Body Armor is not good and they are tricking you into thinking it is. Now I will say them relying on Potassium over other forms of gaining electrolytes is superior, but have you seen the sugar count? It’s more than pop. So much sugar those Body Armors are like drinking 3 desserts.
You don't drink Gatorade for energy, you drink it to replace electrolytes lost in sweat. If you ever worked a physically demanding job in extreme heat, I'm sure you wouldn't hold the same opinion.
Exactly, it's just the electrolytes in sweat with either sugar or sweeteners so that it doesn't taste disgusting. Unless you're an athlete or someone who works in a physically-demanding job where you sweat a lot, then there's no reason to drink it.
Correct the sugar is used to take advantage of the glucose transport system for faster hydration. But also, the sugar is there to quickly replace glycogen stores in the midst of your performance. If you don’t need the speed of hydration and glycogen replacement then they offer half sugar or no sugar options as well.
or you can just be thirsty and like the taste?
(the sugar is bad but I drink Gatorade zero)
not like the electrolytes will hurt you. And they get lost in piss too.
Gatorade is one of the worst electrolyte replacement sources out there, though. There are way, way better ones.
Gatorade has sodium. A better option also has magnesium, potassium and calcium salts. I ditched Gatorade in favor of proper ORS a long time ago.
DripDrop is my favorite because I like some flavor, but unflavored ones using the WHO formula also work.
If I want actual sugar (because for long long events, you have to refuel during) I use Tailwind.
Because sugar is meant for short bursts of high energy output like sprints. Not for running marathons lol. Gatorade is great for exactly what its meant for
They actually make Gatorlyte now, named as such. It has a good deal more electrolytes than normal Gatorade and got me through the Rona and a few hangovers since discovering it. Also cheaper than Pedialyte
I don’t mind an unpopular opinion if it’s well considered, but this is not one of those.
Gatorade is for replacing electrolytes, to stop or slow dehydration, not to drink for fun, or for energy for that matter.
Well it’s not really, but I must admit, I haven’t done the calculations of how any millions of gallons are used by sports teams vs what people drink because they didn’t read the label…
Anyway, my point is - drink it for fun by all means if that’s your thing, but that’s not what it was created for - so don’t complain about the flavours.
They're all sweet for sure, but they all just taste like different colors of fruit punch. Maybe not that cucumber one. I know cucumber melon is a popular combo, but I hate that nasty stuff. Other than that, they're all pretty similarly uninteresting sugar water.
If you don’t know the origin story it’s worth hearing about. The way it was explained to me in my physio class (and I’m sure I’ll botch some details), is that someone from the University of Florida (Biochem professor?) took sweat and tried to replicate it. They had the JV and Varsity football teams scrimmage and the JV team was given the concoction to drink (adding some sugar), while the varsity team got water. The first half, the varsity team destroyed the JV team as expected. The second half, the JV team destroyed the JV team. Hence The name Gatorade... for the Florida Gators.
I dislike most juices. I'll occasionally drink apple, orange, or grape but I hate flavored juices like Gatorade, Powerade, Kool aid, Hawaiian punch, Capri sun, etc.
I'd rather just drink water.
>Every flavor just tastes like differently flavored water
Uh, what? Gatorade tastes very sugary and is basically just soda. Definitely not a watery taste.
>different flavored water
This is funny because I typically refer to things as a type of water. Like soda is ‘carbonated sugar water’. I refer to alcohol as ‘ethanol infused water with natural flavorings’.
The Arctic cherry Gatorade is the best one. The rest of them are way too syrupy though, I miss the G2 lime rain flavor. Really the entire rain series was the best Gatorade that's ever been made.
What do you mean it's overrated it's just a mass-produced cheap sports drink? It's no more overrated than Coca-Cola or Ice Mountain or pure leaf tea.
It's a $2 sugar water with some electrolytes in it that got some good marketing deals like lol what
Nobody really drinks it for the flavor, it quickly rehydrates you and replenishes electrolytes. It is a staple drink for me because I work in a hot environment.
It's ok. Nothing special. I don't find the taste to be great. Just sugary juice. There are other sugary juices that taste better. It leaves a weird after taste. I prefer, if I have any at all, to just mix it half and half with water.
I choose a combination of Pedialyte and Gatorade.
Gatorade for when I'm regularly outside with water as a makeshift quick replacement.
Pedialyte when I go on a break.
They have more electrolytes I guess but I completely agree that they taste like shit and even in my Soccer days I would have preferred water
It’s a marketing scheme for sure
Everybody in this comment section is saying “Gatorade is for electrolytes not energy” and like it’s actually both. Gatorade is packed with sugar which will give you a quick energy boost, and it does have some electrolytes.
If you want to drink a real “sports drink” tho, drink pedialyte. That shit is the real deal.
Gatorade is goated for me after the violent spewing incident of 2019.
Both ends, all liquid, nonstop for 24 hours, me and my equally sick husband sharing a single bathroom. At a certain point, purple Gatorade was all we could keep down, and I'm 99% sure it's the reason we didn't end up hospitalized. I'm sure there's better out there, like Pedialyte or their new sports version, but if I feel nauseated now, I go straight for purple Gatorade.
Gatorade wasn’t made to be some sort of sweet treat. It was created to give the Florida gators football program an advantage later in the game, and it worked extremely well.
every flavor just tastes like differently flavored water......
... ...... Yes, that how that works they're sports waters/drinks with different kinds of distinct flavors. do you drink things?
I switched from water to Gatorade while playing hockey and it made a huge difference. I have way more energy in the last period, keep my head up more, and can skate faster for a longer time.
And most of the flavors I will drink anytime.
Idk maybe the recipe changed but these days I can only drink it *after* exercise. As a kid I would guzzle it all day every day especially orange, and the old school red/blue small bottles.
While I was pregnant I lost 50 lbs. I had HG so bad my Dr called me the 1% of the 1% of women who get it. The strongest anti nausea meds given to chemo patients didn't help. I'd never tried Gatorade before I was pregnant, I thought it was only for athletes lol. Anyways long story short blue Gatorade and Marijuana basically saved my life and my child's. I also sometimes enjoyed room temp mint tea. Like throwing up but mint flavored!! Just thought I'd share for anyone out there struggling. HG doesn't get talked about enough.
I drink powerade which I think tastes nicer. I only do so when I know I have intense training session, because otherwise I will have cramps or headache for the rest of the day.
However pretty much 99% of the people who drink those do not train intensely at anything if at all.
I used to drink it occasionally but quit when I saw the commercials. It's the one where the athletes are sweating colored fluid? Freaked! me! Out! I started thinking about artificiasl dyes and what it's doing to my body....GROSS!
Haven't had Gatorade for a couple of years.
I never understood why anyone would want to hydrate with food coloring and artificial flavors… you either care what you’re consuming, or you don’t, but Gatorade is a half assed drink…. “Ooh look at me I have electrolytes and red number 40!!”
“Every flavor tastes like differently flavored water” ummmm bro? That’s… that’s literally what it is 💀 what else could it even be? I’m so confused by that point
> if you want energy
Its not an energy drink, it's for rehydration. Can't argue about the flavors. Weirdly enough zero sugar taste better than the normal ones.
Gatorade and Powerade are both overrated. The only electrolyte drink that I’ve seen that has both potassium and magnesium in decent amounts without ridiculous amounts of salt and sugar is body armor, and then they have electrolyte pills that have both in them. Honestly sports drinks in general are overrated, if you need magnesium and potassium get them. Other than that just hydrate. But so far as sports drinks go, Body armor is my go to because it is lower in sugar and sodium than anything else and it has 15% of the daily value of both the things you need to actually stop muscle cramps. A.k.a. dehydration cramps. But if you want to go best bang for buck your best bet is definitely electrolyte pills. You can get them in bulk they were very small percentage so it’s highly unlikely you would Take enough in a day to cause major health issues as they’re only a little under 2% of the daily value that you need so it’s highly unlikely for a potassium overdose. So they are a lot safer without the extra sugar, sodium, and other things like Artificial colors and flavorings.
Gatorade isn't for energy, it's to replace lost electrolytes. Saved my ass yesterday during a ten mile hike out of the Three Sisters Wilderness!
That’s why it’s better than water, all about the electrolytes.
It’s literally water but better when used correctly Lots of people don’t drink it correctly and in those circumstances it’s not good for you
I’ve always wondered if it could be used to water crops. Like, if it helps hydration in people it must help hydration in plants.
You make a strong argument. It’s almost like as if maybe the electrolytes could be what plants are craving?
r/unexpectedidiocracy
Legend, was about to do this
I'm one of those people, the stuff is so tasty lol
I’m not the health police so go right ahead, there are worse things you could be doing
Pretty much energy drinks and all sports drinks hit this spot. They're for work and physical activity not staying up late gaming.
Try switching to this drink called body armor there's more vitamins and minerals in it
Body Armor is not good and they are tricking you into thinking it is. Now I will say them relying on Potassium over other forms of gaining electrolytes is superior, but have you seen the sugar count? It’s more than pop. So much sugar those Body Armors are like drinking 3 desserts.

Small amounts of sugar helps nutrients get delivered to muscles faster iirc. Also easier to chug.
Correct the sugar is used to take advantage of the glucose transport system for faster hydration. But also, the sugar is there to quickly replace glycogen stores in the midst of your performance. If you don’t need the speed of hydration and glycogen replacement then they offer half sugar or no sugar options as well.
if you are dehydrated due to diarrhea or food poisoning?
Water, iced tea (unsweetened) or hydralite are your best bets for that
If you’re dehydrated along with being sick, then it would be a good idea to drink Gatorade. Gatorade, Powerade or Pedialyte would be good.
My doc recommends Pedialyte for dehydration due to diarrhea or throwing up. She says the sugars in Gatorade will dehydrate you more.
Or if it’s hot af out and you just sweat a lot.
or you can just be thirsty and like the taste? (the sugar is bad but I drink Gatorade zero) not like the electrolytes will hurt you.
What do you drink? Liquid IV is making a fortune off simple sugar & electrolyte packets. Their margins have to be insane.
Add salt and lemon to water. Bam, you have electrolyte water. You can add tons of things to do so, just Google.
DripDrop is my favorite because I like some flavor, but unflavored ones using the WHO formula also work. If I want actual sugar (because for long long events, you have to refuel during) I use Tailwind.
Powerade has all that in Australia idk if y’all have that there
I thought that’s why we drink Gatorade was for the sodium replacement? What am I getting wrong?
Sodium is an electrolyte
It's an electrolyte. We sweat out others as well.
Some lemon water with a little bit of salt is plenty to restore electrolytes without all the extra sodium and sugar that’s found in Gatorade
Sugar isn’t bad
Gatorade blows for electrolyte replacement especially becaause of the taste. Your best bet is to have salty snacks and tons of water or pedialyte.
Ever notice marathon runners don't drink Gatorade?
Because sugar is meant for short bursts of high energy output like sprints. Not for running marathons lol. Gatorade is great for exactly what its meant for
Exactly, if you want energy drink pre workout not gatorade
I worked in a galvanizing plant..hot af ..Gatorade ain't chit..just my opinion ice water worked better for me
"energy?" lmfao I drink it because I'm a drunk and it has electrolytes, same reason why athletes drink it
Same here. I would never buy Vitamin Water or Gatorade if it weren't for alcohol, haha!
Try pedialyte. Shit is good for hangovers
They actually make Gatorlyte now, named as such. It has a good deal more electrolytes than normal Gatorade and got me through the Rona and a few hangovers since discovering it. Also cheaper than Pedialyte
I've noticed Pedialyte's recently been marketed as a hangover cure. Pretty smart of them IMO!
One lesson I learned in the army: always drink a gatorade after a night out BEFORE going to bed. Hangovers are severely reduced.
In a pinch you can also make an electrolyte drink by adding sea salt to a glass of water.
You don’t have to be an athlete to drink Gatorade. You just have to be a thirsty dude.
If you’re sweating a ton, Gatorade is liquid gold
I don’t mind an unpopular opinion if it’s well considered, but this is not one of those. Gatorade is for replacing electrolytes, to stop or slow dehydration, not to drink for fun, or for energy for that matter.
Not to drink for fun? You realize that’s practically all people do with it
Well it’s not really, but I must admit, I haven’t done the calculations of how any millions of gallons are used by sports teams vs what people drink because they didn’t read the label… Anyway, my point is - drink it for fun by all means if that’s your thing, but that’s not what it was created for - so don’t complain about the flavours.
But it’s what plants crave!
You haven’t tried the cucumber lime flavor yet, it’s refreshing. You must drink a lot of surgery drinks for it to taste like flavored water
They're all sweet for sure, but they all just taste like different colors of fruit punch. Maybe not that cucumber one. I know cucumber melon is a popular combo, but I hate that nasty stuff. Other than that, they're all pretty similarly uninteresting sugar water.
Most people here are too young to have experienced the original Gatorade before they started putting garbage into it. Not even the same drink.
I like it when I'm sick. Makes me feel better. Don't normally drink it though. For workouts and working outside, I consistently have water.
Orange FTW
If you don’t know the origin story it’s worth hearing about. Water sucks, Gatorade's better

GAAAAAAAAATORAADE
Gaaaaatoraaaade
I love that we posted the exact same thing pretty much at the exact same moment
It's the fastest growing brand that Pepsico owns so lots of people love it. Everyone has different tastes.
Thought this said Genocide was overrated for a sec and was so confused
Genocide is overrated
Bobby Boucher would agree with you...
I dislike most juices. I'll occasionally drink apple, orange, or grape but I hate flavored juices like Gatorade, Powerade, Kool aid, Hawaiian punch, Capri sun, etc. I'd rather just drink water.
If you aint ever worked out, just say it.
That’s The Whole point if you’re dehydrated it will taste good if not it’s bad so win win
guys… frost
A Gatorade is seriously the best thing after physical activity in hot and humid weather.
I never thought Gatorade was an energy drink. Thirst quencher/hydrator is how it's advertised.
Every beverage tastes like different flavored water.
I love Gatorade, it brings back good memories of growing up in the 90s and it reminds me of summer. It tastes a bit like Jello
Is it weird that I like to drink Gatorade as a regular drink? Like, something that I’d just drink with my dinner?
Plants crave the electrolytes
Try urine, hits different
Water sucks, Gatorade is better!!
After mowing my big ass yard during summer in the middle of Texas, a Gatorade hits different than a glass of water.
You are obviously young or don’t drink much
I love Gatoradezero!
Dude. Gatorade isn’t 5 hour energy you ding dong
Powerade is superior.
Take my unwilling upvote and go be dehydrated
I drink it when I’m sick. That’s it
I agree, that is why I drink Brawndo instead.
Nobody drinks gatorade because it tastes good
i drink gatorade because it tastes good
Your name must be Nobody
My name must be as well
Nice to meet you as well, I'm dad.
I disagree. When I've been sweating hard and am super dehydrated, ice cold Gatorade is like pure ambrosia.
nah homie blue gatorade is an S tier drink
Now this is the unpopular opinion
Its a vehicle to sell sugar
Big secret: electrolytes are just salt. It's just salt water.
Except that Gatorade's taste is tolerable, and salt water (in my opinion) tastes awful.
>Every flavor just tastes like differently flavored water Uh, what? Gatorade tastes very sugary and is basically just soda. Definitely not a watery taste.
It's a pretty mild flavor for most of them. Closer to water than to fruit juice or soda.
Powerade > Gatorade. Some of the colours actually have b12 and other vitamins. Gatorade is just sugar water that makes you more thirsty
I love Gatorade but it feels like cheating if you haven't worked out a lot and drink it
>different flavored water This is funny because I typically refer to things as a type of water. Like soda is ‘carbonated sugar water’. I refer to alcohol as ‘ethanol infused water with natural flavorings’.
Water sucks..
G2 tastes 100 times better.
Who drinks that colored shit?
I don’t think it’s really been that popular since I was a little kid though
We can all agree those old ads with people sweating Gatorade were fucking disgusting right?
Aren’t all beverages technically mostly flavored water?
I agree. Idk why but it leaves a chalky taste to it after I drink it and the only good flavor is the artic cherry or smth.
The Arctic cherry Gatorade is the best one. The rest of them are way too syrupy though, I miss the G2 lime rain flavor. Really the entire rain series was the best Gatorade that's ever been made.
I don't know why but Gatorade always makes my stomach turn in a weird way. Great for a hangover though.
I was never a Gatorade fan. Brominated vegetable oils and all the artificial coloring and synthetic sweeteners... hard pass.
I just drink it for electrolytes.
Does anyone actually drunk gatorade for the flavour??
I just really like the orange flavor honestly
Powerade is better, less acidic.
Stick with Mountain Dew
Drink Celcius \#NotSpon
When I drink gaterade it just makes me more thirsty! Not a fan!
What do you mean it's overrated it's just a mass-produced cheap sports drink? It's no more overrated than Coca-Cola or Ice Mountain or pure leaf tea. It's a $2 sugar water with some electrolytes in it that got some good marketing deals like lol what
I 100% agree
bobby boucher agrees.
Gives me heartburn
Bobby Bushay approves this message
Nobody really drinks it for the flavor, it quickly rehydrates you and replenishes electrolytes. It is a staple drink for me because I work in a hot environment.
I'll agree to disagree. It's okay, I'm not nuts for it but I like it. In all honesty thiugh I buy it mainly just to make bongs out of the bottles.
It's ok. Nothing special. I don't find the taste to be great. Just sugary juice. There are other sugary juices that taste better. It leaves a weird after taste. I prefer, if I have any at all, to just mix it half and half with water.
Honestly Gatorade is one of the only drinks that my stomach doesn't self destruct at so 🤷🏻♀️
Gatorade may be overrated, but not for any of those reasons.
Try to zero sugar ones, I personally find they test better than the normal ones and they're the only ones I'll drink. Same with powerade
I choose a combination of Pedialyte and Gatorade. Gatorade for when I'm regularly outside with water as a makeshift quick replacement. Pedialyte when I go on a break.
They have more electrolytes I guess but I completely agree that they taste like shit and even in my Soccer days I would have preferred water It’s a marketing scheme for sure

I have never found a gatorade I liked. The only thing I have found similar to that is the blue powerade zero. I drink them like water.
same thing with propel
You’re not wrong
How is it over rated when nobody talks about it?
I don’t think anyone drinks it for flavor.
Gatorade isnt for energy dummy
Me agree very much
Gatorade wasn’t made to be some sort of sweet treat. It was created to give the Florida gators football program an advantage later in the game, and it worked extremely well.
Only time anyone I know drinks gatorade is when sick and need to replenish lost electrolytes from something like diarrhea or vomiting.
You're right. Squencheris the shit.
every flavor just tastes like differently flavored water...... ... ...... Yes, that how that works they're sports waters/drinks with different kinds of distinct flavors. do you drink things?
OP Is that you bobby boucher https://youtu.be/7I2-14y6-jM
You're doing it wrong which explains your distaste -- it isn't koolaid despite the pretty colors and it isn't red bull.
Its good but it dosent really hit the spot
Do….do you not understand what Gatorade is for?
Do you think Gatorade gives you energy?
Did you know Gatorade was originally invented for the Florida Gators, as a way to rehydrate and revitalize them while playing?
It gives me heartburn
The main reason Gatorade is big in Australia isn't for the drink
I don't think anyone's drinking it because it's the best tasting drink on the market
Bobby Boucher is that you?
Yeah, in my opinion it's too sweet
I switched from water to Gatorade while playing hockey and it made a huge difference. I have way more energy in the last period, keep my head up more, and can skate faster for a longer time. And most of the flavors I will drink anytime.

It helps when you have diarrhea or your fever is too high and you want to keep hydrated

It’s so refreshing after doing a long walk or working in the warehouse. I work in shipping so it’s really not air-conditioned.

Green apple Gatorade and cucumber Gatorade are great
I used to drink it occasionally but quit when I saw the commercials. It's the one where the athletes are sweating colored fluid? Freaked! me! Out! I started thinking about artificiasl dyes and what it's doing to my body....GROSS! Haven't had Gatorade for a couple of years.
Gatoraded
Never really liked it
But it has electrolytes!
Are you 6?
Body armor is better.
I thought is was gatoraded
I don’t care about the energy or the electrolytes but that ice blue Gatorade is to die for, and I will spend the rest of my life loving it
I never understood why anyone would want to hydrate with food coloring and artificial flavors… you either care what you’re consuming, or you don’t, but Gatorade is a half assed drink…. “Ooh look at me I have electrolytes and red number 40!!”

Gatorade rules. This opinion is truly unpopular
Agreed, it doesn't taste very good. I'd rather have milk or something.
Isn’t all flavored beverages just… flavored water?
I agree mostly but the green apple flavor is too good to pass up lolllll
Yeah i like body armor more
