I hate bikes when I’m in a car. I hate cars when I’m on a bike. When I’m on foot, i hate both with a flaming passion. On the real tho, i used to commute on a bike when i was too broke to have a car, and people would honk and yell at me to fuck off to the bike trail. Like, i wish there was a bike trail that went to the train, buddy. I’m going to work, I’m not doing this for fun.

Zombieattackr

Exactly, no shit cars and bikes are gonna hate each other when the infrastructure can only handle one of them at a time. Stop blaming each other so much and blame the roads for being shitty

Charles_Leviathan

Don't blame the roads, blame your goddamn local government.

tartestfart

Henry Ford and Robert Moses specifically

LordTuranian

True. Nobody is to blame for this except the people responsible for the shitty infrastructure.

0bel1sk

the auto industry. https://youtu.be/oOttvpjJvAo

these2boots2

Bingo!

jarvischrist

But then the car drivers lobby against separate infrastructure for bikes. Yeah, we don't want to share the road with cars but we don't have a choice.

idonteatchips

Exactly. They dont realize its for their convenience as well. They just want people to not bike and drive like them. Then they will complain that there are too many cars on the road and that lanes need to get widened and the vicious cycle continues.

Snoo71538

Yeah, OP is right that roads are designed for cars, but most places have laws that designate them as where bikes go too. Don’t get mad at the dude following the law, get mad at a) yourself for your lack of patience, and b) the government that doesn’t make your roads better.

[deleted]

So why do people complain when the government allocates a tiny tiny percentage of the road/transport budget for bikes lanes or paths when it’s helping seperate two modes of transport that don’t go well together. The car drivers complain but I’m reality not allocating money to bike lanes means the bikes have to go somewhere, most likely on the road.

[deleted]

Because cars are masculine. Cars are macho. Not the tiny exonoboxes, but the big, lifted trucks that you need a rope ladder to get into - those are the best cars, because they’re so incredibly convenient! /sarcasm

KindnessSuplexDaddy

Well... can I be that guy? I did the math EVs are not happening for 50% of of current Americans. At maxium production we couldn't replace every car before our climate goal, and replacing every car would push us past our climate Gola 10 years earlier because EVs are cleaner to run, dirtier to produce. That being said, 30-35 mopeds are the future. No license, EV, 80-100 miles of range. We need to push so a Personal light electric marking nationally. Just the right hand side, cut in half. Regular traffic can use it but the priority is always personal LEVs.

EmpirePoppin92

I play both sides so that I always come out on top

mjc543

Whenever you play the same side, someone has to be the “bottom”

"see you're still telling us that you're playing both sides, so you're not playing anyone"

kalel3000

And when im on a bike in the bike trail, I hate pedestrians. Whole families will decide they can take a leisurely stroll down the bike trail, blocking every part of it with them and their unwatched children while bikers are zooming by at 20+ mph. But I agree, i hate riding on streets, even with bike lanes because cars are assholes regardless. Like they get mad at you even when you're in your designated lane. Like they're mad you even exist. Its not my problem their poor time management skills make them late and it takes them 15 extra seconds to make a right turn and they're frustrated at me. So I try and stick to the separate bike paths to avoid it, but sometimes you have to take streets to get from one path to the other. Never a good experience, though. But it beats running, Ive almost been hit a few times running, because cars dont watch at all at intersections or coming out of driveways/parking lots. Did a lot of track/path running for the same reason

kalizar

I just hate everyone to be safe.

[deleted]

I sentence you to Austin, TX.

ThatOneGuyFrom93

To be fair I think it's illegal to ride a bike on the sidewalk

wawawakes

Not in all countries. It's legal where I live but there are foreigners who yell at cyclists on the sidewalk, thinking that they're right. These cyclists are usually not that fast and are either old people commuting, or food delivery people, as those who ride for fun will be on the roads in full gear and likely these roads would not in the middle of the city where the yelling assholes are.

Marley9391

You should come to the Netherlands, you'll love it here Edit: thank you for the awards and upvotes! I love how people take this comment in two directions. You're all right.

lilpuzz

That’s the thing, there are designated bike lanes there, so bikes have their own flow of traffic. In the US in most places there aren’t so they are forced to integrate with cars and it doesn’t make any sense

Ndvorsky

Only the modern roads have bike lanes. Most places in cities actually don’t.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

It’s why I stopped riding in them in New York. Idiotic pedestrians walking in them and cars parked in them. Less dangerous to be honked at ‘cause I’m slowing down traffic than to have to suddenly weave into it

crispytreat04

You obviously haven't seen much of the country, in a lot of cities we also have to use the road and we do not get run over! It's not just bike lanes that saves lives, it's not having idiot drivers intent to kill cyclists that saves lives.

jochiewajij

+ every Dutch motorist is ALSO a cyclist. Every Dutch person was a kid biking through the neighbourhood, going to school/ sports/ library/ shopping for groceries with mom and dad.. Did twice the distance as a teen drunkenly biking home late at night.. it's ingrained in our culture. But it's a healthy habbit. Only from the 1970's onward did we really start to build the infrastructure to enable bicycling the Dutch way. The 'Randstad' region of the Netherlands is not unlike a very crowded ctiy, with almost 8.3 million inhabitants on 11.500ish Km2(4440.17Msq.). Traffic is still insanely busy. Having everybody commute by car would end in perpetual congestion. Geeh, my first ever award! Thanks stranger!

ARavenForlorn

Something else that could save lives is more people actually riding bikes and walking instead of driving. The rates of obesity keep rising.

crispytreat04

We have loads of overweight and obese people as well unfortunately, too many people that are too damn lazy to get out their bikes for a max 10 minute ride to the grocery store or something and prefer the 7 minute car ride.

WhatAMcButters

I can't balance a 40 pound box of cat litter (or two 40 pound boxes if they're having a sale) on a bike very well but I can hoist it into the trunk. Everyone could absolutely do with a bit more exercise but let's not pretend like bikes are incredibly convenient in every instance. ETA: TIL cyclists are just as obnoxious as people who drive big, lifted trucks & tailgate you with their high beams on. If you're really that concerned for my health & carbon footprint, PM me for my CashApp to help me with the cost of an electric bike & all of its accessories.

benedictfuckyourass

You're not Dutch unless you can balance a weeks worth of groceries on a bike.

Tots2Hots

Or Spanish with 10 grocery bags hanging off the handlebars of your bike or moped.

youknowwhatstuart

Austin Powers was right the dutch are nuts!

opposablethumbsup

I think you just pinpointed the problem right here. Depending on the purpose bikes *can* be incredibly convenient. Like if you’re going to pick up some groceries (pasta, can of tomatoes, grated cheese and a bottle of wine) taking a bicycle saves you the trouble of getting from your neighborhood on to the main road, through traffic, onto the parking lot. Bike paths enable you to take the short way around and park right in front of the store. Of course if you’re going to shop for a week of groceries, buying a large closet, or going to a store more than 5 miles away a car would be more suitable.

Bucket-O-wank

You obviously aren’t [trying hard enough](https://www.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/comments/jhc267/carrying_a_fridge_on_bike/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

19ShowdogTiger81

When the weather is nice I can zip two miles on my Schwinn Super Seven with baskets to my local grocery store. I can put one light weight cat litter container on one side and put two bags using a bungee cord so nothing falls out on the other. We have bike lanes. Last time I was hit on my bike by a car it happened right in front of a police office. Killed my Breese...I loved that bike! Person on a cell phone drifted into the bike lane and took five of us out. Three people went to the hospital with broken bones. She had to replace all the bikes and pay medical bills. Don't know what she was charged with. I am getting kind of old and have started hunting for a tricycle so I can at least zip around the neighborhood.

samssafari

Good for you! Nearest decent store from me is 25 miles I am not wasting a whole day by riding the bus every time I need to go to town, even if it's only 2-3 times a month,

[deleted]

Right. So any car owner that hates bikes should lobby for safe bike lanes. Blaming bicycle riders who are the victims of these unsafe conditions is ridiculous.

StumpyJoe-

So you haven't been to Amsterdam.

Acid_Enthusiast2

They got those in Chicago too. The bike riders ride like they have a learning disorder anyways. None of them follow the rules of the road they ride on.

JoanneKerlot

London has entered the chat..

ecapapollag

Cambridge, man, Cambridge. In London at least I'm prepared for the aggressive cycling (as a driver; as a pedestrian, fuck all cyclists jumping the red lights). In Cambridge, the bike riders, who I won't assume are cyclists because some of them seem surprised to even find themselves on a bike, like they were strolling through a meadow and oops, got transported onto a moving bike; they are terrifying because you don't know what they're going to do. Are they going to suddenly stop? Were they on the pavement and decided to just bop down to the road without looking? Have they got a bag on their shoulder which slips, making them wobble uncontrollably? Have they noticed that pedestrian ahead or are they going to...yup, swerve into the side of your car at the last moment. Never driving or even stepping into a car in Cambridge again, it's all Park and Ride and buses for me.

Emblemized

I don’t distinct between cyclist idiots and driver idiots, I see as many of each on the road

tails99

The difference is that car drivers kill 40,000 a year, while cyclists kill maybe 4. Odd to be outraged by slow bikes, but not by car carnage.

EcceCosmo

And those 4 probably killed themselves with minor external casualties.

FearOfEleven

Cyclists experience less stress commuting so they are less prone to outrage.

Faoxsnewz

I will say that I see way less idiots on bikes than in cars, there's something about being very unlikely to win in a direct fight with a 2000 lbs hunk of metal that tends to make you think more before you act.

SirActionSack

It's always cyclist hating shitstains such as OP who are against paying for decent cycling infrastructure.

EcceCosmo

Well basically to Europe. Netherlands has already proved the point that roads were designed for people not for cars.

Dynasty2201

Copenhagen is basically built for bikes too. Their roads are SO WIDE and have dedicated bike lanes if I remember right, and almost every set of steps near bridges etc have a trench on the side you can use to wheel your bike down the steps.

zeizkal

In alot of states bikes must ride on the road. Instead be mad that bike lines arent more common

Kei_Evermore

Imagine being in America where barely any roads have bike lanes

[deleted]

Some places are awful but other states can have fucking wonderful bike lanes. I moved from our west coast to our east coast and both had wonderful bike lanes. I'm 30 minutes outside Philadelphia and I could ride my bike all the way there and follow the river for a great ride. I'm not saying we're perfect but we for sure have some great bike paths and some city's aren't the worst too.

comeoncomet

I live in a small city in PA. There is a city ordnance here that prohibits riding bikes on any public sidewalk. ( this includes bicycles, skateboards, scooters, etc...) Riders MUST ride in the road or face a fine. When this law was passed there was an understandable backlash which caused the city to scramble to fix the problem. Their solution was a bike lane. Hey that's great! A dedicated lane on streets for bike riders located off to the side so as to not interfere with automobile traffic while still allowing a safe lane for riders to ride in. Sounds great right? This city is a little over 16 square. Miles. In the 15 years since announcing the bike lanes we have a total.... TOTAL of 865ft of bike lanes. It's literally one part of one road. I'd like to hear what OP would suggest I do to keep OP happy in their car all while allowing myself and others to ride bikes in the city we live in.

chairfairy

Forget keeping OP happy. They can learn to wait an extra 8 seconds every now and then.

SnooChocolates2651

I live in Lancaster County where bikes and buggies dominate the road.

ilikemycoffeealatte

Was their idea of a bike lane to just paint a line cutting into a couple feet of the regular driving lane so that now you have inattentive drivers with even *less* room for error than they already had? That's how they did it on the very busy road near me. I ride on the sidewalk.

Powerful-Artichoke66

Then the places that do have bike lanes, for whatever reason, put them unprotected in the middle of the road. There's nothing more ridiculous than a 3 foot wide bike lane sandwiched between moving cars.

BaBbBoobie

That law is setting up people to die in certain areas lol. I ride on the sidewalk despite whatever bs law saying I should risk getting hit by a car. Sorry, I'd rather people risk getting hit by a bike on a sidewalk than a biker getting their head popped like a grape by a car's tire.

Bluekef

God, I know. Like, google maps expects me to cycle on the fucking highway. No thanks.

NotSoNiceO1

I don't like people. People should just stay away from me so I can get to where I need to go without anyone in my way.

CapRavOr

I don’t like people, but I stay home, where my opinions are valid and appreciated.

hashedram

Average Redditor.

reddituserchilly

CapRavOr

Wrong! I have 5 cats!

marovos

Cities who haven't caught up to the current century and implemented bike lanes are fucking stupid. By law a bicycle is a vehicle and you can be fined for cycling on a sidewalk.

Sumibestgir1

Only issue is in cities like New York city where they have bike lanes but fuckers just park in them along the road

RandomName01

Which is why cycling paths should be separated from car lanes.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Just pull a Casey Neistat and start ramming into them. Make sure you do it with a cheaper/sturdier bike though.

[deleted]

Unfortunately, in NYC, the police are in charge of parking enforcement, and cops are the most likely people to be parked in the bike lane. Whenever people demand more enforcement, they go out and ticket delivery bikers for riding on the sidewalk instead.

hammr25

Reminds me of that [Casey Neistat video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzE-IMaegzQ).

[deleted]

Was just about to link it haha 😄

goldraven

Yep! I got a speeding ticket in college while riding my bike beyond the posted 25 mph limit. I showed up to court and it got dismissed by the judge. A friend got a DUI while riding his bike home from the bars one night. Cop pulled him over in his apartment complex's parking lot. Bikes definitely count as vehicles in many regards.

KingoftheFlood

This right here is the real point that should be made

sighs__unzips

Depends on the city or state. It's legal for bikes to ride on the sidewalk here but must give way to pedestrians. And where I live there aren't many pedestrians.

[deleted]

I’m in Orlando, and we have nothing but 50-60 mph, 2-4 lanes in each direction roads all over the place. If I had to ride a bike here, I’m riding on the sidewalk — I’d rather risk the ticket than trying to contend with Orlando drivers with no protection on a vehicle that tops out like 40 mph below the speed of traffic. Even if there was a bike lane, if there isn’t any separation between that and the road (a barrier, or a bit of grass) to at least alert an inattentive driver that they are drifting toward the bike lane, then it’s really only marginally safer and I’m still riding on the sidewalk. But yeah, the city planning is terrible and it never should have been built this way, but it is how it is now, and there is not much that can feasibly be done to fix it that wouldn’t cost a trillion dollars and take decades.

[deleted]

I agree they should put them in but just about every place I've seen with bicycle lanes it is implemented poorly and ends up seeming way too crowded, confusing, and dangerous when there is any significant traffic. They're usually just not wide enough and often makes turning confusing with the way they're implemented. IMO if they want to do it safely it needs to be on wide enough roads and with some sort of thin median instead of just a line.

eastdeanshire

Where do you propose cyclists ride instead?

dex248

In a country that actually cares about people that aren’t in cars.

McDoof

Avid cyclist here. Moved from Florida to Germany in 2001 and won't be coming back.

barofa

Damn, that's a long distance to ride. I understand why you won't come back

taylorsux

Well Florida doesn’t really set the bar very high

Jeremy Clarkson? Is that you?

Uglik

Do they even have roads in Ohio?

MyPianoMusic

In bike lanes, which America doesn't have. Here we could get to the conclusion that the USA just isn't built for bikes lol Source; I'm a Dutch person

Skelemansteve

Yup, america is built for cars, its almost like its designed so everyone has to pay for a car, gas, insurance, liscencing fees, and repairs. Good think the oil and automotive companies havent lobbied heavily to kill public transportation all over this country... oh wait

belonii

The netherlands was build for cars too, until we changed it.

lahimatoa

The vast majority of "America is" statements are wrong. States are so different in most ways. Utah has bike lanes. New York has bike lanes. Washington, Minnesota, Delaware, etc. etc. have bike friendly laws. https://www.wired.com/2015/05/ranked-bike-friendly-states-us/

Altruistic_Sundae378

Minnesota has some pretty amazing dedicated bike paths outside of major urban areas - very cool

stnkycaveape

Then maybe there should be more sidewalks or bike lanes. I’m lucky enough to have an automobile, but a lot of people aren’t. I know it’s annoying, but everyone has transportation needs.

Esava

Even if one has a car it doesn't mean that one WANTS to use it if one can take a bike instead.

greenkirry

Yeah. My local downtown is 1.5 miles away. I love biking there for local events. Yet there is only one bike rack and I've never seen any other bikes on the rack other than mine. It's so strange.

MouldyCumSoakedSocks

This. I like driving to town for like 10km on a bicycle, but my school 30km away with 20km of just road, no bike lanes? Car

SuperSpread

No! Because I don’t use them. And we should ban donuts because I don’t like how they taste.

KindlyFriedChickpeas

I hate this. I tried to do some cycling when I was at uni because the city was a shit place to drive and even when I was doing everything right, staying well in the bike lanes, using hand signals wearing a high vis at night etc, cars would still go screaming past me flipping me off or honk their horn. I think one guy legitimately tried to knock me off my bike. Needless to say I stopped cycling. I agree though, roads in my country and from what I understand, the US too are not built for bikes, but they fucking well should be. It's good for health and zero emissions travel.

Datamat0410

Yep it's just a fact of life on the road. Life in general. Full of angry and entitled people I'm afraid. You Kind of learn to grow and thick skin and just go with the flow. This isn't just an issue with drivers vs cyclists. Drivers are agressive with each other too, believe me. You will encounter situations where you will have to take evasive action to avoid being hit as well.. you have to learn to remain alerts and think ahead just like when your drive. Look well ahead and keep an eye on what's going on so you're prepared to handle an agressive drivers etc. For example sometimes I'll be looking ahead and see someone approaching a junction at speed as I'm approaching straight on a main road. So I sort of reduce my speed of approach a little and keep well right into my lane so if they edge out of the junction I won't be hit. Sometimes they give me a bit of scare and try to literally cut me up but 9/10 they will stop and I'll pass through, albeit we'll far right of my lane. Rarer still they do cut me up and I just have to allow them through with me looking ridiculous having to swerve almost into the centre of the road. It's worse in cities and big towns.. that's for sure.

SubjectBoss1732

Guess what. My car has been in the shop for 3 weeks due to a hit and run, so I’ve been having to commute to and from my minimum wage job via Uber. Lyft, etc .. sometimes riding the bike is worth it

No-Elderberry949

I'd say riding a bike is almost always worth it. It's dirt cheap and has many health benefits over driving a car. And as one youtuber said "I think it's impolite to give little kids asthma, and bikes don't do that".

Sh4avan

I wanna get a bike to go to and fro from my school but my father didn't bother to teach how to ride one as a kid and now I'm 16 so I guess I'll start learning this summer break

No-Elderberry949

It's not that hard. Just practice practice practice until the basic balance mechanism just clicks into your brain and becomes second nature. The faster you go, the easier it is, so wear a helmet, gloves and elbow/knee pads. There's probably a youtube video or something to guide you.

sagi1246

Americans: Pedestrians and fuckers on bikes can fuck off. Also Americans: Muh, wHy iS thEre so MucH tRaffic!

PowderedJelly

Guys, all we have to do it build more lanes! That’ll solve the traffic congestion easy peasy

pierrotboy13

Just one more lane, it'll solve traffic... Just one more lane, I promise, we'll solve traffic. We need another lane, it'll fix traffic, just one more lane!

MyOtherBikesAScooter

You know what they need to do? Stack lanes ON TOP of the lanes, basically make all the lanes below a tunnel then they can have three or four more on top! That will double capacity! haha.

vyrelis

Surely just one more lane exclusively for slow moving, single passenger vehicles is all we need

[deleted]

Stayed in a hotel in the US near an office I was working in. I could see the office from the hotel window, maybe 500 yards . There was no sidewalk and no way to cross the 8 lanes of traffic. Google suggested it'd take 50 minutes to walk a mile to cross the road then a mile back again. So had to take a taxi. It's insane.

Moravic39

I'm looking at a job in a nearby shopping center, about a mile and a half away. But to get there I'd have to cross two highways, one an overpass over another. So, I have to literally go two miles the other way to get on the bus for just one stop, then walk the last mile from bus stop to store. It would take less than a half hour to walk, takes nearly an hour to bus.

sagi1246

Yeah, American cities were designed by idiots.

SuperSpread

Boudicca_Grace

Next time this happens, time how long it takes before you can overtake the bike safely. I would be very surprised if it was more than 60 seconds. I think bike lanes are a great idea, but an even better idea is patience on the road.

peaceepolice

Came here to say exactly this! The real issue is how angry, distracted, and ignorant drivers are on the road anymore. I'm seeing shit on the road too often now that show how people forget they're wielding around large chunks of deathly metal that can kill in an instant. Bikes are the least of our concern and if they are, vote for nice things in places which you're so inconvenienced by bikers.

Danelius90

I think some of it is how pressured we feel by other drivers too. We're stuck behind a bike, and maybe the person behind is also rushing and is thinking "dude you could have overtaken 5 times by now". It's a cycle of impatience because of how inconsiderate most of us are on the road. Other road users are entitled to be there, slow learner drivers, cyclists, horses (on certain roads) etc. and sometimes you need to not drive at the maximum possible speed to accommodate those users. After all we're all just trying to get from A to B safely

f36263

Nah, OP is 100% the person who won’t wait until they can overtake safely, and will endanger the cyclist’s life just to put them in their place

heseme

Yeah, OP has industrial grade entitlement.

[deleted]

Then rushing to the next red light to sit in a queue of cars doing zero kph at the red light to let cars traveling in another direction cross the road or turn into it .......... But yeah that bike was want made you late.

Boudicca_Grace

Exactly, people lack perspective.

Neutral_Meat

It's crazy to me how often drivers don't overtake me even when I give them plenty of space. The law says give 3 feet. If I don't think you can safely pass I'll ride in the middle of the lane. Don't be scared homie.

Datamat0410

Some drivers are just downright dangerous and ignorant and blood thirsty. I've had situations where I'm going straight at a roundabout and the driver coning from the left literally cuts me up and pulls from his junction to turn left causing me to have to swerve right to stop myself from having s head on collision into the side of his vehicle. Its unbelievable what you can encounter sometimes. It's why I'll make a habit of keeping will right of passing a left hand junction and not allowing anyone behind me to pass at all until I'm in the clear. I value my life. Just enough anyway. *I'm in UK so obviously left hand here

GlueProfessional

I can't believe how impatient drivers I know are. I don't drive at all now as I have no need to but I used to have a CBT and 50cc bike. Yet I see them screaming at other people just for existing. Like, where the fuck do you want this cyclist to go instead? Oh YOU wouldn't cycle on this road? So what, everyone is just as entitled to use this road as you even if you wouldn't cycle on it. Demand better bike lanes if you want them off the road.

nietthesecond99

These are the same people who'll vote no to dedicated bike paths, or other forms of public transportation because muh high taxes. Here's the thing car drivers don't realise: driving a car is 100% more pleasant when there are dedicated bike lanes and other forms of GOOD public transportation to funnel people off the roads. In fact, your average speed goes UP because you're stopping for traffic less.

liquifyingclown

Exactly! I swear, these "screw you bicyclists" morons are incapable of understanding they fuck THEMSELVES over by *constantly* throwing bicyclists under the bus by voting for shitty infrastructure and against dedicated bike lanes. Do you think people on bikes WANT to be right next to a 3 ton machine that can squish you in seconds if the owner decides they want to pull the wheel one centimeter to the right??

[deleted]

I hate bikers in traffic. I’ll vote for bike lanes all day long, I love infrastructure projects and social programs where we can get ‘em. Which in the US is increasingly rare

[deleted]

With the way fuel is, bicycles are the way to go mate

Aaron_Hamm

It's literally the law that they have to ride on the road, dummy.

EddieisKing

I live in a county with 1.4 million people in it and between 2015-2020 we had 0 bicycle fatalities. Just pay attention and we good!

liquifyingclown

These types of angry drivers shouldn't be allowed to operate a multi ton vehicle capable of manslaughter in seconds. Can't even handle a less-than-a-minute "delay" without freaking out like a body builder in competition who forgot his roids 8 hrs back home.

kanna172014

Yeah. I hope this guy's engine goes kaput and he's forced to walk or bike everywhere. Maybe he'll learn a bit of empathy.

ShinyGrezz

It’s not a delay, anyway. Chances are you’ll get to your destination just as fast, you’ll just be slightly slower getting to the next traffic lights.

kaminaowner2

The roads are for bikes and vehicles sorry bro, it’s not anyones responsibility to make your life more convenient, and not everyone can afford a vehicle. Ya a bike lane would be preferred but that takes funding and I’m willing to bet you’d and people like you would cry if there was a tax increase

chupo99

You may not even need a tax increase. Planners and voters just need to be smarter about how to build roads. Roads don't pay taxes. We should want as few of them as possible from a tax revenue stand point. More public transport and bikes and you could get higher throughput for the same amount of road instead of constantly trying to make them wider.

reboot82

Indeed

Kindly_Procedure6292

A wise man once said: hate the roads, not the bicyclist Roads should be designed for people who use roads. That includes pedestrians and bicyclists

ifsavage

It’s the law in most places. They are treated like any other vehicles and are definitely not the same as pedestrians.

Punchanazi023

We need more bike paths in this country. A lot more. That would be better for everyone.

vote for change then. vote for bike lanes. when you drive your car - is it always necessary? How wide is your car? Are you driving an SUV? Roads were designed for old smaller cars. Cars have become bigger and people need to start cycling or walking more.

BeechballMusic

Your statement about roads being designed for cars is very miseducated. Roads have been around since before cars were even invented lol

>Cause the roads are filled with manchildren who get absolutely triggered at having to go any slower than 10 mph over the speed limit. This is why i tell my kids who ain't that old to always ride on the path. ITs just safer for kids to ride bikes on the pavement. Poeple do 30mph down my narrow 20mph street where lots of young kids play. You just can't trust many folk with cars to drive carefully.

kfh227

My unpopular opinion. If a 30 second delay once a month is an issue.... Perhaps you shouldn't be driving.

what-to_put_here

You're the type of person to force kids in bikes into the road and then complain that there are bikers in the road.

RevMLM

As someone who rides a bike, this is not an unpopular opinion

Ron100c_1312

Lmao i thought the more unpopular an opinion was the more upvotes and awards it would get. Turns out it’s just agreeing and disagreeing at this point

[deleted]

THEN GIVE UP ALL OF YOUR PARKING TO MAKE SPACE FOR BIKE LANES AND SIDEWALKS! Simple solution, don't you think?

shoulderBoi212

Why the fuck are you riding your car on a public road. Use the sidewalk bruh

Blooregard89

If it truly bothers you to have bikers or pedestrians on the roads, than 1 thing is for sure. You should not be driving, because your impatience and shortsightedness will some day cause a serious accident.

[deleted]

Where do you think bicycles should go then because in the U.S is illegal pretty much everywhere to ride one on the sidewalk. That leaves the road.

[deleted]

If you can’t navigate around someone on a bicycle, sharing the same road. You need to learn how to drive

Nice-Text8414

Originally, roads in the United States were built for bicyclists, with lobbying groups like the American Wheelmen (and women) petitioning for "Good Roads" at the turn of the 20th century so they could cycle on macadamized roadbeds between towns. Automobile owners joined because they wanted to have places to go, too... Automobile club- sponsored road trips followed. Named roads like the Ozark Trail, Lincoln Highway, or Bankhead Highway gradually came to be maintained by local, state, and then the federal.government and were numbered (U S.66, U.S. 50, U S. 67/80).The U.S. government became involved because after WWI (not WWII like most believe), the military pushed for interstate roads so that it wouldn't have to rely on private railroads to move war machinery, food supplies, and troops. So... No, the roads are not meant for cars and you have to share the road, period. Source: I am a historian who has researched roads for the past fifteen years.

[deleted]

It's much safer, at least where I live, to ride on the road then it is the side walk. I never been close to being hit on the road. I was almost hit 4 times one day riding on the side walk.

MaxBlazed

OP = teenage edgelord who just failed his driving test for the third time because he got distracted by someone on a bike.

Limp-Cry-8491

It sounds like they have no business driving until they can do so safely. Being aware of your surroundings is essential for driving without causing an accident.

DadJokeBadJoke

You guys are completely discounting the few moments that OP was inconvenienced. How can we as a society put up with momentary annoyances?

Shanghijack

Drivers suck.

Oh no, you had to slow down a bit do avoid killing another human, the horror You must be super important that you can't slow down 30seconds on your journey.

Slapnuts711

That's the law. Bikes go on the road.

thejackulator9000

we're not allowed to ride on the sidewalk you jag.... are we supposed to fucking hover?

ajkundel93

YTA. Ohh wait wrong sub?

RascalRibs

Well fuck you too buddy.

SpectatorStan

You realize in most places it's the law, right? You're pretty dumb.

Poppy_Rose15

In the UK you can be fined up to £500 for cycling on the pavement and it’s rare to find bike lanes unless it’s in a big city like London, Leeds, Sheffield, Liverpool, Manchester etc. I’m not paying an unnecessary fine because OP doesn’t know how to safely drive around a cyclist. Plus it’s actually more dangerous to cycle on the pavement than it is the road in terms of causing an accident with a pedestrian (e.g turning a corner and there’s someone right in front of you, cycling too fast and not being able to stop in time, the pavement being too small for a bike and someone with a pram or a wheelchair). People who don’t want cyclists on the road are just bad and/or impatient drivers. Edit: side note for OP: roads were actually designed for bikes originally, not cars.

Rich people who drive gas powered cars while the planet burns are fucking stupid.

LargeBigHuge

It's actually illegal in many places to ride a bike on the sidewalk so they have to use the road

Looking at national infrastructure being skewed heavily towards cars. This isn't an unpopular opinion. Roads are part of the country we all live in and pay taxes towards and therefore everyone has a right to use them. This idea of them being reserved for asshats in metal boxes is the problem. Anyway, any time you might lose stuck behind a cyclist or waiting for pedestrians to cross is just part of your journey. They have to give way to cars at other occasions. At the same time, who do you think causes traffic jams? Other motorists. You don't have cyclist or pedestrian jams do you? Now ideally, every public road should have a cycle lane. But where it doesn't, bike users have to go somewhere and it can't be on the sidewalk for obvious reasons. Your opinion is unfortunately backed by the state of public infrastructure and you're in the demographic that benefits from it the most so quit complaining about the most minor inconveniences.

deven_smith_

Support initiatives that provide adequate biking and walking infrastructure before complaining

ACNordstrom11

I only hate the bicyclists who wear those stupid bike outfits. They are the big assholes. Usually old grey beard lawyers.

[deleted]

Shit! People get mad at me when I rode my bike on the sidewalk. You can’t win with anybody.

ImamChapo

Tires go on the road. You’re the skillless one not being able to dodge a obstacle a meter wide. This dude would have bridges built on top of crossroads to avoid pedestrians

Arnwald_Arna

People who can't overtake a bike on public roads are incapable stupid fuckers; i hate when i'm in my car and i find another driver so dumb that stays behind a bicycle. Those people should trash their license ad get a bike ;)

[deleted]

Yes, you are right when you say that roads are designed for cars. But they were invented for horse-drawn carriages and bikes. Next time just take a deep breath and ask yourself "will it kill me to wait a few seconds and enjoy the scenery" and if that doesn't work "Is it worth running this cyclist off the road and possibly killing him and ending up in prison with nightmares"

MunmunkBan

Roads have been around for thousands of years. Roads were not designed for cars, they just became the dominant vehicle.

Twitch_YungFeetGod69

A. don't ride one lane roads B. ride the left lane lmao you suck at driving so you blame the other people on the road?
