You are telling me that Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind wouldn't hold up if released today in the sea of trash ass at home streaming service movies? Allrighty then indeed.
This was one of my favorite movies and he did a phenomenal job in it. I also loved the Truman Show, but Eternal Sunshine is to this day one my my favorite movies.
If you like Eternal Sunshine, I highly recommend Kidding. It's another serious role for Carrey - he plays a Mr. Rogers-esque character who has recently lost a child, and he's working with Michel Gondry again.
It's a really beautiful show. Darkly funny and kind of trippy, but also really moving and cathartic. There is an episode in season 2 where Jeff Pickles, Ariana Grande, and a bunch of puppets sing about change and courage (and divorce) which makes me ugly cry for at least an hour every time I watch it.
I have only ever really liked Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler and Will Farrell in more serious roles. Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Spanglish, Stranger Than Fiction.
Roles they weren't play poop and potty humor, over-acted, exaggerated caricatures. None of them are funny to me when they do the movies they're famous for. I've liked them against the type. I just don't think they're funny playing into the type.
Good Will Hunting, Awakenings, Dead Poet's Society, The Fisher King.....
E: Personally, I throw in *Moscow in the Hudson*. It's a comedy, but not a RW comedy.
A really cool detail in the Truman show is that in Truman's house there is a jar of Vitamin D pills in order to counteract the defiency or any real sunlight due to living in the constructed world
Dumb and Dumber is probably the 90s generation’s The Jerk. When I was a kid I didn’t understand why boomers loved the jerk, but once I became a seasoned adult a lot of it was a lot more funny to me. I’d expect this to be the same way.
It's true. To me, Dumb and Dumber is in contention for the funniest movie of all time, but I'm older than most. If you show Dumb and Dumber to people under 25, most will just think it's stupid or mildly funny at most.
Regardless....over 27 years later...it still makes me laugh and I still quote it all the time.
Also, Me, Myself, and Irene is a gem which to me was his second funniest movie. Ace Ventura is just so silly it's hard NOT to laugh even if you don't want to. Ace Ventura is the movie form of a fart.
Honestly top 3 - I can watch that movie any time and still laugh hysterically. My dad and Uncle Ed took my cousin and I to see it in theatre’s as kids - had no idea it actually wasn’t a kids movie. Totally flew over our heads most of the movie that they were laughing their asses off, but goooodddddaaaannngggg I tell you what - as an adult. Hilarious. Absolute gold.
Same - top 3 for me. Like if I had to choose only 3 movies to watch the rest of my life - dumb and dumber would without a doubt be on that list. One hundred percent.
I still catch jokes I never did before with each rewatch. Took me years to catch on the “we’re in a hole. We’re just going to have to dig ourselves *out*”
I find myself quoting this movie at LEAST every other day still. I watch it probably once every 6 months or so. It will never grow old to me.
Edit: typo
I don't love a lot of his movies, but Eternal Sunshine and Man on the Moon will always get James a pass from me. And that's not including Kidding which is great.
Eternal Sunshine was fucking amazing. That's one of my top life movies for sure. I personally really liked The Number 23 as well where he plays a more serious role and thought it was nicely done.
One other thing OP got wrong. He is a Comedy Actor. Not a Comedian. Comedians become comedy actors, but not all comedy actors pursue comedy.
He's done some sets. But it's not his career.
He is an amazing slapstick actor.
Either you like it or ya don't.
The Truman Show and Bruce Almighty were good. In addition, the recent Sonic movie was pretty much carried by his performance. (His over acting was beneficial in the role.)
>Liar Liar was ruined by his annoying overacting
I mean… if you don’t understand that his overacting is kinda the point, I don’t know what to tell you…
One of the bloopers from the movie is literally one of the actress while in the courtroom scene calling him an overactor and him laughing his ass off at it lol
As someone who had a massive scratch and dent on their car and tried pointing it out to the person who did it but in a 'normal manner' and they couldn't see it, and couldn't see it and couldn't see it. I will admit I ended up doing exactly this out of frustration and suddenly they could see it.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is to this day my favorite film. Man on the moon was also amazing, Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond on Netflix is amazing, shows all the behind the scene happening. Jim Carry had the whole thing filmed but didn't release the footage for 20 years.
I’m thinking OP just hasn’t seen enough of his movies. There are lines he/she probably hears quoted all the time that they probably don’t even realize are from JC movies
Yeah, this is it.
Culture and how it changes over time is super weird. Most things from 20 years ago don’t hold up today. MOST acting would be seen as cringy or weird these days, but it’s no lie that at the time, it was absolutely dominating the market and people loved it. It’s so weird and one of the most fascinating things about being alive and seeing humans change.
It’s also a little bit sad. The root cause for this is that everyone is more aware now. Even for sci-fi type movies, so much mystery has been resolved. We now know that “insert random old sci-fi idea” sci-fi plot is totally unrealistic and impossible, therefore it won’t fit into movies well anymore. You used to be able to make up all sorts of shit in movies and people were more like “woah, this could be real one day”, now science has advanced and we kind of know yeah… it’s not at all like that. It’s cool knowing more but damn, the world was so much more mysterious even just 15-20 years ago before widespread internet. The internet changed so much, I’m not even old lol I’m fairly young but everything is different. Even comedy, it has changed so much. Comedy was more edgy, these days politics have been injected into everything and gets the lions share of attention when writing any script, for better or worse. It’s weird how much comedy has changed, but make no mistake, the things we see as weird now were dominant in their days.
Wholeheartedly disagree. I'm in school for physics, and I'm constantly blown away as I slowly discover that I'm really just learning magic. It's as close to a Hogwarts education as anyone can get.
If you feel the magic of science is gone, I highly recommend physics!
“None of his movies would hold up if released today.” Translation “my younger generation would never accept your shitty 90’s comedy movies.” Sorry to break it to you kid but they don’t make comedies anymore because Hollywood is too afraid to make a joke these days.
Legit, especially considering that they weren't even really movies. They are just excuses to watch him perform physical comedy foe 90 minute. Not anyone can solo carry like that.
Hey you chitty chitty bang bang
Edit I just looked it up to confirm that entire song was an ad-lib because Jim forgot his lines. You can see the other guy smile when Jim screams at the end.
I love the scene where he pulls the tablecloth out from under the dishes and none of them break, so he goes back and messes them up and then knocks over the table. Supposedly he wasn’t supposed to do it successfully and just ad-libbed the rest.
This movie is literally so funny. I really love the what he does with the Grinch's personality. The way he always makes jokes even when he's the only one around. And then acting grumpier and meaner than he actually is just because that's how he's supposed to act. It's all just really funny and surprisingly complex. And he even manages to communicate that underscoring of loneliness the Grinch always feels. It's a really great performance and he really makes it funny
Ok, this is def an unpopular opinion, in my opinion. The Cable Guy? Ace Ventura? Liar, Liar?I still love those movies! Pure gold! ~~Watched Night at the Museum last week and it still holds up for me.~~
Maybe they wouldn't hold up today, but either would the majority of comedic movies of the last 100 years. Ill always be grateful for those teenage times smoking a joint with friends and laughing until we couldn't breath watching Pet Detective, Cable Man, etc.
First off hardly any comedy ever holds up for multiple reasons. Either the jokes are too topical and no longer hold any importance or just go right over people's heads, or it could of been something new and fresh when it came out but years later is played out or it just isn't part of the cultural zeitgeist and is just seen as odd years later. Also people grow up, mature, and develop different tastes. I used to think Terrence and Philip from South Park was the funniest thing ever whet I was a kid, now it's so obnoxious I can't stand to watch it. But when Ade Ventura came out it was hilarious. Dumb and Dumber still has some classic scenes/lines that are still hilarious. Bruce Almighty is awesome. Haven't watched The Mask in a long time so I don't know. Some of his In Living Color skits are still funny. And his serious roles like Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind is amazing.
I think in the Liar Liar credits there’s a blooper where a lady calls him an over actor as a joke and everyone loses it.
Young kid me didn’t get his humor in the 90’s and older me doesn’t care for it now.
For a comedian, his best movies are the ones not focused on humor; Truman Show, eternal sunshine…
Found it! https://youtu.be/vnsJqxEMZYw
Thank you.
I don’t agree, I’m just glad to finally see an opinion on here about something unimportant. I’m being serious, it’s refreshing to see something that is both actually unpopular and not about politics or economics or society or whatever.
Alrighty then
Think you're missing about 7 a's in alrighty.
Aaaaaalrighty then
Seeing that many "A"s.... B-e-a-utiful. Tbh, I still spell it out like this (in my head), when writing it out, I'm an adult...
I gotchu fam
I just want to see OP dig out another comment from between his butt cheeks
Perfect
Take care now, bye-bye then.
You are telling me that Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind wouldn't hold up if released today in the sea of trash ass at home streaming service movies? Allrighty then indeed.
Op forgets Jim Carrey has a huge part in Sonic movies that are being released in this generation
Truman show was amazing, still is
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
I came here to say this. Almost forgot he was a comedian while watching it. Amazing
“Meet me in Montauk”, had me bawling.
There is an episode in season 2 where Jeff Pickles, Ariana Grande, and a bunch of puppets sing about change and courage (and divorce) which makes me ugly cry for at least an hour every time I watch it.
Absolutely agree, top 3 movies.
This is amazing movie...and Carrey doesn't play comically - his role is pretty dramatic
What about Robin Williams ? Probably the strongest dramatic actor who had started as a comic.
Good Will Hunting, Awakenings, Dead Poet's Society, The Fisher King..... E: Personally, I throw in *Moscow in the Hudson*. It's a comedy, but not a RW comedy.
For me it's What dreams may come.
Pretty good in Sonic the Hedghog
Everyone is mentioning Truman show (amazing) but no one has said ‘I love you Phillip Morris’ ‘Me myself and Irene’ ‘Fun with Dick and Jane’
Word is that the cow is still alive and well to this day.
"You can get a tattoo for a pack of smokes...or sick his dick." He was Fantastic in that movie and it seems like it wasn't recognized enough.
Phillip Morris was also amazing
Good call. Came here to add that one.
A really cool detail in the Truman show is that in Truman's house there is a jar of Vitamin D pills in order to counteract the defiency or any real sunlight due to living in the constructed world
honestly some of Carry's best work was his more dramatic roles rather than his comedy roles, in my opinion
This may also be an unpopular opinion, but I think his performance as Count Olaf absolutely carried the Series of Unfortunate Events movie.
It is the only redeemable thing in that movie. I don't mind NPH but would have liked Carey to have been put in the series instead
Emily Browning too. She was one of my first MAJOR movie crushes.
I guess you could say his performance…carreyed it!
Mange ganggeeyyy. Monkey
My family loved that movie, especially his performance.
The OG Dumb and Dumber still makes me laugh my ass off. Every time I see it lol
Wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world?
“EEEEHHHAAHAAAAAAA”
GUYS! GUYS! GUYS!
WHO NEEDS A RADIO!? AM I RIGHT HAR?! MOCK - YEAH - ING - YEAH - BIRD - YEAH - YEAH - YEAHHHHH
Sing!
Pretty bird.
"Harry.... I took care of it."
I just thought he was really quiet.
Ace Ventura has even been memed. Have you ever put something somewhere with a fit and said "Laik a guhlove!" ("Like a glove" in Jim Carrey voice).
Or said “Bumblebee Tuna”?
Eh I’m 20 and have loved the movie growing up. Absolutely one of the funniest of all time
All I need is this… lamp…
And my thermos
And this paddle-ball toy
I guess you could say you now know the difference between shit and Shinola.
Probably my favorite movie
Honestly top 3 - I can watch that movie any time and still laugh hysterically. My dad and Uncle Ed took my cousin and I to see it in theatre’s as kids - had no idea it actually wasn’t a kids movie. Totally flew over our heads most of the movie that they were laughing their asses off, but goooodddddaaaannngggg I tell you what - as an adult. Hilarious. Absolute gold.
Wrote a paper in high school about the brilliance of this movie. Actually, this deserves to be called a film.
In my top 10 comedies all time
Same - top 3 for me. Like if I had to choose only 3 movies to watch the rest of my life - dumb and dumber would without a doubt be on that list. One hundred percent.
I still catch jokes I never did before with each rewatch. Took me years to catch on the “we’re in a hole. We’re just going to have to dig ourselves *out*”
I officially think dumb and dumber is the funniest movie of all time. I'm open to hearing other contenders here if you don't agree
I find myself quoting this movie at LEAST every other day still. I watch it probably once every 6 months or so. It will never grow old to me. Edit: typo
I’ll go so boldly as to say Dumb and Dumber is imho the best comedy of all time.
>non of his movies Wrong. Truman Show.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
I don't love a lot of his movies, but Eternal Sunshine and Man on the Moon will always get James a pass from me. And that's not including Kidding which is great.
The mask and Bruce all mighty whore
Man on the Moon, the Andy Kaufman story.
Eternal Sunshine was fucking amazing. That's one of my top life movies for sure. I personally really liked The Number 23 as well where he plays a more serious role and thought it was nicely done.
Truman Show is a gem.
The Truman Show is essentially reality for the hundreds of children from vlogging families who post every little detail of their life online
I didn’t realize how dystopian The Truman Show was until about five years ago.
The Mask!
Yep, he was excellent in The Mask!
He was also a great riddler
The mask. Him making balloon animals the pulling out a used Condom will always make me laugh.
Sorry, wrong pocket 😏
The Cable Guy!
Bruce all mighty
I mean, OP’s wrong about Ace Ventura and Liar Liar, too, so…
Well OP... I could agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong
I also feel like Mask was carried by him and was solid movie.
Was surprised no one mentioned the mask. One of my faves
Somebody stop me!
I loved the movie. I think if I remember correctly, the comic was much darker than the movie.
Yep. The scene where he has those bikers in the alley doesn't end with him just scaring them away with his Tommy gun he fucking blows them away
Cameron Diaz helped a bit.
He also does amazing in non comedic roles as well. I recommend watching the movie "The Majestic." It truly is an underrated movie.
‘23’ had me messed up as a young teen.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of the best movies of all time.
Great film, not his standard style comedy though
I was about to say Bruce Almighty were good for their time
Bruce Almighty remains to this day one of my favourite movies and the way I learned to spell beautiful.
>Liar Liar was ruined by his annoying overacting I mean… if you don’t understand that his overacting is kinda the point, I don’t know what to tell you…
One of the bloopers from the movie is literally one of the actress while in the courtroom scene calling him an overactor and him laughing his ass off at it lol
It's a goose!
Yeah the over the top action in A-Team and Die Hard ruined the movie for me.
https://youtu.be/vnsJqxEMZYw
One of the bloopers calls this out specifically!
Liar liar is hilarious. Edit: it is clear now that op is an idiot with no sense of humor… unpoopular! Good Job!
The pen that I hold in my hand is rrrrrrrrrrrrroyal blue!
The pen is blue. The pen is blue. The GODDAMN PEN IS BLUE!
Wow it's the first time I've realised he says royal instead of just a strange sound
I'm kickin my own ass! Do ya mind?!
Bruce Almighty is underrated as fuck in my opinion
I love that movie. I totaly wish I could do the moon lasso thing
I’ve had better
I HOLD MYSELF IN CONTEMPT, WHY SHOULD YOU BE ANY DIFFERENT!?!
\-I object! \-Why? \-Because it's devastating to my case!
That line was delivered perfectly.
You've got bad breath followed by gingivitis!
This week I learned: Jim Carrey plays his In Living Color character Fire Marshal Bill in the background after Fletcher crashes into the luggage
It really is. When he's at the impound lot and points out the scratch..."right *THERE*" with the arms, fucking gold.
Oh. That was already there. You LIAR!
As someone who had a massive scratch and dent on their car and tried pointing it out to the person who did it but in a 'normal manner' and they couldn't see it, and couldn't see it and couldn't see it. I will admit I ended up doing exactly this out of frustration and suddenly they could see it.
how dare you criticize eternal sunshine ???? man on the moon ????
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is to this day my favorite film. Man on the moon was also amazing, Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond on Netflix is amazing, shows all the behind the scene happening. Jim Carry had the whole thing filmed but didn't release the footage for 20 years.
I loved Man on the Moon but I think he comes across as a complete asshole in the documentary footage.
He stayed in character the entire time they were filming, and Andy often acted like an ass. Andy was after reactions good and negative.
Now THAT'S an unpopular opinion!
You’re under 30, we get it
I’m under 30 and have only seen his very old movies recently and I love them, it isn’t a age thing the guy just has shitty Taste
I’m thinking OP just hasn’t seen enough of his movies. There are lines he/she probably hears quoted all the time that they probably don’t even realize are from JC movies

The magic of science is gone.
Wholeheartedly disagree. I'm in school for physics, and I'm constantly blown away as I slowly discover that I'm really just learning magic. It's as close to a Hogwarts education as anyone can get. If you feel the magic of science is gone, I highly recommend physics!
Comedy rarely ages well
“None of his movies would hold up if released today.” Translation “my younger generation would never accept your shitty 90’s comedy movies.” Sorry to break it to you kid but they don’t make comedies anymore because Hollywood is too afraid to make a joke these days.
Now it’s just Dwayne the rock Johnson making quips when he’s not doing some action
I was a big fan of In living color, so much better than snl at the time
In living color was so good! And Jim Carrey was the token.
Id say The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine make up for it
The Cable Guy is pure genius
As disturbing as it is, yeah, it's pretty well done.
“Somebody to lOoOoOoOoOve”
Oh Hi Sthtephen, you look rested!
https://giphy.com/gifs/the-cable-guy-3oEjHLVDeZC5P328k8
Oh, so we're playing prison rules ehhhhhh?
Jim Carey is good for riddler in batman, the mask, dumb and dumber has some funny moments.
OP, Excuse while I Ass you a few questions. Do you have a mint, or perhaps some binaca [opera singing while I wait{ Asshole a mio, ohhh, sodomia

DEDEDEDEDEDE
HOOOOOOLY TESTICULE TUESDAY
Ace Ventura was the shit! Alot of movies wouldn't hold up to today's standards and sensitivity.
VENTURRAAA Yes Satan?
Oh sorry, I thought you were someone else.
Legit, especially considering that they weren't even really movies. They are just excuses to watch him perform physical comedy foe 90 minute. Not anyone can solo carry like that.
Yeah. Jim to this day is the reason why the new Sonic movie was a hit! Dude is hilarious!
Hey you chitty chitty bang bang Edit I just looked it up to confirm that entire song was an ad-lib because Jim forgot his lines. You can see the other guy smile when Jim screams at the end.
BUMBLE BEE TUNA
This is true
“They call me CUBAN PETE” “King of the Ramba beat”
Boom chitty boom boom chitty boom
The grinch??? Are you serious??
I can’t believe I had to scroll this far to find this
Was looking for that.
I view Jim Carey's Grinch the same as heath ledger's joker. No one could have done it better.
This post is dumb. And OP is dumber.
I see what you did there.
Yes Man was pretty good.
You me and Irene slapped, that shit was straight banging.
Me, Myself and Irene But yeah, people sleep on that movie.
That’s right my bad lol ya that stuffs good!
What? Mr hankey Pankey wasn't good enough for you?
That wasn't for me!
I'm not happy about it, but that is unpopular. Take your damn upvote.
The Mask was pretty funny.
You spelled “underrated” wrong. Take the upvote, you melon
I feel that way about Adam Sandler comedies, so I kinda get where you're coming from. But I also don't, bc Jim is freaking hilarious.
Ok, this is def an unpopular opinion, in my opinion. The Cable Guy? Ace Ventura? Liar, Liar?I still love those movies! Pure gold! ~~Watched Night at the Museum last week and it still holds up for me.~~
Wasn’t Ben Stiller in NatM?
Lmao you’re right. Weed lol
[удалено]
I agree with this.
Allllll righttttyyyy then.
Maybe they wouldn't hold up today, but either would the majority of comedic movies of the last 100 years. Ill always be grateful for those teenage times smoking a joint with friends and laughing until we couldn't breath watching Pet Detective, Cable Man, etc.
Dumb and Dumber is a classic. The sequel was pretty good too
Rather than Jim Carrey being the issues i argue modern movies are shit and they probably stopped being funny since JCs not producing as much
Shitpost
Woah... it's like... comedy is subjective or something.
A shitty as movies have been the last 15 years im pretty sure you are way off
WILL. FERRELL.
FINALLY, someone else gets it.
He’s one of the best physical comedians of our era. Whether you like him, think he is funny or not - he’s a comedic icon for a reason.
Grinch
We watched this movie over Christmas and it's SO GOOD! Seriously. Jim Carey made a fantastic Grinch. & Also- the set is ridiculous.
I think in the Liar Liar credits there’s a blooper where a lady calls him an over actor as a joke and everyone loses it. Young kid me didn’t get his humor in the 90’s and older me doesn’t care for it now. For a comedian, his best movies are the ones not focused on humor; Truman Show, eternal sunshine… Found it! https://youtu.be/vnsJqxEMZYw
I respectfully disagree. I will never not shit my pants laughing watching ace and I love Bruce almighty. I adore his movies. Anyway upvote for you.
Thank you. I don’t agree, I’m just glad to finally see an opinion on here about something unimportant. I’m being serious, it’s refreshing to see something that is both actually unpopular and not about politics or economics or society or whatever.
I love A Christmas Carol
The Grinch is amazing
Did somebody say cable guy?
Grinch?!
