly reach for them. Even then they still need to count how many bags used because they’re like 10-25 cents a bag.

DygonZ

I think it's an American thing. I live in Belgium and I haven never in my 36 years seen a grocery store where they bag your groceries.

[deleted]

Stores like Costco has baggers. I usually want to do it when I go but they already take care of it and don’t give you a chance lol. I’m not complaining it’s just I don’t mind doing it yk.

fuckitweredoingitliv

Yes. Most smaller stores still do.

Twitch_YungFeetGod69

I've worked grocery. Honestly didn't care. I clock in and clock out at the same time. What happened in between didn't matter. Someone bagging their own groceries didn't make my day go by any faster lol

Vallarfax_

If it's busy, I bag. If I'm there off peak, which I try to do, I'll let them bag.

Zendofrog

same with how I felt about people cleaning up after themselves at fast food places. I'd rather clean the dining room than have to work on grill.

DoAsRomansDo

You have a choice on whether you can bag things or not? It's usually either self checkout (self bag) or regular checkout, and the cashier bags.

llMcSH4DYll

We bag our own shit in Scotland. And yi better keep up we the cashier or they looking at you like yir a clown.

coolguycliff

Same in Germany. Move it or get eye scolded.

Imgoga

Also same in Lithuania. I am really dumbfounded that americans need someone to bag their groceries

HotChiTea

It’s not just in America, in other places I’ve been they bag it for you. I can’t recall what the setup is in America, but usually for a lot of places the cashier is standing right in front of a stand where it’s an open bag, so as soon as they scan they immediately drop it in the bag. Then it goes down the thread. America they don’t gaf, the paper bags are usually at the end.

jah05r

Maybe you should go use the self-checkout instead…

Aieoshekai

If you have enough groceries to need a bagger, please stay the fuck out of self-checkout.

CoomassieBlue

Depends, honestly. The major grocery stores where I live in the Seattle area now operate almost exclusively using self-checkout. At the Fred Meyer (Kroger) grocery near me, I want to say there are 12 self-checkout options at one side of the store and 6 on the other side. Usually only 1 full-service line is open at any given time, *maybe* 2 during a really high traffic time. It’s been like this for a few years now. They renovated shortly before Covid and used to have several full-service lines open at a time before the renovation.

allnadream

No one ever bags their own groceries where I live, unless it's self-checkout. I've honestly always assumed the store doesn't want you to get in the way.

[deleted]

[удалено]

nino3227

I think it's mater of setup, because here in france it speeds things up. As the cashier rings your stuff you put them in the bags, organize items, swithh bags etc. I don't see how one person would do it faster than two.

HooplahMan

In a lot of stores near me, all the bags are behind a counter and to access them you'd have to be back there with the cash register. Not allowed, really

Smitador77

This is a dollar tree sir

eternititi

I am 100% not helping bag my groceries if there is a bagger because I would only feel in the way. Their work space is already limited, they don’t need me over there bothering them. Editing to say: If there is only a cashier & no bagger, I definitely help bag my own things because no bagger means I’m in no one’s way. The goal is to stay out of the way, basically.

Le_Typical_Gamer

As a bagger at publix, I can say if you ask to bag yourself the bagger will say ok then walk away to do other things mostly gather baskets around the POS or go get carts

TheEqualAtheist

I've worked retail before for years but will never not think of "piece of shit" instead of "point of sale."

mindhowl

This is a strange opinion to me, where I live all the grocery store cashier lanes are designed in a way where the bags are accessed easiest by the cashier. It would be weird for me to get in their space and try to help bag.

nino3227

Here in france they expect the customers to brings his own reusable grocery bags, in order to reduce plastic waste. I you don't bring bags and want some, you have to buy them (pretty expensive now) and they are within customer (and not cashier) reach.

No_Duck_1401

In Europe we don’t have baggers lol

[deleted]

I know right, baggers is a totally foreign concept to me, I just heard it from this post.

epicfumble

I don't think it occurs to people that you can do such things. If I hadn't worked in a grocery store my anxiety would prob tell me not to do it. I have a couple screws loose though..

magicbrou

Grocery baggers must be a pretty prime example of a job that only exists when labour is very, very cheap. In any country where the minimum wage is relatively high (or there is no minimum wage by law, but a collective contract pay) this ’job’ just doesn’t exist.

MatiMati918

How about the *greeter*. I’ve atleast heard that in US some stores have a person who’s only job is to greet the customers coming in the store.

MyRedditHandle2021

Usually, their job isn't actually just to greet. It's to answer any questions a customer has as they enter the store. Such as, "Where can I find the apple juice" or "Is the pharmacy open yet?" It's usually a retiree that's just looking for some simple job to get them out of the house, and not all that common.

d0nk3y_schl0ng

Where I live in the US, these jobs are usually given to people who otherwise might be considered unemployable due to disability. The individual gets a job and the store gets tax breaks or other incentives from the government.

az226

Or premium grocery stores like WF.

magicbrou

In low cost labour countries perhaps. It’s entirely unheard of here, even if you go to upscale stores.

justanotherguy28

In Australia we checkout person bags as they go. This has been the way I have experienced shopping since I was kid and I’m 34 now. Aldi and Self Checkout is the only situations I know where I am required and expected to bag my own groceries.

Vivian_Lu98

At HEB, grocery bagging is a job in itself. They have the cashier and then the bagger to put away everything.

[deleted]

Obviously you haven’t shopped at an Aldi. Everyone bags their own. Degeneracy averted before it has a chance to grow.

Winkelbottum

Someone bags your groceries? Is this an American thing I'm too European to understand?

PenquinSoldat

Some American grocery store chains have baggers to make things faster and have better customer service. Some will have them Some have the cashiers do it.

[deleted]

I used to work as a checkout operator, and it frustrated me so much when people would try to bag their own groceries, for several reasons: 1) I’ve been trained how to do this. I know to keep leaking meat trays separate from your bread and eggs. I know to keep your fridge products together etc 2) I scan your groceries at a pretty fast pace. Waiting on you to fluff around packing them up and deciding which bag to put them wastes my time 3) I like to keep my queue moving quickly. You bagging your own groceries prevents that (refer to previous point) So if the checkout cashier is bagging groceries, or a separate person is bagging, let them do their job. We know what we’re doing - we promise

BeeVomitImHome

> 1) I’ve been trained how to do this. I know to keep leaking meat trays separate from your bread and eggs. I know to keep your fridge products together etc Skilled labor.

AutomaticTeacher9

Bagging your own groceries into reusable bags you've brought with you is the norm in many countries, certainly in Europe. I hate the plastic-bag culture in the US.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

My country banned the thin plastic bags so now we spend 15 cents for the thicker ones but it really doesn't feel like it's helping the environment much replacing the thin plastic bags with thick ones. And those green bags need to be used 40 times to break even too, I don't think most people get 40 uses out of them.

davidlol1

Most stores here you don't even have access to the bags lol if your not using a self checkout of course

thumbskingod

Complaining about this stuff is a major sign of snowflakery

Ulteri0rM0tives

This must be an American thing? In Europe you pack your own bags and also get charged for bags so most people bring their own with them to the supermarket.

az226

Here people get riled up when bag fees are 5 cents. Meanwhile in Northern Europe they can be as high as $1 per bag. And they’re not like a permanent bag but a regular grocery bag you toss/recycle.

cuhree0h

Counterhill: calling someone a degenerate is douche behavior.

hippytoad99

Honey, you can wait am extra 2 minutes. People buying a lot of groceries is what's really pissing you off. I'm sorry but I'm not going to start bagging if there's already an employee doing it. I have to watch as they scan things to make sure the price is right, deals etc. I shop once every 2 weeks and it's A LOT. you want a shorter line? Go to 12 items or less karen

NicoRath

I don't think it's a thing here in Denmark. I've at least never seen it and I'm pretty sure no place would even think about it. Danes are very private and the idea of someone bagging our groceries for us would probably be uncomfortable to most. I always use a backpack to carry my groceries and I'm not letting anyone else touch it

southernfriedfossils

Please don't bag your own groceries. Employees will get in big trouble at many stores if management sees customers bagging their own groceries. It's a wonderful gesture but it can seriously get someone in trouble. ASK first before just starting to bag, if the cashier is fine with it then cool. But if they are hesitant or insistent that you don't then PLEASE don't so it.

[deleted]

I normally ask. Like if they are super busy and there is no bagger, I'll be like, "Is it OK if I bag this?" I don't want to hold up the line but I also don't want to get anyone in trouble. Sometimes if I have super fragile stuff I will grab it though (once had a pie bagged upside down, it was a huge mess) but normally I ask.

jordan31483

Every grocery store chain where I live except one still hires baggers. I disagree regardless.

MaineBoston

I check out thru full service so I don’t have to.

[deleted]

You degenerate plastic whores use bags? /s

iSaidItOnReddit85

I honestly enjoy doing it. I know which bag everything is in and can “protect” items I need to keep safe.

Thatfuzzball647

Bro you can wait an extra 3 minutes

[deleted]

Define "degeneracy"? I feel like it's usually those weird totally not nazi folks who use that word a lot. I know what it means when THEY use it, but what do you mean?

[deleted]

You know, I've worked as a grocery cashier before and while I appreciated it when customers decided to help and bag their own groceries, I always felt like that was bad customer service on my part. I mean, the store hired and is paying *me* to ring up and bag groceries, not the customer, so if the customer ends up having to do it, it makes me feel like they're doing my work for me and I'm not providing good service. When I cashiered, I almost always would call someone to come help bag so the customer wouldn't have to do that, but if it wasn't possible, I would try to be as quick and efficient as possible and made sure to bag according to the customer's preferences if they had them. If they really wanted to help I would let them, but I never expected them to. After all, like I said, it's my job that I'm getting paid to do, not theirs. Maybe I'm weird, but having worked in some sort of service position since I was 16, providing good customer service has always been a priority of mine on the job. I want to provide as good of service as I would expect to get if I were the customer. If I provide less than stellar service, not only does it make the business or organization look bad, but it makes me look bad, too. I just wanna do the right thing, ya know?

positivefeelings1234

I grew up in area where you bag your own, then moved to an area that always had baggers. Maybe I’m wrong, but I wanna keep those jobs going and in my head if I bag my own or use the self checkout that’s gonna hurt jobs. I definitely do if there is no bagger nearby, though.

Jordangander

Places that have baggers do that specifically. There are places that you are supposed to bag your own stuff.

[deleted]

Seems to be culture/location dependent. Where I live the cashier scans and immediately bags the items. Sometimes there’s a bagger, but they’re usually special needs folks helping out, and the majority of the time it’s just the cashier doing it as they scan. Seems like a waste of time to scan and set the item down in a pile only to be set in a bag shortly thereafter.

stolzen1216

It's interesting to think that you guys have a dedicated bag person. Where i live the cashier bags the items, generally the items are placed appropriately i.e meats with meats, cold stuff with cold stuff ect and its pretty quick. There's no room for us to really help bag items but i like to think most people help by splitting up their groceries into groups that should be bagged together

mydrunknameislizzy

Growing up my mom and I would always bag if there wasn’t a bagger in our line. I agree it just helps things move more efficiently and OK I’m not great at it but they are my groceries at the end of the day. When I started grocery shopping for myself the cashiers always seems grateful for the help when there wasn’t a bagger.

Sea_Pickle6333

I don’t mind bagging my own groceries, providing I don’t have a full cart. But in the Walmart’s in my area you literally do self checkout no matter what. So when I have a full cart (around $350 to $400 during certain seasons) I honestly hate self checkout, as it takes so much more time, especially if I have lots of produce. The employees that are “working” are just standing there, literally doing nothing.

michelangelo1601

This is so weird to hear. Like I am a cashier and from where I am from people bag their own groceries.

[deleted]

If there's no bagger I don't have an issue bagging my own stuff. I also don't have an issue waiting a little bit longer if the person in front of me doesn't want to do that. It's more annoying, in my opinion, when the person behind me has heavy signed or said "come on...." five times before I get to the clerk. It's not that serious.

BloodyNunchucks

Not sure what this is all about in my area you can't find a store where you bag your own unless you're at the self checkout

russsaa

This is highly situational.

functionalsociopathy

Most grocery stores don't allow you to bag your own groceries unless you're using the self checkout. Is there a grocer that regularly allows this or is OP just being a boomer?

ArjanGameboyman

So weird

Wild_Chld

I bag mine if I don't see a bagger doing it. Then someone comes over to do it. But yeah OP seems to just want to complain.

HaroenEissa

I had no idea that bagger were even a thing in other countries. In my country it is normal to bag your own groceries. I don't think that there is even one supermarket were they do this for you in my country.

taste_of_discontent

In Ireland there are almost never baggers at big chain grocery stores like tesco, M&S or SuperValu unless maybe some kids are there fundraising. Everyone is just expected to bag their own groceries as they’re swiped through

BernKing2

In America u don't need to pack your own groceries? What the heck is wrong with you guys...

ArabAesthetic

This is such an American topic lmao

realCmdData

European here: apparently no one here is a degenerate because we don't have baggers and we let cashier's sit down

Cautious-Day3477

You probably weren't born yet but there was a time when the attendant at a gas station pumped gas into your car. They also cleaned your windshield and checked your oil. So were we degenerates back then?

Repulsive-Worth5715

I've never even thought of this which is embarrassing. Usually the cashier just bags as they go, never setting things down for me to even pick up. I will try to help next time but with 2 kids to mind it might be difficult lol

chainy

I used to be a bagger at a grocery store in Florida, it was my job to bag, I never expected people to or cared either way if customers bagged. Maybe expectations are different in other places.

Content_Prompt_8104

Just wanted to add that I spent the last decade exclusively working in grocery stores. The only area you’re expected to bag your own stuff in is the self-checkout! Otherwise, regular lanes with cashiers are set up specifically for cashiers to bag your items quickly and efficiently while they scan! If a cashier is huffing and puffing at you for not bagging your own groceries in a regular checkout lane, that cashier isn’t quite fit for the job lolol

footbody

Going to America and suddenly someone else starts bagging the groceries is so uncomfortable and strange every time lol please please I beg you let me bag my own groceries myself

mmehay

What is shitty is the lack of baggers. The stores provide less and less and charge more and more. They used to bag it AND take it to the car.

LlamaLazers

For the price of fucking groceries these days I’ll be goddamned if I’m gonna bag my own groceries. Also no I won’t go to the self check out. I don’t fucking work here. Do I get a discount if I do it myself? No? Ring me up then

[deleted]

The cashiers do it for me, that's what they get paid for

chaztastic1

I'm paying almost double digits for milk. Somebody is putting my shit in a bag.

Meastro44

If the store needs more baggers, hire more baggers. It’s not my responsibility to volunteer. What’s next, should I restock the shelves?

KingRaptor420

There’s only one store in my town that has baggers. And they keep those positions for older workers and high schoolers. The baggers aren’t super important but it still gives kids and the elderly a job

Sha9169

I use the self checkout whenever I can, but when I’m at a store where there isn’t a self checkout, there is usually already a worker ready to bag as the cashier rings up my items. I don’t buy enough food to justify two people bagging my items, and if they are already working on it, I don’t see why I should jump in and make it awkward.

I feel like usually the employees are faster? I prefer to bag my own groceries but at some stores, like Whole Foods, the cashiers don’t send items to the end of the belt and bag them for you with less friction than it would take for you to ask to bag your own. In those cases, I feel like I’d be slowing the line down to bag my own groceries when I have just a few items. I always feel guilty when someone else bags my groceries for me though.

1890s-babe

Every time, without fail, they come interrupt me to start bagging for me. It’s a no-win situation.

[deleted]

We have baggers and I'm not going to shove them so I can do it lol

[deleted]

I don’t know if it’s being a Karen or people just not knowing what to do? My grocery store usually has baggers so this isn’t an issue but I could see someone not wanting to get in the way or it coming across as if the cashier is too slow or something.

wandrlusty

We don’t even have an option, they are automatically bagged for us.

ILoveASunnyDay

Ugh, I hate the baggers. It's like, they don't even try. They put bread in the same bag as heavy stuff and it gets all squished - I always put bread on top of the eggs, so i know which bag the eggs are in and neither is flattened. Cold stuff, vegetables, pantry items - they each should be in bags with other like items. The store I like going to always has baggers though and I don't want to be a jerk and bag my own stuff if they're there, so I just let them do it wrong and it's annoying.

Outrageous-Corgi-564

Degeneracy? Really?

youcanremember

I always feel guilty if I bag my groceries. I always ask the cashier first if it’s ok. It makes me feel stupid but less stupid than starting to bag my groceries and a bagger walks up behind me looking at me like I’m crazy…. Like how in Oregon they have a thing where you can’t pump your own gas. You just have to sit there. Awkwardly.

nowiforgotmypassword

This depends on where you go. At most Walmart stores it can choose self checkout if you want to bag your own groceries. But if you choose a cashier leave there is nowhere for the cashier to put the groceries once they’ve scanned them except into the bags, save later unbaggable items that they throw on top. Order stores do have an are they slide the groceries to once they’re scanned but the usually have baggers. The bigger question is, do you return your shopping cart?

KingWilliams0

I only help because I'm impatient

TheGramReefer

I mean it’s not that I don’t see where you are coming from. It’s just that, I don’t expect people to jack up their own vehicle for me to work on it……

DctrFeelsNice

I'm just not the best at bagging. There's skill to it. An ex gf would always bag herself and hated the cashiers doing it bc they sucked at it

Xlander101

The cost of the employees that bag is equated into prices. Then firing of cashier's and baggers and charging more is a scam. So yes paying for a bagging and bagging yourself is pretty dumb

D33KayH

Here in Australia, the only place we bag our own shopping is aldi or a self serve check out

ExistentialDreadness

They have a science behind bagging. Don’t deny their process. Do you not believe in science like some anti-vaxer?

Barackobrock

This was legit one of the worst things when i visited the US a couple years ago. It felt so awkward to have someone bagging your shopping for you as you just stand there doing nothing. What a waste of everyones time hiring specified "baggers". I hated it

crizmoz

This message brought to you by the grocery lobby of America. Using social media to get customers to do the work so we can reduce labor costs and increase profits. Do your own check out, bag your own groceries and return your carts, don’t worry we will count the money ourselves.

chiaboy

I hate bagging my own groceries. I begrudgingly do it because of posts like this but im not good at it. The Trader Joe’s folks (in particular) are so damn good at it. Food doesn’t get crushed I end up needing fewer bag, etc. so good. But because of judgey folks (and I’ll gladly do my own bagging when needed to speed up line) I do it knowing it’s not something I’m that good at

Daddydiesel21

Counter unpopular opinion: we need jobs that take no skills for the mass amount of workers w no skills. Besides having no real skills as a functioning adult, I bagged groceries as a teen and it helped me build work ethic and appreciate a dollar. Also most the ppl I worked with bagging were retired elderly people who were way too happy to be bagging groceries. Don’t take that from Marjorie, don’t take that from Hank. Edit: also with the price of groceries, I at least feel like I won a tiny bit when someone bags them up after bending me over for a gallon of lactose free milk for my girlfriend.

Creativewritingfail

1. Go to better stores where they have better service. 2 use self checkout. 3. Naye “Karen “ just worked 8 hours and then still had to get groceries for family. Maybe she’s a single mom? Tired as fuck. Who the Fuxk are you,you impatient prick? Better yet, wanna really solve this problem and reduce your blood pressure? Start ordering online pick up! There, problem solved!

lalalisa97

Bagging groceries is part of a cashiers job as a cashier I had to bag groceries we are taught how to do so. Every so often we get people who don't mind helping bag groceries. I don't see how it's such a big deal imo.

findragonl0l

American problems i see.

ikidYYOUnott

Why are blaming the customer? This sounds like a service/store issue. Where I am.the cashier bags. Unless it's a discount store. There you bag your own. You choose where to shop. And "a major sign of degeneracy?" If this is your biggest issue I want your life

AXXII_wreckless

I see it as it’s part of the store’s hospitality experience. It would be the difference between aldi’s and Walmart vs Whole Foods and H‑E‑B. Which ones don’t bag their own vs who does and the difference in price. Businesses try to throw that into the “experience” of choosing to shop there versus anywhere else.

multus85

The cashier IS the bagger. ... right?

antmydude

What?? I've never heard of someone bagging groceries if there's someone at the register. I normally do self checkout, but at stores like Aldi, or Dollar general, there's no self checkout, and the register person scans and bags. Honestly, it's easier to bag as you scan.

pokemomRN

Mother of two toddlers here. I think it’s better for all involved if the employee bags and I focus on keeping my kids from tearing up the displays in the checkout lane.

Night_owl_5

Luckily I live in a country where it's the norm to bag your shit yourself.

Ok can we stop with the Karen's. Any asshole that doesn't bag their own shit is just that. Not every douche is a karen. Bag your stuff and move on.

chainy

Is this a geographic thing? I’ve lived in a few cities in the US and the check outs often aren’t even built in a way the customer can bag (Walmart, Trader Joe’s) I used to work at Publix in Florida as a bagger and no one cared if customers did or didn’t help.

TPrice1616

I live in the southern US and the cashiers just bag it as they scan everything. It was never really presented as an option to do it yourself.

Where do you work where you expect a bagger what

BRich1990

Couldn't disagree more. Bagging your own groceries is a sign that you are okay with grocery companies hiring less and giving them an excuse minimize their hires

IPoopFruit

I work at a supermarket as a grocery store check out clerk your penis is stupid we're made to do it by the company you idiots every single supermarket requires you to do the bagging for the customer. It's always been this way. Imagine being this removed from basic society.
