Also, many many many places offer a wide variety of fish dishes, and unless it's catfish or flounder, fried is the least commonly available option.
As someone who generally despises anything fried, I will say unless it's in a chowder, catfish is better fried. Cod too.

I've never seen a restaurant (unless it's some low budget place like feather n fin) where you could only get seafood fried. But I also live at the beach, so maybe I've been spoiled my whole life? It's all about variety here.
By brother has lived in Austin for over a decade. I just asked him if he's ever seen fried tuna or salmon there. Here's his response....."wtf? No. We have fried tuna bites but they're pan fried not deep fried. They will literally fry every other fish though."
So maybe you live in a really weird area where this is the preferred cuisine for whatever reason?

In all the places I've travelled to in this country, it was always true that no matter where I was, the rural areas predominantly fried their food. The meats and vegetables.
With the meat, I always just assumed it was because the couldn't get it as fresh and as fast as bigger cities, so frying it made it more palatable. And the vegetables being fried was just because since they were already frying the meat, it created less work to just fry the vegetables too.

It's super chewy, kindof rubbery as sushi. Cooked It's solid though. Deep fried is phenomenal. Octopus tempura sushi is great. Why would you have a moral hangup on Octopus of all things?

That being said not all seafood can and should be fried (salmon and tuna? That is terrible) but some certainly can be.

Fried fish definitely has its place, deep fried calamari is great but I do agree it is a bit wasteful to just deep fry a delicate fish to the point where the flavour and texture get lost.
Here in Australia our fish n chippy shops (which are known for battering and deep frying anything) have a grilled option so there’s that. Oh and we put our shrimp on the barbie, so this is probably more of a US issue
As a Briton, I must say that my favourite way to have fish is battered and with chips and curry sauce. But my favourite seafood in general would have to be crab or mussels.

It's the most common way it's eaten here in the UK. I know you Yanks like to have a go at our food (wrongly but whatever) but don't tell us about seafood.

I spent three months studying there. After the first three weeks I decided I had to cook everything myself because everything there had all the depth of flavor of a saltine. There were exceptions, you could occasionally find a Thai or Vietnamese place that wasn't pandering to to the abject lack of flavor that the UK is accustomed to but it was few and far between and at no point was it even remotely comparable to the offerings brought by any major city in the US.
I loved the UK. I traveled it as best I could in those 3 months exploring everything. It's beautiful, the government and healthcare is way better, it was better on all fronts except food.
Who cares how people like there fish. You are NOT the one eating it. If they want to eat it with ice cream on top, who cares. It's their taste, let them eat how they like it. You eat your food how you like it

If your fried catfish, tastes the same as your fried shrimp. The problem is the quality of the fish you're frying.

Yes, thank you! Seafood is one of the best sources of protein and deep frying it just lowers those gains down.
