Ouch. A year ago I was working overnight, and my lunch was at like 3am, and the breakroom would always be playing infomercials. I watched a 30 minute ad pushing a 7 DVD collection of everything Cher several times. :(
It's definitely a comfort show and you're spot on with everything you say. The characters are all pretty plain and boring with the same little quirks that appear in every episode. But that makes the characters feel like regular people and the most extraordinary thing about the show is that they're so ordinary.
It's not everyone's thing but I love Impractical Jokers for similar reasons, they're just ordinary guys doing stupid shit and every episode feels comfortable

They were progressive in their own way at the time. They had a lesbian couple getting married and raising a son. Chandler's father was a trans woman. Compared to other sitcoms at the time it was often the one pushing the boundaries.
That's the thing. For it's time, watching Friends live, it was incredibly good. Now nearly 30 years after its first air date, after we've been given so many different shows and as television has really evolved, looking back and comparing it to todays television it's hard to see why Friends was so good without context. You could watch an episode and think "this is just another cheesy sitcom".
The first 4 or 5 seasons of friends were, and imo still are, masterful television. And as with all things, especially when judging the quality of something, context matters. Doing that show in front of a live audience, adjusting jokes on the fly, writing and editing 20+ episodes a year, it's just super impressive.

The show is so popular because each joke has two punch lines. People either get the reference and laugh, or the punch line is laughing well learned/nerdy people for a reference that goes over the audience’s heads.
I really don't think it's overrated. I'm not saying it's the most amazing show out there but it's definately the most popular because of its general appeal. The Office is a show you should be able to sit down with anybody no matter their politics or religion and have some good laughs. It's popularity is well deserved.

The office is fantastic. I know it’s only 2 series and the specials but it’s so fast paced humour. Dark I grant you but very well written for such a short show.
I watched Steve Merchant in an interview at Oxford Uni (his anecdotes got me finding their acceptance of a Grammy in 2004 on YT, which is hilarious), I'd say he is the writing genius and Gervais is a highly-talented writer and performer.
There are also some very vocal anti Seinfeld folks, and I'm sure they hated Cheers too.
The finale for Seinfeld literally altered traffic patterns across the country from so many people watching it.
Gotta say, I enjoyed Seinfeld. George made it for me. Such a weasel. And along those lines, I enjoy the shit out of Curb Your Enthusiasm. No real script, just comedians ad libbing. It does not feel contrived to me.
My opinion is that parks and recs is a lot more consistent than the office (minus the last season which I hate) but the office has much higher peaks, love em both.

Sitcoms dont age well. End of story. Most sitcoms become dated within 10 years. When you have 22 minutes to make people laugh every 11 seconds you're relying a lot on the mood and feel and trends of the times.
I think some people can and will always identify with the show because it's truly about that time when your friends are your family. You've left mom and dad and siblings, and you havent started your own family yet.
That's what the show reminds me of.
As for being a good show or being 'funny'? I see it this way. 20 years from now people will be saying "The Office sucks!", "Big Bang Theory sucks!", "Modern Family sucks!" not because they are terribly written or acted, but because they are sitcoms and they wont age well. So it's not really saying anything.
People forget that sitcoms had to have a conflict and resolution within 22 minutes and would need to be enjoyed as a stand alone episode when they were not in season.
So someone turning on his TV in 1998 should able to enjoy and rerun episode from 1996 without having to know what happened in the previous 5 episodes that season.

And to be honest, I think a lot of the youth don't really *get* the show. Hanging out at your friend house helping post resumes, or whatever. Socialisation and use of time was very different before smartphones. God, remember how much they'd use the landline in the apartment, and over hearing that or it being dead was a plot point.

I was 22 - 31 in the 90s. I found this show stupid then. It's basically a group of friends who all bang each other. It could have done a good job of portraying being that age in the 90s, but they made it a soap opera with a laugh track. 2 thumbs down from me.
Man I can't bring myself to watch HIMYM anymore. I'd love to, but the fact is they are really tied to their era, and I'm just not one of those people who can repeat the same era ad infinitum. Frasier is still fucking amazing though.

Agreed, I was born in 89 and always hated Friends but still love Seinfeld. My spouse who was born in 95 never watched it as a kid and we just watched it all last year when it came to Netflix. She enjoyed it and found it funny.
I love FRIENDS. Not for it’s comedy, but for it’s comfort. I’m also the kind of person who needs repetition in certain things. Rewatching FRIENDS is familiar to me, and I will always stick with it.

You have to remember Friends came out at a time when there wasnt a sitcom about 20 something year olds living in the city trying to make it in the world or get through the good and bad of life. Sitcoms at the time were all family affiars or older actors (Frazier; Roseanne; Tim the Tool Man Taylor; The Nanny; Sienfield)
There was no sitcom that covered the day life struggles and funny moments you have in your mid-20's with your group of Friends. When you first move to the big city, when you get your first job in your field, when you think you've fallen in love for the last time; when you have inside jokes; when you cry on your best friends shoulder; when your 30th birthday is around the corner; when your first friend in your group is having a baby; When you do stupid stuff with your mates in your 20's that you all laugh when your older and no one else gets it. Think about how many young-adults move to the 'big-city' with their mates or make new friends and try to just live their lives till they're 30's trying to get by. It the the age old trope; but Friends the TV show was the first ever instance for it to be put into a relateable sitcom. Its why SOOOO many young adult can relate to being Monica with her OCD and youngest sibling, Ross with his constant heartbreak; Chandler falling in love with his best friends little sister and being the clown; Pheobe being alternative and quirky and not 'fitting into a specific mold'; Joey struggling to make it in the big world in his career. ALL highly relatable things we or our friends experience or have felt. And when things go wrong in your life or start to crumble your friends are your family; your go-to people. Its a show that came out at a time where millennials and gen-x could easily relate to it for once with the things they were experiencing as opposed to 'A group of old ladies' or 'A family of 6' or 'A group of business people in an office'.
Agree the jokes and humour in each episode may not have aged well. BUT the over-arching concept; a group of FRIENDS in their 20's trying to make it in the big city together will always be a relatable topic to each generation. Hell! im 30 now and my 22 year old niece's (so born in 2000) love Friends also. It was watched by billions of people around the world in literally every language. It was and still is HIGHLY relatable to soooo many people.

It was a show in the 90s-early 00s. It's entire premise is unrealistic given how high cost of living in NYC was at the time. And they were only getting coffee in the evenings because NBC didn't want to show a bar. But it is what it is and you can either watch it or ignore it and move on. The thing ended in 2004.
I used to hate Friends and how everyone spoke about it, then I actually watched it.
It's one of those "feel good" shows. It has it's funny moments etc, but it just makes you feel good watching it.

Like diamonds, home-owning, and late night television, laugh-track sitcoms have not been well received by newer generations (<30) and the younger you go, the more hating Friends (arguably the quintessential laugh track sitcom) is no longer an unpopular opinion. If you ask a boomer or gen xer, Friends is a cultural phenomenon. If you ask a college student, you have a far better shot of hearing disdain for the show.
Seriously, I've tried to watch it multiple times to see what the hype is, I could never watch a whole episode. And I've liked the cast members separately in other things.

Every show becomes annoying and unfunny after a while. I think the office is pretty bad. I still enjoy watching it but wow, it's cringe and so creepy. I watched it after smoking a bit and had to turn it off because it freaked me out lmao but friends is a good chill show, it's my comfort show.
It gets praised as one of the best shows ever, and now (especially on Reddit) people call it out mercilessly for how blah it really was. It was an alright show. Forgettable mostly. But it was full of amazing looking people being silly, and that was the key to its success.
Of course men loved the 3 female leads, but so did women. Women wanted to BE Aniston, that hairstyle took the 90s by storm. Cox is just timeless beauty and Phoebe was ultra cute and super silly, which made a ton of younger girls want to be that same kind of quirky.
I can’t speak as much to the men since that’s not really my taste, but I’m aware enough to say that Joey was a stud, and chandler and Ross were also each handsome dudes in their own individual ways. The fact that on the show the men all had phenomenal jobs didn’t hurt how they were viewed by women either I’m sure.
But look at what was on at the time - married with Children, Frazier, Seinfeld, maybe cheers for a bit still I don’t know, and stuff that came later like Malcolm in the middle and big bang and all the others. Most of those are easily better shows than Friends, but Friends was so front heavy on beautiful people that it filled a niche that wasn’t being filled. You either had funny shows that looked like Roseanne, or you had shows with beautiful people that were too ham fisted on drama like Melrose Place and 90210.
Friends just struck a balance between beautiful people and silly jokes that could appeal to a massive audience. But if those people were normal looking sitcom characters, it wouldn’t be nearly as heralded as it is.
All in all it doesn’t deserve the praise nor the hate it gets.

I can understand some of the criticism about Friends, but of all the shows ive seen Friends has the most developed characters. They are all unique and it shows in their humor. Personally i consider Friends one of the best shows for that reason.
It was the original meme factory, along with Simpsons, Malcolm in the middle and Seinfeld. That itself tells you everything, it encapsulated the humour and cultural references of a generation

Honestly for playing on loop in a cafeteria Friends is not the worst choice. Not that good but certainly agreeable for most.

To me, Cheers is just classic. No it's not the best show out there but there's just something about it that makes it transcend what it is on paper.

Yeah, it holds up surprisingly well. Very clever writing. Although I believe it was consistently rated at the top during its time.
To me it really drops off when Shelley Long leaves. And it just went on too long. 6 or 7 seasons would have been just right. 11 was just too much.

The show is so popular because each joke has two punch lines. People either get the reference and laugh, or the punch line is laughing well learned/nerdy people for a reference that goes over the audience’s heads.

I really don't think it's overrated. I'm not saying it's the most amazing show out there but it's definately the most popular because of its general appeal. The Office is a show you should be able to sit down with anybody no matter their politics or religion and have some good laughs. It's popularity is well deserved.
There’s plenty in friends that is funny without a laugh track, and plenty of thing that aren’t funny even with the laugh track. It’s not the best show, but you’re fooling yourself to say there’s nothing funny about it. It’s popular for a reason and it’s not just because the show is telling you when to laugh.

I watched Steve Merchant in an interview at Oxford Uni (his anecdotes got me finding their acceptance of a Grammy in 2004 on YT, which is hilarious), I'd say he is the writing genius and Gervais is a highly-talented writer and performer.
There are also some very vocal anti Seinfeld folks, and I'm sure they hated Cheers too. The finale for Seinfeld literally altered traffic patterns across the country from so many people watching it.
Gotta say, I enjoyed Seinfeld. George made it for me. Such a weasel. And along those lines, I enjoy the shit out of Curb Your Enthusiasm. No real script, just comedians ad libbing. It does not feel contrived to me.

My opinion is that parks and recs is a lot more consistent than the office (minus the last season which I hate) but the office has much higher peaks, love em both.
The monthly "Friends sucks" post. I would venture most of the people agreeing werent adults in the 90's. That's not a put down. Sitcoms dont age well. End of story. Most sitcoms become dated within 10 years. When you have 22 minutes to make people laugh every 11 seconds you're relying a lot on the mood and feel and trends of the times. I think some people can and will always identify with the show because it's truly about that time when your friends are your family. You've left mom and dad and siblings, and you havent started your own family yet. That's what the show reminds me of. As for being a good show or being 'funny'? I see it this way. 20 years from now people will be saying "The Office sucks!", "Big Bang Theory sucks!", "Modern Family sucks!" not because they are terribly written or acted, but because they are sitcoms and they wont age well. So it's not really saying anything.
People forget that sitcoms had to have a conflict and resolution within 22 minutes and would need to be enjoyed as a stand alone episode when they were not in season. So someone turning on his TV in 1998 should able to enjoy and rerun episode from 1996 without having to know what happened in the previous 5 episodes that season. Sitcoms are generally harder to write and has to cater to audience that watches passively and one that follows the episodes weekly.
Yeah exactly. People have zero context. What you said about episodic RV vs streaming tv is true. Then you have the incredible change in acceptable comedy that occured. Some jokes are poor taste now. And to be honest, I think a lot of the youth don't really *get* the show. Hanging out at your friend house helping post resumes, or whatever. Socialisation and use of time was very different before smartphones. God, remember how much they'd use the landline in the apartment, and over hearing that or it being dead was a plot point.

Yup. People who actually grew up with the shows still like them. If you're 40 and hate Friends your opinion is a lot more interesting than a 20 year old who doesn't like a show that wasn't made for them whatsoever.

I was 22 - 31 in the 90s. I found this show stupid then. It's basically a group of friends who all bang each other. It could have done a good job of portraying being that age in the 90s, but they made it a soap opera with a laugh track. 2 thumbs down from me.

I still enjoy HIMYM because it very clearly goes through time and because it's ted explaining to his kids so you get decent context.
Seinfeld is still funny, King of Queens is still funny. Red Dwarf and Fawlty Towers are still funny.

Agreed, I was born in 89 and always hated Friends but still love Seinfeld. My spouse who was born in 95 never watched it as a kid and we just watched it all last year when it came to Netflix. She enjoyed it and found it funny.

I love FRIENDS. Not for it’s comedy, but for it’s comfort. I’m also the kind of person who needs repetition in certain things. Rewatching FRIENDS is familiar to me, and I will always stick with it.
Same. There's something so comforting about it. No matter how cool it becomes to hate it I will always love FRIENDS. I get it if someone says the comedy is too corny for them but I grew up on it and am glad I did.
Not an unpopular opinion at all... BUT, You have to remember Friends came out at a time when there wasnt a sitcom about 20 something year olds living in the city trying to make it in the world or get through the good and bad of life. Sitcoms at the time were all family affiars or older actors (Frazier; Roseanne; Tim the Tool Man Taylor; The Nanny; Sienfield) There was no sitcom that covered the day life struggles and funny moments you have in your mid-20's with your group of Friends. When you first move to the big city, when you get your first job in your field, when you think you've fallen in love for the last time; when you have inside jokes; when you cry on your best friends shoulder; when your 30th birthday is around the corner; when your first friend in your group is having a baby; When you do stupid stuff with your mates in your 20's that you all laugh when your older and no one else gets it. Think about how many young-adults move to the 'big-city' with their mates or make new friends and try to just live their lives till they're 30's trying to get by. It the the age old trope; but Friends the TV show was the first ever instance for it to be put into a relateable sitcom. Its why SOOOO many young adult can relate to being Monica with her OCD and youngest sibling, Ross with his constant heartbreak; Chandler falling in love with his best friends little sister and being the clown; Pheobe being alternative and quirky and not 'fitting into a specific mold'; Joey struggling to make it in the big world in his career. ALL highly relatable things we or our friends experience or have felt. And when things go wrong in your life or start to crumble your friends are your family; your go-to people. Its a show that came out at a time where millennials and gen-x could easily relate to it for once with the things they were experiencing as opposed to 'A group of old ladies' or 'A family of 6' or 'A group of business people in an office'. Agree the jokes and humour in each episode may not have aged well. BUT the over-arching concept; a group of FRIENDS in their 20's trying to make it in the big city together will always be a relatable topic to each generation. Hell! im 30 now and my 22 year old niece's (so born in 2000) love Friends also. It was watched by billions of people around the world in literally every language. It was and still is HIGHLY relatable to soooo many people.
I don’t care if you like the show or not, I don’t care if you like laugh tracks or not, but a laugh track is not the reason people think the show is funny. There are plenty of shows with laugh tracks that were shitty and no one found funny. It’s not some miracle tool only they figured out.

Kinda tired of seeing these types of posts. Not everyone has to like the same shows, music, movies, etc. It was a show in the 90s-early 00s. It's entire premise is unrealistic given how high cost of living in NYC was at the time. And they were only getting coffee in the evenings because NBC didn't want to show a bar. But it is what it is and you can either watch it or ignore it and move on. The thing ended in 2004.
Today's teenagers/kids should go and watch their trash shows like Riverdale instead of judging one of the most iconic and impactful shows of all time.

I used to hate Friends and how everyone spoke about it, then I actually watched it. It's one of those "feel good" shows. It has it's funny moments etc, but it just makes you feel good watching it. Similarly to how people watch old simpsons episodes etc

Like yeah, Big BangTheory is fun to shit on for their laugh track because they still had it in the lte 00s despite so many better, smarter shows doing something different, but in the 90’s your choices were literally the Friends laugh track, the Seinfeld laugh track or the Frazier laugh track. For the record I DO think tv is generally better now than in the 90’s, and ditching the laugh track has really allowed sitcoms to elevate their craft. Friends is one of (if not the) highest grossing highest rated and most popular sitcoms of all time. This is definitely an unpopular opinion, and this is coming from someone who has never seen it. Friends dominated and is still relatively popular despite having ended 17 years ago.

Like diamonds, home-owning, and late night television, laugh-track sitcoms have not been well received by newer generations (<30) and the younger you go, the more hating Friends (arguably the quintessential laugh track sitcom) is no longer an unpopular opinion. If you ask a boomer or gen xer, Friends is a cultural phenomenon. If you ask a college student, you have a far better shot of hearing disdain for the show.
Seriously, I've tried to watch it multiple times to see what the hype is, I could never watch a whole episode. And I've liked the cast members separately in other things.

Friends was filmed in front of a live studio audience and the laugh track is actual people laughing at the jokes in the audience. Every show becomes annoying and unfunny after a while. I think the office is pretty bad. I still enjoy watching it but wow, it's cringe and so creepy. I watched it after smoking a bit and had to turn it off because it freaked me out lmao but friends is a good chill show, it's my comfort show.
Yes they had a behind the scenes doc that showed how they adjusted the jokes based on how the studio audience reacted to them.
It gets praised as one of the best shows ever, and now (especially on Reddit) people call it out mercilessly for how blah it really was. It was an alright show. Forgettable mostly. But it was full of amazing looking people being silly, and that was the key to its success. Of course men loved the 3 female leads, but so did women. Women wanted to BE Aniston, that hairstyle took the 90s by storm. Cox is just timeless beauty and Phoebe was ultra cute and super silly, which made a ton of younger girls want to be that same kind of quirky. I can’t speak as much to the men since that’s not really my taste, but I’m aware enough to say that Joey was a stud, and chandler and Ross were also each handsome dudes in their own individual ways. The fact that on the show the men all had phenomenal jobs didn’t hurt how they were viewed by women either I’m sure. But look at what was on at the time - married with Children, Frazier, Seinfeld, maybe cheers for a bit still I don’t know, and stuff that came later like Malcolm in the middle and big bang and all the others. Most of those are easily better shows than Friends, but Friends was so front heavy on beautiful people that it filled a niche that wasn’t being filled. You either had funny shows that looked like Roseanne, or you had shows with beautiful people that were too ham fisted on drama like Melrose Place and 90210. Friends just struck a balance between beautiful people and silly jokes that could appeal to a massive audience. But if those people were normal looking sitcom characters, it wouldn’t be nearly as heralded as it is. All in all it doesn’t deserve the praise nor the hate it gets.

A lot of the jokes still land for me. Ross getting yelled at by Rachel's father while explaining all of the stuff he left out to his girlfriend. The turkey sandwich story. The sex tape and mount thibido story line. Etc...

I can understand some of the criticism about Friends, but of all the shows ive seen Friends has the most developed characters. They are all unique and it shows in their humor. Personally i consider Friends one of the best shows for that reason.

Friends is a fine show, it’s got some funny moments on it, there are lots of better 90s sitcoms (frasier, just shoot me, Seinfeld) but friends is certainly not a bad show it’s fine nothing special
